Chapter 6
The next couple of weeks started going better for Rory. She caught up with all the work and started improving her grades. She started getting along with more people at Chilton. Even Paris was being civil. She left school a bit late this one day because she had stayed behind to talk to a teacher about an assignment. She ran out and stopped when she saw it was pouring down with rain.
"Just my luck." She muttered, feeling in her bag and pulling out an umbrella. She saw her bus at the stop and started to run but got there just as it pulled away. "Great." She grumbled. Her umbrella then decided to turn inside out, breaking it in the meantime. "Urghhh!" She groaned as she sat down in the pouring rain with nothing to shield her.
Just then a smart car drove up beside her. "Need a ride?" Tristan asked.
"No thanks." Rory grumbled.
"So you're just going to sit there in the pouring rain?" He asked.
"I like the rain. Maybe I will sing in it." She said.
"Come on, you're going to get ill if you sit here. The next bus may take ages. I can give you a lift back so you don't get any wetter than you are now although that might be hard seeing as you're soaking already." He joked.
"I'm fine." Rory grumbled.
"Come on, Rory. I promise not to talk to you the whole ride if that's what you want." He smirked.
Rory smirked slightly. "Fine. Thanks." She said getting into his car. "I need to go to the diner though because I have a shift there."
"That's cool. I can drop you there." He said.
"Isn't this like right out of your way?" Rory asked. "Won't your parents worry where you are?"
Tristan shrugged. "I don't mind. Nah they're probably out anyway."
"Oh. Ok." Rory said noticing his flippant tone.
"So you work at the diner?" He asked.
"Yeh it's Luke's. I helped out there when I was younger so when I got older, Luke employed me properly. I like working there, it's fun." She said.
"So you've known Luke for ages then?" He asked.
"Yeh since I was like 8. Mom met him and they became friends like immediately although I think she annoyed the hell out of him first." Rory smirked.
"Ah so there's still hope for me then!" He smirked.
"What?" Rory asked confused.
"Well you say I constantly annoy the hell out of you but if it ended well for your mom and Luke, there may still be hope for me with you." He gave her a cheeky grin.
"You really do think highly of yourself." Rory shook her head.
"Well you've already admitted I'm your friend so I'm obviously doing something right." He smirked.
Rory just rolled her eyes. Tristan pulled up outside the diner. "Here." He said.
"Well thanks for the lift." Rory said. "Why don't you come in for a coffee or something?"
"I'm ok." He said.
Rory saw him glance through the window and saw Luke looking at them. She laughed. "Are you scared of Luke?" She teased.
"He's staring at me!" Tristan defended himself.
Rory smirked. "That's just Luke." She said getting out of the car. "Are you coming or going because I'm getting soaked here?" She said.
"Here, take this." He said giving her his umbrella.
"Thanks." She said. "Are you seriously not coming in?" She laughed.
"I'm fine." He said.
"Riiiight. Well I'm sure I'll see you tomorrow then." Rory rolled her eyes and headed into the diner. "Hey Luke! Sorry I'm a bit late." She said.
"Is that the same guy who came to your party?" He asked.
"Yep. He gave me a lift because I missed my bus and then my umbrella broke." She said.
"Right." He said.
"He won't come in because he's scared of you." Rory smirked.
Luke smirked. "Good."
Rory laughed. "He's just a friend." She said going to retrieve her apron.
"You tell yourself that." He said under his breath as he watched the car drive away.
Luke and Rory went home after closing up the diner. They drove into the driveway to find Tristan's car there and him leaning against it. "God he has some bottle." Luke grunted getting out with her.
"I'll go see what he wants. I'll be in, in a minute." She said.
Luke looked hesitant.
"Please Luke." She said.
"Fine but if you're not in after 10 minutes, I'm coming out." He said.
Rory smirked. "Ok."
Luke went inside shooting Tristan a look before disappearing into the house.
"What's up? I thought you were going home." Rory said.
Tristan shrugged. "Changed my mind."
"You know I could call this stalking now." She joked. "I should really call the police."
Tristan smirked. "Sorry."
"So what's up?" Rory asked. "You know Luke's going to come out in 10 minutes if I'm not in by then so if you're planning to kidnap me, don't." She joked.
