INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-MORNING
Students fill the hallways as KATHY, wearing a blue blazer, white blouse with blue jeans, and black flats, walk down the hallway and sees ETHAN, who's wearing a black jacket, white tee shirt, blue jeans, and black sneakers.
Kathy: Hey.
Ethan: Hey.
Kathy: So…the other night was pretty…funny.
Ethan: Yeah. My mom and your grandmother didn't come home until like midnight. But we both know what they're trying to do.
Kathy: They're trying to get us together. But I had fun studying with you…that was the first time studying was actually fun for me.
Ethan: Yeah, who'd know that you can compare a chemical to cake batter?
Kathy: Well, if it counts, that cake tasted pretty good.
Ethan: I could tell by how much you threw up after tasting it.
She looks at him in sympathy.
Kathy: I'm sorry. My stomach…has just been acting crazy lately.
Ethan looks to see BEN, wearing a long sleeve burgundy button-down shirt with black pants and black dress shoes, walk past them. Ethan looks at him in concern and rejection. Kathy notices this.
Kathy: Okay. What happened between you two?
Ethan: What are you talking about?
Kathy: You and Ben. I thought you two were good friends. What happened between you guys?
Ethan: Nothing.
Kathy: You keep saying it's nothing, but I know it's something.
Ethan: Trust me, it's nothing. But why has your stomach been acting crazy lately?
Kathy looks at him in nervousness.
Kathy: I don't know. But it can't be anything serious.
Ethan looks at her in concern.
INT-BOWMAN'S HOUSE-KITCHEN-MORNING
The refrigerator closes as GRACE, sporting a long white sweater, black mini skirt, and black high heel boots, holds the phone to her ear.
Grace: Grant?
The phone goes to voicemail.
Grace rolls her eyes and hangs up, placing her phone on the counter.
Tom walks in and towards the refrigerator as she looks at him in wonder.
Grace: Hey Tom. Where's Tammy?
Tom: S-she's still a-sleep.
Grace: Well, I'm going to school.
Tom brightly smiles at her.
Tom: Tammy w-will be very h-happy.
Grace rolls her eyes at him and walks out of the kitchen.
INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-MORNING
Students begin to flood the hallways again as Grace walks down the hallway with a smile. She turns a corner and bumps into GRANT, who's wearing a beige sweater with blue jeans, and brown sneakers.
Grace: I'm sorry.
Grant's shocked face becomes one of anger.
Grant: You should be.
Grace looks at Grant in bewilderment.
Grace: Um, whoa. What's wrong?
Grant: What do you think?
Grace: Grant…I'm sorry-
Grant: Whatever. I have a class to get to.
He walks away with a scowl on his face, leaving Grace watching him in shock.
INT-JEURGEN'S HOUSE-KITCHEN-MORNING
AMY, wearing a long black skirt with black flats, has her phone to her ear.
Amy: Who is she?
INT-RICKY'S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM-MORNING
RICKY, wearing a black shirt, black jeans, and black sneakers, is talking to Amy on the phone.
Ricky: Who?
Amy: The girl that went with you and John for ice cream. John told me you let her babysit him too.
Ricky sighs in stress.
Ricky: Yes, Amy. I needed to study and I didn't want to bother you. She offered to babysit and I allowed her to.
Amy: Ricky…I don't even know her.
Ricky: But I do, Amy. I trust her and they had a lot of fun.
Amy: I want to meet her.
Ricky: What?
Amy: You heard me. I want to meet her.
Ricky: I don't think you should-
Amy: Why not?
Ricky: Because I don't want you to.
Amy: Ricky…I want to meet her. And one way or another, I am.
Ricky sighs in frustration.
Ricky: Fine. I'll see if she wants to meet you.
Amy: Okay.
She hangs up the phone.
INT-COLLEGE CAMPUS-COFFEE SHOP-AFTERNOON
Ricky sits at a table with nervousness on his face as CLEMENTINE, wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, and black flats, sat in front of him.
Ricky: Amy wants to meet you.
Clementine: Really?
Ricky nods his head.
Clementine: Well, okay. I would like to meet her too.
Ricky: Yeah, but the reason she wants to meet you is because she doesn't trust you around John.
Clementine slowly nods her head.
Clementine: I can understand, Ricky. I've…been in the same situation.
Ricky looks at her in wonder and confusion.
Ricky: What do you mean?
Clementine: I…have a child also…a girl.
Ricky looks at her in shock.
Clementine (Cont'd): But I don't have custody of her.
Ricky: Why not?
Clementine: I ran away from my motherly responsibilities and the father didn't like that. So he took me to court for custody and he won.
