Hot Coffee
End
After Rigby and Mordecai shared their moment together, they got off of the bed and simply stared at each other for a few seconds. They didn't really know what to do at that point. Mordecai didn't expect to get this far with Rigby and Rigby didn't know until this point that Mordecai had feelings for him. Regardless, the feelings they had for each other just felt right.
Rigby was the first to drop his gaze. He looked towards the door and noticed that there were a few neatly-organized pieces of paper on the floor. He walked towards the papers and picked them up, skimming through them.
"What is it, Rigby?"
Rigby chuckled. "I guess Benson has a thing for eavesdropping." Rigby waved the papers in front of Mordecai. "These are my reinstatement papers."
"Reinstatement papers?" A smile began to form on Mordecai's face. "Wait. Does that mean that Benson wants you to come back?"
"Yeah, dude." Rigby looked at his hands with a smug look on his face. "He just couldn't keep a good-looking guy like me away from the park for more than a couple days."
Mordecai lightly punched Rigby on the shoulder. "Yeah right, dude." He laughed along.
"Yeah, I know. But it's nice to know that he cares," Rigby said with a smile. He took the papers back from Mordecai and read them more delicately.
"So… are you going to come back?" Mordecai asked, legitimately concerned that Rigby would not want to come back to the park.
"Not come back?" Rigby asked, shocked. "Why would I not want to come back?" He dropped the papers to the side and wrapped his arms around Mordecai. "Dude, I would have the ability to move out of Eileen's jank apartment and move back in with my best bro who so happens to my boyfriend now. Like… there is no lose in that."
Mordecai got onto his knees and hugged Rigby back. "I'm glad to hear that, dude." He let go for a second and looked at Rigby. "But aren't you afraid that you're going to make Eileen upset. She's fragile."
Rigby frowned. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Live with her and work with her for a couple of days and then immediately ditch her at the last second. How am I going to break it to her? I'm not THAT heartless."
Mordecai placed a feathered hand onto Rigby's shoulder. "You're not heartless at all, dude. You just need to say it how it is. No big deal."
"Yeah, I get it." Rigby turned around for a second, before turning back to face Mordecai. "So… Benson has probably already told the entire house about us, so we don't have to worry about that. But, do you want me to tell Margaret and Eileen or should I leave those details out for now."
"I think they should know. Besides, like I said, I really don't care for Margaret like that at all, so breaking news to her like this won't be that big of a deal either."
"Alright, cool dude. So you can tell both of them, then."
Mordecai rolled his eyes. "Yeah, as if. It might not be a big deal, but I don't want to get in the middle of all of this."
Rigby sighed, but then tried a different tactic. He morphed his face into the best puppy dog face that he could make. He then said wimpingly, "Pwease, Mordecai. It would help a lot."
Normally, Mordecai wouldn't fall for this. But, for whatever reason, Rigby's puppy face was reaching him more than usual. He sighed lightly and said, "Fine, dude. Just stop doing that cute face before my head explodes."
Rigby smiled. "Sweet. Looks like I have a new trick against you." He sat on the floor and placed the reinstatement papers right in front of him. He grabbed a pen and filled out all of the forms in front of Mordecai.
Mordecai sat down across from Rigby. "Yeah, this is just a one-time thing, Rigby. There is no way I'm falling for it again." Sadly, Mordecai didn't know that he would fall for Rigby's puppy dog face several time in the midst of their relationship.
Rigby spent the night at the park house. He got cold on his trampoline since it was starting to become winter, so Mordecai invited him to join him in his bed. Rigby gladly accepted and was immediately warmed up when Mordecai wrapped his arms around him.
The next morning, Rigby woke up at 7 o'clock. He half expected to wake up on Eileen's couch in her apartment, all of the previous events being a dream. When he saw that he was still wrapped up in Mordecai's arms, he smiled, all of the wonderful memories of the night before coming back to him.
Rigby wanted to say good morning to Mordecai, but at the same time, he didn't want to wake him up. Instead, he slowly got out of Mordecai's light grip and got out of the bed. He slipped out of the room and headed downstairs, into the kitchen. Rigby saw that Benson was at one of the counters, trying to reach for one of the bowls.
Rigby dragged one of the chairs an inch and sat in it. The noise caught Benson's attention and he turned around to face Rigby. He smiled and said, "Oh, Rigby. I had no idea that you were here."
Rigby chuckled lightly, still feeling a little sleepy. "Oh yeah, sure Benson. There is absolutely NO way that you knew what happened last night between me and Mordecai."
