Chapter 6: Get Along
The morning started off differently than it usually had for a long time, with silence. Number sat in his corner going over the schematics for his ship while Ruby remained asleep in her bed. Blake was reading her book in bed, Weiss studying in her night gown, and Yang snoring up a storm. Shade would float around the room and give his input on the rebuilding of Number's ship. Number looked up from his work with a smile, enjoying how good everything had become.
After his and Yang's fight, the two had been getting along a thousand times better. Yang, finally ending the snoring, stretched and groaned "Morning everyone." Number was the first to greet Yang with "Good morning." After Yang was done stretching, she flopped back onto her bed and questioned "So what's on the agenda for today?" Blake responded "Nothing is really planned for today."
"How about another round?" Number questioned. "What? Trying to redeem yourself after yesterday's ass kicking?"
"Now you're just asking for it Blondie."
"Come at me Bot."
Number rolled up his schematics and chuckled "It's going down." Yang jumped from her bed and went chest to chest plate with Number, exclaiming "Then let's go! Give me what you got!" Number wrapped an arm around Yang's neck and put her in a headlock. "The Killing Machine has the Blonde Brawler in a headlock! Oh! Oh! Now he's striking her!" Number announced in his best announcer voice. Number started to swing at Yang's head, but stop short since they were just messing around.
Yang responded by announcing "Oh no! What will the Blonde Brawler do? Looks like she's broken the headlock! Now she's brought the Killing Machine to his knees!" Yang broke out of Number's head lock and pushed Number down to his knees with Yang holding the back of his armor. "Now she's giving him the elbow!" Yang announced as she tapped the top of Number's head with her elbow. Number fell to the ground and announced "Looks like this might be the end for the Killing Machine! We'll need a ref to give the count!" Ruby, now wide awake from the commotion, jumped from her bed and started to count "1! 2! 3!"
Number got up from the ground and wrapped his arms around Yang's waist. He picked her up and started to spin while he was laughing, Yang joining in the laugh. Number stopped the spin and looked up at Yang, questioning "So we good for a match?" Yang nodded and replied "Sure. Just let everyone shower and change and we'll head down." Number put Yang down and let Team RWBY shower and change for the match.
Number and Yang met up in the arena with Weiss acting as the official, as she usually did with Blake and Ruby up in the stands. Number took his fighting stance as Yang was while Weiss delivered the rules of the match. Weiss declared the match to start and the two fighters charged each other. "Do you know what I've noticed?" Ruby pointed out as she watched the match. "What?" Blake questioned from behind her book, not actually watching the fight.
"Number and Yang have been getting along really well after their first fight."
Blake lowered her book and paid close attention to the fight, and both of them seemed like they were having fun with it. Yang had a large smile across her face while Number would laugh from time to time. "You are correct Ruby." Blake stated as she raised her book back up. "I think that initial fight released all the tension between the two of them." Ruby nodded and added "That's good. I was getting tired of all the fighting between them. I felt like I was going to have to start picking a side in their fights."
"Thankfully it didn't come to that."
Ruby continued to watch the fight as Blake read her book until Number and Yang called it a draw. Number removed his helmet and the two fighters shook hands in good faith. "Nice work out there." Yang complimented as the two started heading out of the arena with Weiss behind them. "Thanks, you too. I think I'm starting to get your fighting style down." Number replied as they met up with Blake and Ruby.
"So… what do you want to do next?"
Number shrugged and replied "I'm good to do whatever. Maybe go find a place to shoot since I haven't held my guns since I landed here." Ruby exclaimed "I'll go with you! I haven't had any combat training in a bit so I might be getting rusty."
"Sounds good. Let's find a place to go shooting."
Number and Ruby separated from the group and ran off in their own direction, leaving Yang, Weiss and Blake to head to their room. Once there, Blake went to her bed and sat, nose still buried in her book as Weiss took a seat at the desk and began to study. Yang laid across her bed to chill when Blake exclaimed "You and Number seem to be getting along better." Yang chuckled "Yeah, we really are. Number isn't too bad… for a robot."
"So what happened? Did beating each other down really break all tension between the two of you?"
"I guess so. After the fight, we haven't argued or fought out of anger. The only fights we've had are for fun. We've even showed each other a few tips for fighting."
Blake didn't have any questions so she just kept quiet, leaving the room in silence. "Do you think that Number hooked up with any other EXOs back on Earth?" Yang questioned out of the blue. Blake lowered her book and Weiss looked up from her work. "Where did that just come from?" Weiss questioned. Yang shrugged as she stared up at the ceiling and responded "Just thinking… like how would they do it? Do they have parts like that? Or would they use attachments?" Blake exclaimed "Yang, please stop."
