-chapter 5-
Hours passed but still found Edward Elric caught in a deep slumber on his favorite black couch in the General's office. Caught in a dream that made him extremely uncomfortable, the afternoon sunlight shone on his eyes bringing him back from his dreams. Upon first glance, after his eyes focused, Edward was a little confused. The room, or should he say office, was empty not even the General was around nor was the usual mountain of paperwork. After rubbing his eyes a few more times he sat up and stretched.
Realizing that he was indeed alone Edward let his golden locks flow gently from its hair tie. Combing through his silky yet tangled hair with his finger Edward was starting to get the mess of hair back in order. He loved having long hair but he hated the tangles, which he seemed to be battling at the moment. His thoughts soon became occupied with another subject besides his tangles however, and those thoughts circled round his dear brother. Still unable to shake the feeling that something wasn't right, his mind replayed his brothers goodbye. Why did he feel so, uncertain?
Only breaking away from his own thoughts upon hearing the office door opening, Edward stopped combing his hair when his golden eyes meet with black pools of the night sky.
"Your awake Ed, thank goodness we all got kinda worried when you nearly collapsed!" Havoc said in a cheerful tone that yelled he had good news to announce. Looking back and forth between Roy Mustang and Edward Elric, Havoc smirked but said nothing as he watched the two gaze into the others eyes. He always knew they had it bad but he never thought it was like this! As he noticed the other group members coming into the room Havoc quickly went over to Edward and patted him on the shoulder thus snapping him out of the gaze.
The others made their way into the room and two in particular after seeing Edward ran over to the blonde."Boss you're awake!" Breda and Fuery squealed while they squeezed the poor blonde who had woken up not to long ago.
Waiting until the two happy men released him, Edward noticed everyone seemed excited about something and that something wasn't only that he had woken up. "Yeah sorry...I guess I was more exhausted than I originally thought."
"It's fine Ed, we're just glad your alright..." Riza said as she went to sit next to Edward on the couch "just please take better care of your health."
Nodding his head in response seeing as everyone still beamed with joy, Edward sighed "gonna tell me why the hell you are all so damn excited? It's kinda freaking me out."
"Well Roy was finally promoted to Brigadier General, now he stands the same level as Brigadier General Hughes.." Havoc chimed with a smirk "so we are all a step up as well! That's why we're going to celebrate tonight, and now that you're awake why don't you join us Ed?"
"Sure I guess I'll go...i might as well go it's not like I have any food at home anyway." Edward said with a shrug gaining a smile as his response from the others. He watched them run off to get company cars with a smile "they sure are excited."
Roy's response was a nod for his eyes were looking over the blonde whose hair flowed down his muscular yet slim back. Never being able to understand how Edward was able to show off his body frame in these unflattering uniform, Roy did always enjoy how Edward looked in his. Making sure he didn't look like he was gazing over the blonde, Roy turned toward the door and started for it. "We should get going, the others are waiting" Roy said with one last look in the blondes direction before stepping out the door and making his way down the hall.
Falling into step with Roy, once he caught up that is, their walk was fairly brisk through the slim hallways of headquarters passing the many congratulations on the way out the door. His still untied silky hair fanned out behind him as he walked which gained him many surprised looks, but he didn't care all he cared about right now was food, he hadn't eaten since that date and he was starving! Even if his brother left him in the dining hall that morning, it didn't mean he ate, he just poked at his food and went on with the day. They reached the parking lot to see three company cars waiting, one car held Breda and Falman who were accompanied by Maria Ross, Denny Brosh, and one very annoyed Maes Hughes who looked as if he was about to blow a gasket. The other car had Havoc squished in with Major Alex Louis Armstrong and the last car had Riza Hawkeye waving both of them over so they could get in and they could go celebrate.
