Chapter 6: Questions and Answers
"What the hell were you playing at?" Sisko snapped and Harry flinched at the sharpness in his voice. Harry, Odo and the Lykotians had all been transported to Security and now Harry was about to suffer a severe lecture… or possibly remain stuck in the brig like the Lykotians down at the end of the room, hopefully he could avoid that though. He couldn't really get much training done in a small box of a cell.
"I was doing what needed to be done!" Harry snapped back, sure Sisko had aright to be annoyed with what Harry had done, acting without his knowledge, heck Harry would be pissed too if people starting blowing up stuff if he was overseeing everything. "They were trying to steal a runabout… whatever the hell one of those is." Harry added and Sisko frowned. "Innocent people do not run away!" Harry continued and Sisko had to bite back a sharp laugh.
"They do when they're being followed by an unknown." Sisko responded and Harry shrugged it off.
"It was either keep an eye on what was going on or sit doing nothing, no doubt your research into me has already proven that I can't sit back and do nothing when there are problems starting." Harry retorted and Sisko nodded ever so slightly.
"What we have found does show that." Sisko admitted although from the sounds of it he didn't like to admit it. "We're still investigating what you've told us but a lot of the files were secured and have a top level security clearance requirement to open." Sisko explained and Harry frowned. Was that something that his future self had done? Or was it something that Captain Archer had done. He mentally shrugged, dismissing that train of thought before he got stuck in a mental loop. "But that's not the point, you threw yourself into a dangerous situation and could have been killed!" Sisko snapped and Harry frowned a sense of déjà vu starting to settle in.
"I did what I needed to do," Harry responded. "I've said this to Archer, I've said this to others from where I was originally from, if through inaction I'll cause problems I wont stand idly by." Harry said and gave Sisko a stern look that showed he wasn't going to back down on this situation. "Would you have done anything different?" Harry asked with a raised eyebrow.
Sisko watched him, hands cupped in front of him as he studied Harry. He hated to admit that he was very impressed by Harry's counter, knowing full well that he would have done the same thing. "For now I won't be leaving you locked in this cell until we find a way to send you back to where you belong." Sisko commented and Harry let out a breath that he didn't know that he had been holding. It wouldn't be fun to sit in a cell for all the time he was in this time period.
"So what do you want me to do? At the moment I'm kind of standing around twiddling my thumbs, which you may or may not remember the saying: idle hands are the devils play things." Harry continued with a smile as Sisko deactivated the Forcefield.
"Don't make me regret letting you out of here." Sisko warned and Harry wasn't sure whether or not he was joking, not wanting to end up back in the Brig he nodded his head slowly. "Follow me." Sisko said and Harry followed him as they found themselves walking back through the silent Promenade, the gentle hum of the machinery and lights and everything else unnerving Harry and to be honest, Sisko as well. Both knew, Harry through understanding the area he was in and Sisko from actually living it that the area should have people in it, that hum should just be background noise and yet here it was as the most prominent noise in the area. The two walked into the Turbolift and Sisko spoke up. "Ops." He called and Harry glanced at the Captain in confusion.
"Ops? I thought I wasn't going to be allowed in there." Harry commented in surprise and Sisko nodded his head in agreement.
"Originally you weren't, but seeing as how you are going to involve yourself regardless of what any of us say I think it would be better to put your unique talents to use." Sisko commented and Harry still found himself frowning. He had been hoping to keep his magic quiet for at least a little bit longer since from the lack of comments that had been made he had worked out that not only did they not know about him but they also didn't know about his magic.
'I guess my stunt with the Lykotians has pushed things forwards a little bit.' Harry mused, it wasn't his intention for this to happen the way it had, but he had been curious about the Operations Centre of the station and now he was getting to go in. The turbolift stopped and opened up into the command centre. He stood on a raised area, infront of him a lowered location with several large tables with computers built into them, at the side of the room he saw what he could only assume to be the captains office up a couple of stairs, the main operation centre was empty and as they walked to the office Harry understood why.
In the office stood the people that he had met earlier, Security Chief Odo, Commander Dax and another in a red uniform that he didn't recognise. Sisko walked in first and Harry followed afterwards, surprised looks crossing the face of the other three as he entered. "Afternoon all… or is it evening? I'm kind of not used to the time here." Harry said weakly with a wave to cover up his nervousness at being the focus of attention. New place, new people that he didn't yet know if he could trust and he was under heavy scrutiny by them. Dax smiled at the comment amused by his apparent unease either that or she did find his comment genuinely amusing. The woman in red looked at him with a look of suspicion and curiosity, he hadn't met her yet so didn't know what to make of the look, but he could tell from the way she held herself that she was ready to strike if he so much as made a wrong move.