"I just...I wanted to say...I..." Tristan didn't know what to say so he walked forward and brought his lips to hers.
Rory was shocked. She wasn't expecting that. "Um...thank you?" She said, not knowing what to say.
"Rory..." He said.
"I have to go." She said rushing into the house.
Tristan watched her go and slowly got into his car and drove away.
"Rory?" Lorelai said as Rory rushed past her in the hallway and went into her room.
Lorelai went through to the kitchen.
"What was that?" Luke asked.
"No idea. She just came running in without saying a word." She said confused.
"That jerk, I swear if he said something..." Luke said angrily.
"Who?" She asked.
"That Tristan guy! He gave Rory a lift back and then he was waiting for her here." He exclaimed. "I'm going to kill him." He said.
"Whoa, stop where you are mister!" Lorelai said. "Let me talk to Rory first."
"Fine but I swear if he did or said anything..." He said.
"Yeh yeh you'll kill him, I know." Lorelai said.
She went and knocked on Rory's door. "Hon, can I come in?"
"Yeh." Rory said.
Lorelai went in closing the door behind her. "Everything ok?" She asked.
"I don't know." Rory admitted. "I don't know what to think."
"About what?" Lorelai asked concerned. "You're scaring me hon. Has something happened?"
"Sort of.." Rory said. She sat down on her bed. "Urghhh, why did he have to do that?"
"Who? Tristan?" Lorelai asked. "Talk to me, Rory. Luke's one minute away from hunting him down and killing him."
Rory sighed. "He kissed me." She said quietly.
"He..wow...ok..." Lorelai said, not really knowing what to think. Her kid had experienced her first kiss. "So...you don't know what to think?" She asked cautiously.
"I just... I don't know. He can be so annoying, he's cocky, he's like the king of Chilton and all the girls fawn over him." She ranted. "But then..."
"Then what?" Lorelai prompted.
"Then he can be nice. Thoughtful. I don't know what to do, mom." Rory admitted. "He's sort of got a reputation at Chilton."
"Do you like him?" She asked.
"I don't know. We banter and joke but then he annoys the hell out of me." Rory sighed. "It reminds me of your and Luke's relationship when you first met."
"Well maybe you need to think about it." Lorelai said.
Rory looked up at her mom. "Do you think I like him?"
"Well I know you invited him to your party out of your own free will and you talk about him a lot." She said.
"I do?"
"Granted it's about what annoying thing he's done but you still talk about him." Lorelai said. "I think maybe there's a possibility you like him."
"I'm so stupid." Rory groaned. "I said thank you!"
"When?" Lorelai asked confused.
"When he kissed me! I said thank you!" Rory exclaimed.
"Wait, he kissed you and you said thank you?" Lorelai stifled a smirk.
"Yes and then I ran!"
"Well that was very polite." Lorelai smiled.
"No, it was stupid!" Rory groaned.
"Look hon, everyone feels like this after their first kiss." Lorelai assured her. "Just take some time to get your head straight. Think about what you want."
Rory sighed. "Ok."
"I'll make sure Luke doesn't kill him." Lorelai joked.
"Thanks." Rory said sarcastically.
Lorelai smiled and went back out to the kitchen where she found Luke cooking.
"So? Can I kill him now?" He asked.
Lorelai laughed. "Hold back mister. It's a bit more complicated than that. Now promise me you won't freak out."
"Oh because that's reassuring." He said sarcastically.
"She got kissed." She told him.
"What?" Luke exclaimed. "I knew it! I knew he was after her!"
"Luke, please." Lorelai said. "I love that you love Rory and want to protect her but she has to figure this out on her own. She's confused."
Luke let out a breath. "Fine. So you think she likes him?"
"I think she does but she needs to figure that out herself." Lorelai said.
"And you're ok with this?" Luke asked.
"No but I knew this would come at some point. I just want her to be happy. And Rory's sensible. I trust her." Lorelai said.
Luke sighed. "Yeh you're right."
Lorelai smiled and kissed him. "I love that you care so much."
Luke gave her a small smile. "He just better not hurt her."
"Well if he does, then you do have my permission to kill him." Lorelai smirked.
"Good." Luke smirked.
So things are hotting up! What do you think? Review and let me know! :)
