That evening after the gala Anna hadn't managed to let herself go to sleep. She had so many thoughts in her head, so many mixed feelings. She knew very well she just had to tell everyone about the secret passage and have the soldiers arrest her. She could do that, she was supposed to do that, Elsa or Snow Queen, that masked woman with ice powers was murderer, a cold blooded killer and after what had happened with Gaston, she knew that that wasn't the first time she had killed. Elsa hadn't told her, how she had escaped her gypsy captor, but she had been very vague about it… Anna had just put two and two together, now… and something told her that Gaston may have not been the second victim. She had to tell the soldiers where her hideout was… but how could she? No matter how much she tried to relegate Elsa to the Snow Queen, she just couldn't… Elsa was her sister, her teacher… in their time spent together, Anna had only seen the best of her. She was caring, creative, sensitive, distant most of the time, but affectionate to her in her own way. She would tuck her in at night when she fell asleep in her lair or even after walking her back to her room; one time that Anna got sick she went to her room in the middle of the night to keep her cool with her powers, sometimes, when their rehearsal was over, Elsa would give Anna a box of chocolate they would usually share.
"Didn't you say I shouldn't eat chocolate during the performing season because it's bad for my vocal cords?" Anna had asked her the first time her sister had given her a box of chocolates.
"I said not to eat it before going on stage during the performing season, but once in a while it's fine" Elsa had told her with a smile "No star of the opera fell because of chocolate, take Ursula for example" she had added, and they had laughed at the joke, sharing the chocolate. Of one thing Anna was sure, Elsa might also have been the Snow Queen, but she cared about her a lot, and not just because she was her only way to have people hear her music. Elsa was her sister and she loved her, and so did Anna… she couldn't betray her sister like that and she was glad Kristoff never asked her to… at least for now.
Anna decided to interrupt her train of thoughts by going to see her parents' grave. Other two people her feelings were now very unsure of. On one side she loved them, they were her parents and they showed her nothing other than love, protection and kindness… but on the other side she felt absolute hatred for what they did to Elsa. What sort of parents who call themselves 'humans' would sell their own 8 year-old daughter to gypsies who run a freak-show circus, just because she has ice powers? Elsa didn't hit me on purpose, she was just a child! It was an accident! That side of her kept yelling in her head.
Anna put on her purple cape and got out of the room. As soon as she was out, she made sure not to wake up Kristoff who had fallen asleep on a chair out of her door. The night before, after he returned from his talk with Mrs. Pots, Kristoff had decided to guard Anna's room, in case the Snow Queen decided to pay her a visit; Anna, of course, didn't mutter a word about the secret passageway behind her mirror, just like the one in her dressing room. She would have to confront Elsa sooner or later, or both her and the Snow Queen… the latter terrifying her. Elsa had once lashed out at her when she removed her mask, who said that she wouldn't flip out again, and this time go out of control becoming the Snow Queen?
As Anna made her way out of the theater, she got herself a flower bouquet and walked to the first carriage she found, where a man with his head hidden in a black hood, to cover it from the soft winter snow, sat waiting for a client to escort.
"To the graveyard, please" Anna said sitting down, looking out of the carriage window. The charioteer looked behind him when he heard the carriage door close… the Snow Queen smirked, turned around again and headed to the cemetery. In that moment, Kristoff woke up from his slumber. He immediately jumped out of his chair as he saw that Anna's room was opened. With his sword still dangling from the side he ran to the nearest window, and saw a carriage cantering away. Kristoff immediately ran down the stairs as fast as he could, not even bothering to put on a jacket. As he got to the stables he saw their charioteer dizzily walking inside the building, massing his head.
"Where did they go?" he asked him
"Uhm… the cemetery I think" he answered. Kristoff immediately jumped on his reindeer, not caring if he had on a saddle or bridle.
"Go, Sven! Go!" he yelled and the reindeer sprinted into a full run.
Meanwhile, Anna had gotten to the graveyard, lost in thoughts. She thought of everything and nothing… her mother had promised her she would have been protected by an angel… the Angel of Music… an angel who would have protected her… and she did… but she also scared her.
