Chapter Seven : King of the North.

"A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at."

Bruce Lee

"I…" Saiyuri managed to make out through heavy breath "… take back whatever I've agreed with you."

Riko Aida sent her a glare:

"It's your fault! I didn't ask you to go with me."

Currently, they were carry two large boxes in their arms.

"Okay, okay…" said Saiyuri, managed to avoid a crash because she couldn't see anything in front of her. "Where are the boys?"

"You know they're tired. They are falling asleep into their desks."

"But I haven't eaten anything yet…." Saiyuri pouted, which just made Riko even more annoyed.

"Who cares? You have the appetite that could eat a baby killer whale!"

"Are you talking about Kagami?"

Aside from gathering information to the point it was illegal, Kokaji Saiyuri was extremely good at switching blames and changing the topic. Riko wondered for the umpteenth time in her life what she had been thinking when getting herself involved with Kokaji. After all, no one but Izuki knew about Kokaji before that girl was eleven.

As far as Riko could remember, Kokaji just appeared into their lives. A brooding and quiet girl with abnormally long fringe, snarled at anyone who approached her.

Izuki told she lived with his family because of her parents' divorce, but Riko knew nothing more. It sometimes irked her. Weren't they friends? She was pretty sure that she was closer to Izuki. They had known each other since they were baby, even before basketball and dreams. Then why did he hide something from her?

Her train of thoughts was interrupted by Saiyuri, who was gleeful suddenly.

"Speaking of devil, hey, freshmen!"

Riko followed Saiyuri's line of vision, spotting Kagami and Teresa eating lunch together. She immediately what Saiyuri was saying. Wanting no more of that girl's whinning, Riko called to them.

"Kagami-kun, Teresa-chan!" The two looked up. "Perfect timing, come with me."

"What can we do for you, coach?" asked Teresa, stood up, Kagami close behind her.

"Come here, Kagami-kun."

"Huh?" Kagami looked at Riko, then at the beaming manager, and had a bad feeling. But before he could even protest, he was saddled with the task carrying two boxes.

"They're heavy!"

"If they weren't, I wouldn't have you carry them." Saiyuri said.

"But I'm sore." Kagami groaned. "Why aren't Teresa holding one?" Upon saying that, he could almost see Saiyuri sending an accusing glare at him.

"You want to make a maiden carry those boxes?" Riko giggled. "And you call yourself a man. That's your job."

"I don't see a maiden anywhere." Kagami deadpanned. Because Teresa was a little evil, coach was a demon, and manager is an orge. Riko punched him in the side. "But what's that, anyway?"

"They're DVDs of this year's and last year's games from the clubroom." Riko replied. "They're for scouting, and the clubroom is so small. We're going to be playing two games in a row against the kings in the semi-finals after all. There's no such thing as over analyzing."

"Hold on, isn't that your job?" Kagami turned to Saiyuri. "Gathering information, analyzing opponents and the likes?"

"Since when you needed me to do it?"

At Shuutoku High, Midorima Shintarou had just met up with Takao Kazunari in the lunch break (he decided not to question how Takao could find him in the middle of crowd) and stared at the jewel case in the black haired one's hand, unamused.

"DVD?"

"Yeah, of Seiho." Takao grinned. "We're the only freshmen regulars, and we don't know anything."

"I'm not interested."

"Just because that Teresa girl and Kagami aren't on it, don't be like that. These are the guys to beat in the finals. Besides, we're off today. And it's not like you have anything better to do."

"No." Midorima admitted reluctantly.

"It's decided then." Takao grinned and dragged Midorima with him, much to the green haired's annoyance.

Takao was just freaking strong when he aimed for something.

Teresa set up the player and inserted the DVD.

"Seiho vs Kitawada… I hope it'll be interesting."

XXXXXXX

"I see." said Midorima, frowing deeply as he watched Seiho play. They were particularly aggressive in defense, not even allowing the opponents to get past. Not to mention that they were incredibly fast. "I can see why they are considered one of the kings. Their defense is especially strong." He remarked, too focused for the one who had said that he wasn't interested moment agao. "Just…"

"Their movements are kind of weird." Kagami commented. "I mean…" 'Their rhythm is different,' he thought to himself. 'What is this feeling?'

