"You are the piece of me, I wish I didn't need." –Zedd

"I'm so tired," Dylan leaned her sweaty body against Kristen.

"Dylan, don't let the coach see you like that, look alive!" Massie scolded.

Dylan groaned. "I better drop fifty pounds."

This was the fifteenth time this week that Massie had to tell her too, "look alive". Coach Jen didn't mess around and Massie wanted all of her friends to make the squad. Try-outs were tomorrow and Massie was starting to get nervous, they all had to look perfect tomorrow.

"So Mass, what time should we be at your house for the sleepover?" Claire reminded Massie about the annual PC Friday night sleepover.

"Well. . . Umm. . ." Massie stuttered. "It can't be at my house."

"Why not?" Alicia asked. She was always so nosy.

"My house is getting redecorated so we can't be in there." Massie lied.

"I didn't know that." Claire picked her cheer bag off the ground.

"You don't know everything, Claire." Massie rolled her eyes.

"My house is good." Dylan volunteered.

Massie gave a small smile, thanking Dylan for stopping the interrogation. "We can meet at eight."

"Okay I'm going to meet Cam. See you guys at eight." Claire left through the gym doors.

"Anyone want to grab some frozen yogurt?" Kristen asked.

"I'm in," Dylan quickly raised her hand.

"Me too," Alicia said.

The girls picked up their bags. They headed out the gym door. Alicia's driver was already waiting in front of the school.

"You coming, Mass?" Kristen asked.

"No thanks, Isaac is on his way, and I have some work to do at home before the sleepover." Massie said.

"Alright, see you tonight."

The girls waved and then got into Alicia's car, leaving Massie all alone. She had already called Isaac, but he said he was taking Mrs. Block to the city. Again.

Massie didn't know why her mother kept going to the city and she didn't want to know why. It couldn't be for a good reason. She liked to pretend her mother didn't go out almost every night.

Massie sat down on the school steps. She leaned against a light post and began to drift off to sleep. She knew how weird she looked, but she was too tired to care. She hasn't slept for days, weeks, maybe even months. She just can't seem to sleep through the night with all the things going on in her life.

Soon she drifted off to sleep, enjoying the peace and quiet outside of the school. Maybe by the time she woke up, Isaac would be here.

"Block, are you sleeping?" Massie heard a familiar voice. She still didn't open her eyes, she hoped she was dreaming.

"Block," She heard the voice again.

"Massie," The voice grew louder.

"Hello!" The voice screamed in her ear.

"What!?" Massie jumped, he nearly gave her a heart attack.

She looked over to find Derrick Harrington was the owner of the annoying voice in her ear. She should have known it was him. He was sitting next to her wearing his football pads and holding his football helmet on his lap. Massie could still see the dirt and sweat on his face from practice. Gross. Well, maybe a little cute, but mostly gross.

"What are you doing?" Derrick asked.

"I should ask you the same question." Massie wiped the mascara that smeared under her eyes during her nap.

Derrick started to laugh. "You've doing this a lot."

"Doing what?"

"Sleeping."

"Have not," Massie, argued.

She knew it was true though, just yesterday Derrick saw her sleeping during study hall. Not to mention she kept nodding off in her other classes. Derrick seems to be the only one to notice her lack of sleep.

"What's going on with you?" Derrick asked, almost serious.

"As if it's any of your business." Massie snapped.

Derrick held up his hands in defense. "Sorry I asked."

Derrick got up from the stairs and started towards his car. Massie suddenly felt a little bad for yelling at him.

"Derrick," Massie called his name and Derrick immediately turned around with a smile. "Sorry for the hostility."

"I'm used to it." Derrick shrugged, then turned and continued walking to his car.

Massie slumped against the light post again. At this rate, she wouldn't get home in time for the sleepover. She would have to call Alicia for a ride and she really didn't want to do that. Maybe she could call Isaac again, or her father.

"Hey Block," Derrick called from his car. "Ever taken a ride in a Mercedes?"

Massie smiled. Derrick always knew what to say. Maybe, sometimes he wasn't so bad.

Marvil Estate

Living Room

"Everything will be alright, if you keep me next to you." – Taylor Swift

Dylan slammed her phone shut after the fifth time trying to call Massie. "Where the heck is she?"

"It's not like her to be late." Claire worried.

"Maybe she had other plans. This is why she didn't get frozen yogurt with us." Alicia suggested.

"I'm glad she is late." Kristen said as she typed on her laptop.

The rest of girls looked at her with confused expressions.

Kristen felt their stares and looked up to explain. "I haven't found out anything about that fire."

"Crap," Alicia sighed.

The girls heard Dylan's mom come down the stairs. She was wearing a green dress that come just above her knees. Her hair was curled and she had make-up on her face. This only meant one thing.

Mari Lee Marvil had a date tonight.

"You look awesome Ms. Marvil," Alicia gushed.

"Who is the lucky guy?" Kristen shut her laptop.

"Please tell me it's not Mr. Myner again." Dylan groaned.

The girls, including Ms. Marvil, started to laugh. Everyone remembered the seventh grade trip to Lake Placid where Ms. Marvil shamelessly flirted with Mr. Myner.

"I can promise you that it is not him." Mari Lee shook her head. "This man is much more handsome and successful."

"So he's loaded?" Alicia asked.

"Girls, there are more important qualities in a man than his salary."

The doorbell rang and Ms. Marvil started towards to door. All the girls followed her, hoping to get a look at her date. They were interested to find out who caught Ms. Marvils eye this time.

Mari Lee put her hand on the doorknob. "But if the man does have millions to his name, it's not a bad thing."

The door opened and instead of her date, Massie stood there with her over-night bag.

"Look there's the car!" Mari Lee waved. "Bye girls, have fun."

"Sorry I'm late," Massie walked inside and shut the door. "What are you guys doing?"

"Checking out Dylan's new daddy," Alicia snickered.

"Shut up," Dylan punched her arm. "Let's go upstairs."

Dylan led them up her giant staircase to her bedroom. The girls then began setting up their sleeping bags into their usual circle.

"First off, anyone got any news on the fire." Massie started.

The girls lay on their stomachs and faced the inside of the circle. It felt like they were back in the seventh grade again. It was as if they had not been apart for two years.

"Alright I have something," Dylan spoke up first. "A girl from my history class told me that she saw Dune Baxter lurking around the school just one hour before the fire started."

"Well, that's not what the gossip is." Alicia disagreed. "Everyone is saying that Colton Grey was the one there before the fire started."

"Who is Colton Grey?" Kristen asked.

"Public school bad boy and Olivia Ryan's ex-boyfriend." Alicia answered. She knew everything about everyone at Westchester.

"Oh, so it's probably him!"

"This is a start," Massie smiled. "Now we have two suspects, a witness, and an ex-girlfriend to talk too."

"Maybe we will actually be able to figure this out." Claire said.

"Of course we will, Claire." Massie rolled her eyes. "We are the Pretty Committee."

The girls started laughing and high-fived each other in the middle of the circle.
