Doctor's Daughter
Disclaimer: I do not own Psych or Doctor Who, no matter how much I wish I did.
Note: I do skip some parts of the episodes. This is because what would happen here is pretty much what happened in the episode.
"Shawn, what the hell is going on?!" Gus yelled as the TARDIS continued to swerve out of control. Shawn was hanging on to the console, laughing his head off. This was his favourite bit, though he'd never admit that to Gus. When it was clear Gus wasn't getting a response from his friend, he turned to the Doctor. "What's happening? What are you doing?"
"I don't know!" The Doctor admitted. He ducked down and stared at his now bubbling hand. "But my old hand is very excited about it!"
"Your old hand?!" Gus exclaimed in shock. "I thought that was just some freaky alien decoration! Are you seriously telling me that's your old hand?!"
"Well…" The Doctor muttered before turning his attention back to his TARDIS.
"It got cut off" Shawn explained, with a grin on his face. He obviously found this very amusing. "So he grew a new one."
"You are impossible!"
"Not impossible. Just… a bit unlikely."
And with one final pull of a lever, the TARDIS stopped shaking uncontrollably. It jerked to a halt, causing all three of its passengers to stumble down. There was a moment of silence where they all had the same question in their heads. Where were they? When where they? Deciding he'd like to know sooner rather than later, the Doctor sprang up from where he sat and sprinted for the door. Shawn and Gus exchanged a look before they followed after him.
July 24th, 6012
The Doctor walked out of the TARDIS, staring at everything in his path with confusion. Where was he? Why did the TARDIS take him here? Here! Of all places. What, some underground bunker or something? He wasn't understanding it, so he kept wandering around, hoping for some kind of explanation.
Shawn and Gus slowly inched their way out of the TARDIS and watched the Doctor do his thing. Shawn still had the same smile on his face, clearly loving every second of this. Gus stared at the Doctor in slight amusement. The curiosity and confusion in the Doctor's eyes was just too perfect for him.
"This is my favourite bit" Shawn whispered to Gus.
"What, he does this often?"
"All the time. Every time we arrive somewhere it's the same reaction. It's a new world, and you just get this… feeling. This amazing, unforgettable feeling, while the Doctor runs around in circles trying to figure it out."
"What, so you get this feeling all the time?"
"What feeling?"
"Like I've swallowed a hamster."
"YES! That's the new world feeling! I get it all the time!"
"STOP!" several soldier came in, fully armed, pointing their guns at them. "Don't move! Stay where you are, drop your weapons." one soldier said. The Doctor and the two friends quickly put up their hands in defence.
"We're unarmed" The Doctor said calmly. "Look, no weapons" The Doctor started waving his hands around, as if that proved anything. "Never any weapons. We're safe." Gus, confused and highly impressionable, started waving his hands around in the exact same way. Monkey see, monkey do.
"Look at their hands" one soldier said to the main soldier. "They're clean."
"Alright. Process them. " the two soldiers behind the main one ran up to the Doctor and started dragging him along with them.
"Oi. OI!" The Doctor protested. "What's wrong with clean hands?"
Shawn and Gus could do nothing but watch as the Doctor's arm was placed in some sort of machine. He protested a bit, and several "ow"s were screamed out, but other than that, their beloved Doctor seemed to be in good health. And then, a pair of doors opened up and a woman walked out. Shawn and Gus couldn't believe their eyes. They watched her walk out so calmly. They watched her get handed a gun. And they watched as she seemed to just instinctively know what to do with it.
"Who is that?" Shawn asked.
"That's… well… that's… that's my daughter."
They soon found themselves in a tunnel. There were few soldiers, but many barriers to hide behind. The soldiers stood at the front, preparing their guns for combat. The Doctor and his two companions stayed in the back, watching from a safe distance. They could clearly see that some of the soldiers were preparing a bomb, and they could only hope they would never need to set it off. The Doctor watched his daughter in almost hatred. He couldn't understand how something that came from him could be such a… soldier. And so, he quickly decided, she wasn't his.
"Get down! It's the Hath!" one of the soldiers cried. The three travellers quickly obeyed, and ducked down, desperate to make their escape. The soldiers fired at the Hath approaching them, fighting a losing battle. Two soldiers were shot and killed and it was a this point that the other soldiers decided to make their retreat.
