IMPORTANT! I initially put that Brock was going to use Omanyte in the previous chapter, but like a dummy, I started typing without considering that, and I have been having terrible spells of sometimes not knowing what I'm doing. Pretty much, memory lapses. Because of this, I altered the previous chapter only slightly at the very end. I had no idea what I was doing as I started typing this, but I will definitely try not to repeat this!
Anyways! Hi, readers! I am in a slight (but am writing!) writer's block for WAWL and TWIYH, but I have started, so I decided to just update this story while the thoughts come to me! I hope you enjoy! I am not on any kind of hiatus, just slow. Again, this story is a rough adoption of the story it's based on, so it will not follow the original 100%. Just throwing that out for everyone.
Also, I'll stress this again: Sometimes, I make the Pokemon know moves that are not overly powerful at lower levels such as sleep powder, stun spore, etc. It's not like I'm going to teach a newly hatched egg fire blast or overpower moves without a TM. Just a friendly reminder!
Enjoy! (:
Sabrina was honestly a bit nervous because she was going to face her very first gym leader, and one who had a type advantage against Venonat. Still, she was going to do her very best. She didn't want to embarrass herself in front of Ash and the gym leader. She also wanted to establish a trust with Venonat, but she knew she couldn't win every single battle that she participated in. She had to take it one step at a time.
"I, too, just have one Pokemon," said Sabrina calmly as she took out her Pokeball. "I hope you are okay with that."
"I am," agreed Brock as he took out his Pokeball. "No time limit. We battle until one of our Pokemon is unable to fight." He threw out his Pokeball. "Go...Kabuto!" The Pokemon came out of its ball. It was a brownish-yellow crustacean Pokemon and it looked ready for battle. Sabrina had never seen a living specimen and was quite impressed. Ash took out his Pokedex and pointed it at the Pokemon.
"Kabuto, male," started Dexter, "the shellfish Pokemon that is both water and rock type. These Pokemon inhabited the seas some 300 million years ago and their fossils have been found for many years, but have been reanimated only in the recent past. They attack using their sharp claws and can move surprisingly fast despite being a rock Pokemon."
Ash was very much impressed to see a living fossil. He wished that Sabrina had a grass-type move to use against him, but he bet that Kabuto didn't have high special defense. He would just wait and see what happened and wished her the best of luck!
"I choose you...Venonat!" exclaimed Sabrina as she threw the Pokeball out, releasing her fuzzy purple insect. She felt that the best thing she could use was confusion and dodge all attacks that Kabuto would use, which she believed would be mostly physical attacks.
"Ladies first," said Brock in a curious manner.
"I'd rather you make the opening move," said Sabrina so she could get the idea of what Brock was going to do. "Though I appreciate it."
"Very well. Kabuto, use your mud shot!" ordered Brock.
"Bu!" shouted the shellfish as a large squirt of of brown mud was ejected from his "mouth". It started to head towards Venonat and Sabrina said,
"Use disable and stop it!" Venonat jumped into the air and with glowing eyes, he engulfed Kabuto in an aura that prevented him from using his attack any further. Unfortunately, it was enough to hit Venonat and he squeaked as he was hit, but he was able to recover from it very easily since Kabuto had a low special attack power.
"Scratch Venonat!" ordered Brock as he folded his arms and watched as the small shellfish Pokemon scuttled across the rocky terrain of the gym. Sabrina was amazed at how quickly he moved and said,
"Supersonic!"
"Hide behind a rock so the waves don't touch you!" Kabuto was able to successful dodge the rings of irritating sound and they did nothing, causing Sabrina to scoff in astonishment. Brock sure was impressive with a much smaller Pokemon, which made it a lot harder for Sabrina to use Venonat's attacks. Unless...
"Venonat! Use your confusion on the rock!" She ordered. The rock was about two feet (60 cm) tall and it looked quite heavy as well. Venonat's powers outlined the rock and was able to lift it straight off the ground! Venonat then launched the rock and it collided with the other rock that was in the middle of the field and it smashed into smithereens. Now Kabuto was unable to hide behind the rocks now and Sabrina was amazed at what Venonat did.
"Hm. Not bad. Seems that you, too, are trying to become a psychic master!" commented Brock. "No matter. Kabuto, use your ancient power!" A rock-type move that had the ability to raise all of Kabuto's attacks, but the chance was small. Kabuto created a sphere of grey matter and hurled it towards Venonat. Sabrina couldn't use disable since it was already in effect, but there was a chance that she could stop it with confusion, or at least lower the amount of damage that Venonat would take. She figured she had nothing to lose and she could easily come back if she did lose, which she hoped she didn't.
"Confusion!" ordered Sabrina. She wanted to also use her powers to stop it, but she feared that Brock would notice and disqualify her, and it wouldn't be fair to Venonat, either. She felt that the only way she could get the upper hand was supersonic or maybe even use stun spore. But now she had to stop the advancing rock.
Venonat used confusion, but the attack was so strong that he was only able to drastically lower its speed. The rock hit him and he squeaked in pain and fell over, but he wasn't out. At least it inflicted less damage than normal and that was okay with Sabrina since Venonat still looked fine now.
"Stun spore!" ordered Sabrina.
"Use water gun to wash it away!" said Brock. The two Pokemon used their attacks and the jet of water that came out of Kabuto's mouth washed away the powder and it ultimately did nothing but waste time for both of them. Sabrina sighed and said,
"Supersonic!" Venonat let out another way of chittering noises and the rings of energy began to expand throughout the battle field. Kabuto was unable to dodge them and he got confused, losing his balance in the process.
