Fade in

Gambit had been driving for a few hours and kept turning in his seat to check on Rogue, who was fast asleep in the passenger seat. She'd given him the basics on how to get to the school, but the two mutants were getting closer now and Remy wasn't sure at the next stop sign if he should turn left or right. The only thing to see at this stage were trees and more road...come to think of it, Remy hadn't seen much else for possibly the last hour.

Knowing he would have to wake Rogue up, Remy hated the thought and debated picking his own way to go, but if they went the wrong way...well, he'd never hear the end of that - looking at Rogue for a minute longer, Remy sighed and began to softly shake her awake.

"Chère ...Chère?"

"Mmmm...wha...what Gam...bi...t?" muttered Rogue in a sleepy voice, not even bothering to stir in her seat.

"Remy sorry he had to wake you, Chère, but, which way do we go?" noticing Rogue peeking at him through her eyelashes, Remy pointed at the stop sign.

"Mmm...what time is it?"

Without even opening her eyes, Rogue rubbed them as she sat up, unable to see Remy's confused look. "T'is about 1pm, why?"

"It's an easy way to make sure you're going the right way. Well, at this time...let's see...we're close enough to the school, and it's a nice day out..." Rogue peered up at the sky and paused, listening. "Well...I say you'll know which way to go...right about-" tapping her finger on the dashboard, Rogue smiled as, just then, a huge explosion sounded, to the left of the stop sign.

Remy shot his right arm out in front of Rogue in a protective manner and swiftly charged a card in his other hand; ready for a fight. Even if the blast sounded quite a way away, Gambit wasn't taking any chances.

Shocked at the speed of Gambit's reaction, Rogue had not expected him to react so protectively towards her...and she certainly wasn't going to complain about how close he was to her either, cause damn did that man smell good! Unable to stop herself thinking about how much she would like for Gambit to be that little bit closer, Rogue couldn't help letting out a small laugh.

"Easy there Suagh, it's from the school." Rogue placed a hand on the arm in front of her, causing Gambit to look her in the eye. She had a huge smile on her face and Gambit couldn't understand what was so funny. He shot her another look but Rogue looked out towards the trees. "It's a nice day outside...besides, Logan trains us outside most of the time," explained Rogue, pausing to think for a second, "but by how quiet that explosive sounded...well, I guess Scott is doing the training today; Logan must have gone out."

"How do you know that?" Gambit queried, still looking at Rogue and still protecting her.

She smirked. "Because, if Logan is training, you'd know it. Let's just say, he has more bang to his training. So," turning to look at Gambit again, Rogue perked an eyebrow at the charged card still shimmering in the other mutant's hand, "why don't you put that card out, before you blow the both of us up?"

Relaxing a little, Gambit put the card away, but before he moved he looked at Rogue again: they were so close now and Gambit finally noticed that the way his arm stretched over her meant he could feel the rise and fall of Rogue's chest.

"Just fo' your information Chère, the card won' explode in my hands. Gambit's powers cannot hurt him."

"Well then, I'll remember that if ever I take your power," replied Rogue, with a wink. She knew she shouldn't have said that as soon as Gambit started to move closer to her.

"You, Chère, can take my power." Leaning his face towards Rogue, Gambit locked his eyes onto hers. He wanted to kiss her...no, not wanted to: he was going to kiss her...to hell with Rogue's powers. Gambit needed a kiss from her. "You can take it, anytime you want," he whispered, huskily, feeling Rogue's warm breath on his face, noticing as her breathing began to quicken. And for a moment, Gambit really thought that Rogue had finally given in; that he was going to get that kiss...

But she pushed him away at the last second, and again, couldn't help but smile.

"Easy there, Swamp Rat. I'm not having you kiss me: I'd end up knocking you out and then I'd have to get out of this car, drag your ass out of that side, then back into this side and then I would have to drive up to the school. And I am not up for that today. So: go left." Rogue said, cocking her head as she looked at Gambit.