Ricky looks at her in sympathy.
Clementine (Cont'd): Now…I only see her once a week. And at first, I didn't like that her father had another woman around her. But, I had to get used to it.
Ricky: Clementine…I'm sorry.
Clementine: It's okay. I'm thinking of maybe trying to get custody of her again in a few years when I have a house and a good job.
Ricky nods his head.
Clementine: I'm the perfect example of why teens shouldn't have sex.
Ricky: I know how you feel.
She nods her head at him.
INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-NOON
Ethan walks down the hallway when a girl with shoulder length blonde hair steps in front of him with a smile. She's wearing a short red dress with red heels.
Girl: Hey.
He smiles back at her.
Ethan: Uh...hey.
Girl: I'm Layla.
Ethan: Oh...I like that name.
Layla looks at him seductively.
Layla: Well, if you like my name, maybe you should start saying it more.
The two of them smile at each other.
INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-NOON
Amy closes her locker and turns to see Kathy smiling at her next to her.
Kathy: Hi.
Amy: Hi Kathy. How's the…you know what…situation?
Kathy: I…haven't told my grandmother yet.
Amy looks at her in disbelief.
Amy: What? Kathy, by now, you probably can't have an abortion.
Kathy looks back at her in worry and disbelief.
Kathy: What? How long do I probably have now?
Amy: Not too long. It's been almost a month. And here in California, you have 8 weeks after getting pregnant to have an abortion. How long were you-?
Kathy: It happened a few days before I left Texas.
Amy: Then you probably have two or three more weeks left.
Kathy looks at Amy in worry. Kathy leans against a locker in sadness.
Kathy: I didn't know this would happen to me so young. I thought I was smart enough not to let this happen to me.
Amy: I did too. But…things happen and mistakes are made. Have you made any other friends besides Ethan?
Kathy: Yeah. I'm friends with these girls Helen and Jessica.
She turns around to see them talking down the hallway and points to them.
Kathy: That's them.
Amy looks at them in wonder and surprise.
Amy: They kind of remind me of my two friends Lauren and Madison. But, I've got to run. And tell your grandmother quickly, Kathy.
She begins walking away when Kathy stops her.
Kathy: Wait. I need your help with something else.
Amy turns around and smiles, walking back to Kathy.
Amy: Sure. What is it?
Kathy: Something happened between Ethan and Ben. They're not talking to each other anymore and they're ignoring each other. And Ethan won't tell me anything.
Amy: So…
Kathy: Can you maybe talk to Ben to find out what really happened?
Amy looks at her in anxiety.
Amy: I don't know, Kathy. Ben's a little stubborn.
Kathy: Please? Ben…is a nice guy and I think Ethan needs a guy like that as a friend, besides his other friend Brian.
Amy looks at her in wonder.
Amy: What are you gonna do?
Kathy: Okay. Since those two probably are going to budge, then I'm going to try to get them to be friends again, myself.
Amy: Well, I guess I'll help too. Ben's my friend and Ethan's practically my friend so yeah.
Amy and Kathy smile at each other.
INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-NOON
Ben walks down the hallway only to see Ethan walking his way. Both of them stop and look at other in anxiety and awkwardness. Amy walks up to Ben as Kathy walks up to Ethan.
Amy: Hey Ben. I need to talk to you.
Ben: Uh, sure.
Amy walks away with Ben walking behind her in wonder.
Kathy: We need to talk.
Ethan: Um, yeah. About what?
Amy and Ben walk up to them, causing Ethan to turn around in surprise.
Ethan: Uh, hey.
Ben: Hey.
Amy: Hi.
Kathy: Look, you two. Whatever happened between the two of you just let it go. You're friends; you shouldn't let anything come between you guys.
Amy: Ben, what happened?
Ethan shakes his head at Ben.
Ethan: Okay. Nothing major, alright? It was just a misunderstanding and dude, I'm sorry.
Ben looks at Ethan in confusion.
Ben: Uh…yeah. Sure, it was just a misunderstanding. And I accept your apology, Ethan.
Ben extends his hand towards Ethan's and they shake hands.
Ben: As long as you don't try to seduce me into having oral sex with you again.
Kathy and Amy look at them in shock. Kathy turns to Ethan in anger.
Kathy: Ethan…what is Ben talking about?
Ethan: Uh…
Ben looks at them in shock.
Ben: I'm guessing he didn't tell you.
Kathy shakes her head and walks away in anger, followed by Amy looking at the two in disgust and walking away as well.