Last of the three was Odo, well he had already met the changeling and had been on the receiving end of his super cheerful attitude. "Take a seat Mr Potter." Sisko ordered as he walked in with Harry. "Right, we have a situation on our hands." Sisko spoke and Harry sat down in one of the seats.
"Captain?" The woman in red spoke up in confusion shooting another furious glance at Harry.
"It's fine Major, I have no doubt that Mr Potter here will get involved regardless of what happens." He said shooting a pointed look at Harry who at least had the decency to look guilty. "So, rather than him getting in over his head, I believe we should keep him involved, especially after that unique display he put on in the Cargo Bay." Sisko said and Harry nodded his head again remaining silent just to see where Sisko was going with this.
"Yes, what was that?" the Major questioned changing her focus back to Harry.
"Would you believe me if I said Magic?" Harry asked and the snort of disbelief was all the answer that he needed. "You sound unconvinced but it's true." Harry continued with a smile "I had the same suspicion when the people of the Enterprise found out about my abilities too… although that was during the time the Klingons were attacking."
"That's what you were hiding from me when we spoke." Dax said a tone of triumph in her voice as he spoke.
"That's correct, I was hoping to keep it quiet for at least a little bit longer, but things happen, or I should say in that situation Lykotians happen." Harry continued.
"What tipped you off to them?" Dax questioned and Harry glanced at Odo.
"Independent investigation, though I have a feeling Odo doesn't like me for doing this, I overheard a conversation between Quark and the Lykotians in the bar, of course I didn't have a universal translator so I didn't have anything to understand what they were talking about." Harry continued pausing a moment to take a breath. "But the Lykotians were panicked by something, the conversation was quick, I spoke to Odo who told me he already knew about them and was worried I'd tip them off that they were being watched… he was quite dismissive of me." Harry chided jokingly to which Odo just humphed. "Yeah that could have gone better I think…" He continued, "either way I just kept an eye on them, they seemed perfectly fine to sit in the replomat until they just left, quite quickly at that. I followed them, they went into the Cargo Bay and I followed after, I gave them a few moments head start and as I entered the cargo bay I saw one of them messing around with one of the panels on the wall and then the other pounced. The rest you already know." Harry summarised what had happened.
"And that was when you used your 'magic' to deal with them?" Kira questioned still sounding dubious.
"I can demonstrate some now for you if you want?" Harry offered and at the nod he stood up stepping over to the replicator at the side of the room. "I'm just going to do something small to demonstrate." Harry said as he had the Replicator make a baseball. "Never really got into baseball, only reason I choose one now is because I saw the one on your desk." Harry commented gesturing to the one that Sisko had resting in a position on his desk. He placed the ball down on the floor and drew his wand. "Now, what to do…" He hummed idly for a moment before making a gesture and muttering a couple of words. The ball moved slightly and then started to change shape and colour until it turned into a tennis ball. The group looked at it in amazement before Dax drew her tricorder, scanning the Tennis Ball.
"It's completely changed, molecular structure, appearance." She stepped over, picking it off the ground, "Texture, this is unprecidented." She spoke in surprise as she continued to examine it before passing it back to Harry still overlooking the results on her tricorder.
"I can go one better." Harry said with a smile, he walked over to the Replicator, making a small box, he placed it on the desk, with a flick of his wand he transfigured it into a bird cage, he placed the ball inside and glancing at the four. "Now, no idea how well it'll work I've been working on the inanimate to animate transfiguration but it's still a bit rusty." Harry said as he made another gesture with his wand, muttering a few more words in latin as the tennis ball changed shape turning into a small yellow canary. "Hey it worked," he said as the bird cheeped in confusion inside the cage. "Last one I did, the half transformed thing exploded… quite messy as you could guess." He continued as Dax continued to scan the Canary. "It's not really alive, the spell will wear off in a while and it'll turn back into a tennis ball… or a baseball, I can't remember which will take priority." Harry spoke as Dax sat down. "Either way, magic, or as I vaguely remember some techno babble that Trip, Phlox and Reed spoke about back on the Enterprise, I'm either playing god with a power that I have no comprehension of or I'm part of a group of humanoids who can manipulate matter on a level beyond recognition. I cant remember everything." Harry said dismissively.
The others were still shocked by what they had seen, a normal human having this kind of capabilities, it was incredible. "What kind of limits do you have?" Dax questioned eventually finding her voice, still amazed by what she had seen with the Canary that continued to watch everyone around the room.
