Survival Led by God
Chapter 5: Unhappy Reunion
Philip Blake watched as the Dodge left with a trail of smoke trailing behind it. All around him was chaos, and he could do nothing about it. No! He was The Governor! He could do anything, he reassured himself, before looking at Martinez, who was making his way towards him.
"Gather everyone. We're attacking tomorrow!" Philip ordered before Martinez could do anything.
When Martinez just nodded and started shouting orders at people, The Governor of Woodbury flashed a smirk.
He had a pretty good idea where the escapees were heading to.
Rick Grimes stared at the newcomers with his eyes narrowed. Apparently, while he and the others were looking for Daryl, Glenn and Maggie, Carl had found these four survivors inside the prison; three men and one woman.
"So, you're telling me you want to join our group?" Rick stated, more than asked.
He didn't trust them, but with the growing fear of the Governor and the loss of Daryl and Oscar, they needed people. He met eyes with the biggest of them, who apparently was the leader of the four, and continued to stare for couple of minutes. The man held his gaze, before saying:
"We've been out since our last group was overrun, and we're out of supplies", he glanced at his friends, who nodded in confirmation, before looking at Rick again, "We can also help you with The Governor."
Rick blinked at that, before narrowing his eyes and looking at Carl. "You told 'em?" he asked his son demandingly, earning a hesitant nod from the boy.
"We need people, you said so yourself!" Carl defended.
Rick was about to reply, when a hand landed on his shoulder. He looked at the source, and saw Hershel looking at him with a serious face.
"They can help, Rick. They are good people."
Rick sighed, before rubbing his forehead and nodding, not wanting to deal with this.
"Fine, you can stay," he said, making the newcomers smile in relief and joy, "However, if you prove to be untrustworthy, I'll see to you being punished myself. Is that clear?" he continued, earning hesitant nods from the newcomers.
The big man then offered his hand for Rick to shake. "I'm Tyreese. These are Sasha, Allen and Ben," he said, pointing at each one of his friends, who nodded at Rick, which Rick returned.
Rick shook the man's hand and spoke lowly so only Tyreese could hear it:
"For your own good, you people better stay in line."
Daryl opened the door of the Dodge and stepped out of it. They had driven couple of miles already, without a place to go. So, they had decided to stop and make a plan.
"So, Gabriel, where' we goin'?" Daryl asked the man, who had stepped down from the trunk. He figured the man had some place in mind to go to. He didn't know why though.
Van Helsing looked thoughtful for a second, before ordering a map to be handed to him. Luckily, there was a map in the front seat of the Dodge. Andrea placed the map on the trunk and the rest of them gathered around her.
"There," Gabriel said, pointing at a seemingly random place outside a forest near the prison. Before anyone could question him, he continued: "One of my hideouts is located there. I don't know if anyone has found it yet, but it's worth a shot."
The others seemingly approved, but Merle noticed Daryl hesitating. "What's the matter, baby brother? Afraid to go so close to yer buddies in prison?" he asked, making Daryl narrow his eyes at his brother.
"No. Now that I found ya, I want to see how the others are doin'," the younger Dixon admitted, making Merle frown and Andrea look hopeful.
"Fine. Ya can check on Officer Friendly, if ya want so badly, Darylina," Merle said mockingly, seemingly disappointed in Daryl for wanting something like that. Normally, he wouldn't have agreed, but he didn't want to leave Daryl out of his sight. He knew Daryl well enough to know he'd go anyway.
Daryl ignored the nickname Merle used and sat on the driver's seat.
Then they took off towards the hideout.
When they reached the hideout, they stepped out of the car. What they saw surprised them greatly; it was an old looking church that seemed like any other church to them, but Gabriel just walked towards it like nothing was wrong. He opened the door, which made an unpleasant noise that proved it hadn't been opened in a long time. When he stepped inside, the others decided to follow.
When they stepped inside after him, they saw many bench rows and an altar. It looked like a normal church to them, not that Daryl and Merle had visited many. They saw Van Helsing at the altar, seemingly looking for something. Unknown to them, there was a small button under the altar table.
When Gabriel found the button, he pressed it, and instantly the wall behind the altar table opened, revealing a passageway that lead to somewhere. He looked back at the others, who were staring at the passageway with wide eyes.
"Are you going to stare like that all night, or are you coming?" Gabriel asked with a hint of amusement in his voice, effectively bringing them back to the earth.
At the end of the passageway was a decent sized room with many tables and, to their surprise, weapons. Gabriel walked towards a crossbow and picked it up from one of the tables. He examined it and aimed it towards one of the walls, before pressing the trigger. To everyone's, expect Gabriel's, surprise, what it shot was not an arrow, but a wooden stake.
"What did you say you did before the outbreak?" Andrea asked, getting suspicious of Gabriel. Daryl and Merle seemed to want to know that too, and now all three of them were staring at him. After all, it was not common for someone to have a hideout full of weapons in a church of all places.
Van Helsing sighed, before placing the crossbow back down on the table. He looked up at Andrea, before answering:
"Andrea. Didn't you know it's rude to ask someone something they don't like to share?"