"Blow it up!" One soldier ordered, while ran.
"No one's blowing up anything!" The Doctor yelled. They all heard a yell and girlish scream in protest. It was Shawn who noticed his best friend being dragged away by one of the Hath.
"Gus!" Shawn scream and started to run towards him. Meanwhile, The Doctor's daughter had finally gotten her hands on the detonation for the bomb.
"No, don't!" The Doctor yelled in protest, but she didn't listen. She slammed her hand on the detonation. The Doctor could do nothing but grab Shawn and drag him out of the explosion with him.
"No, Gus!" Shawn screamed. "GUS!"
BOOM!
Gus woke up not even a full minute after the explosion. All he really knew was that he was sore everywhere. It took him a while to remember the TARDIS, to remember the strange place he found himself in, to remember Shawn screaming out his name and finally… he remembered the explosion. He forced himself to sit up, despite the slight protest in his muscles. Then, he noticed one of the Hath sitting within all the rubble, clutching his shoulder. It was clear that the Hath needed Gus' help. And so Gus surprised even himself when he stood up and walked towards it, smiling and ready to help.
"Hey" Gus started, feeling slightly awkward. The Hath looked up at him before looking back down. "Look, I want to help. What is it, your arm?" it's tank full of green liquid started to bubble. Gus hesitated for a second. "Is that a yes?" The Hath stared at him, barely nodding his head, and Gus knew immediately what that look on its face was. The Hath had the exact same look on its face as Shawn did whenever he said 'Come on, son!'. Gus shook away the thought, and continued to try and help the Hath.
The Hath was not being helpful. Every time Gus would touch his shoulder, just so he could get an idea as to what was going on, the Hath would pull away and make more bubbles. "Look, I'm trying to help" Gus said at last. "I work with Shawn. He always gets himself into worst situations than this." ('Although, granted, Shawn isn't half fish…' Gus thought to himself). "I know how to help, so would you please let me?"
The Hath stared at Gus for a moment before it nodded its head.
"Thank you" Gus said and then started to feel around its shoulder. At least… he thought it was a shoulder. "Right, if this is what I think it is" Gus started to explain, ignoring the Hath's troubled look it shot him. "I think we're dealing with a dislocation. I can fix it, if you'd like" Gus said.
The Hath debated his options for a moment longer before it nodded its head. So, Gus put his hands around the shoulder and prepared to pop it back into place.
"Now… this is going to hurt…" Gus explained. And the second he popped it back to place, a new army of Hath ran towards him. They heard the pop and they heard the Hath's slight yelp in pain (though Gus did not). They all cocked their guns back and aimed it at Gus. In return, Gus just sat there, putting his hands up in surrender. The Hath he was treated quickly explained what was going on, and one by one, the army of Hath put their weapons down.
"Well that was a close one" Gus muttered to himself.
Gus found himself being lead in the opposite direction of the Doctor and Shawn. He didn't know where the Hath were taking him, but he knew he had to get out soon. They lead him into a room, not all that much different from the other base's room. Inside, there were tons of computers, different technologies and pretty much anything. There was even the machine that clones people, the same ones that the Doctor had been forced into.
The line of Hath that were leading him stopped in the centre of the room. The Hath that he had helped said something (though Gus for the life of him couldn't figure out what). Then, all the Hath started to circle around him. Gus was ready to run away screaming. He didn't know what they wanted and they were starting to freak him out. But then, it was all okay. They simply patted him on the back, on the head… generally accepting things.
"well…" Gus said, more to himself than anyone else. "Good to know I'm welcomed."
They brought him to one of their computers which showed a projection of a map. They all looked at Gus expectantly. It took him a while to even realise that they were all staring at him. When he finally did take notice, all he could do was stare at the projection blankly. He had no clue what they expected of him.
"Right…" Gus said, unsure of himself. "So… we're here?" and he pointed to a random spot on the projection. The Hath he helped (which he from now on decided to call Shawn 2.0) gave him the 'Come on, son!' look. So Gus slowly brought his hand away from the projection. And then, right before his eyes, a new layer was added to the map. "Hang on a second, look at that!" Finally, he could redeem himself. "That's a new map! There's a different set of tunnels!" and now the Hath really loved him.