"Kabuto, snap out of it!" demanded Brock with concern since this put him in a position that was left him quite vulnerable. Sabrina knew what she had to do and said,
"Use confusion!" Since Kabuto couldn't focus on the battle, Venonat easily slammed Kabuto against the back wall of the gym. Miraculously, Kabuto was able to regain control just like that; normally it took a lot longer for a Pokemon to regain control after being confused, but this was a only but a stroke of luck.
"Use rock tomb!" said Brock. Kabuto turned purple and then jumped into the air. A small vibration appeared and then stones came out from the earth and surrounded Venonat!
"Veno, veno!" he shouted in confusion as he now couldn't escape since they were all in the way. Ash gasped at this and then wondered if Sabrina was able to do something to get out of this strap.
"Venonat, use confusion on the rocks!" ordered Sabrina. Venonat tried but it didn't work. He tried it again, but then it started to move! Venonat was free and Brock just growled.
"I'll admit that I'm impressed," said Brock. "No one's ever gotten out of rock tomb. You're a mighty special trainer for someone of your age."
Sabrina nodded and said, "And you've trained Kabuto very well." She wasn't exactly sure if he meant special as in peculiar or really extraordinarily skilled, so she decided to not thank him for that. Sabrina had to figure out a way to stop Kabuto. Another confusion seemed like the best thing to do, but there was a good chance that her opponent would use ancient power again and it might be enough power to defeat Venonat!
"You can do it, Sabrina!" cheered Ash from the sideline. "I have faith in you!"
Sabrina's eyes sparkled when she heard the other say those words, happy to know that she had someone cheering her on for support. Sabrina never had someone to do something like this for her and losing would just make it all the more disappointing.
"Stun spore!" ordered Sabrina as she carefully watched the battle. She had to keep a close eye on Kabuto so that he wouldn't use anything like rock tomb again. Venonat had to have used a lot of energy in order to push those rocks down since they looked significantly larger than the ones that were on the ground. It was obvious that he couldn't take many more attacks, especially if they were rock. Venonat, however, was still weak and did not know a lot of powerful moves, but Sabrina figured that she could at least attempt this one move. The powder flew towards Kabuto, and, unsurprisingly, it was doused by water gun. Sabrina knew another move and said,
"Leech life!" Venonat's eyes glowed red and shot a beam at Kabuto. Nutrients were being drained from the shellfish and they were transferred to the insect Pokemon, replenishing some of his health, but not too much. Venonat looked slightly better thanks to the move and Kabuto looked even worse.
"Absorb!" said Brock.
"Counter it with stun spore!" ordered Sabrina. Venonat was surrounded by a light green aura from Kabuto and had some health removed, although hardly any since he had a four-time resistance to the move. He shot his tan powder towards the other and Kabuto gasped and inhaled it, then was unable to move because it. Brock merely gritted his teeth at this inconvenience and said,
"Try to use ancient power again!" ordered Brock and Kabuto began to prepare the mystic rock attack with a bit of difficulty and hurled it towards Venonat. Sabrina was worried because she felt that Venonat couldn't stop it with confusion. Now she believed Kabuto was the one who was going to win this battle. Venonat's body turned white and he vanished like that!
"What!" exclaimed Brock and Sabrina simultaneously as they watched this happen.
"He teleported!" said Sabrina in utter shock. Sure, Venonat could learn moves like confusion, psybeam, and psychic, but she wasn't aware that he could use teleport. Nonetheless, Sabrina was very pleased with what happened and was glad that Venonat was able to avoid getting hit from the attack.
"Tackle!" she ordered. Venonat appeared and knocked over the shellfish, leaving the other completely open for another attack. Sabrina knew that another confusion would do the trick and she commanded the attack. Kabuto was slammed against the ground and that was enough to defeat the rock Pokemon.
"Ahh! Kabuto!" groaned Brock with mild frustration as he took out his Pokeball. "You did a good job." He put the ball back on his hip after the other was reabsorbed and he turned to Sabrina and said, "Well done! I'm very amazed at the two of you." He reached into his pocket and pulled out the badge and gave it to Sabrina. "Here is your certified proof that you earned the boulder badge!"
Sabrina took it and put it a special case in a compartment she had in her backpack. "Thank you. I was so nervous about my battle."
"Well, you did great for a first-time trainer. I hope to see more of your training!" said Brock with a congratulatory smile. "In fact, if you guys don't mind, I'd like to travel with you so that I can pursue my dream of a Pokemon breeder."
Ash turned to Sabrina and said, "Well? What do you think?"
Sabrina felt that having someone else along the way would make the journey more interesting, but she wondered how Brock would react if he knew her powers. They had to right to tell him to leave if they no longer wanted his company, so what was there to lose?
"Okay! Then it's settled!" said Sabrina with a soft nod. Ash chuckled and said, "Well, let's all go get our Pokemon healed and decide what to do next."
The three went to the Pokemon Center and got healed and took a break.
"So you two want to become psychic masters, huh?" said Brock. "Usually, it's just the standard Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle I face, so this was interesting to fight something new for a change."
"Well, I actually found Sabrina when I was in Saffron the other day!" chirped Ash with excitement.
"Yes, something happened and Ash rescued me," Sabrina added softly. "I admire Ash's courage and kind heart."
"Well, my dad returned from his journey and he's taking care of my siblings," said Brock. "He said it'd be good for me to get out of the house and explore some more."
The three of them continued talking and laughed a bit and before long, it was already getting dark. They would head to the next gym tomorrow and see what adventures came their way!
And there you have it! First gym down! I wanted to have a more detailed gym battle because the original author was a bit rushed and overpowered. No offense or disrespect to the author at all; I respect anyone who writes and everyone should be respect everyone's writing style, regardless if you're a writer yourself or a casual reader! Have a nice day!
