AUTHOR'S NOTE
Oh my, it's been lonnnnnnnnng while since I've been there.
Okay, I know you must be tired to hear me say it all the time, but... I am sincerely sorry for not updating since a very long while. Life is getting worse and worse for me, and with the exams coming, all I do is go to school, study and sleep. Repeatedly. I barely have time to come online, and when I do, it's not for long so I don't have any inspiration to write. And, you know what? I did start writing this chapter a long while ago. But the site deleted my file because I haven't been there for too long. Ugh. I have to rewrite it all. Anyway, I'm sorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorrysorry.
I'm now going to write shorter chapters, so I can update more regularly. I hope you'll stick with me, I really do.
Enjoy this chapter, and hopefully another one will come soon.
Scott walked into the school hall, feeling drained of his energy. He had a sleepless night, thinking about doppelgängers, vampires, hybrids... and the possibility that Elena Gilbert, sweet new student of his school, and, obviously, new best friend of his crush, and new crush of his best friend, was a new threat for him, and well, future victim of Derek.
The young werewolf was torn between making Elena a victim of the situation, or making her a real threat that needed to be suppressed. So many questions were spinning in his mind. Should Stiles know about Elena? Should he keep it secret from Stiles? Should he let Derek kill Elena? Should he protect her?
Why did it have to be so complicated?
Unconsciously, Scott walked to his best friend's locker. As he was about to greet him, he noticed the gloomy look plastered on Stiles' face.
"Hey, bro. Are you alright?"
No answer.
Stiles kept filling his locker with his school books, like a robot. When he closed his locker, he put his forehead against its cold metal door.
"She thinks I'm a freak, or obsessed... I messed up everything."
"What? What are you talking about?" Scott asked, completely confused.
"Yesterday evening, I studied with Elena at my house." Stiles paused, looking up at his friend, who was obviously wearing a bright smile on his face.
"So? That's great!" He said, patting his friend's shoulder.
"Not really... I think she was about to stay longer, but then, all my research about the werewolf curse fell on the floor... And she wanted to help me pick them up..." He stopped again.
"And? Tell me!" Scott was impatient.
"And she saw what it was about. She started freaking out, like... I don't know, man. She was really mad after that. Then, she left and she didn't even let me drive her home. It was like she took it all personally..."
"I'll see you later." Scott cut off his friend, then left, walking fast through the crowd.
Scott and Elena had to have a little talk.
I shouldn't have come... I shouldn't have come...
Elena had to behave like a shadow today. She didn't want to cross anyone's path today. Stiles' path, actually... She almost saw him twice already, and all she did was just turn the other way round. She knew she couldn't do that all day long, but it was a better alternative than facing him and say "Hi, is the research on the worst part of my life going well today?"
No, she couldn't handle that. She left Mystic Falls to lead a simple life without any supernatural things... And there she was, in a town where a guy she really appreciates does research on that voluntarily. Great. Really, that's awesome.
When she arrived at her locker, she fumbled in her bag to find the keys. After letting out a slight growl, she finally heard them fall on the floor. As she was about to bend down to pick them, someone did it for her...
Scott. The second person in Elena's 'I don't want to see you today' list.
"Oh, hey Scott." She faked a smile. "Thanks for the keys, I'm so clumsy." She laughed a bit and extended her arm towards the keys that were dangling off of Scott's fingers.
But instead, he pocketed the keys.
"We need to talk." He just let out bluntly.
"Sorry, but I don't want to be late for the first class of the day. Please, give me my keys." Elena replied in a less happy tone.
"It's important."
"Well, French class is important as well, so..."
She didn't have time to finish her sentence as she felt a hand grab her arm tightly. She was about to yell at Scott for being so rough with her, but something stopped her instantly.
When she looked into Scott's eyes, the deep brown colour was gone, replaced by a bright amber colour. Elena's heart was racing, and she knew he felt it too, because it seemed like his grip felt less tight on her arm.
"Now." He said through his gritted teeth.
"Go to the old Science lab. I'll be there in 5 minutes." Elena snapped, yanking her arm out of his iron grip.