Upon getting in the car Edward realized his hair was still down and quickly tied it back into it's sleek ponytail that he's taken quite the liking to. The windows were down allowing the wind to blow through his tied up hair giving him the feeling that was what the newly promoted Brigadier General was gawking at. Edward looked at roy with a smirk "So you finally squirmed your way up Roy? took you long enough!"
Not exactly the comment he expected, but none the less Roy was stunned and attempted to ignore Riza's slight giggles. Blinking at the smirking blonde, he was unable to make a comeback, his reasons he knew of but it just had to be now of all times that the blonde completely invades his thought process leaving him as a brain dead zombie. Only snapping out the gaze they shared when Riza announced that they had arrived, Roy quickly got out of the car with a slight stretch and a realization. He and Edward gazed at each other quite often. He made a note to do something with that later but right now he wanted a drink, more like he needed one.
Everyone gathered together at a group of tables once they'd gotten inside and settled themselves in sitting by those they felt most comfortable with at the moment. Edward ended up at a table with Maria Ross, Jean Havoc, Falman and Denny while the new Brigadier General sat along with Riza Hawkeye, Breda, Armstrong, Fuery and Maes Hughes.
Trying his best to not be depressing Edward put on a small smile but knew well that he wasn't fooling anyone. He couldn't help but worry about his brother, this mission was one deemed impossible and it gave him the feeling of loneliness. A loneliness almost as if he would be left with nothing because of that said mission.
"You know Edward, you've really calmed down and matured compared to how you acted before the promise day." Maria said with a smile truly glad to have watched the young blonde grow up and change. Although she could tell he was worried about something, she chose it best not to mention it at the current celebration.
Edward smiled and nodded, he couldn't agree more. He always argued, did things his way, cause problems, acted recklessly, and utterly loathed Roy Mustang. Somehow though he managed to let it all go, realize that he needed to think through his actions with concern for others, and he realized that he loved the man who was now a Brigadier General. Glancing around at all the smiles that surrounded Edward knew that he felt most at home here in central around all the people who helped him when he needed it most and knew well enough that they'd lay down their lives for him. He to would do the same for them. Breaking away from his deep thoughts and joining the conversations his worries fell for the night.
"Roy, congratz on making it to Brigadier General!" Maes said in a mixture of hate, happiness, sarcasm, and of course protection. Slightly glaring at Roy through his slim framed glasses wondering if his friend was planning something he didn't know about.
"Maes...why are you upset now? I haven't done anything but get promoted." Roy said with a sigh while trying his best to ignore Maes hughes with a couple of drinks. The drinks he'd gotten ended up being nothing near the strength he wanted but preferring not to go home drunk Roy had to settle. Being promoted usually would've made him happy but something was missing. What was it? Before he realized it he'd tuned out the babbling hughes and snapped himself back into reality.
"...And don't get me started on how you look as if your planning something!" Maes yelled angrily ignoring the fact that everyone was now paying full attention to his rant and the confused looking Roy. Breathing heavily but calmed down upon feeling a hand on his shoulder only to find it was Edward.
Shaking his head with a sigh "Damn Maes you gotta calm down alright, we came to celebrate his promotion not yell at him in public and your making the public population feel uncomfortable.." Edward pointed at the other restaurant guest who looked rather frightened. Giving the other guest a smile and a wave before apologizing to them, clearly making them happy and instantly calming them down, Edward returned his focus to the current situation. "Now how about we all just go our separate ways so we have no chances of disturbing anyone else tonight?" He suggested with a sigh since as of now it would be to awkward to just stay here at this place.
Everyone agreed quietly and exited the establishment after they all apologized for the disturbance. Havoc left with Armstrong while Maria had to pry Maes off of Edward, who repeatedly apologized even as Maria dragged him into the car that held Fuery, Breda, Denny and Falman, and drove off. Leaving Riza, Roy and Edward to calmly get into the car in silence it was an awkward ending to the nights festivities.
