Chapter 6
I quickly ran to catch up with Lin as she walked at a fast pace to the elevator.
"We have to go all the way to the top floor-" She began.
"That's where Yubaba lives right?" I cut in. Lin looked down at me with surprise.
"Yeah." Lin replied. "How did you know?"
"Um… Lucky guess… I mean, it makes sense to me." Lin shrugged and I hoped that she would be satisfied by my answer. I need to learn to keep my mouth shut. It would be hard to explain to everyone that I know everything about them from a movie that I've seen ten thousand times. I stepped onto the elevator with her as she pulled a lever and the elevator rattled and began moving up. I watched as we quickly went up and the bathhouse came into view. The whole place seemed to be enveloped in steam as workers quickly ran around on the wooden floors bringing thing to customers and cleaning thing out.
I wonder if I'll be able to do this… I'm not a very hard worker and I've never been good with staying focused on the task at hand. I might just give up after the first job… The thought made me light headed and queasy. If I couldn't work then would never be able to make it home.
The elevator came to a spot and I stepped behind Lin. She poked her head out to make sure no one was around then motioned for me to follow her. We ran quickly through the hall to another elevator and waited for a woman to step out. Once she was gone, we ran in and Lin pulled another lever.
"We're halfway there. Just stay close." Lin whispered.
"Right." I nodded. A few seconds later the elevator began to slow down.
"Here we go…" Lin said. She jumped when the elevator stopped and I peeked over her shoulder. In front of us was a large white creature wearing a red hat the reminded me of a ramen bowl. "The Radish Spirit!" Lin said in a cheerful voice. A small grin touched my face. I loved the Radish Spirit. He always made me laugh when I was little. The Radish Spirit lifted one hand up and made a grumbling noise that I couldn't decipher as he pointed up indicating that he wanted to go up.
"Sorry sir, this elevator doesn't go any higher. You'll have to take another one, thank you." Lin quickly bowed and began to walk off. I stayed right on her heels and stared at her back as I heard the squeak, thump, squeak, thump of the Radish Spirit's footsteps as he followed us. I turned my head and caught a brief glimpse of him as we crossed a bridge to the other side of the floor. Lin walked calmly and didn't show any sign of concern. I tried to keep on a straight face as well, but a nervous smile kept creeping up on my face.
When we made it to the fourth elevator, I stood by the wall and Lin covered me with her body as we waited for the elevator. The Radish Spirit stood close by until the elevator doors opened and three spirits along with an employee that looked like a frog came out.
"Step up to the right please gentlemen. Your rooms are right this way." The employee said. I watched as the three spirits in the elevator stepped out and Lin moved in front of me so they couldn't see me. The frog employee stepped out behind the guests and walked past us, but as the Radish Spirit began to enter the elevator, the frog stopped. He sniffed the air and I froze. "Lin?"
"Whaaaaaat?" Lin shoved me into the elevator as she turned to face him and I nearly fell on my face. As the Radish Spirit began to turn around in the elevator, I was squished between the wall and his fat body.
Oh crap! I felt my cheek squish my face so that my right eye closed and I was hardly able to see Lin and the worker she was speaking with.
"You smell just like a human!" I heard the worker say.
"Oh really?" Lin replied sarcastically.
"Where's it coming from Lin? Show it to me." Lin pulled out her roasted newt.
"Is this what you smell?"
The frog's eyes widened and he began drooling. "Roasted… NEWT!" He tried to grab the newt, but Lin dangled it above his head just out of reach.
"No way frog! I'm saving every last bite for myself…" Lin smiled as she said the last few words and I could see the hurt look on the frog's face as she teased him.
"Oh please! Can't you just give me a leg? How could you be so cruel? Can't you share?!" The frog begged as he jumped around and desperately tried to grab the newt. Lin continued to hold the supposedly delicious treat out of his reach and turned to the Radish Spirit.
"If you want to go up, pull the lever on your right!" She said. The Radish Spirit nodded with a smile to Lin as I tried to push past his fat thigh. My right shoulder broke through and I yanked my arm free. I reached for the lever, but much to my dismay, I was just out of reach. I wriggled and tried to push myself forward, but I was only able to move an inch at a time. Suddenly, the Radish Spirit shifted his weight a little and I had enough leeway to move forward, put two fingers on the lever, and push it down. The elevator doors closed just as I saw Lin stuff the roasted newt in her mouth.
I sighed with relief and slowly put my hands by my side. It was hard to breathe since I was still squished between The Radish Sprit's leg and the wall, but I didn't say anything. The elevator came to a stop which I assumed was meant to be the Radish Spirit's stop. It was a dim and quiet corridor and shadows of people inside the rooms could be seen. He pulled the lever again and we continued to move up to Yubaba's floor.
Now curiosity got the better of me. I hadn't been able to get a good look at the Radish Spirit's face yet, so I slowly looked up at his white face. He quickly saw me staring at him and gave me a sidelong glance and made an irritated sound. I quickly looked away and stared at the floor.
As the elevator came to a stop and the doors opened the Radish Spirit surveyed the area to make sure that it was safe. Slowly I squished my way past him and stepped out into the large hallway. The tile floor was cold under my feet. I turned around and bowed to the Radish Spirit as the elevator doors closed, then I turned to my left and saw a large wooden door. I slowly walked over to it nervously and reached for the door handle, but then stopped.
Yubaba wanted Chihiro to knock first. I should do my best to make a good impression. I closed my hand into a fist and knockedhard on the door. I jumped as the door opened on its own along with a dozen behind it and a raspy voice echoed down the hall.
"Well... come in." It said calmly. I took a deep breath as the butterflies in my stomach began flapping their wings like crazy. My feet planted themselves into the ground and I couldn't move a muscle. "I said come IN!" the voice said and suddenly some invisible force yanked the collar of my shirt and dragged me forwards. Each door slammed behind me as I flew down the hall, was dragged to the right, and was thrown into a large room.
I rolled to a stop and rubbed my head as I looked around.
I had finally made it to Yubaba's office.