They started to raise their guns in victory. Many of them went up to Gus and patted him on the back. As far as they knew, they were the only ones who knew how to get to the Source. Gus was just so happy to have their respect again, he didn't even tell anyone that he didn't do anything. He had redeemed himself, and now he was that much closer to finding Shawn and the Doctor again and getting out of this place.
And somehow, through all this chaos, his phone rang. He quickly picked it up.
"Shawn?"
'Buddy! You're alive!' Shawn responded.
"Oh my God, I never thought I'd be this happy to hear your voice!" Gus replied. "Are you alright?"
'I'm with the Doctor and Jenny, we're fine. How are you?'
"I'm alright. I think I've just become the Hath's God, though."
'What? How?'
"New tunnels appeared on a map they showed to me. They think I'm the reason it's there and now they're… marching off with guns and clones."
'Oh… yeah, sorry about that, buddy. That was the Doctor's doing. Cobbs' guys are heading down there as well. If they meet, there's going to be a bloodbath. Doctor! We need to get down there and stop it.'
"Great, sounds like a plan. What should I do?"
'Stay there, buddy. You'll be safe there.' And then he hung up.
Gus stared at his phone in disbelief. Shawn couldn't actually think that he'd stay there. Not while his friend was out there risking his life. Nope. Not today. Fearless Guster was back.
He walked over to Shawn 2.0. He was the only one who was not lining up with a gun, and therefore the one he trusted most at that point. Shawn 2.0 was playing with the map projection when Gus walked towards him. He waved Gus over and almost excitedly showed him his work so far. And all Gus could think about was: 'This is exactly how Shawn acts like when he figured out who did it'.
"What? What is it?" Gus asked, referring to the map. And then, a new tunnel appeared on the map. "There's more?" Gus asked in amazement. And then, the map rotated. "I 3D! Oh, you clever fish!" Gus studied the map closely. "Wait, look at this… the tunnels underground zig zag. Why would everyone go from under. If we could just go to the surface and walk in a straight line, we'd get there first." Shawn 2.0 simply shook his head. "Why not?" and so the Hath showed him the readings from outside.
Gus looked closely. It wasn't too bad. Everything was more or less normal. His only worry was the radiation. And so he had to quickly debate with himself. He needed to save Shawn. He was going head first into a war. He needed Gus. So, Gus took in a deep breath. Fearless Guster. Fearless Guster.
"It's not too bad" Gus said to Shawn 2.0. "The radiation is a bit of a worry, but as long as I'm not out there for too long, it shouldn't be too bad." The Hath closed the readings screen and shook his head at Gus. "I have to find Shawn, before he gets himself killed." And with that, Gus started to walk away from his new Hath friend. the familiar bubbling sound stopped him and he turned back. The look Shawn 2.0 gave him was identical to Shawn's puppy eyes look. Whenever Shawn wanted to drag him to something, or when Shawn wanted to go along with him or anything of the sort, Shawn would give him that look. Gus had to smile at this. "You can come if you want."
The Hath quickly caught up with Gus, and together they made their way to the surface.
It was only once they reached the door did the Hath show hesitation. Gus, annoyed at the Hath, turned back at him.
"Look, you can either stay down below for the rest of your life or stand up and get on to the surface! Feel a new earth, feel the wind on your face! Live a little!" Gus exclaimed, surprising even himself. Shawn 2.0 was not as impressed, however, and continued to shake his head, backing away slowly. And that was where, for the first time, Gus saw himself in the Hath. Afraid of the unknown. Gus took in a deep breath. "Suit yourself, but I'm going out there." And with that, Gus opened the door to the surface and walked out.
As Gus stepped out and on to the surface, he immediately knew what Shawn meant before. Though he was technically in the same place, it was a new world. And he had that 'swallowed a hamster' feeling back. He could definitely get used to this. He could definitely see what Shawn saw in travelling with the Doctor. Shawn 2.0 then came onto the surface behind Gus. He turned around to face the Hath, a smile on his face.