"One of these days, this Cajun's gonna get that kiss, Chère," he said, with a sexy grin.

She may think he was joking, but Remy could not have been more serious.

Not much later, Gambit's eyes were drawn to the impressive gate that barred their way, but he didn't hesitate to ring the buzzer, so within a few seconds, the gates began to open.

They hadn't made it far down the long drive way though, when a loud bang was heard, accompanied by a blue flash coming from the top of the hood of the car, and a second later Nightcrawler dropped on top of the hood. This caused Gambit to slam on the brakes and Nightcrawler stared at him - the X-Man hadn't spotted Rogue yet.

"Baise-Moi!" [Fuck Me] yelled Gambit; staring back at the blue man crouching on the car.

Seeming just as scared as Gambit himself, Nightcrawler raised his hands as a sign of peace - he never liked to upset people. "Sorry! I did not mean to drop on zis car...I vas just-" he said, pointing now to the left. But before he could explain himself, Rogue spoke up, excited to see a friend.

"Kurt!" She cried out, with a big smile. The cause Kurt to look over to the passenger seat and spotted his friend.

"Rogue! You're back early!" with a blue flash, Kurt had disappeared from on top of the car and with another flash he appeared at Rogue's side of it.

She jumped out, hugging him. "What are you doing here? I haven't seen you since that thing with Striker!"

The name made both Nightcrawler and Gambit flinch. Noticing this, Rogue decided not to pay any mind to it now.

"Vell...I vent to Transylvania for a time and lived vith the Monks...but after a vhile, I got homesick; ze Professor had said I alvays had a place here, so here is vhere I came. But...to my surprise, you vere not here?"

Rogue couldn't look Kurt in the eye; he sounded genuinely disappointed that she hadn't been home. "Yeh...a lot of stuff happened. I just needed some time to get away..."

"Ya, I know vat zis is like...but, anyvay, who is your friend?"

"Oh!" turning to face her companion, Rogue smiled, "this is Gambit." She pointed to him.

"Ahhh! So you must be ze man zat helped Rogue? Ze one zat ze whole school is talking about?" flashing over to Gambit's side of the car, Kurt took the other man's hand and shook it vigorously. "Nice to meet you!"

Gambit couldn't help but smile. "Same here."

Looking back at Rogue, Kurt was still shaking Gambit's hand as he spoke up again, "vell, Rogue: first Logan saves you; zen me; and now zis man? You're just being saved by all types of men."

"I don' need a man to save me every time," challenged Rogue, putting her hands on her hips.

"Ya, ya. I know zat." Kurt looked back at Remy. "She can kick some ass, let zem tell you! Zat is one female you don't vant to tick off!"

Just then, another explosion rang out across the grounds.

"These are Scott's sessions, huh? So where is Logan?" Rogue asked, which caused Kurt to let go of Remy's hand before teleporting back over to her.

"He took a few of ze younger X-Men out on a mission. Bobby vas one of zem," shaking his head as he answered, Kurt frowned. "Let me tell you, he has gotten very rude! And he does not listen!"

"When did he ever?" Rogue replied with a smile. "So, are you helping with the sessions now?"

At the change of topic, Kurt smiled widely, "ya! I like vorking vith Scott: he is not as hard...and does not call me names...speaking of helping, I better get back to it. Vas good to see you Rogue," giving his fellow X-Man another huge smile, Kurt waved a hand, "ve vill catch up later!" And with another flash he was gone.

Shaking her head in amusement, Rogue looked back over at Gambit, letting herself back into the car as the other mutant slid into his seat.

"So...dat was one of your friends?" he asked, looking at Rogue.

"Ya. Kurt's really nice," she smiled at the thought of her friend. "But he's had a hard life."

"You said you all ran in with Striker?" with a serious look, Gambit couldn't help changing the conversation.

