Didn't get much feedback on the last chapter, but I wanted to get this up in case we lose the net neutrality fight.
About an hour and a half later Aubrey could hear a car come to screeching halt outside her house and she made it to the door before Beca could fish out her copy of Aubrey's house keys.
"How many laws did you break driving here?"
"Give or take about 5. Now, where is she and what exactly am I walking into." Aubrey explained what had happened that afternoon and how she came to find out about the issue with Johanna. Beca's face paled as Aubrey talked and she paced Aubrey's living room in an effort to self soothe.
"We just thought it was normal teenager stuff with her mood being off these last few months. I mean, Jesus Christ Aubrey, I'm her mother and I didn't see she was struggling with something this dangerous."
"Beca you can't beat yourself up over this. We all missed it. She spends time here and with Chloe and we all missed it. It's no one's fault. I knew a girl in law school who used to do it to relieve stress and cope with depression and anxiety so I know a very little amount about it, but what I know is that she hid it very well until she wanted someone to know. Johanna is smart and she knew how to hide this. The important thing is that we know now." Beca leaned her forehead against the wall and tried to calm down.
"What do I do Aubrey? Does she need to go to the hospital? Am I dealing with a suicidal teenager? How do I find a therapist for her? What do I tell my wife?" Aubrey put her hands on Beca's shoulders to stop her from ranting and to try and calm her down.
"First, you are going to take a breath. If you go up there all upset, she will think you are mad at her when I know you are just scared shitless, but she won't know the difference." Beca knew Aubrey was right and she tried to steady her breathing.
"And to be honest Beca I don't know what we do next, except I know she needs to see you and be reminded that she is loved and this doesn't change that." Beca nodded.
"Where is she?"
"Upstairs. Chloe is in my bedroom with her."
"And my two other rugrats, where are they?"
"James took them all for a movie and dinner. They will come back when I text James the all clear. Aubrey knew something was up, but he went with them."
"That couldn't have been easy, getting him to leave if he thought his sister was in trouble. Nice work."
"I am his namesake after all, I know what he needed to hear in order to feel secure leaving Johanna with us. Speaking of whom, think you are calm enough to go upstairs and try and sort this out?" Beca took a deep breath and nodded, following Aubrey up the stairs and down the hall to the master bedroom. Once there she saw Chloe laying on the bed with Johanna snuggled into her side. The redhead caught site of the DJ and she gently pushed on Johanna's arm.
"Jojo, your mama is here." The teenager slowly sat up and held her legs to her chest, allowing Chloe to stand up and go to Beca. Beca sort of fell into her friend's arms and Chloe didn't mind being the strong one in the room this time.
"Thank you for coming over to be with her."
"She's my goddaughter and you are basically my sister, where else would I have gone. She needed me, you needed me, so I came. Anyone else would've done the same." Beca held Chloe closer and tried not to cry.
"But it wasn't anyone else, it was you. She called for you and you came running. I owe you big time." Chloe pulled away and brushed tears away from her face while still hold Beca's hand with her free hand.
"A long time ago you dropped everything and came running to my mother's death bed and you held her when she left this world. I've waited our whole adult lives to find a way to repay that kind of love. If you insist on keeping score, today I think we're even: you don't owe me anything." Beca nodded that she understood and Chloe let her go and she and Aubrey watched as Beca neared the bed and took a seat where Chloe had just left.
"Hey kiddo, you feeling any better?" Johanna eyed her mother. She saw the tears and she felt guilty for putting them there.
"I'm fine, really." Beca crawled toward the headboard and wrapped her arms around Johanna, not letting her turn away.
"Honey, if you were fine, we wouldn't be here. It's ok to not be ok and its ok to need some help. Everyone needs help at some point."
"Does everyone need this kind of help?" Johanna held out the bandaged arm to her mother and Beca felt her heart drop into her stomach when faced with the reality of their situation.
"No baby, but a lot of people struggle with this and we'll figure out a way to get you help. My and mom, your aunts, we're all gonna figure out what needs to be done to help you and get you to a better place, ok? You aren't in this alone."
"You aren't mad?"
"Oh baby, no, not mad. Worried and wondering how I didn't see it sooner, but not mad and never at you, not about this." Chloe stayed with Beca while Aubrey went to go make some calls to try and get them some numbers of therapists so Beca and Luisa would have a starting point. When she returned she waved Beca over to her and Beca urged her daughter to go get her things packed up if she was feeling safe enough to leave and go home. The teenager left the room with Chloe trailing her, leaving Aubrey with Beca. Aubrey handed Beca a list with two numbers on it.
"That friend I had in law school is someone I still talk to and sometimes work with. I called her and asked for some advice. That is the therapist she worked with back then and the other doctor is good as well, just depends on if Johanna prefers a male or female therapist. You can search for people online if you'd like, but at least you have a place to start." Beca took the paper and engulfed Aubrey in a tight hug before the blonde could finish talking.
"Thank you. I'm sorry this all happened on a day when you had all the kids, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate you being there for her and keeping her calm and safe."
"I love her like my own Beca, so does Chloe. We weren't about to let her do this alone and we won't let you do it either. You and Louisa obviously call the shots, but we're here and we aren't gonna run away from this, her or you." Beca let go of Aubrey and smiled. A sad smile, but a smile all the same.
"I love you awesome nerd." Aubrey smiled and laughed for the first time in hours.
"Should I call James and have him bring the kids home?" Beca nodded and it turned out that James was just wasting time doing nothing with the kids after they had eaten and was waiting for his wife to call and say they could return home. Beca sat downstairs with Johanna next to her and Chloe and Aubrey in the kitchen. The door to the house flew open and it was no surprise that Aubrey and Kristina were the first two through the door, quickly launching themselves into their mother to get hugs.
"Aunt Aubrey said you were gonna be working late." Beca nodded at her daughter's comment.
"She did, but I decided to come home early to be with my three favorite children." Beca winked and her two younger laughed and even Johanna smiled slightly.
"Go grab your stuff so we can go home." Her kids took off and Beca quickly pulled her wallet out and tried to hand James money to cover the cost of her kid's movie tickets and dinner. He kindly pushed the cash away and Beca insisted. Finally, Aubrey stepped in.
"Beca, we aren't taking your money so you can stop trying to push it into his hand."
"Dude, you paid money to keep my kids occupied while we dealt with an emergency, please let me pay you something." Aubrey pushed the cash back to Beca so that it hit her chest. "Well, this family emergency is our treat ok?" Beca sighed and put her money away, hugging James and thanking him for his help.
Beca turned to her eldest daughter and held out her hand. "Ready to go home love?" Johanna simply nodded and took her mother's hand, waited for her siblings to gather in the living room before they headed home as a family to try and begin to deal with the event of the day.