At least, she's punctual... Scott thought when, 5 minutes later, Elena joined him in the science lab.
"So, what's wrong with you?" Elena finally broke the heavy silence. "People could have seen you."
"Do you know what I am?" Scott ignored the brunette's remark.
"You're a werewolf."
"How do you know that?"
"I watch movies and read books." Elena lied, without any difficulty.
"I don't believe you." Scott shook his head.
"Want me to prove it? There's Twilight, Supernatural,..."
"I know what you are." Scott cut her off.
Elena stopped talking, glaring at the werewolf standing in front of her. No, he couldn't know. He's bluffing. He's just bluffing, she told herself.
"Oh shit, you discovered I'm Catwoman! I thought I was being discreet..." Elena just answered, in a sarcastic yet cold voice.
"You think you're funny, right?"
"I think I'm adorable."
"Cut the crap." The werewolf raised his voice, then lowered it, trying to calm down. "I know you're the Doppelgänger, and that you're a threat to me."
Suddenly, Elena's amused expression fell, replaced by two widened eyes.
"How do you know? Who told you?" Elena stepped closer to Scott, eager to discover who could know about her.
"Derek."
"How does he know? Tell me everything!" She almost yelled.
"Calm down." He put both hands on his shoulders, feeling the anger emanating from her body.
"Calm down? You want me to calm down?" She pushed his hands off her shoulders. "I came here to be safe and away from all these things..." Her voice trailed off. "What am I going to do...?"" She whispered to herself, her eyes becoming more and more wet.
Seeing the brunette break down on front of him, Scott's anger lowered a little bit.
"Only Derek and I know." He said, trying to reassure her.
"That's already too much."
Silence. None of them knew what to say anymore.
"I like you, Elena. I really do." Scott spoke up, his voice calm this time. "But we can't be friends anymore."
Elena looked up at the werewolf, surprised by his speech.
"What do you mean?"
"If the Hybrid comes to Beacon Hills, this would be the end of the werewolf race." Scott answered, repeating the exact same words as Derek said yesterday.
"It's not like I would let him use me! Scott, don't you think I've already been through this? I survived him, I can do it twice." Elena defended herself.
"We never know..."
Scott sighed slightly as the school bell rang, which meant they had to go to class. Picking up his bag, he looked at Elena with a sorry look.
"We never know what can happen." He finished.
"Scott..." Elena tried to argue a little more.
"You can stay with Allison, Lydia and even Stiles if you want. But don't stay around me." The werewolf cut the discussion, and pulled Elena's keys out of his pocket, setting them on a table, then left the room, without any more words.
Picking up her bag as well as her keys, all colours were drained out of Elena's face. She never expected someone to discover her secret, and more surprising, she never expected someone to fear her like that. She was left alone, with her secret weighing on her shoulders more than before, enemies with the only person who could understand the burden a secret like that could be.
Elena left the room on her way to her class, unaware that someone was watching her from the corner of the corridor.
"Damn it." She cursed in a low voice.
Allison was late for classes this morning, because she forgot to set her alarm the night before. It happened a lot to her, but today wasn't the right day for this mistake, because she had a math exam. At least Elena wasn't late. Surprisingly enough, her friend left before she even woke up, leaving a note saying that she had to go earlier because she had to borrow some books at the school library for her science pair work with Stiles.
As she arrived at a corridor corner, she saw someone walk out of one of the old science labs. Scott.
What was he doing there? Shouldn't he be in class at this time?
Shrugging this thought out of her mind, she kept walking, until... she heard someone walk out after him. Stepping back quickly, she hid at the corner she previously stopped, wondering why exactly she had to hide.
When she saw the person walking out after Scott, Allison's heart stopped for a second. Elena.
Why were Scott and Elena alone in an old classroom? Why did they both looked wary? Why did Elena lie to her about the reason she left earlier?
Leaning against the wall faintly, Allison's face was really pale. What was happening between her best friend, and her almost boyfriend?
Feeling betrayed, the girl shook her head and walked down the corridor. This wasn't going to be over.
