Nothing had been heard of the captain or Spock for almost an hour when Mr. Sulu decided he had to take the matter in his hands, even if there was not much matter around him at the time. He cleared his throat. „Lieutenant Uhura, have you heard anything from the captain? We've been sitting here, holding the Enterprise and checking everything carefully for … for a considerably long time." Uhura turned her chair slowly, grinning slightly. „I haven't heard anything I'm afraid." Somebody in the room suddenly seemed to have a really bad cough. Sulu let his head fall into his hands. „Well, this is just … great. Great" „I'm sure he's alright," Mr. Chekov said. „Oh, I'm sure as well! Meanwhile, this ship is probably in danger and so are we! What's for the captain to do than to … whatever, I don't even wanna know." There was an awkward silence before he raised his voice again. „Anyway, we have to do something, right? What has Starfleet got to say about it?" Lieutenant Uhura sighed. „You see, Mr. Sulu, we should have thought of it." Sulu raised his eyebrows. „Of what?" „I've been trying to reach Starfleet command until it dawned on me that … we aren't exactly able to." „What? Why … we're in the wrong time. Right?" „That's right." Mr. Sulu looked at his instruments. Then he turned abruptly. „You know what? This is ridiculous! Everyone should have thought of that! We know that we lose contact when a time warp occurs. Why didn't the captain think of that? Why didn't Spock?" Just then, McCoy burst into the room. „Have you seen Jim? I haven't heard from him for … what are you all looking at?" As the door had opened, most of the crew had turned and was now staring in his direction, unable to say anything. „What's going on? Is something wrong with me? Is there a giant spider growing on my back … Damn it!" Bones tried to shoot a glance at his back, just to make sure, when he noticed that they weren't staring at him but rather at the two people behind him, seemingly lost in the doorway. „Jim! I've been looking for you all over the place! What … what's going on?" He turned to see everyone's gazes still fixed on the captain and Mr. Spock. „What is it with you? Go on, do your work!" An unnerved McCoy already clenched his fists when the captain suddenly cleared his throat. „It's alright, Bones." „Oh, it's alright? How exactly do you define alright? I'd say we're far from it! We're stuck in the middle of space, in the goddamn year of 2005, with nobody on this ship working … and what have you been doing the whole time?" Spock shot a glance at the Captain, then tried to slip away unnoticed. McCoy had his arm right there to stop him. „Going somewhere, Spock? Look, as a matter of fact, I don't care what in the hell you are up to. All I know is that you better get your act together and start taking control of this nonsense." „You are absolutely right, Bones, as always." Kirk smiled at him and patted his back as he made his way to his chair. McCoy looked like he couldn't decide whether to be confused or angry. „We have to take control of the situation. Now, if I remember correctly, I told you to contact Starfleet command. Has anyone done that?" Uhura looked at Mr. Sulu, worried. „Well … Captain, as you said yourself … we're not in our usual time. So …" „For God's sake," Sulu cut in, „are you sure you're alright, Captain? Because I'd suggest you check if you got any brain damage from the turbulences …" „Excuse me, Mr. Sulu, but is that the right way to address your Captain?" „Frankly, I don't really care right now. If you take off with Spock in the middle of an emergency …" „What are you suggesting?" „Look, nevermind. What Uhura tried to say was that we cannot contact Starfleet Command because we are in the goddamn – excuse my language – year of 2005! But somehow you have failed to notice. And somehow Mr. Spock, genius, has failed to notice as well. „Well … that is, indeed, that may cause us some trouble …" McCoy had looked from one to the other with big eyes. He was shaking his head. „Spock, what's your stance on the situation?" Spock turned in his seat, the lights in front of him flashing in an unusual way. As he saw Bones' look he tried to push a button with his palm. „I am positive that there is a perfectly reasonable explanation." „And what would that be?" „As I have said before, in the case of this emergency, as Mr. Sulu has correctly pointed out, which is, without doubt, beyond any form we have experienced so far, and likely will not ever experience again, and with the knowledge in mind, that, had it been another day, or another night, which we might not too often be able to tell apart, seeing as we are, as a matter of fact, in space, but without doubting the inevitable and questioning the righteous man in our middle, because that would be, with all due respect, against the Constitution of our Starfleet." Mr. Spock smiled. Bones looked at him blankly. He opened his mouth and shut it again. Mr. Sulu slowly stood up from his chair and moved towards him. He whispered. „Bones, I think you better get the two out of here and somewhere safe. There is something very, very wrong." „I …" „He practically told us he had no idea. When has Spock ever had no idea? At all?" „You keep this ship working, Sulu. I'll see what I can do." He pushed Mr. Sulu to the side. „Captain, I'm afraid you are needed in Sick Bay at once." „Why is that, Bones? I thought I was supposed to …" He shot a glance at Spock and smiled. „ … was supposed to, you know. I was supposed to." „There is something important, like, a … the Captain of this ship has to deal with it-important." „Oh! Important? Why didn't you say so? Spock, you better come with? My First Officer needs to see the important!"