"I have no idea what you mean," Benson said, trying to hold in a chuckle. He sat down next to the table across from Rigby.
"Okay, have it your way then." Rigby pulled out his reinstatement papers and placed them on the table. "This is what you're looking for, right?"
Benson nodded. "Yeah, I figured you would make the right choice in coming back. I'm sure Mordecai is pretty happy about that."
"I'm sure he is, too," Rigby said with an innocent smile.
"Well, I guess nothing's going to change then," Benson said as he returned to the counter. "I'll give you some time to quit the coffee shop, and it's back to work for you."
"Alright, Benson. You got it." Rigby went over to the fridge and went looking through it.
Benson looked over at Rigby. "What is that? Is Rigby actually complying with the rules right away?"
Rigby chuckled and shrugged. "What can I say? I guess I'm a new raccoon now."
"Hopefully not too new," someone said. Rigby turned to see that Mordecai was standing at the entrance to the kitchen, rubbing his eye. "I like this Rigby."
Rigby couldn't help but blush. He didn't think he would ever do that around Mordecai, but Mordecai just made him feel better about himself. "Good morning, Mordecai."
Mordecai walked up to Rigby and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Good morning, Rigby."
Rigby blushed a little bit harder. He was embarrassed because he wasn't used to the affection, and he knew that Benson was staring at the both of them. "Uh… uh… so I'm going to the coffee shop after breakfast. Do you want to… come with me?"
Mordecai nodded. "Yeah. I'm tired and I could use some coffee anyways." Mordecai turned to Benson and asked, "Do you mind?"
Benson nodded and gave Mordecai a smug face. "No, no, no. You two take all of the time that you need. This park isn't going anywhere."
Mordecai gave Benson a flat face. "Benson, can you just… stop being weird." Mordecai reached and grabbed Rigby's hand as they walked out of the house.
Benson thought for a second. He turned towards the coffee maker on the counter and whispered to himself, "Maybe I've been watching too many soap operas lately. It's good until you start relying on the romance of others…"
Mordecai and Rigby walked together towards the coffee shop. They entered and walked over to Eileen, who was behind the cash register. She gasped and walked over to Rigby.
"Rigby! Where were you last night?"
Rigby frowned, realizing that this was going to be more difficult than he thought. He was about to say something in response, but Mordecai stopped him.
Mordecai said, "Rigby stayed over at the park house last night."
Eileen looked up at Mordecai before returning his gaze. "You should've told me that you were going to stay there for the night. I was worried about you."
"Listen, is Margaret here?" Rigby asked. "Mordecai and I have something to tell the both of you, and you will get your answers."
Eileen nodded. "Yeah, she's in the back right now. Should I go get her?"
Rigby nodded.
Eileen went back to the kitchen and Mordecai and Rigby sat down at their usual table. They waited there in silence. They knew that this was going to be an awkward situation, but they didn't know that they were going to be this nervous.
This is mainly because Rigby is telling someone who likes him that he likes Mordecai, and Mordecai is telling someone that his affections for her were simply a distraction and were entirely fake. They knew that they would have to muster up a bit of courage in order to get through this.
Eventually, Eileen returned with Margaret right next to her. Margaret sat across Mordecai and said, "Hey, guys. Eileen said that you have something to tell us. Seems pretty urgent."
"Yeah, we do," Mordecai said. "It's kind of a lot to take in, so we don't mind if you guys freak out for a little bit."
"Geez, Mordecai," Margaret said with a somewhat scared tone. "Sounds really serious. You're starting to scare me."
"Well, you see-…"
"Mordecai and are in a relationship," Rigby said quickly, cutting Mordecai off."
"Rigby!" Mordecai yelled.
"What do you want me to do, Mordecai?" Rigby asked, concerned that he upset Mordecai. "We don't want this to be dramatic. It's better to say it straight-up." Rigby returned his gaze to Margaret and… Eileen? Rigby looked around and noticed that Eileen was no longer at the table. "Where did Eileen go?"
"Uh, Rigby…" Margaret said, pointing behind Rigby.
Rigby turned around and saw that Eileen was walking towards the kitchen, trying her best to keep herself from tearing up. Rigby frowned. He didn't want to upset Eileen, even though he never had feelings for her in the first place. Rigby turned around to face Margaret again.
"What's that all about?" Mordecai asked.
"Well, you both might already know that Eileen has a thing for Rigby," Margaret responded. "Well, when Rigby moved in with her, she got all excited about being with you every night." Margaret looked down to the table. "She told me that she was going to ask you on a date tonight. I didn't have the heart to tell her that you didn't like her back."
