Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter
Jane's ears were ringing. Had she heard correctly?
She stood there in Dumbledores office standing behind the Weasley Twins and in front of Mrs. Weasley.
She felt almost like she was going to faint. Somehow she went from reading a book back in her orphanage bedroom to standing in Hogwarts listening to Mrs. Weasley yell at her sons and then saying she was going to adopt Jane. Jane was going to be adopted. Not a foster home, but a real home. Finally, and with the Weasley no less.
She needed to sit down and process the last few minutes.
She had been talking to Dumbledore, and then he told her to get the twins back in here. Then the three of them sat on the couch and listened to Dumbledore as he punished the twins and then he sent a letter through the flew network summoning their mother.
And now Jane was going to be a Weasley. Her wildest dreams were coming true. And she felt like she was going to throw up.
"Are you alright dear?" Mrs. Weasley asked, pushing past her sons and taking Jane by the arm, steering her to sit down on the sofa.
"I'm fine, just uh…a bit dizzy is all." Jane couldn't bring herself to look at Mrs. Weasley. She was scared that it would be like in her dreams when she would go to look at her mother sitting beside her, and she would instantly disappear. It seemed like with every moment that passed Jane feared more and more that this was a dream because if it was, if she woke up, she would be even more broken inside.
"When was the last time you ate? You look too skinny. I'm sure they didn't feed you enough at that orphanage where you lived. What is wrong with people, children need food and lots of it if they are going to grow." Mrs. Weasley was sitting beside Jane on the couch rubbing Jane's back worried that the frail girl beside her was going to pass out.
Jane wanted to laugh as Mrs. Weasley ranted a very Mrs. Weasley rant.
"Mum why don't you give her some space I'm sure she is just overwhelmed, " Fred said taking a step closer to the couch.
"Don't you start with m, young man. I don't want to hear another word about anything from you two. I cannot believe you pulled this poor girl away from her home. Your father will be hearing about this." her shrill voice rang and she wagged her finger at her sons.
But that was the final straw for Jane "Your father will be hearing about this," she just had flashbacks to a pail Malfoy played by Lauren Lopez saying "My father will hear about this," and the whole meme that went with that one sentence, and she burst out laughing.
The room went silent, aside from Jane's hysteria, and everyone stared at her. She tried to calm herself down she even tried to explain but she couldn't. This whole thing was ridiculous, and in the past hour alone Jane had gone through more emotions than she had in the past year.
She was in Hogwarts!? This was all actually happening, and all she really wanted to do was make about a zillion references, and hilariously none of the people here would understand any of them.
Finally, Jane started to calm down, and catch her breath.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Weasley I wasn't laughing at you. It is just that…" she didn't quite know how to explain the situation "I am a bit overwhelmed and it was finally hitting me, everything that happened, and … and I guess I just found the whole thing a bit ridiculous."
Mrs. Weasley went back to rubbing her back "Oh well I do suppose it is bit ridiculous. I've never even heard of such a thing as pulling someone from a different time, but here you are, and I think we have some shopping to do, don't we?" she looked up at Dumbledore.
"Yes, I suppose you two do. While we are on the subject, I should inform you that considering Jane's unique circumstances, and the fact that it is partially the school's fault, she is eligible for a scholarship that will cover the cost of her books, supplies, robes, and a little bit extra for any other essentials. I will have a Gringotts vault set up for her, but in the meantime, I can give you enough to set her up for the coming year." As he spoke, he walked across the room to one of the bookcases, took a book off the shelf, reached behind it and pulled out a sizable sack of gold.
Jane loved Harry Potter with all her heart, but for the life of her, she couldn't wrap her head around the money. But by the looks on the faces of the Weasley's this was a rather significant amount of money.
Despite this, she heard Mrs. Weasley start to refuse it. "That is very generous of you sir, but Jane is a Weasley, and we can take care of all of our children. You should give that to someone who needs it more."
Jane and basically everyone else (muggle audience of HP and the whole wizarding world) knew that The Weasley's barely had enough money as it was, but adding another child to their family was certainly not something they could afford. Jane wasn't sure what to say, and the twins wouldn't look at her. Jane took a deep breath and turned to Mrs. Weasley. They were still sitting on the sofa.
"Mrs. Weasley please I have spent my whole life being a drain on either society or the families that I live with. I know you might have enough money to support me, but it is really important to me that I am not a drain on my family." She could see that this wasn't working so she continued "And it doesn't have to be a handout, I can assist somehow at the school, like a paid intern or something." she turned to Dumbledore "Right Professor?"
"Well I do have to say that it is a bit unorthodox, it certainly has never been done before, but in the short time that you have been here, you have already shown yourself useful. It would defiantly be nice to have your assistance in some matters." He gave a small smile.
"No dear I wouldn't want you to have to work. When you're at school, you have to focus on your studies." Mrs. Weasley looked concerned.
"I agree, I need to do well in school so I can get a good job, but imagine leaving Hogwarts with some experience under my belt, I would be able to put it on my resume, or my CV, and maybe even one day teach. Please, Mrs. Weasley let me take the money, I would love this opportunity to feel useful."
Jane watched Mrs. Weasley's internal struggle. She wanted to refuse the money on principle, which Jane could completely understand, she had done it her self-countless times, but Mrs. Weasley didn't want to be the one to deny Jane this opportunity, and she also knew that their family really couldn't completely afford another child.
"Alright if you really want to, but when you're home I will not let you do any chores, you are already doing too much for this family. After all, we are supposed to be taking care of you, not the other way round."
Jane just smiled and said, "Thank you, Mrs. Weasley." She wasn't really sure how else to respond. Jane wasn't used to people being worried about her or wanting to take care of her, she was just used to fighting through it all on her own, but she was starting to realize that those days were coming to an end, especially with a mother like Molly Weasley.
Author's note:
Hey so it has been a really long time since I last posted, but I have not forgotten about you. I feel so guilty for taking so long especially cause I promised that once summer came, I would be posting more, but I have set a new goal for myself. I really want to try and post a new chapter every day. However, I do know myself, so if I only get three more chapters up this week, I will call it a success.
Also, I might have my sister start reading these over before I post them, but that will delay the process a bit just warning you (also I might not do that cause I'm super impatient).
Please review, and ask questions and I will respond to everything cause I love getting feedback so much.
Spoiler Ginny is going to probably be in the next chapter!