"I forgot to mention it, but this school holds special practices." Takao commented. "I don't know how they do it, but their mobility is exceptional. They run the best defense in Tokyo." He replayed the disc, eyes looking at Seiho number 10.

"This bald guy's defense is especially tough." Kagami remarked.

"I know this guy," Teresa said after a moment of silence, and Kagami turned towards her in surprise. "I played against him once in middle school, during second year. Kise-kun had just made it in as a regular, so you could say that he doesn't have much experience in matches yet, but somehow…" She turned back towards the video. "He managed to stop Kise-kun."

"Twenty four seconds over time!" The referee called out.

"What?" asked Kise, who was holding the ball in shock.

"Kise, you kept the ball too long, you idiot!"

"Sorry!"

"Kise-chin, give me a break."

Midorima said, adjusted his glasses. "This is why you're any good." Kise looked at the only person that would defend him, but even she was looking at him sternly.

"Kise-kun, please pass the ball around properly."

"Teresacchi, even you're mad?"

The captain said in the bench, sighing. "Kise, you're the only one that is 20 points under your norm,"

"Sorry!" Kise apologized again. "But Teresacchi…"

"It is different for her, and you know it."

Kise scowled and glared at the bald player that had been marking him since the beginning of the first quarter. "What's your name?" The blonde demanded. "Because of you, I'm the only one getting yelled at today."

"Tsugawa Tomoki." His opponent answered. "I see. They're yelling at you, huh?". That's great. I love seeing people get upset."

"Who is this guy? Will someone change marks with me?" He wailed, but the bald guy just ignored him and grinned at Teresa. This action didn't go unnoticed, because the others glared daggers at the guy, making Teresa wonder.

"To be honest, I do not particularly wish to go against him." Said Midorima, recalling the events and the look that guy had given to Teresa.

"But you're the only one who can take him." Takao told his friend. "Their defense is good on a National level. They might even be able to stop you." The video ended with Seiho clinching a victory against Kitawada, with a game count of 71-12.

"It's over. Seirin won't be able to overcome this wall. Sorry, but we're gonna have to play these guys in the finals. Keep that in mind."

"…I know."

Back in Serin, Riko with the rest of the team was watching the video in silence, with much more focused and still impressed at Seiho's defense.

"We already knew it would be…" Izuki started. "… but this is going to be tough."

"Sorry." Said Koganei, his face crestfallen. "I feel like crying again."

"Frankly," said Riko, turning to the team. "we'd lose nine times out of ten against Seiho and Shuutoku. We just have to bring that one win to our games."

"You know…" said Hyuuga, frowning in though. "I wouldn't go so far as to call it strategy, but I have an idea."

XXXXXXXXX

The match against Seihou had finally arrived for Seirin and the teams were warming up on the court and Saiyuri, after done with arranging the supplements and energy drinks for Seirin and demanding them to give her the ball, was passing the ball to Teresa.

"As long as you don't run, you can do it." Izuki had given up with a sigh, showing his sorry expression to Teresa.

Teresa had nodded, but she hadn't expected that. Saiyuri's passes were strong, as if the older girl was using her full strength in one pass. No normal player could catch it without snapping their wrists for sure. Moment like this, Teresa thanked Teikou for putting her under an seemingly inhuman training.

Saiyuri said as the two passing the ball back to each other:

"You're faster than I think. Perhaps you're keeping your head cool, unlike that idiot." She gestured towards Kagami, who was glaring at the Shuutoku's side of the stadium, particular a young man with green hair who was glaring back with equal loathing. There was electricity shooting between them.

"You're staring down the wrong guy, idiot." Hyuuga said, turned Kagami's head to the opposite direction in which he is glaring at, almost twisting the redhead's head off. "No matter how hard you stare, if we lose this next game, you'll look like an idiot."

"I was just looking at him." Said Kagami, nursing his abused head. "I'm focused on our next game." He glanced at Seiho. 'Who are these guys? They seem good, but they're completely different from Shutoku.'

"Seiho seems more normal than I expected." Furihata remarked, and Saiyuri mentally noted to train his observing skills. "They don't have any really big guys."

"I suppose they are small for a National class team." Riko admitted. "Their biggest player would be their captain, Iwamura-kun."

Their eyes fell upon said captain who was taking his form for a basket. "Is he about as tall as Mitobe-sempai?" Fukuda wondered. "He's pretty wide."

