Chapter 6
Back in London Haru walked out of her room and looked quickly down at the clothes she was wearing, that Mrs. Judson had found to her. And it actually didn't look bad at all on her. In fact she thought that she maybe looked a bit cute.
She looked back and saw that her tail was swinging around. "I guess that I start to get used to this, who knows how long I have to stay like this." She said to herself and sighed.
She could hear voices downstairs and walked down the stairs. Dawson and Basil looked up at her when she walked down.
"I see you took your time getting ready." Basil said who was sitting in a tall red chair, which looked very comfortable.
"How rude!" Haru said a little annoyed from his comment, and tried to think of something to say back to him.
"Now now Basil, I don't think she used that long to get ready." Dawson said and shook his head. "Beside we don't want her to wear herself out, since it's not too long since she woke up."
"And that's why I'm not a big fan of women, sometimes they are too fragile." Basil answered him
Haru sat down on a small chair beside Dawson and tried not to look too irritated. Since the minute she had met Basil he had been kind of rude to her, for what she didn't know.
"Who is that?" A voice suddenly said and a small mouse girl stood in front of her. "You are very pretty." She said and smiled brightly to her.
"Thank you and you are a cute girl." Haru said kind of surprised, but smiled back to her. "Who are you?"
"I'm Olivia, and what's your name?" Olivia asked and looked curiously at her. It wasn't very often that a girl was visiting Basil, so Olivia was very curious if she was just a client like the others.
"I'm Haru, nice to meet you." Haru answered and bowed a bit as a greeting to her.
"We helped Olivia some time ago to find her father." Dawson explained to her.
"Yup! They did and I was with them and helped them solve the case!" Olivia said proudly and continued to look at her with a lot of curiosity in her eyes.
"Can I ask you something?" She asked with an innocent voice that most of girl who was on her age had.
"Sure." Haru said and wondered what it was that she wondered about.
"Are you Basil's new girlfriend?"
For a moment everyone inside the room was quiet for a moment, until Mrs. Judson came inside the room. "Who wants some cheesecake?" She asked brightly, but looked confused when she took a look at everyone. "Is something the matter?"
"O-of course not!" Haru said and felt that her whole face was turning red of embarrassment.
"We just met her! Don't ask such a stupid questions like that young girl." Basil said a bit loud and irritated, even he started to feel a bit embarrassed of what she had asked.
Dawson tried not to laugh of the situation and looked at Mrs. Judson. "I think I and Olivia would want some cake thank you."
"I see." Olivia said, and sounded kind of disappointed at the answers she got from her question. But wondered why they reacted so weird over it.
She got a little closer to Haru. "Dawson is always saying that Basil should get a girlfriend before he is too old." Olivia whispered to her and giggled.
"I-I see…." Haru laughed a little before she took a look over at Basil who held his head in his hands.
He looked up and their eyes suddenly met, and she quickly turned away. The situation felt kind of awkward between them right now, or maybe it was just she who overreacted over it. She shook her head quickly and was sure that she was just overreacting. It was just a little girl who was asking an easy question to her. Beside they had just met and she was just someone who needed help from them.
Olivia grabbed some cake from the plate Mrs. Judson was holding and started to eat. Haru smiled and took some too to be polite. She couldn't remember the last time she had eaten cheesecake, or eaten something at all.
While sitting in the chair she could feel that Basil was looking over at her again, but this time with a more serious look on his face.
"I would like to hear what happened and who you are, because it was indeed a really strange way you appeared before us."
Haru looked confused at him and wasn't really sure what to say to him. Should she tell them that she was a human in a mouse body, and what happened to her? She wasn't really sure.
They seemed really nice, maybe they could try to help her if she asked, but she didn't know if they would believe her if she told them. Then she decided there and then that she didn't have any other to help her at the moment, so she should see if they believed her story.
"It's kind of complicated you see…" She said and looked unsure down at the floor, didn't know where to start.
"I will go and make some more tea." Mrs. Judson said before Haru started to explain for them. It seemed like it was a long story, and it was always good with some tea after that.
The rest of them was now sitting there to listen what Haru was about to tell them. "I'm actually a human." She started to say, and started to tell them how she almost had been hit by a truck and everything else that had happened after that.
When she was finished talking everybody was looking at her with big eyes. "It's fine if you don't believe me, I bet it sounds really crazy." She said and got nervous. They had to think that she was some kind of crazy girl.
"If you please could explain a bit more of your situation," Basil said who had started to get incredible curious and interested. Never had he heard someone say something like that, and if she were a mouse now it would mean that she somewhat had been turned to a mouse.
"W-well…..you see…." Haru said nervously and started to explain the whole story from the beginning. As she told them her story they didn't interrupt her or seemed like they thought she was lying.
"And then I woke up here." Haru finished and took a deep breath, worried what Basil would say about her story.
"Very interesting….." Basil mumbled, resting his head in his hand. It looked like he was turning everything inside his head before answering.
