Chapter 6
Working at a law firm somewhere near Wall Street gave Chloe the privilege of walking to Stacie's hospital, instead of having to endure the notorious New York traffic. So imagine what their faces were like when they saw Beca running into the hospital front door with a bicycle helmet in hand.
"Dude, please tell me you did not get here from Columbus Circle on a bike." The look on Stacie's face screamed nothing but disapproval.
It was mid-winter in New York, and yet Beca was perspiring. "It's lunch hour. There was no way I could get a cab, or get here on time with the subway."
"Beca Mitchell, you two have a baby on the way and your plan is to get yourself killed in New York traffic? Unbelievable." Stacie threw her hands in the air, turned around and started walking away. She did not realise the comment she left had successfully made both Beca and Chloe blush.
And then Stacie caught the two of them not keeping up. "Beca, do you really want to cycle back to work? Because if you two don't hurry up right now, I'm not sure you have any other choice."
The first trimester dating scan went well and everything looked normal. Chloe was relieved.
"Chloe, it all looks good. You can change here; Beca and I will be just outside." Stacie got up from her chair and quietly nudged Beca out of the room.
The moment the sonogram room door closed, Stacie cornered Beca into the nursing station. "Okay, spill. What is it with you and Chloe?"
Beca tried to look innocent. "What are you talking about? There is nothing going on."
But that answer clearly failed to fool anyone. Especially someone who has known them since their college years.
"Yea? Then why didn't you kick her out of the house and asked her to find an apartment herself? Why take her in? Why come with her to the ultrasound?" Stacie fired Beca a bunch of questions, leaving Beca no time to respond; and in truth, Beca would probably respond so poorly the answers could make people cringe. "Stop BS-ing me Beca Mitchell."
Not a lot of people can make Beca speechless; Stacie was one of them. And when Stacie starts talking about Chloe, Beca becomes defenseless.
"Stacie, you know what happened back then." Beca started speaking, softly. "I have a heart to protect - and that is my own."
"Fine, you want to talk about hurt? Let's do this. In fact, I'm just going to leave you with one word - Jesse. Does that ring a bell?" Stacie looked at Beca, hawk-eyed.
Ouch, Stacie Conrad.
"And Beca, throw away that bike already." With that, Stacie walked away, leaving a speechless Beca standing in the hallway.