As Riza started to pull out of the parking lot Edward was reminded of something a bit important. He had no food at home. "I know it's a bit out of the way but can we stop at like a grocery store? I just remembered that I have no food at home." Edward asked and was hoping that they wouldn't mind, and since Maes started yelling at Roy all of a sudden he didn't get the chance to eat anything. Thinking back on how terrified the poor waiters where to approach the area he could blame them for not making it with his food.
"Sure, I don't mind we can't leave you without food afterall..." Riza smiled while turning around the car "I know a nice little store to get great food from, and since you never got any food at the interesting dinner we just had then I'm sure you'll appreciate it."
Watching Edwards eyes light up Roy couldn't bare to protest. Besides even if he didn't want to go Riza had already turned around the car heading in the direction of the nice little grocery store she usually dragged him to. Smiling and forgetting that awkward mess from earlier despite the fact that he didn't hear most of it, Roy enjoyed the car ride until they pulled up into a little parking lot.
It was now late evening as they stepped out of the car onto the parking lot of the quaint establishment and by the looks of things it would soon near early night hours. The sky grew dim and the sunset worked on vanishing throwing shades of dark orange red and purple in the distance. Edwards golden eyes and hair shone perfectly with the setting Suns light while Roy's charcoal hair and night sky eyes seemed to shine in that same light but with a flaming passion that refused to burn out. The two men had been gazing out into that distance to admire the beauty at first, but Roy's gaze had long forgotten that light and now was again on Edward. Edward however never left the image of that sunset, his eyes set on the stunning array of colors. Riza cleared her throat seeing as neither of the two would be moving anytime soon, thus catching the attention of both men. With a simple nod as she turned, they all walked into the small building out of the sunsets brilliantly distracting light.
Edward could've been a kid in a candy store if he hadn't been so hungry. He instantly went into chef mode and started to match things together thus creating multiple delicious meals in minutes. Knowing that it would be him all alone for a while Edward only choose food that would be enough for himself. His steps like an exciting yet swift dance that lead him to exactly what was needed, so many new cooking ideas flooding through his thoughts. This was his element.
Roy watched Edward expertly pick out things as he continuously came up with new ideas for him to cook. Never knowing that the blonde loved to cook so much nor that he seemed to be an expert at it, Roy was stunned. His eyes following Edwards movements and pure joy, how could he not smile? Just being able to see Edward happy could make anyone smile!
"Sir...?" Riza questioned softly with a smile. She stood next to Roy and just as he, she was watching Edward.
"Yes Riza?" Roy finally replied after a few moments silenced.
Now she turned to look at Roy seriously "do you love him?" She watched, as her friends gaze never wavered from its target.
"Yeah..."
"I'm happy that you've found someone to care so deeply for," Riza said while returning her attention to watching Edward "just don't screw it up."
Roy wanted to protest but the blonde in question was facing them with his brow raised in question. Shaking his head as if to say it was nothing, Roy smirked "finally found everything or did you just clean out the store?"
"Oh please we all know I could, but I have better taste than that, or has the Brigadier General already forget something so small?" Edward flung back with a smirk "is the fact that you've finally been promoted getting to your head or was is your usual oversized ego?"
Rolling his eyes at the blonde man who smirked as if to challenge him. They both burst into fits of laughter before walking over and paying for all the food. Roy was glad he ended up coming along but now as they stepped back outside it was dark. The night air has long since taken over, with stars shining here and there, and a crystal clear pearl colored Full moon.
They all got into the car along with Edwards collection of food and made their way toward the Elric Household. It wasn't very far and in fact the Elric house was closest. It took but a few moments to reach the neat home Edward shared with Alphonse and the group got out and carried in groceries. Riza went back to sit in the car while Roy decided to stay in and help put away the last of the many groceries Edward had purchased. It didn't take long for Roy to realize that the flaming passion he felt earlier was back and that if he didn't get out soon he could do something he'd regret. Quickly putting away all that was left of the food Roy sighed briefly in relief before turning his attention back to the blonde. He was left speechless.
