On today's chapter: Who is really staying in Lavi's manor?
Alfie sat on Lavi's bed waiting for him to show up. He had been quite a bit skeptical over Inma's story but he realized it was similar to his. Though Alfie was sure he was no thought about the day he woke up in Martha's home; she had been so terrified. No one thought Alfie would survive. He had to admit he felt envious that he hadn't gotten his memories back yet and Inma had. Alfie felt like a large part of him was dead and that he might never get it back. Was it really that bad?
Alfie had made a lot of friends and learned a lot throughout the years. His past life couldn't have been so meaningful if his parents never tried to look for him. Surely with his strange looks he would have been found fast. Maybe his past family was a large one, willing to lose a child or two. Alfie thought that was the case for sure and yet, he remembered guarding that paper close to his heart as he fell to the floor. Maybe that paper led somewhere important.
Lavi was a detective… maybe he could help?
He always carried that old slip of paper with him. It had been covered in blood and drenched in water when he woke up but he could still read some of it. Not that it mattered, he had read it over a thousand times by now. He had it memorized completely.
"What are you thinking about?"
"Oh Lavi! I don't know."
"How do you not know what you're thinking about?" Lavi said as he sat next to Alfie.
"It's weird… I was thinking about my past."
"That's not very weird… have you ever tried asking around?"
"No not really. I figure if anyone knew who I was they'd recognize me. I'm not exactly an average looking person."
"Oh shush, I think you're adorable."
Allen turned away. No one had ever called him adorable. Martha had once said he wasn't ugly but he wasn't sure what to take from that.
"T-thanks…"
"So… Cross said you were helping out with the case, is there anything you'd like me to explain?"
"Hmmm I hadn't really thought of any questions but from what I know, you guys are looking for the Princess of Digrayma."
"Well, not just the princess. Honestly, I don't think she's alive, Even if she is I don't think she's the same kind caring princess everyone wants her to be."
"Then why hold interviews?"
"It's more of a front, to make it look like we're looking for her. Behind the scenes we investigate leads on her to find one of her possessions."
"So you don't care about the girl?"
"Well… I wouldn't say that. It's just that the kingdom is at stake."
Allen thought about the possession they were looking for. He wondered what exactly it was that had the power to save the kingdom.
"Do you think Inma is the real deal?" Lavi interrupted Allen's thoughts.
"She could be. They have similar traits and her story matches up with what you guys know."
"Hm."
"Lavi… What item are you looking for?"
"It's a pendant… It's difficult to explain right now without showing you the book."
"What does it do?"
"It… it summons dragons."
"What!?"
"Look I know it sounds weird but without the pendant we can't win this war."
"Why would you even leave it in the possession of a little girl?" Allen shouted at this point.
"Well if it was on the king they would have found it. Obviously our tactic worked."
The white haired boy was in disbelief. A pendant… that summoned dragons. It was given to a little girl?! Allen broke into laughter.
"Allen, are you okay?" Lavi was the one confused now.
"You people really are brilliant. This is so much fun."
Even though Allen was adorable, in that moment he sounded a bit like a lunatic. Truth be told, Allen didn't find much pleasure in putting more importance in an object over a human being but the thought of saving a whole kingdom from destruction seemed hilarious to him. Allen, a mere orphan, helping find a legendary item. He had read about it in books but he didn't believe it was an actual thing.
"I'm helping you look for the pendant of Defina?"
"So you've heard of it?"
"I read a lot, Lavi."
Lavi nodded. Allen was an odd child but not unpleasantly so.
Meanwhile, in another wing of the mansion, Lenalee was listening in on their other mysterious visitors. The girl with bandages around her eyes seemed so calm in a strange home.
"With this I can see my brother right?"
"Yes of course, My lady"
"And my father…" Her quiet voice barely reached Lenalee's ears.
"Helena, you do realize your family is no more."
"I know but… I'd like to pay my respects."
"Of course, my lady."
"Were they buried next to mama?"
"Yes, after the bodies were investigated they were buried at the royal tombs."
"What will happen once I meet uncle?"
"You will possibly be welcomed with open arms and be expected to continue your studies, eventually becoming queen."
"I don't want to be queen though…"
"It is your duty."
"I see…"
Lenalee couldn't dismiss this as mere acting; she felt a sinking feeling in her chest as she let the feelings sink in. Tomorrow morning she would tell Lavi to accept Inma as Helena.
In the room faced away from Lenalee's eyes, a cruel smirk found its way onto the assistant's face.
Thank you for reading and being patient ^~^ To be continued~
