Chapter 7: Revenge
It's been a week since Michele's duel with Don. She's been in a coma and the only answer anyone can come up with is that the Shadow Game put too much psychological stress on her. Anytime I can find any free time I always spend it with her. I've been trying to contact Ice Master, but no luck. Leyvaten says that in the Duel Monsters Spirit World the Ice Barrier has been closed off. No Spirits have seen or even heard from an Ice Barrier since that last Duel.
"Anything new in the Spirit World?" I asked Leyvaten while I was in the infirmary with Michele.
"Nothing new on the Ice Barrier front," he answered. "But there have been reports of Dark Worlds and Zombie-types acting abnormally. There could be a connection."
"Nick?" Asked Chancellor Yuki as he came into the room. He had a dark purple academy jacket and long brown hair that was a lighter in the middle. "I still need to speak with you." He had been trying to talk to me about the Shadow Game since it happened.
"I'm still busy," I told him, not looking away from Michele.
"Well I guess I should just ask you here." He pulled a chair over.
"What do you want to know?"
"Just what kind of deck the Shadow Duelist used and what his name was."
"His name was Don and—."
"Last name?"
"He never said it. Anyways from what I saw he used a Jurrac deck."
"See, that doesn't work because no one in Duel Academy is registered with a Jurrac deck."
"Well that's just from what I saw. The only monsters I saw him play were Jurracs. Maybe he snuck onto the island."
"We've thought of that. If that's true we'd need extra security. Your friends have all agreed to do it, but we need one more."
"No. I'm not leaving until she wakes up."
"What if he comes back? What if the one who did this to her comes back and you have the chance to stop her?" He put his hand on my shoulder. "I know what it's like to lose a friend and I've done far worse because of it. Please, you're one of the best duelists here and the best Slifer I've seen in a long time."
"If I do I want extended hours to be out of the dorm that I can spend here and I want one period a day that I can spend here."
"If it were only up to me I would say yes, but there are laws to how many days you can miss. I can give you the extra hours, but that's it."
I thought about it for a while. "Fine, but if the first one I find doesn't use Jurracs I'm out."
We shook hands. "You start tonight."
That night I didn't find anyone trying to sneak onto the island. Same goes for the next three days. On the third day Alice told me she found a guy and wanted to wait for me to duel him.
When I got there the guy was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and black sweat pants. He had brown eyes and black hair and was about my height.
I didn't even wait to duel him before I punched him across the face. He went down and I got on top of him. "Who the hell are you?" I screamed as I struck him again. "What deck do you have?"
Around the fourth or fifth punch Alice was able to pull me off of him.
"You don't need to know who I am," the guy said. "I use Dark Worlds."
I put my duel disk on. "Get up. There are gonna be some extra rules to this Shadow Game; if I win you guys bring Michele back from wherever the fuck it is you took her."
He got up and wiped the blood from his nose. "And if I win?"
"You get my deck."
"Nick—," Alice said.
"Shut up! Just shut the fuck up! If it means getting Michele back I'll even take her fucking place!"
"I'll take those terms." The shadow duelist said as he put his deck in his duel disk and the smoke rose around us. "I'll go first. And I play one monster face-down in Defense Position and end with two face-downs."
"This better be an actual Dark World deck." I said as I drew my card. "And I Summon my Spear Dragon!" The blue dragon with a long, pointed nose rose on the field. "Now attack! And thanks to his ability when he destroys a Defense Position Monster you still take damage."
"That would be true if I didn't have Renge, Gatekeeper of Dark World. His 2100 Defense points are two hundred more than your dragon's."
Nick: 3800
Shadow Duelist: 4000
"And because of his ability," said the Shadow Duelist, "he goes to Defense Mode when he's done, and if I remember correctly from the last time I faced one he has zero defense points."
Spear Dragon changed to a defensive position and the point gauge showed he was right about it having no Defense Points. "I end with a two face-downs."
"My draw! And I summon Zure, Knight of Dark World! Now destroy that dragon!" The demonic knight took out my dragon in one blow. "Your move."