As Anna kept walking she had finally reached her parent's memorial grave. They were the former rulers of Arendelle and their memorial ruled over the other tombs, containing inside not just the urns of her parents, but also of her grandparents, great-grandparents and ancestors. Anna put the flowers in front of her parents' memorial, and remained there lost in thought.
"They showed me nothing but kindness and love… why did they do that to you?" Anna asked her sister, as she heard the snow softly cracking under Elsa's light feet as she walked behind her. She knew it was her. She didn't even need to look, she was feeling in in her gut that she would have met her.
"Fear, Anna… fear" was the only thing Elsa answered. Anna turned around and got out of the tomb, followed by Elsa. The older woman looked at Anna in the eyes, but as Anna stared back at her, this time, she didn't see Elsa in her eyes, she saw nothing but herself… it felt like she was looking into icy blue mirrors as her eyes showed no emotion… and it scared her.
"That poor man…" Anna said "That Gaston… he was a boorish jerk but… didn't deserve to die… and not like that"
"Those who speak of what they know find too late that in some cases prudence silence is wise… Gaston couldn't hold his tongue. I had warned them about a catastrophe happening if they didn't follow my order and give you the leading role. You need to be in the spotlight and to do that they need to obey me…" Elsa answered emotionlessly "In my life, everything has taken away from me… but not this time, not when we're one step away from you becoming a star. Isn't that what you want too?"
"Yes, I do want it too. I want to become a great opera singer more than anything… but not like this, Elsa" Anna said "Some snow blasts and little stage incidents to scare them a bit are okay, but you killed a person and that is too much"
"Are you afraid of me?" Elsa asked numbly, burning icy holes in her eyes.
"No… I'm afraid of the Snow Queen" Anna answered boldly but cautiously "… and I am so afraid that is who you are now" she paused trying to find an emotion, something in her beloved sister's eyes "When we finally really met, I was so happy, Elsa. I was happy of having found my big sister again, to finally be able to put a face to your name, and finding out you were the one teaching me for all those years, preparing me to become who I am now it was a dream come true… but that night… when Gaston died… I couldn't help but feel that you died too that night…" Anna finally said. Elsa didn't even flinch, and if those words had hit her, she had been incredulously good at hiding it.
"You were once my one companion" Anna continued "My friend and sister… and sometimes mother too… then that night my world was shattered. I don't know who I'm talking to right now, but if it is the Snow Queen, I know that deep down, Elsa is still down there and I wish you were here again. I wish I could find hearing your voice singing to me and speaking to me, as you are now, comforting and… safe again. After all you did for me and taught me… these feelings of fear and awareness that haunt me ever since that night Gaston died, seem for you the wrong companions, they are not right for the person I know you to be" Anna paused as she felt tears softly fall down her cheeks "You were warm and gentle… before that night, I never once saw darkness in you, and I still don't see it when I'm talking to you as Elsa. I meant what I said about your powers and talent making you and your art special and that I wouldn't want you any other way… I was talking to Elsa, but who was actually listening to me? My sister or the Snow Queen?" she said, not holding back the tears. Elsa didn't mutter a word for a moment. Then her eyes showed something, pain and emptiness pouring out of it like rivers.
"I learned to be lonely, Anna" Elsa answered out of the blue "I am different … too different. Since I was 8 years old I've been on my own, I learned to find my own way in darkness on my own… I took care of myself, I tried to comfort myself… I learned to be my only companion. Music has always been my escape. Music doesn't judge, music comforts, music gave me the strength to keep going. Loneliness taught me to become the Snow Queen, because unlike you I've only known pain, suffer and cruelty, I thought I had found love too once… but it had been nothing but an illusion. You feel like you understand me, but truth is you only accept me, and yes, it's important… but you don't understand me and you never will" Elsa said tenderly, not letting one single tear slide down her eyes "The truth is that the one who is really afraid here, is me. I am afraid of you. I fear that one day, you too will only just see me as nothing, but a monster and maybe you already do"
"I-…" Anna lowered her head "I don't know…" then she felt Elsa's soft gloveless hands cup her face, raising her head to look at her. The two sisters looked at one another in the eyes again, Anna's watery ones and Elsa's strong and dry, but suffering ones. Then using her thumbs, Elsa dried the tears from Anna's eyes. If it were for her, Anna would have hugged her in that moment, but once again restrained herself, afraid that Elsa would vanish and unleash the Snow Queen within her.