INT-GRANT HIGH-HALLWAY-AFTERNOON
Ethan walks up to a boy with shoulder length black hair sporting a blue sweater, blue jeans, and black sneakers.
Ethan: Hey Brian.
Brian turns around in surprise and gives a slight smile to Ethan.
Brian: Hey Ethan. What's going on, man?
Ethan: Kathy is what's going on.
Brian: Wait. Does she even know we're friends?
Ethan looks at him in disbelief.
Ethan: That's not what I want to talk about…and I don't know. Besides, she's not even talking to me.
Brian: Really? Why?
Ethan: You wouldn't understand.
Brian: Dude, I'm sure I will.
Ethan: I wanted oral sex from someone.
Brian: Oh…well, from whom?
Ethan looks at him in hesitation.
Ethan: Uh…Ben Boykewich.
Brian looks at Ethan in shock.
Brian: Oh…I mean don't get me wrong, I know you're bisexual, but…a senior?
Ethan smirks at him.
Ethan: What can I say? I aim really high.
Brian: Well, did it work?
Ethan: No. He's straight.
Brian: Oh. Well, what's that got to do with Kathy?
Ethan: She's mad at me for it.
Brian: Oh...well, I'm sorry, dude. And I guess this is a bad time to ask.
Ethan looks at him in wonder.
Ethan: Ask what?
Brian: Well, I kind of like Kathy. And I was hoping you could see if she would be willing to go out with me. But I guess not now.
Ethan: You two are friends, right? Why don't you just ask her yourself?
Brian: I'm terrified. I don't think I have the guts.
Ethan: Well, I don't know. Just try dropping hints that you like her when you're talking to her.
Ethan notices Kathy, Jessica, and Helen walking down the hallway.
Ethan: Now's your chance.
Brian turns to see them about to walk past them. Kathy looks at them in anxiety. Brian quickly steps in front of her with a smile. All three girls stop and Kathy smiles back at Brian.
Brian: Uh…Kathy? I know this is sudden…but…I was wondering if you'd like to…um, go out sometime.
Kathy looks at him in shock, but quickly smiles at him again.
Kathy: Yeah. I would like that. Get my number from Ethan.
She walks away, followed by Helen and Jessica. She quickly looks at Ethan but continues to walk down the hallway.
Layla watches Ethan and Brian talk. Her brunette haired friend next to her, CASEY, closes her locker and notices Layla looking away. She turns to see Kathy walking down the hallway and looks back to see Ethan and Brian watching Kathy, Helen, and Jessica walking away.
Casey: Layla…when are you going to get it? Ethan's basically taken.
Layla: Uh…he's not taken.
Casey: Then why did he just hug Kathy?
Layla: You know her?
Casey: Yeah. I have biology with her and Ethan.
Layla: Well to me, she's just some chick who's probably trying to take Ethan away from me.
Casey: I doubt that. You're not with Ethan.
Layla: Oh really? I talked to Ethan and gave him my number this morning. He's going to talk to me tonight.
Casey looks at Layla in shock.
INT-RICKY'S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM-NIGHT
Ricky and Clementine are sat on the couch smiling as they watch John play with his toys. A knock goes on the door and they look up at in wonder.
Ricky stands up and walks to the door. He opens it to see Amy smiling at him. He looks at her in surprise.
INT-KATHY'S HOUSE-KATHY'S BEDROOM-NIGHT
Kathy has her phone to her ear.
Kathy: Um…so, you like me, huh?
INT-BRIAN'S HOUSE-BRIAN'S BEDROOM-NIGHT
Brian: Yeah. I like you a lot. I just thought you and Ethan liked each other so I didn't bother on telling you.
Kathy has a look of wonder on her face but quickly changes to a smile.
Kathy: No. Ethan and I are just friends. Well, now, we're not even that.
Brian: If you don't mind me asking, why are you angry with Ethan about what he did with Ben Boykewich?
Kathy: Well, because…I don't think Ethan should just throw himself at anyone. I believe he's better than that.
Brian: You're not the only one. He's probably on the phone with Layla.
Kathy has a look of concern and wonder.
Kathy: Layla? Isn't that the girl a lot of guys chase after at school?
Brian: Yeah.
Kathy: I hope Ethan doesn't do anything he'd regret.
Brian: Me neither.
Kathy: So…where are we going for our date?
Brian has a smile on his face.
Brian: I was thinking Geoff's.
Kathy: I've never been there, but sure. It sounds great.
Brian: Oh it is.
Kathy has a smile on her face as does Brian.
INT- RICKY'S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM- NIGHT
Ricky watches as Amy and Clementine look at each other.