But when she asked him about it, Rogue could tell that Gambit was uncomfortable by the expression he had on his face, "ya...and from the look of it, so did you?" Rogue had seen that same look on Kurt when she had dared to ask the teleporter about it once.

"Long story Chère..."

"Same here. Talk about it later, right?" She did not want to push it: when it came to Striker, she knew not to push it...nothing good ever came from that man.

Smiling, Gambit started the car. "You know Gambit too well." He was glad that she didn't want answers then and there, just the mention of Striker's name brought back a whole bunch of bad memories to Gambit: memories that he didn't want to think about right now.

"In case you didn't know..." looking at Gambit, Rogue caught his eye: "he's dead." She was glad she had said at least that: the way that a smile flashed across his face showed Rogue that Gambit had not known.

When the car was parked up, the two mutants got out, both grabbing from the back seat their own small bag. But on the way to the front door, Rogue stopped when Gambit slipped on his shades.

"Swamp Rat! You said you would leave them off around me," Rogue exclaimed, crossing her arms in front of her chest as she shot Gambit a warning glare.

"Gambit don' want anyone to be uneasy around him...not on the first day."

Smiling, Rogue shook her head anyway and held out her hand. "Give them here." And Gambit could easily tell by her expression that there was no talking Rogue out of this one, so he took off his sunglasses, handing them to Rogue, watching uneasily as she tucked them away into her bag. "You'll get them back later tonight."

"Speaking like a teacher already, Chère," smiled Gambit, as he followed Rogue through the front doors.

His smile turned to shock immediately: there was no way he would believe that this was a school. Following Rogue's example, Gambit put his bag down and walked into the middle of the entrance hall. "This sure is a nice place Rogue," he muttered in awe.

"It's home," replied Rogue with a smile, "and it's good to be back."

"Rogue!" hearing her name called, Rogue turned to see who it was and her face broke into a bigger smile.

"Tabitha! Jubilee!" Gambit watched, almost shocked, as Rogue ran over to her friends and gave them both a hug. There were a few people who came in through the door with the two girls, but they made their way through the entrance hall and disappeared down the hallways, leaving the four mutants alone.

"Rogue, how have you been?" excitedly, Tabitha "Boom Boom" Smith started jabbering away at her friend. "You have to tell us everythin...g..." her words petered off, as the blonde looked past Rogue, giving Gambit a once over. "Hellooooo...who are you?"

Rogue noticed the way that Boom Boom was looking at Gambit - like a piece of juicy meat - and caught the man smirking.

"Name is Gambit. ...Remy," Remy corrected, catching Rogue's look as he walked over to the three. When he made it over to them though, Rogue noticed that he had obviously taken his shades out of her bag: he was wearing them again.

{I'm gonna break those damned things...} she thought, shooting Remy a glare, but she let it go otherwise; it was easy to understand why he would leave them on, but she just hated seeing him with them. Rogue had got used to those devilishly charming eyes of his.

"Remy, it's nice to meet you." Jubilee was always one to make friends and stuck her hand out to Remy as she introduced herself; "I'm Jubilee, and this is Tabi-Boom Boom," Tabitha had given Jubilee a sharp nudge in the ribs at the use of her human name - some mutants simply preferred to be known by there alias.

"Ooh! So you're the hunk that helped Rogue!" Boom Boom said with a huge grin on her face as she pointed at him.

"Tabitha!" exclaimed Rogue.

But the other girl simply smiled mischievously, "what Rogue? You were right: he is good looking...and damn," Boom Boom nudged Rogue as she eyed up Remy, "very well built." This only caused Rogue to blush and place her face in her hands, shaking it.

She pulled her face out of her hands to peer at Remy though when he replied.

"My Southern Belle called me good looking, eh?" he caught Rogue's eye with a smile and a wink.

"Quit it Swamp Rat." Rogue shook her head again, but smiled. Damn woman for opening her mouth; he would never let her live that down.