"He's so thick!" Furihata whimpered. "He seems really powerful!"

"Then there's their play maker, Kasuga-san." Riko said, looking at the blonde girl at Seiho's "Those two third years are the core of their team."

"Woa, they have a cute girl as well." Fukuda commented.

"Sure, Kasuga Ryouko is cute." Saiyuri said, catching the ball with her left hand. "Just wait until she steps onto the court. The prettier a girl is, the more dangerous she becomes."

"Look like you're speaking from experience, it kinds of scares me." Said Hyuuga.

The freshmen continued to stare at them (mostly Kasuga.) until a voice called out to Kagami.

"You're Kagami-kun, aren't you?" Said redhead turned around only to see the bald player that he and Teresa had discussed about standing in front of him, the one that stopped Kise Ryouta of Generation of Miracles. "Your hair's so red! Scary!"

The corner of Saiyuri's mouth twitching. "What's wrong with red?" And what was his name, again?

"Captain, this is the guy, right?" Tsugawa called to his team, voice loud and clear so that the whole stadium heard him. "Seirin's really weak, but they have one strong guy!" He shouted, waving both his arms like flags.

"You've done it now, you little shit," Riko growled, cracking her knuckles in attempt to strangle the bald guy.

"Woa." Suddenly, he whistled, staring at Teresa. Finally, he said, right before Teresa decided that she was tired of his eyes and about to ignore him. "You're pretty cute, you're the manager, right? Have you met before?"

"I'm the manager." Saiyuri said, suddenly very very polite. Tsugawa stared at her in disbelief.

"What? You're not cute at all! Not to mention, you're taller than her. But I'm not talking to you." He turned to Teresa. "So, wanna go out for a movie or something? After we beat your school in a match."

Silence.

Takao winced as he saw Midorima's dark expression, grabbing the shooter's arm tightly, half-whispered and half-pleaded:

"Shin-chan…"

"I'll kill him." Midorima stated shortly. People would think he was too overprotective of her, but as far as Midorima cared, Teresa was as fragile as ice.

"No, you won't." said Takao firmly. "You can't get yourself disqualitied before the games. Besides, it looks like the girl can handle herself… or at least," Takao added upon realizing Midorima was now glaring at him. "Seirin won't let him come near her."

As if on cue, Teresa spoke: "I refuse, you're not my type."

"Why not?"

"Because…" said Saiyuri, managed to make out through laughter and heavy breath. "She's my girlfriend."

Teresa looked at her sharply. Midorima frowned.

"Just because you're bisexual," said Izuki, with his endless patience when it came to Kokaji Saiyuri "you can't claim her as your girlfriend, which she's not."

Upon hearing that, Tsugawa's hopes built up again, only to be scattered. This time, it was his captain – Iwamura, who came to smack him on the head:

"Enough from you already! I apologize for this moron's behavior. He can't read the situation, so he just says what he's thinking."

"You don't need to apology." Hyuuga replied coldly. "We're going to win. If you look down on us like you did last year, you'll end up in tears."

"That won't happen. Besides, we weren't looking down on any of you. You were just weak, that's all."

"What?" Tsugawa protested. "Captain, you're not mincing words either."

"You idiot, I just don't sugar-coat my words."

Meanwhile, a certain blonde was heading to the stadium where Seirin would have their match against Seiho, headphones in his ears and his captain, Kasamatsu walked along. For the umpteenth time, Kasamatsu wondered what their coach was thinking when inviting that child to Kaijou.

"What are you looking at?"

"A recording of this morning's Oha-Asa." Kise cheerfully replied. "It's their morning horoscope. When this thing's good, Midorimacchi's good."

"The guy from Teiko," Kasamatsu rolled his eyes.. "What's his sign?"

"Cancer." Kise replied. "And Teresacchi's an Aquarius."

"I didn't ask."

"First place goes to Cancer. Congratulations! You'll have no complains today." A gloomy image of an animated figure presented one of the horoscope signs appeared on the phone screen, with the words 'Last Place: Aquarius' on it. "Last place goes to Aquarius. Play it quiet today."

"Uh oh." The blonde stopped, commented.

Kasamatsu raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"This is terrible," said Kise.