Edward had taken off his stuffy military jacket leaving just his white button up shirt that lay under it and the pants made of the jackets stuffy material. If Roy hadn't been there he would've stripped from the uniform completely while walking down the hall to get pj's. Walking roy to the door Edward couldn't help but laugh a bit.
"What's so funny?" Roy questioned while trying his best not to eye over the blonde before him.
"You are, your reaction is almost like your trying to be sexy but your pained almost like you're constipated." Edward laughed at the now wide eyed man. Smiling at the man that shone brightly in the full moon moonlight, this is how he wanted it to be. He wanted to be by Roy's side.
Roy shook it off and bit his lip, he wanted to kiss that smile off of that handsome face so badly that it did hurt. All it took was for Edwards hair to fall slowly out of its ponytail for Roy to nearly lose it. Before he realized his own movements Roy grabbed Edward's wrists and pinned him to the wall. In this position the blonde couldn't run away. His flaming passion filled eyes gazed into the surprised yet almost wanting golden ones. His grip on the other man's wrist was tight and he was centimeters away from Edward's lips, those perfect lips he wanted to taste so badly. This was his chance. He was losing it, feeling Edwards heavy breaths against his skin, against his own lips brushing his senses but he loosened his grip on the wrist and started backing away. This isn't what he wanted. He wanted it to be passionate and wanted it to hold no regret, yet what he felt now was pure at utter regret even if their lips didn't touch.
"Roy..." Edwards voice broke through though it cracked and shook as it did so. He nearly pleaded even if it sounded as not, he wanted to taste Roy Mustangs lips but the man before him had retreated. His heart still skipped beats but felt as if it would sink when the strong hands let go completely and the dark eyes filled with regret and painful sorrows. Why did he look so destroyed? Reaching for the man's sleeve as he stormed out the door Edward wanted him to come back, he needed him to come back. "Don't leave me alone" he whispered softly.
Roy broke away from the hand that grabbed his sleeve ignoring the whispered words and walked out the door toward the military car. "What the hell was I thinking!" Roy muttered angrily to himself partly glad they turned on no lights otherwise Riza would've saw his anger and she would've seen Edward trying to stop him from going. He couldn't be reading things right, Edward didn't want him, he was nothing compared to the blonde. Trying his best to conceal his frustration as he got into the car Roy hoped he didn't make things worse with that idiotic stunt.
Unable to describe the hurt he felt watching Roy walk away, Edward stood in the doorway and listened to the car drive down the distant road. Out of all the times they've gazed at one another, all the time they've spent together, did Roy really think they couldn't be together? He felt crushed but decided that this was the end of it all, he had plans to build. Closing the front door, locking it, and stepping away, he wondered down the hall falling into his bed completely ignoring the fact that he still had on his military uniform and fell asleep.
Upon waking that morning he decided he really wanted to slap himself for his stupidity. Brushing his charcoal colored hair out of his face, Roy Mustang didn't want to do anything today but simply think about his actions and a way to fix them. What he did was idiotic and the fact that he continued to run away from it made the entire ordeal seem worse. Was he just drunk and imagined it all or did he really pin Edward against the wall? If he really did such a thing then why the hell did he run away from it especially since Edward didn't fight back. Images of lustful pools of liquid gold flashing through his thoughts, Roy wanted to slam his head through a wall. "How the hell can I be so stupid?!" He yelled while ruffling his already messy hair out of frustration. Feeling like complete crap he faced his fear and called in sick, he had things to think over and reflect on. "I'm a fucking idiot..."
-Edward-
Edward had arrived early to work this morning and honestly they should be proud of him for doing so. He walked through the halls looking as if everything was the usual when in reality he wanted to talk to Roy. He made up his mind about deciding whether to go through with asking the Brigadier General his feelings today after what happened last night. Determined to do so, if anything went wrong he'd take it as a sign. Edward wasn't just questioning things because Roy pinned him to the wall but also from what Maes yelled at Roy about. Replaying the words that Maes spoke through his thoughts as he walked, Edward walked down the current long empty hallway to the new office of Roy Mustang.