"I know how you feel now, because I've been through it too" Elsa said holding softly her little sister's face in her palms "You feel, like a wandering child, waiting for someone to guide you" she continued "Have you forgotten about your Angel of Music, I'm here now, and I'm not leaving… I never did… unlike you" she said. It felt weird to Anna to hear that coming out of her mouth, especially after the heart to heart moment they just had. Anna thought it was impossible for Elsa to be suddenly shifting into that persuasive Snow Queen after that talk, she decided it was Elsa actually scolding her, and she let her to her head.
"I'm sorry…" Anna said looking down in shame as her sister took her hands away from her face "I'm sorry I denied you"
"It's okay, Anna. I don't blame you after what happened" she said. Anna looked up to her sister's masked face in hope "Come to your Angel of Music" she said offering her hand to her little sister. The redhead looked at her hand, then at the blonde in front of her. Then she slowly moved her hand towards hers and took her hand. Elsa was about to guide her back to the carriage to take her back to the Opera House, when suddenly Kristoff popped out of nowhere.
"ANNA! NO! STOP!" he yelled "Whatever she says and you may believe- this woman, this thing- is not the Elsa you once knew!" he said jumping off Sven and running to her. It wasn't what he said that made Elsa flip, it was him addressing her as a 'thing'. Elsa pulled Anna behind her and angrily faced Kristoff as he drew her sword.
"No! Kristoff! It's okay!" Anna said panicking.
"'Thing' you say?" the Snow Queen said indignantly "Well, let's see who'll be the thing once I'm done with you! You pathetic reindeer man!" and with that she blasted him with snow. Kristoff dodged it and ran to them, parrying the next few blasts.
"No! Elsa! Stop!" Anna shouted, but her sister didn't listen as rage clouded her mind, but not just rage against Kristoff calling her 'thing' and taking Anna away from her making her become a star, no, it was all the rage she had built inside of her after all those things she's been through. She could have done much worse, she could have frozen him on the spot, but she would never risk hurting Anna again.
The Snow Queen kept blasting him with ice, creating spikes coming out of the ground hoping to hit him, but even if he was bug and buff, Kristoff had learned how to sword fight and managed to dodge or block the hits, deflecting the ice with his sword. He had managed to get close enough to the blonde and tried to hit her with his sword, but the Snow Queen moved and blasted snow, creating a spike that barely hit Kristoff's arm, blood trickling down immediately. Kristoff went for her once again, but missed her, the Snow Queen did the same, but she too had no luck. Then she had her occasion, she purposely had him come closer to her, and blocked the hit with an ice shield, all she had to do was have ice spikes right under his feel and impale him. Anna realized what she was about to do
"NO! ELSA! STOP! PLEASE! PLEASE!" Anna screamed in pure fear, and it was that small distraction to have Elsa look at her with wide eyes, realizing that Anna was indeed afraid… of her. With that small distraction, Kristoff had managed to push Elsa away, returning her the favor of a light wound on her arm and making her fall to the ground, but the moment he was about to strike her, Anna jumped in between.
"NO!" she screamed blocking his hand before he could strike, placing herself between them, looking at him in the eyes "No, Kristoff! Don't hurt her, she's my sister!" Kristoff looked at Elsa one last time, then at Anna's pleading eyes. The Ice Master put his sword down and back in its sheath. Then he took Anna's hand and lead her to Sven helping her up the reindeer and then then getting on him himself. Elsa slowly got up watching her sister who had just saved both their lives get on the reindeer. The two sisters looked at each other one last time, then Kristoff had Sven gallop back to the Opera House.
Of one thing all three of them were sure… it wasn't over… not yet.