"Come one. You can't sit there and tell me it isn't bothering you."
"The only one bothering me here is you with your disturbing questions involving robot sex."
Yang took in a deep breath and sighed "I guess I'm the only one who thinks about the important stuff." Weiss disagreed "I highly doubt the recreational acts of alien robots is important."
"Says you."

Ruby and Number moved to a ridge in the Forest of Forever Fall, Ruby with Crescent Rose and Number with no weapon yet. He worked as a spotter for Ruby as she took a few shots at some outlying Beowolves. Number watched as Ruby took the head off a Beowolf, the body dropping like a ton of rocks before starting the disintegration process started. "Nice shot." Number complimented. "You could give Cassandra a run for her money." Ruby giggled and replied "Thanks Number. Why don't you take a few shots? I'm sure you have a sniper rifle in that invisible armory you have."
"I've only got one sniper rifle… and I only use it to screw around on missions so it isn't fully upgraded yet."
Number shifted his weight and pulled out his Exotic primary sniper rifle, No Land Beyond. Ruby ogled at the rifle and questioned "What is that beautiful weapon?" She scooted closer to Number to inspect the rifle since it was so glorious. It was a wooden frame with bolt action reload and a flip up iron sight and a six round magazine. "No Land Beyond." Number exclaimed. "It's a very rare weapon found on Earth, either from a man named Xur or from completing a special missions."
"What kind of mission?"
"Nightfall. It has all these modifiers that make it a thousand times more difficult, but it is entirely possible."
"What do you fight?"
Number went on to explain about the Archon, Sepkis Prime, Sekrion and Phogath. Ruby hanging on Number's every word of each time he fought the creatures and emerged victorious. "Wow, that's really cool." Ruby exclaimed as the two sat and talked. "You're… really cool." Number chuckled and patted Ruby's head, complimenting "Thanks Ruby. You're really cool too." Number noticed the small blush across Ruby's face and quickly exclaimed "So we were here to shoot, right?"
Number quickly laid back down and looked through the sights of his rifle, seeing a Beowolf through his sights. "Do you have a target?" Ruby questioned as she looked through her own scope. "Beowolf, 500 meters out. See it?" Number updated.
"I see it. Take the shot."
Number took a breath and let it out, pulling the trigger on his natural respatory pause. The rifle went off with a loud crack and the Beowolf's head was blasted into a stump. Number looked away from his sights and heard Ruby let out a shaky breath, laying her head on the ground. "That gun sounded amazing." Ruby sighed into the ground. Number shrugged and replied "Meh, I'm not a sniper rifle guy. I'm more of an auto rifle and machine gun guy myself. Care to give my rifle a try?"
Ruby's smile nearly broke off of her face as she reached for the sniper rifle. Number slid the rifle to Ruby, who took it greedily and immediately looked down the sights. Number pulled up his binoculars and looked around for Ruby's next target, but not seeing any Grimm to shoot. "I'm taking a shot at… this tree." Ruby exclaimed as she pulled the trigger. Number saw the side of a tree basically explode as the round tore through the bark.
Number heard Ruby let out another shaky breath as she dropped her head. "This sniper rifle is amazing." Ruby exclaimed. "Why don't you hang onto that rifle?" Number exclaimed.
"Really!?"
"Really."
Ruby looked like she was about to explode with joy as she looked to Number, to the rifle, and then back to Number. "OH MY GOD THANK YOU!" Ruby cheered as she practically tackled Number onto his back since he was on his side. Number embraced the hug and chuckled "You're welcome Ruby. I know you'll take care of the rifle for me." Ruby hugged him so tight he thought that she would dent his exoskeleton, but he knew she wouldn't/ couldn't. Ruby finally let him go and sighed "Thank you, Number. I will take extra special care of No Land Beyond."
"I know you will. Let's head back now. Starting to get dark."
Ruby poked "Is Mr. Big and Strong afraid of the dark?" Number shook his head and exclaimed "Not the dark, just what's in it." Ruby put her new sniper rifle on her back and questioned "What's in the dark?"
"Mainly? Hive. I told you about the Hive, right?"
Ruby nodded and responded "Yeah, you said that they were a group dedicated to eradicating the Light like it was some kind of Crusade." Number sighed and responded "Yeah. They work from inside the shadows. Thralls are the worst… just… so many of them… and they just keep coming." Number stopped and shuddered (or the EXO equivalent of a shudder) at the thought of all the Thralls attacking him. Ruby wrapped her arms around him, surprising him a bit, and proclaimed quietly "Don't worry. There are no Thralls or Hive or Fallen here. Just the Grimm and us." Number wrapped his arms around Ruby and replied "I know Ruby. Thanks for being here for me."
