Dewey took the girls to school which was still being invaded by every local news station in Woodsboro. Cassidy would rather have crawl into the deepest blackest hole and die than deal with the entire school whispering about her and Sidney.
As Sidney was getting out of the car, Dewey must have sense her uneasiness.
"Don't worry you guys its school you'll be safe here." Dewey assures them.
Suddenly a female news reporter and her camera man corners both Sidney and Cassidy, demanding answering from last night's events.
"How does it be almost brutally butchered?" She asks aggressively.
Cassidy felt Sidney's hand tugging at her arm, pulling her away from the news reporter. She was thankful for that.
"Leave 'em alone." Dewey says.
She could still hear the reporter asking more question
"The people have a right to know! How does it feel?"
As they were walking towards the entrance, Sidney had spotted Gale Weathers in her news van not too far away.
"Wait." Sidney said, grabbing on Tatum's wrist.
"What?" Tatum questions.
Sidney looks at her best friend. "Just a sec."
"Are you gonna give her the black eye she deserves?" Cassidy asks a bit hopeful.
"No." Sidney says walking over to Gale.
Tatum signs walking towards the school's front entrance. However, Cassidy was curious about what Sidney wanted to talk to Gale about. She moves a bit closer not enough to attract their attention but close enough to hear their conversation.
"Stop right there." Gale warns.
"I'm not here to fight." Sidney assures. "I just want to talk."
"Kenny. Camera. Now." Gale gestures for her camera man to grab his camera to record their conversation.
"Off the record. Gale." Sidney says.
Gale scoffs. "Forget it."
"Please. You owe me."
"I owe you shit!" Gale snaps at the girl.
"You owe my mother!" Sidney argues.
Gales gives in, gesturing Kenny to keep his camera off.
"Your mother's murder was last year's hottest court case." Gale informs. "Somebody was gonna write a book about it."
"Right and it had to be you with all your lies and bullshit theories." Sidney said.
"What is your problem?" Gale questions. "You got what you wanted. Cotton Weary is in jail. They're gonna gas him. My book is not gonna change that."
Sidney remain silent for a moment. It was like Gale's words struck a nerve.
"Do you still think he's innocent?" Sidney asks.
"Your testimony put him away." Gale says. "It doesn't really matter what I think."
"During the trial, you did all those stories about me. You called me a liar." Sidney's voice was now low and unsure.
"I think you falsely identified him, yes." Gale said.
"Have you talked to Cotton?"
"Many times."
"Has his story changed?" Sidney asks.
"Not one word." Gale said with confidence. "He admits to having sex with your mother."
"He's lying." Sidney said in disbelief. "She would have never touched him. He raped her. And then…he butchered her. Her blood was all over his coat."
"He was drunk that night." Gale argues. "He left his coat after your mother seduce him."
"I saw him leave." Sidney said, sounding more unsure than before.
Cassidy was confused. Sidney was so sure that Cotton Weary murdered her mother. Up until now, she never doubted Cotton killed Maureen. But Cassidy was curious to why the 'all of a sudden' doubt now.
"I saw him leave wearing it."
"No, you saw someone leave wearing that coat." Gale said. "The same someone who planted that coat in Cotton's car, framing him."
"No." Sidney says. "Cotton murdered my mother." Even she didn't believe that herself anymore.
Unless she thinks Cotton could be innocent. Cassidy thinks.
"You're not so sure anymore are you?" Gale questions softly.
Tatum came over to where Sidney and Gale was talking. Putting her arm around Sidney's shoulder, she flashes a smile at Gale.
"Nice welt, sweetie." Tatum compliments. "Let's go Sid."
"The killer is still on the loose isn't he?" Gale asks Sidney. "Those murders are related."
Sidney and Tatum walks away from Gale.
"I'm sorry I mangled your face." Sidney apologizes, walking away with Tatum and Cassidy.
"Sidney, Cassidy, please don't go!" Gale pleads.
Tatum turns around. "Just stop."
"This is a mistake," Sidney complains, closing her locker. "I shouldn't be here."
Cassidy could feel everyone's eyes burning into the back of her skull, whispering as they walk past her.
"I agree, Sid. Neither one of us." Cassidy said, slamming her locker shut.
"I want you two to meet me right here after class, alright?" Tatum orders.
Sidney agrees, looking at Stu. Cassidy avoided eye contact with him. "Hey, you haven't seen Billy around? Is he really pissed?"
Stu looks up from hand mirror he was looking at his reflection with. "You mean after you branded him after the 'Candyman'? No his heart is broken."
Tatum hits him on the shoulder. "Stu."
"Ow!"
Loud screaming erupted out of nowhere. Everyone was looking at the direction it was coming to see it was someone dressed in the 'Father Death' costume. He was screaming and running down the hallway. This earn a few laughs and shrieks from the other students. Cassidy found it disturbing and nerve-wrecking.
Sidney gasp and jumps in fear when the guy in the ghostface screamed in her face. She was fed up.
"Why are they doing this?" Sidney questions.
"Are you kidding me? Look at this place it's like Christmas!" Stu says excitedly.
Cassidy looks at him with disgust. "Asshole." She mumbles, walking away from them.
"Cassidy! Sidney!" Tatum calls.
She started to run away. She wanted to hide away from the world and not be seen again. Cassidy kept running until she bumps into someone slightly shorter than her.
"Oh I'm sorry!" pipes a boy's voice.
Cassidy looks to see that it was only Matt Macher, Stu's 14-year-old brother.
"It's okay, Matt." Cassidy said, helping him pick up his books for class.
"Cassidy?" She could see how his eyes lit up. Of course, it wasn't a rumor that Matt had a huge crush on Cassidy. "I-I-I didn't mean to bump into you!"
"It's okay it's okay." Cassidy assures him, trying to put on a small smile.
"I got something for you." Matt began to look into his backpack. Cassidy sighs. Matt had this habit of giving her 'gifts' whenever he sees her. But he never gets the chance to because Stu would always steal them before Matt could give it to her.
"Matt, you can't-"
"Yes! For once Stu didn't steal it." Matt says cheerfully. He pulls out a card and a small box. "Open it."
Not wanting to hurt his feeling, Cassidy decides to open the card. It was one of those Hallmark cards for mourning. It reads on the front: In Deepest Sympathy. On the inside the card reads: Thinking of you as you mourn the loss of someone so special. Hoping with time, a gentle peace will return to your life.
Cassidy was actually touched. "Wow, Matt I…I dunno what to say. Thank you."
"You're welcome."
The bell rings.
"Listen Matt, thank you but I need to go to class." Cassidy quickly runs down the hall to get to her class.
"Wait!" Matt calls out. "You forgot your other…gift."
