"..." Kagome had already made it out of the hellish pits that surrounded the Tao estate, now standing atop a hill, hidden by a shadow cast over her by a tree which she was leaning against. Her eyes roamed over the city she'd grown up in for so many years; closing her eyes at the image of her father dragging her away from her mother, the woman who had given birth to her...she wanted to show her, that she was still there...still alive. "Not yet..." she whispered, smiling as she watched a woman kneel down by a river, with a basket of white roses. She placed each one gently into the flowing water of the river as she let her grievance drift with the gentle current. "Mama..." Kagome smiled, turning away, she took off in a run up the hill that led to the mountain she was to embark on.
She would return to her mother before returning to Ren, after her training at the shrine, and then she would show her mother how much stronger she was. She couldn't yet, but soon... "I'll see you soon, mama!"

"Go away,"
Kagome's face fell. Hours of making the trek through the woods along the face of the mountain, and she had finally made it to the shrine at the peak around night fall. In fact, she hadn't stopped walking even then; the sun had started to create a glow around the mountains peak. "You can't turn me away! I was sent by Lady Ran!"
"The Shaman King himself could have sent you, and I'd still turn you away."
The woman was as old as they got, her flesh outstretched over her bones and her eyes closed from no doubt blindness. She had a cane in one hand and clear saucer in the other, in the saucer was a white pearly liquid.
"Please, I came to get trained as a Cleric and an Onmyōji."
"Keh, people spend years learning to become one of those, yet you think you can learn to become both? Foolish child, you must be just ten or eleven years of age, what makes you think you can learn to be a cleric or Onmyōji?"
Kagome frowned, "I'm almost thirteen...and I know I can learn...because I refuse to leave unless it is with those teachings. You can turn me away now, and tomorrow, and the next day...and the next...but I will not leave, I will not budge! I have someone I wish to protect, and the only way I know that I will be able to serve him best, is to know that I can heal him of injury and illness in some cases and shield him from harm in others."
The woman didn't say anything, "you are too frail, too weak, you will break after just a day, I'm sure...the answer is no. Now leave my shrine!"
"I will not!"
A bird landed on the saucer, placing its beak in the liquid a few times before flying off. Kagome was mesmerized by what had happened, but the old woman didn't even seem to have taken notice. She turned and left.
"...Ren...I won't give in...not for anyone or anything!"

(Two Days Later)
Kagome sat down tired as the rain fell heavily around her. The old woman had been ignoring her for the last two days, but true to Kagome's word, she hadn't moved except to relieve herself in the forest away from the shrine or find something to eat.
"You still here, girl?"
Kagome glared at the old woman. "...I told you...I'm not leaving!"
"So I can see,"
"..."
"It was a joke, girl...I'm blind. Feel free to laugh at this old woman's sense of humor." The woman said this blandly without and actual form of humor.
Kagome merely stared blankly at the woman, not bothering to laugh at the stale joke. 'I can't give in...'
Kagome watched the old woman leave, settling herself on the ground, she popped a few of the berries she'd found earlier in her mouth and continued to wait outside in the rain.

(Four Days Later)
Kagome sneezed, her cheeks were blotchy and her eyes red, her nose stuffy no doubt from cold she'd conceived a few days back. Coughing, she sighed irritably and laid down on the muddy grass, it was still raining, and the old woman was no more close to training her as an Onmyōji or Cleric.
"Still here?"
"What do you think," Kagome wheezed out painfully, her throat tightening, burning with each word. She did her absolute best not to cough. Putting a few more berries in her mouth, she closed her eyes and chewed the sweet, yet acerbic berry.
"I think you are a fool, and you should have gone back home when you had the chance."
"...nothing...for me back home...and I'm nothing if...I return without learning something."
The old woman stood by the screen door, safe away from the rain. Her hand moved a little as if something had bitten her or maybe tickled her. "Foolish girl."
Kagome chuckled dryly, "so I've heard."

(Two Days Later)
Ren stared out the window of Kagome's room; he'd been sleeping in there since her departure. Something about the floating paper garden soothed him and helped him to relax. His nights had recently been plagued by annoying thoughts. Thoughts about whether or not Kagome had made it safely to the Mountain Guardian Shrine, or if she'd died before arriving, maybe deviated from her path, returned home to her mother...which he doubted, because of her father. He wondered, if she had made it, was her training going well, or was she being brutally tormented by the old hag who lived atop the mountain in the shrine. Maybe it was going great and she was a quick learner, and a teacher's pet to boot.
Shaking his head, he sighed irritably before tossing himself back onto Kagome's bed, closing his eyes, he let sleep drag him away from these nerve-wracking thoughts. Hopefully, he'd see her soon enough and would be able to put his mind at ease once and for all...hopefully.