Clementine: So…Amy, how's school?
Amy: It's good. How's college?
Clementine: It's good. You know, besides the occasional jerks that approach me on a daily basis.
Amy: Hmm.
Ricky looks at them awkwardly.
Ricky: So, are you two hungry?
Amy: Yeah.
Clementine: Yeah.
Ricky: Okay. Well, I guess I'll go grab some steaks from downstairs.
He opens the door and walks out as Amy and Clementine sit down on the sofa.
Amy: So…Clementine…how do you and Ricky know each other?
Clementine: Well, we were in the same foster home when we were little. But I had got adopted and I never saw him again until recently that is.
Amy: Oh…
Clementine: How did you and Ricky meet?
Amy: We met at band camp.
Clementine: Oh, that's right. Didn't you and Ricky have sex for the first time there?
Amy slightly smirks at her.
Amy: Yep, we did.
Clementine: And then you were pregnant and had John?
Amy: Yeah. Um…I don't really feel comfortable talking about this with you.
Clementine smirks at her.
Clementine: Why? We're both young, single, and…have a child.
Amy looks at her in shock.
Clementine: Yeah, I have a child too…a daughter. But I can't see her.
Amy looks at Clementine in concern and wonder.
Amy: Why not?
Clementine sighs in regret.
Clementine: Well, a few years after I had my daughter, I ran away for a while. I left her with the father and didn't come back until a few weeks later. I returned…only to get a court order. The father wanted custody of our daughter and didn't think I was responsible enough to take care of her.
Amy looks at Clementine in sympathy.
Clementine (Cont'd): He won the case. And now, I can only see my daughter once a week.
Amy: Clementine…I'm so sorry.
Clementine: Don't be. It was my fault. I should've been more responsible.
Amy: Well, are you ever planning on trying to get custody of your daughter again?
Clementine: Yeah, maybe in a few years when I have my own house and a high paying job.
Amy sighs.
Clementine: I didn't plan on getting pregnant while I was a teenager.
Amy: Me neither.
Clementine: Only you still have a wonderful life. You're able to be with John whenever you can. I can't do that.
Amy looks at her in regret.
Amy: I almost didn't.
Clementine: I know. Ricky told me. Just be happy, Amy. Be glad you can see John whenever you want.
Amy slowly nods her head.
INT-KATHY'S HOUSE-KITCHEN-NIGHT
Kathy walks in to see Marlene hanging up the phone. She smiles at her and sits down at the table.
Kathy: Who was that?
Marlene sighs in tiredness.
Marlene: It was your father.
Kathy looks at her in shock.
Marlene: He and your mother want to come see you.
Kathy: But I've only been here for a few weeks.
Marlene: I know. They're probably just a little worried having you far away from them. So, how's you and Ethan?
Kathy smiles at her.
Kathy: Ethan and I know about you and Ethan's mother. We know you two were trying to get us together.
Marlene looks at her in surprise.
Marlene: No, we did not.
Kathy: Yes.
Marlene sighs and smirks at her.
Marlene: Yeah. At least we tried.
Kathy: Ethan and I are just friends. Well…we were.
Marlene looks at Kathy in concern and worry.
Marlene: You two aren't friends anymore? What happened?
Kathy: It's…complicated.
Marlene: Kathy…I noticed that you vomited the other day. What's wrong?
Kathy: Nothing. My stomach's just acting crazy.
Marlene: Do you need to take something for that?
Kathy: No, I'm alright. Thanks.
Marlene: Okay. Well, I'm going to bed.
She smiles at Kathy and walks out of the room, leaving Kathy with a face full of worry.
INT-RICKY'S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM-NIGHT
Amy and Ricky stand in front of each other.
Amy: Listen Ricky…I'm sorry about showing up here unexpected. I know you didn't expect me to come tonight. I should've called, but...Clementine is alright to me.
Ricky: Amy…you did that because you cared about John's well-being. I understand that, but next time…can you trust me when I say I trust someone?
Amy: Yeah.
Ricky smiles as he looks down at Amy's growing belly.
Ricky: You're growing.
Amy smiles at him and rubs her belly.
Amy: I know. I can't believe I'm getting this big early on.
Ricky: I think you were when John was in the womb.
Amy: I was, wasn't I?
She smiles at him as he smiles back.
Ricky steps up to Amy and hugs her. She smiles as she hugs him back. They slowly release each other and step back from each other.
Ricky: I'm happy for you, Amy. I really am.
Amy: Thanks. And I'm happy for you too. You seem to be good living by yourself.
Ricky: I am.
They smile at each other.
