Authors Note: Ok, so actually I was confused as to this part, it sort of seemed as though it should have been part of the last chapter but at the same time it seemed like it should have been a chapter of its own.
Let me know what you think.
I turned to go, but Stein stopped me before I turned half way,
"Before you go any further soul, I need you to do one more thing."
"Now what," I said, not caring that I sounded rude. I learned all I needed to know from this place. I couldn't let anything stand in my way.
"You can go ahead," Said stein. "But how do you intend to find the killer if you don't know where Maka is?"
"What do you mean," I said, "Maka is right here."
"Her shell is here," Said Stein, "But her soul is not, in this case, her soul, the real Maka has been stolen, but I sense that there are still traces left of it."
I stared at the still form for a second and turned back to Stein, "What am I supposed to be seeing?" I asked. "I don't have soul perception like Maka does."
"You don't necessarily need soul perception to do what I'm asking." Stein said, "I need you to resonate."
"I need you to find her soul."
I blew out a breath, thinking about something so simple, something we'd done a million times before. Linking our souls together and seeing what the other sees and feeling what the other feels. A mix of roller coaster excitement and fear that would make any normal person want to turn tail and run for the hills.
This time was way different though; there was none of that excitement, only fear. Fear because the constant line that connected the two of us wasn't vibrating with energy anymore, it was still and quiet.
I couldn't ignore that, but I could still pretend that the figure on the table wasn't her. It could just be another poor chick with the same face. If I looked for her and she wasn't there, it would make the idea of losing her a lot more real.
I shook my head.
"I... can't…" I said slowly,
"Can't or won't?" Stein asked with a little hint of a sneer in his voice, "and here I was sure I was working with a weapon dedicated to his meister, not some coward."
Coward?
"You're wrong… I DO care about Maka! Maybe you can switch from weapon to weapon just like that but I won't abandon her, EVER!"
He leaned over so he was eye to eye with me. "Then prove it." He said coldly and stepped back.
I growled and closed my eyes,
Come on Maka, we can't give up yet…
Lets go, Soul Resonance.