"I think we have no other choice than help this lady." Basil said after been thinking for a while. Everyone looked over at him, and Dawson smiled. "Of course, we can't just leave someone in need of your help." He said and sounded a bit proud of himself for saying that.
"I will help too!" Olivia said and jumped out and down on the floor. "Oh no, you won't!" Basil said with a stern voice. The girl had come with them before, and almost got herself killed. He didn't want her to get in danger again.
"I'm sure Haru want me to help her!" Olivia turned around and hugged Haru tightly, looking up at her with big eyes that begged her to say yes.
"I guess, if you promise to not get yourself in trouble." Haru looked over to Basil and could see that he didn't like her answer, but she didn't want to disappoint Olivia either. Basil knew he was outnumbered, but he still wasn't for the idea to take Olivia with them if they had to go somewhere.
"I'm not even sure where we should start; all I have is this weird necklace." She said while she showed them the weird necklace that looked like a golden key with a clock at the end of it.
"Very interesting" Basil whispered to himself and walked over to where Haru were sitting to get a better look at the necklace. "It doesn't look like anything special." He said while inspecting it closely.
Basil's face was just some centimeters from Haru's as he inspected the necklace, curious what it could mean. He was so lost in his own thoughts that he didn't notice how embarrassed Haru was of having him so close to her.
"So you said this mouse just gave it to you?" He asked and looked up at her, when he did he noticed that their noses touched each other and he quickly moved a bit away from her.
"Yes, she said she didn't have any time to explain it, but I guess it was very important to her. " Haru said and had noticed that their noses had touched a little. She wondered if mice could blush too, because if they could her face had to be bright red right now.
"I bet she was a fairy!" Olivia said excited after thinking for a while. She wanted to help them solve the case too, but it seemed like they didn't think her theory could be true.
"My dear girl, fairies don't exist, they are just fairytales parents tell their kids." Basil explained to her.
"How can you say that!" Haru said to Basil and Dawson's surprise. She walked over to Olivia and hugged her tightly. "Don't listen to that boring grown up, fairies are real." Haru glared over to Basil, angry that he tried to destroy the fantasy to a so young girl.
"Really?" Olivia asked, looking up at Haru with her big puppy eyes. She had almost believed Basil's words, but when Haru said that they actually existed she started to believe again. "Then Basil is a liar!" The two girls looked over at Dawson to see what he thought about it.
"I will guess you two are right about that case." Dawson answered.
He couldn't possibly say he agreed with Basil when the two girls gave him that look. He too didn't want to make Olivia sad with that fairies don't exist that Basil came with, who know were glaring at Dawson for betraying him.
"Let's not argue about that anymore then." Basil said and rubbed his temple. Again he had been outnumbered even when he was right. This didn't turn out like that great day he had thought it would be when he woke up. "If we please could go back to solving your problem miss Haru."
"Yes, I'm sorry for getting carried away." She apologized, but she really had no idea how to get some hint about the mysterious necklace around her neck. Suddenly she her body felt all tired and she vision got blurry.
Basil saw that Haru didn't seem well and was quick to walk over to her to support her. "Is she alright?" Olivia asked worried when she saw that Haru almost passed out.
"I'm fine." Haru mumbled and held around Basil so she wouldn't fall on the floor. She was too tired to care about how close their bodies were.
Basil moved his hand to her forehead to check her temperature, but it didn't seem abnormal and figured that her body was just tired. "Dawson, could you please follow Olivia home?" Basil asked and looked over at him. It wasn't safe for a little girl to walk alone this late. Before they knew it the time had flew away and it was already dark outside.
"Of course I will." Dawson answered and started to help Olivia get her jacket.
"Please get better!" Olivia said before she and Dawson left them alone in the living room.
"I'm sorry if I'm a burden." Haru said and felt guilty to cause them to worry so much about her.
"Nonsense, it's common to help her maiden in distress." Basil said, and almost sounded like a prince to Haru's surprise. She couldn't help herself but laugh a little when she heard that. "It's the first time you have sounded so gentle." She whispered and leaned her head on his shoulder.
"I think you should get some sleep now." Basil said and shook his head. He started to follow her up to the room she had slept in before. Tomorrow they should get back to how they could solve this mystery and help Haru get back to her human form.
Basil helped her lay down in bed. She was already half asleep, but when Basil was about to leave her she grabbed his hand tightly.
"Could you please stay a little while?" She asked him, shocked that she suddenly acted so bold. It didn't seem to bother him at all. He grabbed a chair nearby and sat beside the bed. "If it would help you feel safer I don't mind at all, we will try to find this out tomorrow." He said and gave her a small smile to ease her mind.
Haru smiled back at him before she fell asleep. This time she had a dream about the time she was turned into a cat and was dragged to the cat kingdom. But this time it wasn't the Baron who helped her escape. Instead it was Basil who had taken his place in the dream and saved her.