"What are friends for?"
The two continued until they reached the cafeteria, which Number had never been to. Ruby found her team and Number joined them, seeing another team with them. "Everyone, this is Number. Number, meet Team JNPR." Ruby introduced. Number waved and introduced "Hello. Like Ruby said, I'm Number." The blonde haired boy in a jacket covered in armor plates introduced "Hi, I'm Jaune Arc."
The crimson haired woman in golden armor introduced "I am Pyrrha Nikos." The smallest girl with white clothes and short orange hair introduced in a very cheery tone "I'm Noooorraaaaa!" The quiet one of the group exclaimed "I am Lie Ren."
"It's nice to meet all of you." Number exclaimed as he removed his helmet. "Didn't you put Team CRDL in the infirmary?" Jaune questioned.
"Yeah, but they started it."
Yang jumped in "That's what they get for trying to mess with the most badass bot on Remnant." Number replied "Well thanks for that Yang. Really boosts my Self-Worth programing."
"Not a problem."
Jaune interrupted "Yeah, thanks for that. Some of us are getting a bit of a break from their usual torment." Number questioned "Team CRDL was a group of bullies? Well, if I had any regrets about beating them up I wouldn't have any now." Number and Yang laughed while everyone else laughed uncomfortably. "So, how goes things around here?" Number questioned to break the tension. Pyrrha replied "Nothing of real note other than your landing and presence here."
"Really? Sounds boring."
"We take what we can get."
Number groaned "Then what do you do for fun around here?" Weiss pointed out "Study for classes that we attend."
"Again, sounds boring. Don't you go out on missions and do stuff?"
Ruby answered "We don't start doing that until our second semester." Number slammed his head on the table and groaned "Boring. I want to go back out and kill stuff."
"We can do that later. How about we go back into town and find more parts for your ship?"
"I guess we can do that."
Yang patted Number's shoulder and exclaimed "There there Number. How about another round? A good fight always cheers you up." Number groaned from the table "Sure, but after me and Ruby get the parts I need. I've made good head way when it comes to repairing my ship, but I'm still a ways away from being done." Shade materialized over Number's head and commented "At your current rate it will take… 28 months before you finish rebuilding your ship."
"Thank you, Shade, for your words of encourage meant. I feel so much better."
"Always happy to help, Guardian."
Number lifted his head and chuckled "Smart ass Ghost. Well, it was fun meeting everyone, but I have some work to do involving my ship. Later everybody." Number got up and Shade followed him until he was out of their vision. "Well, he's an interesting… well, he's interesting." Ren commented. "Number's awesome." Ruby exclaimed as she pulled out No Land Beyond. "He gave me this sniper rifle." Yang nodded and agreed "Number is pretty awesome. One hell of a fighter."
"He's cool in my books for wailing on CRDL." Jaune chuckled. "I bet he beat them without them making a scratch on him." Yang boasted. "Until Ruby showed up and cut his arm off." Ruby snapped "I apologized for that! And we're on good terms!"
"Easy Ruby, I'm just messing with you. But yeah… Number's pretty… pretty cool."
Everyone looked at Yang with raised eyebrows, prompting Yang to exclaim "What? The bot can fight… and he's pretty cool. We're friends." Everyone went back to their original conversations and went on with dinner.

Number adjusted one of the monitors in his ship and put it back into place. "Well Guardian, it appears that you have been having an eventful time since you've been here." Shade pointed out as he was scanning some of the ship. "Yeah, been working with Ruby to gather the parts for the ship. Learning more about Remnant with Weiss. Having quiet moments with Blake. And, of course, fights with Yang."
"Guardian, I would like to remind you that we are trying to leave this planet. We have a war to fight, and this planet has their own problems."
"I know Shade, but I'm starting to like it here. The people are friendly and the planet itself still has a chance and…"
Shade (in a sense) shook his head and sighed "What about your team? What do you think will happen to them?" Number dropped his head and replied "I think they'll be fine, at least for the time being. We will return to Earth… in time, but right now we're hear. We might as well enjoy it." Number went back to work until Shade questioned "And 'enjoying it' means to become closer to the local inhabitants?"
"Well, yeah."
"As close as you're getting?"
Number stopped what he was doing and questioned "What do you mean?" Shade floated closer to Number and exclaimed "You know exactly what I mean." Number was quiet for a while until he exclaimed "I can't help it. It's… it's like there is still a part of me that is still human."
"I know Guardian. We have work to do right now."
Number silently went back to work, repairing his ship as he thought about what Shade had pointed out.