In the Seiho dressing room, the boys were changing their jerseys and Iwamura glanced up at Kasuga, who was standing next to him, fixing her hair and had her back turn to all of them.

"What was your impression of them, Kasuga?" Always trusted their Point Guard to have the exact advise.

"The second years seem to have gotten stronger; though I won't expect much from them yet. We should keep an eye on that first year, Kagami."

"Since you're both first years, Tsugawa, you'll take Kagami. You should be able to shut down anyone."

"Yes! This is starting to get fun!"

"There it is, the Tsugawa Smile." Said Kasuga in distaste. "Wear your jersey properly, brat!"

"You're the only in the world who smiles while playing defense." Iwamura sighed.

"Now, all of you, get out for me to change." Kasuga demanded, and the boys just nodded.

Back to Seirin, all were sitting on the bench in heavy silence. Riko frowned. 'Hmm... everyone is a bit tensed after all... Especially Teresa... What was with that guy...? Does she know him from middle school? Even Saiyuri has to act as a lesbian…'

Then, the coach clapped her hands:

"You're all a little too uptight. So I've thought of a reward that'll lighten you all up! If you win the next match..." She started, putting on her best sexy face and winking at her boy players. "I'll give all of you boys a kiss on the cheek! How about that! Ufu!"

Everyone just stared at her as if she had lost her mind. Saiyuri was the first one to break the silence:

"Ri-chan, are you having a fever?"

"You don't even take part in the game." said Riko.

"I'll pass." Teresa said flatly.

"Me too. I have a girlfriend." Tsuchida said, cowering a little as Mitobe looked at him in greatest betrayal. Tsuchida's girlfriend just happened to be Mitobe's little sister.

"I think we all will. But… Hyuuga seems to want it?"

"What the hell are you talking about, Izuki?"

"Shun, you're my soulmate."

"I'll pass."

"Don't know that you can be that mean, Izuki-senpai."

"I'll take that as compliment, Furihata-kun."

Kagami's voice interrupted them.

"Coach, are you okay?"

"Heh… heh heh heh…"

"C-Coach?" Hyuuga instantly paled. "If I hurt your feelings, I'm sorr—"

"SHUT UP AND GET IT TOGETHER ALREADY, YOU IDIOTS! YOU WANT TO KICK THEIR ASSES AND PAY THEM BACK FOR LAST YEAR, DON'T YOU? WELL, LET ME TELL YOU, IT'S GOING TO BE A LOT IF YOU INCLUDE A YEAR'S WORTH OF INTEREST!"

"We know, Coach; we know. So don't cry, okay?"

"F-Fine." Said Riko, wiping her tears.

"And you say we're being lovey-dovey all the time, look at you, Hyuuga."

"Shut up, Kokaji!" Riko glared at her.

"Listen up, you all!" Hyuuga called out, his tone serious. "Before we start, let me say this again. I'm sure you'll start to feel it as soon as the match starts, but prepare yourselves for the worst. Especially the first-years, because Seihou is strong. Well that goes without saying, but after what we had gone through last year, all of us hated basketball so much that we actually thought of quitting. Ah, but there's no need to worry about it! We all got over it and are much better now. Actually, we're happy that we get this chance again!..."

"Actually, my reason isn't that noble." Said Izuki, which Hyuuga pointedly ignored.

"… That's because I'm confident that all of us have become much stronger; and now all we have to do is win! Let's go!"

"Izuki-senpai, what's your reason?" said Furihata in curiosity.

Saiyuri started laughing nervously. Izuki shrugged, face perfectly blank:

"I don't want to see her cry. I'm bad at comforting."

"It's so embarrassing!" Saiyuri exclaimed, pushing Izuki out of the room. "Let's go!"

"It's not like we don't know about it… Are you blushing, Kokaji?"

"Don't talk anymore, Hyuuga!"

As the team slowly started to file out of the door, Teresa turned to Kagami, stopped the redhead with the hesitant tone of her voice. "Kagami-kun, have you… hated basketball before?"

"Huh?" Kagami was taken back, pondering over the question. "No, I haven't."

"I have." Teresa admitted, suddenly find the floor very interesting. "I believe my reason was different from the sempais, but I know the feeling. They're cheerful now, but hating something you love is a painful feeling."

Kagami was speechless. He didn't get much what she was saying, but it must be hard for her… to see the love turn into hatred, to feel her love turn into hatred.

