Tony and Mona were sitting in the hotel talking when Angela walked in. Anxiety and tension caused her to be exhausted. She sighed as she took off her coat and hung it up. Angela wanted to fall onto the floor, melt into nothing and forget the situation. Since that couldn't be done, she just wanted to find some time by herself and cry.
"We've been talking about what we'll do for Jonathan. I don't care what happens, we cannot leave Los Angeles without him."
"We may not have a choice." She mumbled.
"You're giving up? You are giving him to Michael?"
"Of course not! He's still my son and I love him, but maybe Michael's right."
Tony's eyebrows pinched together as he looked at her with his lips firmly pressed together. "What'd he say to you?"
"What?"
"What has Michael said to change your mind?"
"He's married and I'm not. He feels Jonathan will have a more stable life with them. They have more money and can provide more for him. He said I don't let anybody into my life. Maybe it's true. Jonathan and I aren't as close he was to his father."
"Sure boys need a man in their life. Being able to pee outside together bonds all males. But you have that. You hired Tony." Mona pointed out and Tony smiled.
"Think Angela, when Jonathan is with you he's happy because he's home and sleeps in his bed. He knows we're never that far away. When he's here, he's in that awful boarding school and miserable. The usual light in his eyes wasn't there when we saw him a while back. You and Michael both love Jonathan, his blood is full of your genes and traits, but you can give him something Michael can't."
Angela sat down on the couch and looked up at her "What Mother?" Her eyes filled with tears. "What can I offer him?"
"Happiness dear." She touched Angela's chin. "He's barely smiled at all since we've been here because he hates that school."
"And that's my fault. I never should have let Jonathan come here."
"You are not to blame for your ex-husband being a lousy father and rotten human being."
"Look, Mona and I talked this over- because of my time in baseball I have contacts all over the country. I'll go home and get Samantha while you get Jonathan out of school and we'll leave. We can't go back to Fairfield, but you'll have Jonathan and that's the most important thing."
"No."
"But Angela,"
"Tony, I'm not going to make you and Mother spend the rest of your lives looking over your shoulder and always running. Not to mention Samantha. She needs stability. You came to Connecticut to give her a better life. I won't take that from her."
"What if you don't get Jonathan-"
"If I take him without Michael's knowledge I'll be a kidnapper and when they find us, which you know they will eventually, Michael will get Jonathan permanently This is really hurting me, trust me on that Tony, but I can't take Jonathan on the road. I can't and I won't."
One afternoon, Michael walked through Jonathan's school to have a talk with him. Upon entering the office, he saw Jonathan sitting with his feet dangling off the chair.
"Daddy!" Jonathan exclaimed as he turned and saw Michael standing there. He leaned down on the chair.
"Hello Jonathan."
"What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to see you. Ask a question."
"What's that?" Jonathan's voice squeaked.
"Are you happy here in California?"
"Well..." Jonathan paused. "I love being able to see you more and I like Heather. It never snows, but I miss Mom and Grandma. Tony's really funny and I like him."
"What about this school?"
"School's school, but I do miss riding the bus with Sam and not wearing a uniform."
"Would you like it better if Heather and I got you a tutor and took you with us when we make documentaries?"
"That'd be cool! But I'd really miss Mom."
"You are close to your mom aren't you?"
"She ca be weird and pretty busy sometimes, but she's always there and I know she loves me."
"Angela was a wonderful woman, even if we couldn't make it work. She's done a great job with you. Last time I saw you before, you were just a little guy. I come home and you're seven. You are a wonderful boy and we have your mother to thank for that."
"Don't forget Grandma and Tony."
"Yes, we cant forget them."
"Daddy?"
"Yeah little tiger?" Jonathan frowned making Michael laugh. "What?"
"I love you... Whether I live with you or Mom."
"I know."
"Are you saying I can go home and be with Mom? No matter where you live, you'll always be my dad."
Michael nodded. "Thanks Jonathan. I'll always love you too." Jonathan hugged his neck.
"I knew Grandma would come through."
"What?"
"She said she wasn't leaving Los Angeles without me. Grandma and Tony promised me that." He said with a wide smile spread across his face.