This brought even more suspicion to him than before, but he was saved by Daryl, who stepped in front of Gabriel and turned to look at the other two.
"Don't be hard on him. It's not important what people were before the outbreak. Ya know that, right?" he reasoned, earning a raised eyebrow from Andrea and a snort from Merle.
"Look at that. Little Darylina has learned nothin'," Merle mocked, making Daryl angry and take a step towards him.
"Somethin' ya want, Merle?" Daryl asked in a threatening voice, taking another step towards Merle.
Before they could do anything though, Gabriel decided to speak once again:
"Fine, if you really want to know something of me. Let's say that I had connections. Now, if that's all, you can stock up if you want. I have business to finish."
With that, he left back to the altar, kneeled and did one thing he hadn't done in a long time.
He prayed.
The morning came.
Rick woke up early, before than any other morning, which was pretty early. He had a feeling something big would happen that day. He slowly got up from the bed he was in, and walked out of his cell. He walked to one of the windows of the prison and looked outside to the prison yard. There were a couple of walkers trying to get through the fence, but to no avail. Soon they were killed by Carol, who had been on the last watch of the night.
"Dad? Why're you up so early?" the voice of his son came from behind him.
"I could ask the same," Rick said, and turned to look at his son.
"I woke up to a feeling somethin' would happen," Carl replied.
"Me too."
The two of them continued to watch the yard in silence for a couple of minutes, before Rick walked out of the cellblock and to the yard. He walked to Carol, who was busy killing walkers through the fence.
"Mornin'," Rick said, before taking a knife from his belt, and killing one of the walkers behind the fence.
Carol turned to look at him, with a look that asked what he wanted. Rick looked back towards the prison, before looking back at Carol.
"Your shift is over. I'll be taking it for now. Go get some sleep," Rick said, making Carol raise an eyebrow.
"Sure, if the sheriff is letting me," She replied, making Rick crack a smile.
When she left, Carl made his way to his dad, who ruffled his hair, much to the annoyance of the boy. Rick laughed and gave his knife to Carl.
"Let's see how well you can handle the walkers."
Philip Blake stood in front of his people, who were talking among themselves. The Governor raised his hand to silence them and soon, everyone was looking at him.
"Citizens of Woodbury: After the tragic events of last night, I have decided to punish the terrorists who did this to our peaceful town, by going to their base of operations myself."
This caused whispering among the people of Woodbury, but they were soon silenced by The Governor's speech: "I'm not plannin' on going there alone though. I'm offering you all a change to avenge those who fell last night. Join me and my soldiers on my trip, but be warned; there's no tellin' if you'll come back alive."
People started talking among themselves again, and many people, men and women alike, stepped forward to join the trip.
Philip nodded approvingly, before stepping in a car.
They were ready to make their move.
Daryl walked out of the church, his crossbow hanging over his shoulder. He had decided to go to the prison himself. He took a deep breath and walked to the Dodge, before opening the door on the driver's side. Before he could step in though, a voice called out to him:
"Where ya goin', baby brother?" Daryl turned to look at his brother, who was leaning against the wall of the church, before walking to Daryl. Before he could answer, Merle continued, "Lemme guess. Yer goin' back to the helms of Officer Friendly."
Daryl narrowed his eyes at his brother. He couldn't let Merle ruin his change of seeing the others again. It was stupid of him to just go look for Merle like he had, but there was no helping it now. He was about to tell Merle that he'd go anyway, no matter what Merle thought, but was stopped by the older Dixon:
"I'm comin' with ya," Merle said, making his way to the other side of the car, opening the door and sitting down.
Daryl stared Merle for a minute, before stepping in the car himself.
When they left, Van Helsing watched them go. He had a feeling he wouldn't see the Dixons again anytime soon.
Rick was about to stab another walker in the head, but stopped, as he saw a white Dodge Ram making its way towards the prison. He looked at his son and nodded, earning a nod from Carl. Carl ran inside the prison as fast as he could to warn the others. Soon, the rest of the group was gathered on the prison yard.
When the car didn't stop in front of the gate, Carl opened it, to make sure it didn't break, and quickly closed it after the car went through. The car stopped in the middle of the yard and the group surrounded it quickly. They didn't know what to expect, and when the doors opened, they readied their weapons. What came out surprised them: Daryl and Merle Dixon.
Glenn had a hard time not attacking the two Dixons, but succeeded, when Maggie put a hand on his shoulder. He was furious at the two for doing what they did to him and, more importantly, to Maggie.
Rick locked eyes with Daryl. He didn't know what to expect from him, and was met with equally hard stare. They kept their eyes locked, before Rick turned to look at Merle. The last time he'd seen him was when we cuffed him on the rooftop. He hoped the man didn't hold a grudge against him.
Daryl, seeing as nobody was going to talk, decided to break the silence. "Rick, I-", he started, but was cut off by a gunshot. They all saw Axel dropping to the ground dead, and they all took cover immediately.
The Governor had arrived.
So how was it? Good? Bad? Let me know!