-THE NIGHT BEFORE-
Everyone sat peacefully together, no one was trying to get drunk and no one was attempting alchemy either. All in all it was going pretty well. Havoc leaned back in his chair calmly seeing as everyone was doing ok despite them all being worried about Edward since he seemed upset about something and more then a little worn out.
The room was filled with a light mood as light conversation and laughter floated through the atmosphere. Even as a semi formal restaurant the feel of it was similar to a café making it fairly comfortable. Despite the comfortable feel to the place Maes grew more agitated just by seeing Roy. He wanted to celebrate his friend who finally got promoted but with this promotion meant that Edward would be spending longer hours in a more closed off office with the man. Maes didn't disapprove of the idea of the two being together but he didn't like how Roy was starting to treat the situation and that's what pissed him off the most. He was now at his boiling point and couldn't help but explode.
Roy raised his brow in question to his odd friend who now seemed more annoyed then usual. In all honesty he didn't even want to know anymore. "Maes...why are you upset now? I haven't done anything but get promoted."
"Do you have any idea how your actions are playing out right now Roy? You know damn well what my job is so I can tell exactly what direction your heading with the way your rolling, and it's not a pleasant one." Maes began to rant gradually getting louder and standing on his feet to point accusations at his friend. "Are you aiming to be so cruel?! Look Roy I've told you once and I'll say it again, if you do anything to hurt him your dead!"
Everyone's attention was on the angry rants of Maes Hughes that just came from nowhere. Everyone knew who Maes was talking about and they all understood, well everyone but Edward. He couldn't grasp the concept of why he better not get hurt by Roy. His full focus on the yelling man he had to put the pieces together.
"Your so careless, and latley your reverting back to your heartlessness, you've just flat out pissed me off and don't even get me started on how you look as if your planning something!" Maes continued not noticing all eyes where on him. He took a deep breath "Don't think that I'm going to allow you to do what you wish Roy, I won't let you have Ed I could care less if your my friend right now!"
-CURRENT TIME, CENTRAL HEADQUARTERS-
Edward was still in shock by those last words Maes said before he himself decided to stop the current situation. What did Maes mean by not letting Roy have him? Shaking it from his toughts he neared the new office doors. Removing any questionable emotions from his facial expressions, he walked into the office only to find that no one was there. Both disappointed and confused Edward went into the separate office he and his comrades shared. His golden hair tied back in a simple ponytail and his uniform somehow un wrinkled, despite the fact he slept in it, he looked like his usual self but he sure as hell didn't feel like it.
"Hey Ed!"
"Boss!"
"Good Morning Edward."
Greeting with happy smiles the group noticed nothing out of the ordinary about their comrade. They were always glad to see the blonde after all he was the reason this job could be even a little enjoyable and a lot more interesting.
"Goodmorning to you all as well." Edward greeted with a big grin and a wave "so where's the new Brigadier General? Is he running late or something?"
Havoc, Breda, and Fuery blinked in confusion. How did Edward not know that the General called in sick today, and that he sounded like crap when he did so. Havoc turned his attention to Riza considering he himself had no idea what to say. All of them grew curious over the matter since this was an unusual event, Edward was usually the first person Roy told about anything yet he didn't have the slightest clue.
Looking up at Edward, Riza frowned "He's not coming to work today Edward, he didn't tell you?" She questioned in confusion.
Edwards eyes widened for a moment before he shook his head in response. Roy didn't come today, what more of a sign could he ask for? Feeling defeated Edward tried to shake off his rush of feelings about the situation. Realizing all eyes were on him in concern he tried his best to give the group a smile but doubted it came out as a convincing one.
