Author's note
Well this has taken a while. I apologize in advance for this chapter, it's not my favorite, but it sets up the scene for future chapters. I also just needed to get something else up for this story…it has been far too long.
Please to Review it really does make my day. I don't want to write if you don't want to read.
Four months later…
It had been four months since that dreadful night that had left the youngest Winchester's heart shattered like a piece of glass. Four months since Dean and Sam had decided they would protect Rebecca with everything they had. It had been four months of hunting, of Sam and Dean trying to talk to Rebecca, making sure she was okay, four months of her lying and saying she was fine; four months since Castiel had shown his face.
Four months and Rebecca's heart was aching, but she was a hunter; this was their way of life.
The Winchester trio were doing all low level hunts, keeping a low profile and although Dean wouldn't admit it, Rebecca knew it was because he was scared she would do something stupid if they gave her the chance.
They had just finished doing a simple salt and burn, well what should have been a simple salt and burn, but actually turned into a grumpy ghost who decided it would be fun to fling Sam and Bec into some gravestones. Nothing too extreme, Dean wasn't overly worried, but as soon as they got back to the motel he was going to patch them up anyway, just to make sure. He was concerned however about Rebecca, she hadn't spoken a word about Nick since it had happened.
Whenever Sam or Dean asked her how she was going she would just smile and give some cheesy line like "I'm as good as Dean with pie" and then that was that.
Dean knew that she wasn't a 'wear your heart on your sleeve' kinda girl, but heck he knew better than anyone how Winchesters dealt with emotional strife…. it wasn't healthy.
Nick's words were running through his mind "Promise me you will look after Beck. She will push you away at first, but she needs family"
He truly meant it when he said he would look after Beck, she was a Winchester now, and family always came first. However dealing with a female sibling was new territory for Dean, he wasn't used to the mood swings, waiting for the bathroom and he couldn't just get her to talk the way he did was Sammy. He did know her well enough to know that she was lying when she said she was okay. He didn't appreciate being lied to.
The car ride back to the motel had been quiet, Bec had ridden shotgun and apparently had no interest in Dean's 'driver picks the music rule'. He didn't mind too much though when he realized Bec loved the same music he did, therefore the entire ride back was endured by listening to some classic ACDC.
Dinner was eaten in silence and Bec avoided conversation while Dean was checking her cuts to make sure they were all okay. She tried her best around Sam and Dean, she knew it wasn't fair to be acting moody around them, but she didn't know how to let people in. Nick…He was the only one she knew how to talk to.
Beck had always been scared of people, scared of letting them down or being rejected, so she kept a brave smile on her face and never told anyone what she was really feeling. She protected herself, only this time her defense mechanism felt like it was just damaging her further, but she didn't know how to deal with things any other way.
It was always the same, emotional strife in any way and she just simply shut down, Nick was the only one that wouldn't let her, he would pull her back out of her cave and force her to face the world head on…..
But he was gone now…
Never to return.
Sam and Dean were sitting right next to her, only meters away, but never had Bec ever felt more alone than right in that moment.
How long Bec had spent in her own mind, staring into space she had no idea, but both Sam and Dean had noticed. Dean was watching her, he could see the pain written all over her face, but he had no idea how to fix it and it well and truly pissed him off.
He was supposed to look after his siblings and know how to fix things, but this…this was too big. She was broken.
"Hey guys, I'm going to go for a walk. Want me to grab you anything while I'm out?" Bec pulled everyone out of their rather depressing thoughts as she made her way to the door.
"No I'm fine thanks kiddo," Sam offered.
"Don't call me kiddo Sammy" Bec smirked even Dean offered a smile, she was so a Winchester.
"Where are you going?" Dean wanted to know where she was going to make sure he could check up on her if need be.
"Wherever my feet take me" Honestly she didn't know the area at all, she planned on finding a liquor store and drinking it, but Dean didn't need to know that.
"Take your phone."
"Dude I'm eighteen, quit worrying I can look after myself" She was grabbing her coat and heading to the door.
"Take your phone." Was all Dean offered in reply.
"Yes sir" Bec smiled as she walked out the door.
"…And don't call me sir!" Bec had already left, but she smiled at him through the window and saluted as she walked past. She had heard him.
An hour had passed and Beck still hadn't returned, Sam was starting to worry which he did not try to hide.
"Dean, she's been gone for an hour, shouldn't we…you know…look for her?"
"Come on Sammy she needs her space, she's 18…" Dean said as he pulled out his phone and called someone.
"Who are you calling?" Sam asked rather confused.
"Rebecca"
Sam smirked to himself, of course he was, calling her this was Dean they were talking about. He was an a-class student on how to look after younger siblings and be an extremely over protective older brother.
"Becs? You've been gone for a while are you okay?" Dean frowned and signaled for Sam to grab his jacket.
"Are you drunk…where are you… All right stay put… Sammy and I are coming to get you" Sam and Dean were in the Impala and driving to get their little sister before either of them had a chance to even think about what was happening.
Dean sighed, "We're in for a long night Sammy".
"It's Sam."