"Aww, listen Jubes: they already have nicknames for each other!" Tabitha winked at her friend as Rogue groaned, rolling her eyes when the two younger girls 'awwed'. Gambit's smile only got bigger: he made a note to talk to these girls later.

Within moments Remy heard another woman's voice from behind them and turned.

"Rogue. I was surprised that you were coming home a few days early."

Rogue turned too and gave the woman a smile - as Remy looked at Rogue, he could tell that she was truly happy here and found himself relaxing at the thought.

"What can I say, Storm? After everything...I guess home is a great place to be." Again, she allowed herself to be hugged; Rogue had missed Storm as much as Logan, the mentor was always someone to talk to. Sure, you always have your friends, but Storm was always someone Rogue knew she could go to, day or night.

"Well. We are more than glad to have you back." With her hands on Rogue's shoulders, Storm smiled, "we missed you." Then her attention turned to the other arrival, and Remy found Storm's smile directed at him. "And you must be Remy Lebeau?" she let go of Rogue and walked over to shake his hand, "it is great to finally meet you."

"Nice to meet you too. Thank for offering for Remy to stay here...and to join the team. Got a bad past...know it pro'ly wasn' easy convincing some people to let Gambit be on the team."

Storm shook her head reassuringly, "any one is welcome here and to a spot on our team, no matter their past." She smiled at Remy and he managed to smile back - he could tell that this woman had a kind heart and that made him a little wary: sometimes it was the people with the kindest hearts you had to worry about; make them made and all hell could break loose. "Well," Storm continued, "I'm sure you two would love to unpack, so I will let you be for now. Remy, you'll find your room downstairs: everything was set up in the hope that you would stay. We felt this room was best suited to you; it is, after all, the only bedroom downstairs so it is quieter and further away from the noise of the younger students. You'll find the nearest point to your room being the other jet exit, but that is hardly used: you won't find many students bothering you." she explained, placing her hands together.

Gambit nodded, liking the sound of it already. "Sounds good, Storm."

"You can call me Ororo," the woman smiled, "now, I'm going to get some class material ready for tomorrow. Rogue; I'm glad you are back, and Remy; it is a pleasure to have you on the team." With that, Ororo left the four mutants alone again.

It wasn't long until Boom Boom spoke up.

"So...we're gonna go. But we'll catch up with you at dinner tonight Rogue? Ok?" Winking at her friend when Rogue nodded, Tabitha linked her arm through Jubilee's. As they walked away, Rogue could easily make out Tabitha and Jubilee's conversation turning to her and Remy.

After a moment of silence, she looked over at Remy. He was watching her expectantly.

"So...up for the grand tour?"

"If you're Remy's tour guide...might just ask for another when this tour's finished," teased Remy with a wink.

In response, Rogue rolled her eyes, "come on Swamp Rat. And take off those damn shades; no one else is around right now!" she commanded, grabbing her bag.

Remy did as he was told, but Rogue couldn't help noticing that every time someone would stop and talk to them, the shades were already back in place; covering Gambit's eyes.

Other than that, Rogue really felt the rest of the day went well: Remy managed to fit in with surprising ease, even jumping in to help Jean when Rogue and him found her cooking alone in the kitchen. Rogue didn't even need to mention how good a cook Remy was, Jean let him take over and managed to get a good conversation flowing between the three of them.

After such a busy day, it was at 10'o'clock that night when Rogue made her way down to Remy's new room.

Within an instant of her knocking, the door had swung open and Remy filled the doorway, "Chère." he greeted with a wink. She rolled her eyes, but was pleased to note that he wasn't wearing his shades.

"You ready to get your ass kicked again, Cajun?" Rogue challenged as she slipped past Remy, letting herself into her opponents room.

"Gambit ain' fond of being kicked...but if it's you doing the kicking..." he let his eyes wander over Rogue's figure with an appreciative look.

Rogue scowled. "Shut up and let's play," she said and sat down at Remy's card table.

Remy smirked and shut the door behind himself.
