Chapter 5

"Who is she?" Armin asked.

"You don't know me?" Annie asked, the surprised tone in her voice was clear. Realized she blurted out something suspicious as Hanji knew they've never know each other, she cleared her throat. "I mean, we've met before a few days ago when I first came here, you were in the tank with your fellow mermaids." She said, successfully regained her cold mask.

"Is that so?" he said unsure. "I'm sorry. I don't remember." He smiled apologetically.

Annie was going to asked what happened to him but Hanji start the explanation before she could ask her. "Well, as you know, this guy here was a mermaid when you first see him, right?" Annie nodded at the question. "Just recently I've been successfully recreated a potion to turn mermaids into humans. Awesome right?" she said in excitement that almost creepy. "Well, I explained to them that I need one of them to test out the potion, to see whether is it working or not. The other two looked freaked out, but Armin volunteered to do the test."

Of course they would. Anyone would freak out when you told them that they'll be a guinea pig for your experiment, especially if you asked them with that creepy-mad-scientist's expression. Annie thought.

"Yeah, there's some side effect after the change that didn't match the record we have." Hanji said with a questioning expression, thinking about what's wrong with the potion she made that she knew was the perfect copy of the original.

"The record? What record? What place is this before it became the Recon's HQ?" Annie asked, a genuine surprise colored her question. She didn't know that the record was still existed. Not after she make sure to set a fire in the room where they kept all the experiment records.

Hanji raised an eyebrow hearing her tone. "Yeah. Levi kind of found it. This was once a place belongs to an organization not much different as ours, but since they done an illegal thing as they murdered many of the creatures as tests subjects to be made as weapons. They turned the creatures into a mixed wild beast and trained them to fight and kill then sold them in the dark market. We help the military police and barged in to stop them but somehow half of the building we presume to have kept all the records of the experiments and most of the lab were burnt. When we finally managed to put out the fire, this place was ruined that we need to rebuild it as the higher ups agreed to let us have it in condition we have to contribute new things we got from the experiments for all to learn. Oh, by the way he's the one who remade the potion based on a no longer useable potion he found along-" Hanji stopped abruptly, realized she said too much despite her rising suspicion towards the girl. "Why do you want to know?" she asked straightly.

Shit! I just blurt something suspicious again! "Uh, no. Just curious." She answered using her usual tone to cut the suspicion, but seems like it didn't work.

So the feeling I got when I saw this place was not my imagination. This is the place where those who attacked our village and kidnapped us as test subjects had brought us! Shit! I didn't want to come back to this place ever again! Annie thought sourly.

Still, Hanji had another plan in her head. She smiled and turned towards the waiting Armin. "Armin, this is Annie Leonhart. She is new here and she'll be accompanying you from now on." She smiled softly to him.

"Why would I need her for?" he asked confusedly.

"I think with someone around your age, you'll be accustomed to your new limbs faster. Annie here could show you the way to get used to your new environment." She answered and turned to Annie. "He lost his memories as mermaids. It's one of the side effects of the potion. Don't worry, it's temporary. In fact, he began to regain his memories back bit by bit." She said before Annie could ask. "And as a plus point, somehow he could speak and understands any other language that we use. Amazing! What a mystery, right?" she shrieked in excitement as her eyes glint maniacally as her breath became ragged. She seemed to forget her suspicion for a while.

"I'm sorry for not recognizing you, Annie." He said to her apologetically as he smiled. But the smile didn't stay long, his face turned confused. "Still I have the feeling that I know you well. But since I can't remember any of it and Hanji san said that we just met not long ago when I was still in my mermaid body. " he said curiously but decided to drop the matter. "Well, I should know the answer when I regained all of my memories. Please take care of me, Annie." He smiled happily to her.

"Yeah." She said. Still trying to digest all the information she got. And to think of a way to slip out of Hanji's suspicion. And for a few days, Annie do what she was told by Hanji, to make Armin used to his new life. And to make him remember all memories about his old one were.

"Eren, I have something to talk with you." Levi said seriously. Eren who was munching on the piece of apple Levi cut for him. He turned to look at him with such an innocent face as he gave a questioning look at Levi. Levi was silent for a moment, unsure how to say it in that'll be easy for Eren to understand.

"Levi?" Eren asked questioningly as he tilted his head. "What - wrong?" he asked with a pause between the words.

He looked so cute that Levi almost decided to not ask him about it. He cleared his throat. "I want to ask you something. It's okay if you don't want to, I won't force you." He let out a big sigh. "Do you want to become a human?"

Hearing the question that he understands, Eren's eyes widen as he stares at the man in front of him. He didn't move for a while as they stare deep into each other's eyes. And to Levi's shock, Eren broke into a big smile and gave an enthusiastic nod.

This time, Levi's the one who hesitate. "Eren, are you sure you want to do this? I mean, once you drink this there's no way for you to turn back into mermaid, ever again." He asked him in a demanding tone as he show the bottle of potion to Eren.

To answer Levi's hesitation, Eren pouted at him and snatch the bottle from Levi's hand. He opened it and poured the liquid into his mouth so fast that Levi only managed to let out a surprised gasp and only managed to snatch the empty bottle. "Eren!" he said, didn't believe what just happened. Eren gave him a reassuring smile and bring his hand to Levi's face to stroke his cheek. Levi's hand brought itself to reach Eren's on his cheek, lean to his touch as he closed his eyes, until Eren let out a groan.

Levi's eyes snapped open upon the sound as he caught the collapsed Eren. He stepped into the pool where Eren was so that the wall of the pool won't get between them and he could hold Eren better. He could've carry Eren onto the bed in his room but that way the sheets will absorbs all the water and Eren will get dry too quickly. "Eren!" he yelled. "Eren, what's wrong?!"

Eren felt like his body was set a flame. It was just a warm sensation on his stomach after he drunk the liquid. But now it was burning to the tip of his toes. He could no longer have the strength as he collapsed into Levi's arm. He could no longer use his senses. His eyes were shut as he tried to get over the burning sensation that brought tear to his eyes. His mouth was closed to hold the yells of pain from getting heard as low groans replaced them. His skin was hot until the state of numbness, left only the heat to feel. He could only hear the sound of someone calling him.

Levi? Was his last thought before his consciousness slipped away.

After a whole day, Armin's memories began to come back fully. He remembers who Annie was, and without Hanji's knowing, they began to make a plan to run from the Corps.

"Annie, don't you have some explanation before we start the plan to get out of here?" Armin demanded.

Annie sighed as she told Armin the same thing Reiner had told the rest. "And do you know, Armin? Tragically, this place was the place where we're kept as test subject, or once was." She added.

"Ah, I'm sorry, Annie, I don't mean to…" Armin said apologetically.

"It's fine, Armin." Annie cut him. "Let's just start this and don't forget to tell it to me in an easy-to-understand way so that stupid Reiner could understand them when I explain it to them." Annie said boringly as Armin chuckled and start to plan for their escape.

Eren! Eren!

Someone was calling him.

Eren!

The voice seems so familiar and worried that brought his consciousness back slowly. His eyes began to fluttered open as the voice heard closer, not far above him. "Eren!" he heard it clearly this time as he opened his eyes towards it.

"Le-vi?" he groaned and flinched as he felt a sharp pain across his brain when he tried to sit up.

"Eren! Don't move. Just lay back down." Levi's voice was full of concern and worry, very different from his usual monotone voice and very rare to be heard.

He lay back down as Levi said and realized they're in the bed, Levi's bed.