"When I spoke with Midorima-kun, I told him that the past and the future aren't the same, but in the end, they're not completely separate." Teresa continued, not looking up. "I think that this game is important for our seniors to get over the past."

Kagami grinned at Teresa. "What are you getting all gloomy for?" he asked, and Teresa looked at him, surprised. "We're going to win, then we're going to beat Shutoku! It's no use just thinking about it! We just play."

"Right." She smiled.

"Let the first A-block semi-finals match between Seirin High and Seihou High begin!"

Outside the stadium, a black hair girl was tapping her fingers impatiently against the wall, cursing her late companion. 'Just wait until he comes and I'll slaughter him…' Unfortunately, her thoughts were interfered by a teasing voice:

"Waiting for someone, pretty girl?" She looked up, only to find three guys standing around her. 'Great, trouble time.' "Forget your boyfriend and go with us…?"

A fist connected to his jaw when one of them attempted to grabbed her arm.

"What business do you have here? If none, go away!"

Watching those three fleed away, she turned to him:

"You don't need to do that."

"If I didn't interfere," he said, scratching his light orange head. "They will be killed."

"By whom?"

"Captain, isn't that obvious? I've always told you that your prettiness attracts unwanted attention, that's why captain told you to leave the team. And what did you do, you punched…"

"Stop speaking." She glared at him. "Come on, he's waiting inside. You should worry about yourself first."

"You won't let him kill me, will you?"

A heavy sigh followed.

"It's because you got me out of trouble."

"Are you being tsundere?"

"I've changed my mind."

"I didn't say ANYTHING, Nee-san!"

"Calling me Nee-san is the last straw." She said, glanced down at the court. "Ah, here you are, we've come." She was saying to her another companion, who was leaning against the rail, with the phone in his hands.

"Sorry, sorry!" The orange hair boy waved his hands, trying to smile. "Please don't…"

"You two are late." said the other boy, eyes kept on a certain teal haired girl and her redhead teammates.

"Sorry!"

The black hair girl glanced at the scoreboard, uttered:

"Oh my my, is Seihou winning 12 - 0? My sense of timing tells me that the match has just started."

"That guy is troublesome." said the one with light hair, eyes on Tsugawa. "His defense is pretty good. No wonder why they're one of three Kings of Tokyo."

"Did you just say something intelligent?"

"You're so mean, Nee-san."

"Foul! White 10!"

"What?" Kagami shouted in disbelief and over at the Seirin's bench, Riko was twitching:

"Just how easily does that idiot get angry?"

"Power Forwards are always like that, I didn't expect anything much." said Saiyuri flatly.

"Kagami, calm down!" Koganei who was on the bench called out to the redhead.

"Kagami-kun, you already have two fouls." Teresa informed Kagami, who just groaned in annoyance. "Get five and you're out."

"I know. Somehow, their movements are impossible to play against."

Teresa thought to herself, recalling Seiho's movements in DVDs. 'Not quite, but I can't figure it out yet…'

Hyuuga was scowling to himself. 'Seriously? I thought that the Generation of Miracles were the only ones who could shut down Kagami.'

'We can't even pass.' Riko frowned, watching Teresa as the teal haired girl was trying to find an opening. 'We won't be able to make plays with Teresa-chan.'

Teresa finally got the ball from Izuki, but soon realized that every single of her teammates was guared by a Seiho player, leaving no open to her at all.

'Again?'

"Seiho's defense is man-to-man." Kasamatsu explained. "But this is no ordinary man-to-man. They're creating pressure by staying right on their guys the whole time. You can't break away from them so easily. No matter how good you are at passing, if no one's free, you're playing at half power."

"Their defense is strong, but they'll never last until the end of the game playing like that." Kise commented, his eyes trailing to his former teammate down on the court.

On Seirin's bench, Saiyuri remarked: "We need to be faster."

"Easier said than done, you know." Koganei groaned.

"Not quite." Saiyuri's eyes narrowed as she watched Teresa, who was dribbling the ball. She frowned a bit, and suddenly threw the ball. It flew really fast, bounching against the board, only to be thrown back with the same force. "Kagami, the ball!" The manager shouted from the bench.

Kagami, who was guarded by Tsugawa, quickly snapped out of his shock, and found himself running past a shocked Tsugawa, leaping into the air and made a dunk, scoring for Seirin.