"I draw! And I play Dragon Ravine! Now I send to the Grave Dragunity Brandistock to send Phalanx from my deck to the Grave. Now I summon Dragunity Legionnaire and Equip him with Brandistock from my Graveyard, but he won't be staying long. I'm sending him to the Graveyard to Special Summon Dragunity Arma Mystletainn!" The green dragon with long dragon wings and short bird wings rose in front of me. "And I'll equip him with Dragunity Brandistock. Then I play Dragon Mastery so he gains 500 and I can equip him with the Dragunity Pilum in my hand! Now thanks to the equipped dragon's effects he can attack you directly twice at half damage! Don't do a fatal blow yet, Mystletainn, I want him alive." Mystletainn punched the Shadow Duelist across the face and then kicked him in the stomach before flying back to me.
Nick: 3800
Shadow Duelist: 1400
"I end with a face-down."
The Shadow Duelist spit out some blood and said, "I draw! And I play Dark World Lightning! So I'll destroy the card you just set and discard Sillva, Warlord of Dark World!" The creature that rose was a humanoid monster with black, leathery skin and bony strips of armor all over. He had two long bones sticking out of his wrists. "Then I play Dark World Dealings so we each draw then discard one card." After he drew he said, "I think I'll discard Kahkki, Guerilla of Dark World, and because of his effect I get to destroy one monster on the field, and I choose that Mystletainn! Now I play The Gates of Dark World!" My ravine crumbled and double doors two stories tall rose behind the Shadow Duelist. "I use its effect to remove Kahkki and discard Reign-Beaux, Overlord of Dark World!" The monster had a muscular torso and a serpent tail instead of legs. He was carrying a staff with a black handle and gold blade at the top. "Now attack my minions!"
"I play Threatening Roar!" A blood-curdling scream came from my trap card that stopped his monsters in their tracks. "None of your monsters can attack for the rest of the turn."
"Your move."
"Nick!" Called Alice.
"I'll be fine!" I barked. "Just go get Chancellor Yuki!"
"But—."
"I said go! Just do what I tell you!"
She ran off.
"Now," I said. "My draw! I summon Dragunity Dux! And with his ability I equip him with the Dragunity Phalanx from my Graveyard! Now with Phalanx's effect I can un-equip and Special Summon him. Now I tune him with Dux to Synchro Summon Dragunity Knight – Gae Bulg!" The beautiful white dragon with a white armored knight rose behind me. "Now I'll use Dragon Mastery to equip him with the Brandistock from my hand! Now attack that Reign-Beaux! And with his effect I can remove the Dragunity Primus Pilus you had me discard from play. Now go, Bright Knight Spear!" The white dragon launched itself through the Reign-Beaux and the knight slashed at the Shadow Duelist's back to finish him.
"Not all Shadow Duelists are as trustworthy as I am," said the Shadow Duelist before he dropped to the floor. "Your test is done and your wish has been granted."
"What test?" I grabbed him by his shirt.
"We haven't been using our full strength. Only one more is left until you see what the full strength of a Shadow Duelist really is. Your friend shall be awake soon, but if you made the deal with anyone else it wouldn't happen. Re–," he coughed up some blood. "Remember that, Dragon Boy." He changed just before I could ask him what he meant by, "Dragon Boy".
Chancellor Yuki and Alice were back soon, and the second they showed up I left so I could be there when Michele woke up.
I waited an hour before Michele finally opened her eyes. "Nick?" She said weakly. "Where am I?"
"School infirmary. You passed out after beating that Shadow Duelist."
"I–I didn't pass out. They needed me."
"Who?"
"The Ice Barriers. They were at war with the Dark Worlds. There was a barrier and no one was able to get through to help them."
"So you helped them beat the Dark Worlds?"
"No." She tried to sit up.
"Save your energy. It's the middle of the night, you need to sleep some more." I tried to put my hand on her shoulder, but she moved and I accidentally got to second base. "Sorry!" I yelled as my hand shot away.
"You never change. You've always been nervous like that around me."
"You know why." I pulled her in for a kiss.
"I'm not the one who saved the Ice Barrier. Your Dragunities did."
