Dance with Me Tonight

Ken was sitting at the table that was at the farthest corner of the garden, by himself. He didn't want to cross paths with his ex-girlfriend; they haven't had the best of breakups. He did saw Miyako's point for it, though. They didn't have that much in common but, as Daisuke got himself a girlfriend, and every other digidestined seem to be having a stable development in their love lives, Ken figured he could give the loud girl in glasses a chance. She was, if not beautiful, pretty, and smart.

Their relationship started with a good base of friendship and an incredible amount of conversation topics. The thing is that Ken was never the affectionate type of person, especially in public; he got embarrassed even holding hands, and that was something that truly irritated the girl he was dating. Miyako always dreamed about sharing an umbrella with the boy genius, going to festivals holding hands, to kiss under a tree full of blossoms... But Ken just couldn't make himself comfortable enough to please her.

Miyako gave him time; still Ken wouldn't let her do things her way. She got angry at him more frequently, and they start fighting over every single disagreement they had. At some point, the girl realized that she wasn't willing to spend more time waiting for him to grow comfortable with their relationship and, as she told him just that, they had one last fight that ended up in a pretty bad and lousy breakup. That happened about eight months ago.

Ken didn't even want to come to Jou's wedding, just so he didn't have the chance of meeting her. Daisuke told him that Miyako had a new boyfriend and she was coming to the party with him. Indeed, Ken had seen them at the ceremony and now they were sitting at the other side of the garden, talking happily with the newlyweds. He was happy for Miyako, he truly was; she deserved to have someone that could make her smile like that, and Ken knew he wasn't fit for the job.

The blueish haired young man was so absorbed in his thoughts, that he didn't notice the one person with curious eyes that was coming his way.

"Hey, Ken." a blond tall guy said, sitting in the chair next to him.

Ken turned his head towards his friend, noticing his presence for the first time. "Mmm..? Hi, Takeru." he realized that the blond was alone and very far from the others. "What are you doing so far from the VIP's guest table?"

Takeru made a quick pouting expression. "Are you kicking me back? And here I was, worrying about you, coming all the way from the other side of the party to see how you're doing... Figures my concern is not welcome..."

"No, I didn't mean it that way!" Ken hurried an answer. "I was just wondering..."

"Ahaha... I'm just kidding, silly, don't worry." the blond gave him a smile. "I did want to check up on you, though. I thought you were going to be at the same table as the rest of us..."

"I asked Jou to put me here." Ken glanced down. "I'm still not very comfortable around... you know... I wasn't even coming but, Jou asked me himself. He said it was important for him that all of us were here with him. That he needed the support. So I came. But it's not really that I wanted to. I appreciate Jou's kindness for not making me sit down there, though."

The bearer of the crest of Hope glanced back at his table and catches a couple of curious glances coming their way from some of the girls. He smiled at them reassuringly, and turns his attention back to his friend; Ken had noticed them too.

"Do you want to go for a walk?" the blond asked getting up.

Ken smiled a little, he really liked Takeru's ability to read the situations, so unlike Daisuke, who was denser than pancakes mix. "Yeah, I'll like that."

Together they made their way through the guests and got around the big white tent where the party was being held, which was surrounded by a line of pine trees. The place was huge and had lots of smaller themed gardens all around, as well as a little shrine. They walked for a while, talking about this being their last year at school, what kind of jobs they would like to have, and other simple stuff.

They'd had gotten very far from the actual party, but even from there, they could hear the music changing to a more danceable one.

"Ahaha. It seems that the moment Jou was more afraid of is now here." Takeru said giggling a little, imaging their senpai trying to dance while being totally nervous.

Their laughter couldn't be stopped as the both of them pictured the scene. It was funny how some things would never change. For some reason, thinking about the older guy dancing with his beloved wife, as funny as it could seemed, also made Ken return to his previous mood. He had scolded himself over and over again for not being able to have a proper relationship. It was as if he didn't want to let anyone in to his heart, and was being cold on purpose.

Takeru, noticing the sudden change of mood of his friend, turned to him, extending his hand and bowing slightly. "May I have this dance?"

The gesture took Ken by surprise, leaving him speechless for a moment. "Are you serious?" he asked. The blond smiled at him and nodded. "But... we're both guys..."

"Does it bother you?" Takeru asked with his hand still extended towards Ken. "There is only the two of us here, nobody else will see."

After thinking about it for a moment, Ken smiled and took Takeru's hand. The music wasn't very loud at that distance, just enough for them to get the rhythm. At first, the brunet was a bit stiff given the closeness to his friend, but as soon as he forgot about it and relaxed, he actually enjoyed the dance.

"Is it on purpose, or its just natural to you?" the ex-Kaiser asked jokingly.

"What do you mean?"

With a soft giggle Ken answered. "You, acting such prince-charmingly like, most of the time."

Takeru blushed slightly. "Uh... I… umm..."

Ken tried to suppress another giggle and he shook his head. They kept dancing several songs, getting more comfortable with each one that passed. Finally, the music faded again as the sky started to illuminate with fireworks.

"Let's go back; I have kept you long enough for myself." Ken said, taking a step apart from his friend, gazing at the lighting over them.

"I'm here, with you, because I wanted to." was Takeru's answer.

When Ken turned back to face him, the blond was offering a light blue flower to him. The brunet stared at him for a long time; he had felt his heart skip a beat as his eyes had made contact with the blue ones of the blond standing in front of him and he couldn't contain the butterflies flying all over his belly.

Takeru gave him the sweetest smile the boy genius has ever seen, taking a step forward, and he put the small flower over the other boy's ear. Ken smiled shyly with a very soft blush tinting his cheeks.

When I heard Olly Mur's song with the same title as this drabble, I had the need to write this. The images just started to flow to my mind and I was so excited to add this little story to my Ken related fics!

I usually complain about my love life being so damn awful right now, but still can be completely sour about love. I love being in love! That's why, while I wrote this, I decided this was going to be my Digimon Valentine's fic. It has the romantic, sweet atmosphere that I dream of finding one day for myself.

So, yeah, I hope that you had enjoy this not so short drabble. And, see you next time!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! =D
