Infernokit

"Catch him!" Squirrelflight shouted.
"I'm trying!" Dovewing replied.
I had so much energy I couldn't contain it, I was bouncing all around the nursery, today was the day Dovewing's kits and I would become apprentices and I was excited. A little too excited.

While they were fruitlessly trying to pin me down, Bramblestar came in. "What's going-?" was all he could get out before I bounced off his head and started running between his legs. "Infernokit! Calm down before I decide you're too immature to become an apprentice!"

I immediately sat down on my haunches. "Yes, Father."
"Thanks, Bramblestar." Squirrelflight went over to start to lick my fur flat. "I don't know what I'd do without you.
"He's got an abundance of energy, that's for sure." Bramblestar said with a purr, and then added sarcastically, "I wonder where he got it from. I'm going to gather the clan soon, so you'd better get those kits ready." He walked out and I endured some more licking from my mother until my fur was flat. As soon as she turned away, I shook my fur and fluffed it up a bit again. Squirrelflight sighed in exasperation and went to flatten my fur again.
"I feel sorry for his mentor." Dovewing purred.
"At least he'll be someone else's problem after today!" Squirrelflight said. "I'm not sure how much more of this I can take!"
"You won't just forget about me, will you?!" I asked her.
"Of course not," she told me, "I'll always keep you in my heart, even if you're a naughty little kit!" She bumped me with her muzzle and I laughed a bit at that.
"I can't wait to be an apprentice!" I practically shouted.
That's when I heard Bramblestar's voice from outside.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the high ledge to hear my words!"
I managed to control myself and walked calmly out into camp with my nest mates.
"Infernokit, Maplekit, Yellowkit, step forward, please."
the three of us stepped up, excitement in our eyes.
"You have all reached the age of six moons, and are ready to be apprentices. From this day until you receive your warrior names, you will be known as Infernopaw, Maplepaw, and Yellowpaw. Infernopaw, your mentor will be Dovewing. Dovewing, you have shown wisdom and bravery, and I expect you to pass on all you know to Infernopaw." Bramblestar said, Dovewing looked shocked, but came up to touch my nose anyway. "You're not the apprentice I was expecting, but I'll do my best to teach you ." she purred.

"Rosepetal, you have shown kindness and wisdom, and you will mentor Maplepaw, Berrynose, you have shown bravery and loyalty to the clan, you will mentor Yellowpaw. Pass on what you know to your apprentices." The new mentors went to touch noses with their apprentices. The clan cheered our new names, "Infernopaw! Maplepaw! Yellowpaw!" I could hardly believe I was an apprentice!
Bramblestar dismissed the clan. I immediately went up to Dovewing and started bouncing again.
"What are you going to show me first?" I asked excitedly. "How to catch the biggest mice? How to fight a cat bigger than me? How to fight a cat smaller than me? How to kill a badger? Tell me, tell me, TELL ME!"
Dovewing put a paw on my head to stop my bouncing. "I think we'd better start with the territory, you need to know your territory before you become a warrior."
I hung my ears in disappointment. "Oh, okay."
"Don't worry," Dovewing told me, "we'll get to the fun stuff soon enough." That made me feel a little better. After walking what felt like all day to my paws, we emerged from the trees and I saw a huge expanse of water which I assumed was the lake the warriors kept talking about. They said it was big, but I didn't expect it to be that big.
Dovewing purred at the look on my face. "You're lucky you get to see it when it's full," she told me. "When I was an apprentice, it was little more than a puddle in the middle of a dip in the ground."

My eyes went wider. "Really?!" I asked. She nodded and we went back into the trees. After some more walking through the forest, I picked up a very unpleasant stench. "What is that?!" I covered my nose with my paw.
"That's Shadowclan." Dovewing told me. "We have to patrol this border to make sure they don't cross it, they can be very sneaky."
An arrogant voice drifted across the border. "At least we're not cowards, trying to talk our way out of every fight."
Dovewing turned towards the border. "Who's there?" She asked. "Show yourself!"
A cat about my size came out of the shadows, he was white with black spots on his back, and black paws, with black rings on his tail. "No one special, just the future best warrior in all of shadowclan. My name's Nightpaw." He walked right up to the border to get a good look at me. "So you're Thunderclan's new apprentice, huh? Wow they must be getting really desperate if they let someone like you become an apprentice, you're so scrawny you wouldn't last five seconds in a real battle, and you look like a kittypet!" He sniffed me then recoiled. "You smell like a kittypet! Is Thunderclan really that desperate?"
"Just you watch!" I told him. "I'm going to be the best warrior in any clan ever!"
