A/N: Hey guys! So, it's been a looooong time since I last updated this story. I found the draft to this chapter while cleaning out my google drive, and I was hit with so much nostalgia I just had to continue it. Hope you all enjoy, I plan to start updating somewhat frequently again! As always, make sure to leave a review and let me know what you liked or didn't like so I can continue to grow and improve! "Hello? Earth to Kaoru?"
"Huh?" Kaoru's head snapped up as he noticed Tamaki waving a hand in front of his face.
"Are you alright? You've hardly listened to a word of my speech I worked so hard on!" Tamaki almost looked hurt at the thought of anybody not hanging onto every eloquent word he spoke.
"Er, right… Sorry, I've been a little distracted lately."
It was true. Ever since that night with Haruhi, he couldn't seem to get her off his mind, and with Hikaru out sick today, there was nothing to distract him from his own thoughts. He zoned out again, barely hearing when the meeting was dismissed. Not paying attention, he bumped into somebody on his way out the door.
"Sorry Kao-chan! I wasn't paying attention!" Kaoru looked down upon hearing Mitsukuni's voice.
"Oh, hey Hunny-senpai. It's alright, I wasn't paying attention either." Kaoru gave him a sort of half grin, but it was obvious he didn't really feel it in his heart. Mitsukuni gave him a curious look in return. It almost seemed as if he was studying Kaoru's face, looking deep into his soul.
"Kao-chan, is everything alright?"
"Huh? Yeah why wouldn't it be?"
Mitsukuni looked around the now empty room, then leaned in with a sly grin, as if he was about to spill the best gossip Kaoru would ever hear. Kaoru found himself reflexively leaning in as well.
"So you're not upset about the fact that you can't stop thinking about Haru-chan even though you're in love with Hika-chan then?"
Kaoru reeled back as if he'd just been hit with a brick.
"H...How did you know that!?" Kaoru exclaimed in a loud whisper. "We've never told anyone!" Not to mention, he had definitely never told a single person about, well, the recent issues with Haruhi. He still hadn't even accepted them himself. Mitsukuni sat back with a giggle, eyes bright.
"It's the way you look at them, silly. You used to look really happy anytime you looked at Hika-chan, happier than when you looked at anyone else. But lately, it seems like every time you look at Hika-chan you look sad, and when you look at Haru-chan you look…" Mitsukuni paused, searching for the right word. "...Like you're sad, ashamed, and guilty, all at the same time. I just connected the dots."
Kaoru sat in stunned silence. It didn't surprise him too much that Haruhi had figured it out, she was always perceptive. But Hunny? Well, he was definitely a lot smarter than most people gave him credit for. He let his eyes fall to a random spot on the floor, letting out a sigh.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. There must be something wrong with me."
Mitsukuni looked up at him with a solemn expression.
"No, Kao-chan. There's nothing wrong with you. Everybody gets confused sometimes, it's just a part of life. You just have to try and make sure you don't hurt anyone, 'kay? 'Cause I'm warning you, I won't forgive you if you do!" With that, Mitsukuni's eyes brightened up again and he ran off giggling. "Bye Kao-chan! I'll be cheering for you!"
Kaoru watched him leave with a sad expression. As soon as Mitsukuni was out of sight, he buried his face in his hands and gave a small pained laugh.
"Yeah. I won't forgive myself either."
