But I Do Love You
Section 7
Jack sat on the porch of the old farm house the Harvesters resided in. He was shucking corn in the midday heat and wore only a white muscle tee, jeans, and a cowboy hat. If the Mall Rats could only see him now. They would have gotten a good laugh at the sight of him. He looked more like a cowboy than the scientist who cracked the formula for the virus antidote.
He threw the last ear of corn into the bag, standing up and stretching. He took off his hat and wiped his brow. He looked around him. The Harvesters lorded over a huge piece of land, a farm that had been in the leader's family for generations, with minimal crops and a few animals, but much larger than Ellie and Alice's farm. Jack winced at the thought of Ellie. He really missed her.
The Harvesters had harbored Jack, no questions asked, after he had escaped from the Chosen en route to the slave faction. Something which he had been extremely grateful for. But, being only about 45 miles from the city, he knew the Chosen were still in control. And he had no intentions of going back to the city until things were safe and under control again.
Jack was about to drag the bag of corn back into the house to Virginia, the Harvesters cook, when he saw a group of figures approaching in the distance. He put a hand over his eyes and squinted. He could just make out what appeared to be a tall, blonde girl and 3 guys. He calmly walked to the right side of the porch and tugged three times on the rope of the alarm bell. Then he grabbed a nearby shovel, holding it up, ready to defend himself and the farm against the intruders.
As they got closer, he could see each of them more clearly. It was obvious the girl was in charge, whoever they were. She stood straight and confident, a look of determination on her face. It was then Jack realized there was something familiar about her, but he couldn't quite put a finger on it. Lowering the shovel, he cautiously made his way down the front steps.
"Hello! We mean you no harm! We come in peace!" the girl shouted in greeting. Jack had to shield his eyes in the bright sunlight, and he could just barely see her. She wore a black trench coat even though it was hot as all hell that day, and her blonde hair was pulled up in knots on her head. Jack stood at the base of the steps as they finally reached him.
"Hello," Jack said, tipping his hat in welcoming to the visitors. He smiled, still squinting against the sunlight. It was making his eyes hurt. "Come up onto the porch, out of the sunlight, and we can introduce ourselves properly." The girl nodded, and the foursome followed him onto the porch, where he put the shovel down and tossed his hat aside. He turned to face them.
"Jack?!" the girl gasped. Jack's eyes widened as he looked at her. He knew her.
"Amber?" he sputtered in shock.
"Oh, my gosh!" she exclaimed. They hugged tightly, both laughing in joy. The three boys that were with her looked at each other in bewilderment.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were dead!" Jack asked, stepping back and looking at her in amazement.
"It's a long story," she said, smiling. Just then, Tommy and the other Harvesters came running around the side of the house.
"Jack! What is it?!" Tommy exclaimed, vaulting the porch railing. He eyed the four strangers, as Amber let go of Jack and turned around.
"I thought we had trespassers, but . . ." Jack trailed off, at a loss for words at the time. Amber stepped forward, putting her hand out.
"Hi! We're from the Gaians. I'm their leader, Eagle, and an old friend of Jack's, among other things," she said cheerfully. Tommy shook her hand, a smile growing across his face. "I'm so sorry for barging in like this . . ."
"Oh, no! It's okay!" Tommy cut her off. "Any friend of Jack's is a friend of the Harvesters. I'm Tommy, the leader of this tribe." Tommy looked past Amber to Jack. "Jack, why don't you take our guests inside? Show them to the kitchen. Virginia can get them something cool to drink. I'll wash up quickly, and then we can all talk." Jack nodded obediently.
"Come this way," Jack said, opening the front door for them. He stared at Amber in awe as she walked past him, grinning, before he followed the group inside.
