Chapter 7
(Emmett looks in the mirror in his bedroom to look at the damage done to his face. He saw his swollen lip and gently touched it, wincing at the pain he felt. He sighed deeply and wondered how the hell he was going to explain this to his mother. It's like she noticed everything. Every little thing. Sometimes that was a good thing, but usually he didn't like that. He thought of putting some powder or foundation from his mom's makeup box on, but he figured everyone would find out eventually. He didn't want any sympathy from anyone and chances are, he'd get that from Daphne and Melody. He deserved the punch he got from Toby and whole lot more. But it was his own fault that Toby attacked him. His and Simone's. He didn't know how bad she still felt but he wasn't gonna ask. He wanted to stay as far away from her as possible. He sighs deeply as he thinks of the one woman he would love to see. He would gladly take a hundred beatings if it meant she forgave him for everything. He was aware they'd have a long road to get to where they used to be. But he didn't want to go back. He wanted to go forward)
(Bay was seventeen years old and he was eighteen. He knew everyone probably thought he was too young to be in love or too young to think of anyone seriously. But he didn't care. Ever since he knew Bay, he knew she was it for him. She completed him. He hoped he completed her before everything happened. He knew Bay probably thought she had her whole life ahead of her, but he hoped he was included in that life. He was into Daphne over the years, yes, but he moved on when Daphne didn't feel the same way. She was fine with that. There was never any other woman like Bay Kennish. He knew they would have to talk soon like they did before. He was actually surprised that she didn't yell at him, but he wouldn't blame her in the least if she did. She had every right to. He was prepared to listen to Bay and to get hit by her if necessary. He had no problem with that)
(After he finished getting ready for school, he didn't hear the knock at his bedroom door, but he did notice it opening. He looked to see who it was, revealing Melody. She smiles at her son and he does the same. Her smile quickly fades when she sees his swollen lip and immediately goes to him)
Melody: "What happened?"
(Emmet shrugs and shakes his head)
Emmett: "Nothing."
(Melody raises her hand to his cheek and moves his face so she can see his bruise better. Emmett tries to break free from her grasp. She finally lets go)
Melody: "Who did this to you?"
Emmett: (shakes his head) "No one. Just drop it."
Melody: (shakes her head) "No, I won't drop it. Someone hit you and I want to know who it was."
(Emmett backs up a few steps and glares at his mother)
Emmett: "Let it go. It's over and done with."
(Melody studies her son's facial expressions)
Melody: "It couldn't have been Bay. She may be pissed at you, but I can't picture her doing it."
Emmett: (tilts his head) "It wasn't Bay."
(When Emmett tries to walk away, Melody gently grabs his arm, causing him to look at her angrily)
Emmett: "What?!"
Melody: "I want to help you, but I can't if you don't tell me who did this to you."
Emmett: (glares at her) "I don't want your help. Besides, I deserved it."
(Melody steps back a little in shock at what Emmett just said)
Melody: "Why would you say something like that?"
Emmett: (shrugs) "Because." (sighs) "Mom, please don't worry. I'm not in any danger or trouble or anything. Now, please, I need to get to school."
(Melody looks into her son's eyes and it's like he's pleading with her to drop it. She sighs deeply and looks down. She looks back up and can tell he's not going to tell her anything more. She moves out of his way and signals for him to get his things so he can go to school. He gives his mother a peck on the cheek before leaving for school. She puts her hands on her hips and closes her eyes as she looks down)
(At Carlton, Emmett parks his bike and sees Daphne. He debates whether to go say hi or walk away. The decision is made for him when she sees him and walks to him. They wave at each other and smile. Daphne's smile quickly fades when she sees the bruise on his lip)
Daphne: "What happened?"
Emmett: (shakes his head) "Nothing."
(Daphne studies him before signing again)
Daphne: "Who did it?"
(Emmett looks at Daphne weirdly before shaking his head)
Emmett: "No one."
Daphne: (tilts her head) "Emmett."
Emmett: (shakes his head) "No one for you to worry about."
(Daphne turns her head slightly and thinks for a moment before a thought suddenly comes to her. Her eyes widen and she signals for Emmett to look at her)
Daphne: "Was it Toby?"
(Emmett stares at her for a moment before looking away. He looks at Daphne and tries to look confused)
Emmett: "What? Why the hell would you think it was Toby?"
Daphne: "Because when we got home last night, he was really pissed off and I noticed his hand was red and a little bruised. Between your bruised lip and his hand, it's not that hard to connect the dots. He's been mad for awhile and the way his mood's been lately, I knew it was only a matter of time before something happened."
Emmett: "I didn't say it was Toby, Daphne."
Daphne: (raises her eyebrows) "You didn't have to. It's written all over your face." (sighs) "What happened between you and Toby?"
Emmett: (shakes his head) "Nothing you need to worry about."
(Daphne stops Emmett from walking away, causing him to look at her angrily)
Emmett: "What?!"
(Daphne looks at her friend sadly and tries to help him)
Daphne: "I know Toby is mad at you, but in all fairness, he wasn't that serious about Simone."
Emmett: (shrugs) "So what? Daphne, he may not have had serious feelings for her, but that doesn't change the fact that he cared for her. Toby was just trying to stop some of the pain when he hit me. Trust me, I've had worse."
Daphne: "It doesn't give him the right to hit you."
Emmett: "Yeah, well, like I said, I deserved it."
(Emmett readjusts his backpack before looking at Daphne again)
Emmett: "Look, I gotta go. See you later."
(Before Daphne can object, Emmett walks away. She shakes her head, wishing she could do something to help her friend. Meanwhile at Buckner, Bay is at her locker when she sees Toby walking in her direction. As he approaches her, she smiles at her brother. He briefly smiles)
Bay: "Hey."
Toby: (nods briefly) "Hey."
(Bay debates how to ask her question to her brother, knowing it'll tick him off, but she deices to get it out)
Bay: "What's wrong with your hand?"
Toby: (confused) "What do you mean?"
(Bay folds her arms and tilts her head seriously)
Bay: "Toby, don't try to deny it. Mom and dad may not have noticed, but you know I notice everything. Who did you hit?"
(Toby looks at Bay with an annoyed face)
Toby: "Why do you automatically assume I started it?"
Bay: (glares at Toby) "Because I know you too well. I know when you're pissed off and when that happens, you get this look in your eyes, which you have right now."
Toby: (rolls his eyes) "Do you have to notice everything, Bay?"
Bay: (sighs deeply) "I'm gonna find out sooner or later what happened, so you minus well tell me."
Toby: (seriously) "Just drop it, sis." (sighs) "I gotta go."
(Bay watches as Toby walks away. She shakes her head)
Bay: "What the hell is going on with you, Toby? I know you're not exactly happy with Emmett, but, did something happen between you two since you and I last talked?"
(Bay thinks for a minute before she speaks)
Bay: "I think I'll talk to Daphne and see if she knows anything. Depending on what she says will make my decision." (sighs) "I hope you know something, Daphne."