"Wh… WHAT'S THAT?"

"IS IT EVEN LEGAL?"

"It's not as if there's a rule saying we can't use that move, isn't it?" Saiyuri was grinning and sparkling too much for anyone's liking.

Kise was cheering loudly, much to Kasamatsu's dismay, and Midorima crossed his arms, deep in thought.

"Woa…" The dark haired girl uttered. "Is that even possible? How can she use such force? She looks really fragile."

"You look fragile too, Nee-san."

She paid him no mind, turned to her other companion, whose red eyes betrayed no emotions. Finally, he said, watching Seirin request for a timeout.

"Passing is her speciality, so she works her wrists to be strong and flexible. Teresa is dangerous."

"Why are all pretty girls so hard to approach?" groaned the other boy.

"I think you have someone you like already! Besides, don't you dare think of touching her hair!"

XXXXXXX

"Seihou is using old martial arts." Riko explained, only confused Kagami even more.

"Old martial arts? Hi-ya?"

"They're not kicking..." She deadpanned. "I'm not talking about the same martial arts! I mean, more exactly, what they're using is 'martial arts movements'. One of those is called the 'nanba run'. Usually, when you're running, the arm you swing forward is the opposite one of your leg but with the namba run, you're running while swinging forward the arm on the same side as your leg."

"By twisting your body that way, there's less burden on it. It seems you lose less stamina that way." Kasamatsu said to Kise.

"You sure know your stuff, huh?" Kise asked.

"That's because they're an unusual team, even at the national level. There's been some articles on them in monthly basketball, too."

The model's eyes kept on Seihou again, thought: 'That's how they do it. Tsugawa's defense is even stronger than last year.' He couldn't but twitch when recalling some unpleasant memories. 'However, they won't take this sitting down for long.'

"Other than the nanba run they can use their strength even when not steady on their feet, move faster without losing balance, they're using various basic movements of old martial arts. That's the strength of Seihou." She continued and Kagami nodded, trying to process exactly what she was telling them. 'Martial arts movements... So, that was what felt out of place...' He thought. "But it's not like they're disappearing or flying. The opponents are high school students just like you! They'll fall for feints and you can destroy their balance by taking them by surprise. They're playing basketball, just like you. As long as you're playing like usual, it'll work. It's not the time to go crazy just yet!"

"Besides…" said Saiyuri, finally done with her papers. "It's not like everything is getting out of control. The more complicated a strategy is, the easier its weaknesses are shown. Just observe them carefully."

As they were about to start again, Kagami turned to Izuki.

"Izuki-senpai, would you mind giving me the ball?"

"Eh?"

"Let me go against that guy once more."

"Then it's alright to leave it to you? Do you have some kind of plan?"

"No... but the guy is still human just like me, right? I just have... to go faster than the opponent I guess."

"Wooh, what's with that? Are you sure it'll be okay?"

"I think it will be alright. He is a man who will do the things he has to do." Said Teresa, and Izuki looked at her in curiosity, before remarking:

"Nice move you have, Teresa."

Now if she recalled the event, Izuki-senpai didn't really look surprised.

The timeout ended and they made their ways back to the court, Izuki immediately passed the ball to Kagami and was once again being blocked by Tsugawa, who smirked at the play.

"Oh, one-on-one? Come!"

Kagami scowled. "Who cares if you're using martial arts or whatever. Basketball is basketball!"

With that being said, the red head sped past the freshmen, who jumped back in his way, but was shocked when Kagami passed him again, even faster and hurried to the basket, scoring the second point for Seirin.

"Oooh! Seriously? That thing just now?"

"Lightening speed!"

Kagami threw the ball to Teresa, who catched it in surprise:

"We will win this game." He said with determination.

"Oh, oh." said Kasuga, watching Tsugawa whose face darkened. "That's the first time I've seen someone pass you. I think I like him."

Tsugawa sent her a surprised glance, said in the tone of a person who had suffered the greastest betrayal:

"What're you thinking, Kasuga-senpai? Like him?"

"Huh? Don't worry, brat! He isn't my type."

"That's good to hear. That aside," A grin grinned, playing a staring match with Kagami again. "It's more fun when it's hard."

"I can never understand you." Kasuga sighed.