"Did something happen?" Havoc questioned seeing as Roy was trying to avoid it, well whatever "it" was which isn't something the flame alchamist usually did. Now feeling a little annoyed by Mustangs non appearance at work Havoc tried his best to not walk to the man's door and beat it down.
"Not really..." Edward said with a sigh before turning his back to everyone to hide his appearance of sadness. "I see it now, I understand, he's running away..." He spoke softly before leaving the room not even announcing that he'd be going for the day. Roy Mustang was avoiding him, perfect now he knew Roy didn't truly feel the same. He had to escape and ignored the calls of his name as he walked briskly down the hallway attempting to clear his mind of a charcoal haired man.
Momentarily the group was stunned. Not only was their newly appointed Brigadier General acting strange but so seemed Edward which screamed that something happened between the two sometime last night after leaving the restaurant.
Havoc looked at Riza, who was just as surprised as he was, with a questioning brow "Riza what did he mean by Roy was running away?"
"I honestly don't know, maybe something happened while I waited in the car for him at Edwards house...but what could happen in only 5minutes?" Riza said trying to put the pieces together. Something seems off but what was it? She swore those two just had to be as complicated as possible and at this point it may start to finally aggravate her.
The group was silent they had no idea what was going on anymore, wait just what exactly was going on? They couldn't tell if they should be pissed off or happy about whatever had happened either way this was just becoming even more of a mess no matter how they viewed it.
"Well whatever did happen Edward didn't seem to happy that Roy was running away from it." Maes said as he made his entrance into the office sounding and looking rather serious as well as slightly upset "I need to talk to you guys about something."
"Of course what do we need to discuss?" Riza questioned while deciding to return to finalizing some papers.
"The Fuehrer heard about my outburst at dinner last night, and that i was being protective over Edward..." Maes began with a serious tone despite the current situation "he wants no such things to happen again...so he's..." He just couldn't bare the thought it was already difficult enough as is but now he had to inform the others who cared for the blonde that they all had to help him carry out such an order. tightening his grip on the door frame he leaned against Maes went momentarily speechless.
"He's what Hughes? We don't have all day.." Riza said while continuing the paperwork figuring Maes was causing nonsense and Edward would be told to take off work for a while so Maes's could get back to as well as focus on his own work that needed to get done.
"He's sending Edward to the Northern Wall of Briggs." Maes said rather quickly yet sadly. His green eyes looking to the floor refusing to look at the others knowing well that their faces would show pain. He was already ashamed, this was all his fault.
"WHAT?!" The group yelled in unison.
Taking a deep shaky breath Maes prepared himself for the rest of the information that needed to be voiced. "By order of the Fuehrer We are to retrieve Edward Elric and get him on the train to Brigs mountains and make sure that he will depart on the train that leaves this afternoon." Maes said with a slight frown.
Everyone was utterly shocked and could find no words as of yet to speak on the matter. They all turned their gazes to the floor some of them not able to move from being stunned while the rest slammed their fist on the desk out of rage.
Maes bit his lip but shook off his annoyance with himself the best he could before looking back up to the group "I hate to say this but we better get going we only have a few hours."
"Why the hell would he be needed at the Northern Wall?!" Havoc questioned angrily as he stood along with the others whom fell silent. He knew the others all had the same questions he had but he also knew they wouldn't be getting any answers at this point in time. "This entire thing just aggravates me...why Ed of all people?'
"I'm not sure but...this is all my fault...I'm sorry." Maes said sadly now looking up at the others "I'm so sorry."
Riza walked over to Maes and placed her hand slowly on his shoulder "Hughes I don't blame you for this, none of us do all that matters now is that its an order by the main man in charge therefore we must assume its for good reason..whether we like it or not.."
"We better go find him we don't want to get chewed out for being upset out this..." Havoc said with a sigh before making the first move towards the door.
They all filed out of the room walking together in a quick yet abnormal pace, both upset and serious, going down the halls in search of their blonde comrade Edward Elric.