"Magic is interesting like that, there are a few basic rules but a lot of it seems more to be down to imagination. I'm still learning all I can, but I know enough to tidy up the mess I made in the Cargo Bay." He added with an attempt to play peace keeper with Odo. The Changeling in question was hard to read but after a moment he nodded. "I'll need a bit of information on what the things looked like and what they were for but it's still easily fixed, from what I saw it wasn't a lot of electrical equipment so the things shouldn't have been fried."
"Fried?" Sisko questioned slowly.
"Without the proper enchantments and protections, too much high powered magic act like an EMP," Harry started to explain.
"That would be why the cameras were playing up in the Cargo Bay both during your arrival and the fight." Dax summarised and Harry nodded his head.
"Combat Magic, even basic stuff like that has that effect, the way I used it, not actually on the systems mean they should be all fine again by now, just the initial bursts of energy being the thing to disable it." Harry explained calmly then pausing to think. "As to when I arrived I don't know what happened what with being unconscious and all but if I had to hazard a guess, then I would most likely have to say that it was a protective barrier caused by my magic, some philosophers back where I am from believed that magic itself was sentient, mainly from how it can react, it is possible that it does have some form of intelligence with how it reacts but I don't know to be honest, from the sounds of it, it seems to have made a protective barrier around me when I was brought here… that's quite handy…" He muttered trailing off in thought, wondering if there was any way that he could capitalise on that. "So, I'm guessing the Lykotian's aren't awake either yet… well at least not the one I hit with the stunner." Harry said to Odo who nodded. "Right, so I know what I'm going to have to do first, revive him, the stunning spell on non magical people tends to leave them in a sort of coma… the reviving spell which is just as easy to cast will wake them up pretty much straight away, no negative effects." Harry continued giving a quick over view. "Other than that, I'm guessing fix the Cargo Bay, then probably sleep." Harry said with a small grin, the amount of damage he had to fix would drain him.
"Captain, with your permission I'd like to go to the Cargo Bay and run some scans as he does this." Dax spoke up, her thirst for knowledge shining through at the new mystery that stood in front of her. Harry watched her with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
"Surely you should at least ask the lab rat first." Harry said with a small laugh and Dax smiled in return.
"Of course, that's if Harry doesn't mind." She spoke and Sisko after several moments nodded his head.
"I don't mind, Phlox was always trying to run tests on me the moment he found out. Wouldn't listen when I kept warning him that the medical devices weren't properly protected." Harry commented with another amused laugh. "that got a bit painful." He added as an afterthought.
"Well then, it looks like we know what we're doing then." Sisko started. "Major, you'll be continuing the repairs to the Turbolift in the Habitat Ring?" He questioned and she nodded. "Ambassador, I want you to try talking to the Lykotians again, find out what you can about the drones that are circling the station." He continued and Bannik nodded his head "If you need any extra assistance, don't hesitate to ask." Sisko concluded and Bannik again nodded his head. "Odo, question the Lykotians, find out what you can and then have another chat with Quark, I get the gut feeling he knows more than he's letting on." Sisko guessed and Odo let out a small bark of laughter.
"If Quark isn't involved somehow then it must have stopped raining on Ferenginar." Odo commented drawing smiles from the other officers and a confused look from Harry. Dax seeing the look took a moment to explain.
"Ferenginar is the homeplanet of the Ferengi, there is nearly always a constant planet wide torrential rain there." She explained and Harry let out a small 'oh' of acknowledgement.
"Mr Potter, you already know what you are going to be doing." Sisko said pointedly and Harry nodded his head like the rest.
"I'll do the best that I can." Harry said and Sisko gave a small nod, a small smile on his face.
"That's all I ask. Alright everyone, Dismissed." He said with finality and the group made their way out of the Office and back into the main area of Ops.
"I'll meet you down in the Cargo Bay in a few minutes." Dax said turning to look at Harry and Odo. "I just want to take a few moments to modify the tricorder for something like this, going off the readings the ships sensors picked up earlier I should be able to adjust it enough to keep it from short circuiting." She spoke.
"Ok, well I've got to wake up the sleeping beauty in Security before I go there, so I'll hold off on starting until you get there." He agreed as Odo, Harry and Kira entered the Turbolift.
"And when I get there, you're going to tell me the real version of the Klingon attack." Dax called out as she walked down into the lowered area to her workspace. In the turbolift, Harry flinched, realising he had now shown his hand in that fight as well. At was truly out of the bag at this time but at the moment he just didn't care. The smile returned to his face. He didn't have to hide who he was anymore.
At least not all of it anyway.

Next chapter done. So very long overdue simply due to work, illness, work, more work, Christmas, New Years, personal drama, more personal drama… and a large dose of Dynasty Warriors 8… Seriously I've sunk way too much time into that game.
