May was sitting on the hill her arms resting on her knees. She watched happily as Drew and Harley had one last contest battle before they all left for the contest. Solidad walked up behind May and sat next to her.
"So... How you doing?"
"I'm doing great." She said happily.
Solidad didn't say anything and just watched May worriedly.
"What? You don't believe me?"
"It's just kind of hard to swallow. I could tell that Brendan mattered a lot to you, and he left. It looks like he left you crying too. Until you kissed Drew, and just... everything turned around? Could you see where I'm coming from?"
"Yeah" May said. She was still focusing on the battle. "That's right."
"How?"
"How what?"
"How can you just turn your whole mood around like that?"
"Because of what I did to Drew, I never had a kiss mean more to me than the one I shared with him."
"Wow so then you must really like him then."
"Like him? I love him." May turned to face Solidad. She was smiling at her and getting slightly excited. "I knew it the minute I kissed him."
"Um... May... Listen, I know you may have known Drew all during your Hoenn adventures and at Kanto as well, but falling in love with just a kiss?"
"It's all it took. Do you know what I felt from that kiss?"
"I could probably imagine..."
May stood up and looked down to Solidad, before excitedly saying. "Nothing."
"Excuse me, nothing?"
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to break it off with Drew though, I will tell him after the contest of course so I don't ruin his concentration."
"Break it off? But didn't you say your in love?" Solidad looked up at her confused.
"I am in love, and not 'I love you' 'I love you too' I mean I deeply care, and would do anything for him. I willing to fight for him, to find him. I am in love with Brendan Birch."
Solidad looked in awe and surprise at May, the confidence and sincerity in her voice, scared her yet she respected it. May felt elated, she never felt better ever since that kiss. To admit that she loves Brendan. It felt natural, it felt good, it felt... right.
"I... Brendan? But didn't he leave you?"
"Something about him seemed off. I need to see him again, I need to find him. I'm sure if we talked again. It would be hard to go on without him you know? Once you met that special person, it's hard to live knowing they're out there and they are the only one you care about."
"May I don't know."
"You know the funny thing is. He would probably find me. We have this thing, were no matter what. We would run into each other. Almost as if it was destiny that we would be together."
"But what if he doesn't love you?"
"Maybe that's why he left, because he does." May looked up at the sky. "Now I get it." She whispered.
"Get what?"
"Do you believe in love at first sight Solidad?"
"I... really don't know."
"I bet Brendan does. He has been in love with me since we first met actually."
"How do you know?"
"Because he told me. He told me before he even learned my name. He has told me everyday since I traveled with him. After all..." She smiled at him. "I'm his very strange girl."
"I see." Solidad brought herself to smile, almost matching May's.
The four coordinators left within the hour. May was happy and bubbly. Solidad though, was in between. She was happy for May, but at the same time what about Drew. He always wanted May, and now...
The contest was going to be held soon. May broke the rules a little, and snuck a peek at the audience. She scanned the hall looking for him, but she didn't have enough time to get a good luck as crew and such were walking down, and if they were to catch her...
May went back to the waiting room and waited and watched the appeals until her turn. She didn't care at all about the contest strangely. She just couldn't wait for it to be over. It would be perfect. He would be there waiting and everything would be better than normal. Hopefully.
It was May's turn in the contest. Since her mind was else where, she failed to get into the next round. She didn't mind that much, she was just waiting for it to be over. Honestly though, she didn't want Drew to win. Not to be spiteful, but when she tells him that it won't work out between them, she didn't want to ruin his victory with her bad news. Drew made it to the next round but lost in the first battle he had.
"Sorry about the loss Drew." May said when Drew returned.
"Nothing to get upset over." He went up to her and tried to kiss her, but she turned her face away from him.
"We need to talk Drew."
May had slipped through the back door to the contest hall. She waited a while before leaving. She told goodbye to everyone, including Drew. Her nerves were on end though. She really hoped Brendan did change his mind and was waiting for her outside of the building. Just like in her first contest. She paced around a bit. She fought down her nerves. She pushed open the door. It was dark all ready. The one light illuminated most of the area around her. She stepped out and looked around.
No one was there.
What could she say. She never really expected him there. She hoped, but never expected. She now had to find him somewhere. Maybe that fisherman guy at the lake would know something...
May turned around and started walking away.
"What are you doing here?" May could barely hear Drew say, he sounded a bit irritated. Whoever he was talking to, it probably didn't matter her. She just kept walking.
"I was bored, and I decided to watch a contest..."
She stopped. Her heart began racing. She looked in the direction that the voices originated from. Could it really be?
May walked slowly toward that spot. She walked around the edge of the building to find Drew and Brendan. Drew turned around and gave a quick glare at her a bit then walked away. Leaving May alone with Brendan. He stared at her intently.
"So." May said, she made herself monotone. "What are you doing here? What happened to the Lake of Rage?"
"I gave it up. I thought about it all day. I thought about you all day. The way we said goodbye, that wasn't the right way to do it so..."
"Are you here to say goodbye properly then?"
"No."
"Hmm." She walked up to him coldly. She looked into his eyes. She could could see the regret and sadness that filled them. She had to put them to rest. "I finally figured it out. "
"What did you figure out?" He asked.
"Why you always call me such a very strange girl."
"Oh? And why would that be perchance?"
"Because you love me."
Brendan smiled at her. "I'm sorry though, for pretty much leaving you on the path crying."
"I will accept your apology as long as you accept mine for not realizing it sooner. No matter how uneven it is. However I am curious, why did you leave me?"
"I might have overheard a conversation in which you admit you like Drew and he asked you to join him and his troop of coordinators."
"Oh? So your a sneak?"
"I do it for a living, that's how I research pokemon. You should have seen it coming."
May laughed. "Well I'm guessing you didn't hear the entire discussion. I never wanted to go with him. I did like him, but I also liked you."
"So what happened between you two?"
"I had to end it. I kissed him, and it meant nothing. As opposed to when you kissed me before and... It just made sense that you were the one. I was prepared to hunt you down. Your the one I could spend all my nights thinking about, and all my days searching for. It's silly but that's how I feel about you."
She enjoyed the smile that he gave her. It felt comfortable, warm, it felt sincere.
"So now Brendan. I will ask you, what do you think of me?"
"You know the answer to that May. I think your a ve-"
Brendan yielded as May went up to him and forced her lips on to his. Softly. Lovingly. They breathed their souls and their love into each other in that kiss. That kiss, hard but soft, fiery but cool, a split second but also forever. Her lips spoke of love. His spoke of it forever.
"A kiss is a lovely trick." May said this time, she giggled a bit, she took his hat to reveal his short black hair, and she put it on. "Designed by nature, to stop speech when it becomes superfluous. Didn't you tell me that once upon a time?"
"I recall something like that being uttered." He couldn't stop smiling.
"So how about we go find Wally. I met you again, and I want to travel with you again. You promised that if I wanted to, I could join your group, and guess what?"
"You want to?"
"I need to?"
"But it's not my group May." Brendan allowed May to wrap his hands around her as she backed into him. "It's ours."
May silently chuckled as she leaned her head back into his chest.
"So you kissed Drew?" Brendan asked amused.
"Yeah I did." May said childishly. "What are you going to do about it?"
Brendan laughed, he tightened his embrace of her. "I'll never let you go, you very strange girl."