"I knew you couldn't resist" Gus said. "Come on, let's go find my friends."
They had been walking for what seemed like hours. He knew if the actual Shawn was here, he would have come up with a thousand jokes by now, making Gus both love and absolutely despise his best friend. But, for all Gus knew, Shawn 2.0 would be doing the exact same thing, if only Gus could understand him. he didn't know, but one thing he was starting to become certain about, was the Hath weren't all that different to him and Shawn. And maybe he had jumped to conclusions on this whole anti-alien thing. Maybe he should give them all a chance.
"It shouldn't be that much further" Gus said. "Can it?" Shawn 2.0 seemed like he was about to answer when suddenly, Gus slipped and started falling down a hill. He screamed his unusually girly scream the whole way down until he found himself in some sort of blackish liquid.
"Shawn!" Gus couldn't help but cry out. "Shawn, I'm sinking! Shawn! Help me!" Shawn 2.0 showed no hesitation. He quickly slid down the very same hill Gus had tumbled down. He reached out his hand towards Gus, and Gus did the same. But it was no use. Gus was too far away. Shawn 2.0 stood up, and Gus, for a quick second, completely believed that the Hath was just going to walk away.
To his surprise and almost despair, Shawn 2.0 jumped in after Gus and helped him out. It wasn't until the pharmaceutical salesman was actually out of the water did he realise that Shawn 2.0 was now drowning. "No! Shawn! Noo!" Gus reached out his hand to help his new friend, but there was no point.
Shawn 2.0's head went under. Gus crumbled onto the ground and allowed himself to cry. And boy, did he cry.
"The war has been going on for seven days" Shawn explained to Jenny.
"But… they said years-"
"No. They said generations" Shawn corrected. "And if they're all like you, children of the machine-"
"They could have twenty generations in a day!" The Doctor finished. "Oh, Shawn, you're brilliants!"
"But the buildings are in ruins!" Jenny continued, still trying to make sense of it all.
"No, not ruins" the Doctor said. "Just empty. Waiting to be populated. "They've mythologised their entire history. The source must be part of that too!" and with that, the Doctor ran ahead, Shawn and Jenny closely behind him. It was then that they came across a familiar face.
Gus, still weeping and holding himself tightly as if he might crumble if he didn't, slowly shuffled his way through the spaceship.
"Gus!" Shawn exclaimed. He ran up to his friend and hugged him tightly. "What the hell happened buddy?"
"The… the quicksand… I was sinking… then… then Shawn… 2.0 jumped in. He's gone, Shawn. 2.0 is gone!" Gus weeped into Shawn's shoulder.
"It's okay, buddy" Shawn said, patting Gus on the back. He didn't fully understand what was going on, but his friend was crying. Wait a minute… "Shawn 2.0?" Shawn asked. "Did you seriously replace me?"
"Jenny was the reason the TARDIS brought us here in the first place" The Doctor concluded, that horrible, depressing look on his face. Shawn and Gus let him speak, hoping this was his way of grieving. "We got here too soon, though, creating her in the first place. It made a paradox. An endless paradox."
"I'm sorry, Doc" Shawn said at last. "I really thought… I hoped… after all those things you'd be willing to die for, I hoped you'd finally have something worth living for."
"Oh… there's always something worth living for, Shawn" The Doctor said, a small smile forming. "Now. Home?" he suggested, looking at Gus. He hesitated for a moment. After everything he just went through with Shawn 2.0, he had learned so much. Aliens weren't all that different from him. They weren't all bad. Not at all. And, most of all, Shawn needed him.
"How about… one more trip" Gus suggested. Shawn and the Doctor perked up at this. Gus was staying.
"I'd love it" The Doctor said.
"Sounds like a plan" Shawn agreed. "Where to, Doc?"
"Well…" The Doctor started. He pulled out his psychic paper. "How about here?"
On the psychic paper was a message. He didn't know who it was from. All it said was:
'The library.
Come as soon as you can. x'
Hello lovelys! Sorry it's so late! (less than a month though. I'm getting better). Will try to update more frequently, but no promises. I apparently suck at keeping promises.
Will be skipping Unicorn and the Wasp as I can't imagine it being any different with Shawn and Gus.
Please review!