"Wait, you knew that I didn't like Eileen?" Rigby asked.
"Of course I did. You make it so obvious. You never respond to any of her compliments or anything like that. It's actually kind of rude."
"Oh… well, I'm sorry," Rigby said with a frown. Mordecai tried his best to comfort Rigby by rubbing his back. It helped a little. Rigby thought for a second and looked back up to face Margaret. "I guess you know what I'm going to say next, right?"
"You're moving out of Eileen's apartment and quitting your job here at the coffee shop?" Margaret said sullenly.
Rigby nodded. "Yeah, that's right. I hope I didn't cause the both of you too much trouble in the past couple days."
Margaret shook her head. "No, there was no trouble at all, Rigby. You made the coffee shop kind of fun for the past couple of days, and I know that you made Eileen extremely happy." Margaret placed a hand on Rigby's. "She's going to take some time to recover from this, but I'll make sure that she gets back on track. I can even find her some new boys."
"You're really awesome, Margaret," Rigby said with a smile. "No wonder Mordecai used you as a fake crush."
Margaret raised an eyebrow. "What was that?"
"Oh, nothing!" Mordecai exclaimed as he punched Rigby lightly on the shoulder. Mordecai grabbed Rigby and said, "It was nice talking to you, Margaret. We'll probably be back later for our usual afternoon coffee."
"I look forward to it," Margaret said with a smile. Mordecai started to walk out when Margaret stopped them for a second. "Hey Mordecai?"
Mordecai turned around. "Yeah?"
"You and Rigby make a cute couple," Margaret said with a sincere smile.
Mordecai smile and Rigby couldn't hold back his blush. Mordecai said, "Thanks. I think we are, too." They exited the coffee shop and headed back to the park.
"Wow, dude," Mordecai started. "Thanks for the save back there. I probably would've started stuttering or something if I were the one breaking the news."
"Oh, it's no problem, dude," Rigby responded. "Besides, I think it worked out pretty well."
"Yeah, I think so, too." Mordecai looked around before looking back at Rigby. "Except for Eileen, I guess. She seemed really upset."
Rigby frowned. "Yeah, I know. She was the only girl that ever liked me and I led her on for such a long time just to turn her down."
"Don't be so hard on yourself, dude. She'll find another boy that she can like," Mordecai said, trying to cheer Rigby up.
"Maybe, but it's not going to happen anytime soon. I mean, I basically broke her for any other gu-…" Rigby stopped for a second, a revelation popping up in his head.
Mordecai immediately noticed when Rigby stopped. He turned around and said, "Uh… you okay?"
"Dude, dude, I have a brilliant idea about fixing Eileen."
Mordecai chuckled. "Alright, dude. Calm down. What is it?"
"Alright, you're going to think this is awesome," Rigby said excitedly. "Eileen actually has an ex-boyfriend named Henry. She broke up with him three years ago for no particular reason, but he still really likes her. I can totally get them back together again."
"Mmhmm," Mordecai thought to himself. "That sounds cool, dude, but what makes you think that Eileen wants to get back together with this Henry person. How would you go about bringing them back together?"
"I can just tell Henry about everything that made Eileen like me. He can use that as is way in."
"How are you going to find him, though? It's not like you know this guy personally."
"He goes to the coffee shop every afternoon. We must have seen at least a hundred times. I only recognized him because I saw him in a picture in Eileen's apartment."
"Really?" Mordecai asked with a surprised tone. "Do you really think this is going to work, Rigby? I don't want you going through the trouble just for this to fail."
"It'll work, I promise. We'll come back to the coffee shop this afternoon and the plan will be set into motion."
Mordecai smiled and chuckled. He picked Rigby up and placed him on top of his shoulder. "Sounds like a good plan, dude. Now let's get to work in a place that you belong."
"Yeah," Rigby said as Mordecai walked the both of them into the gates of the park.
After working for a few hours, Mordecai were given their lunch break. They quickly scurried over to the coffee shop and slowly entered the door. Rigby looked around and noticed that everything was actually as it should be. Margaret was at the cash register, Eileen was in the kitchen, and Henry was sitting at his usual table, drinking his coffee.
"Oh, dude. This can't be any more perfect," Rigby said as he began walking towards Henry.
Mordecai placed a feathered hand in front of Rigby. "No, dude. There's going to be a slight change of plan." He pulled out a folded-up note.
Rigby eyed the note. "What's that?"
"I did a little experiment on girls in high school. There was a group of them that really didn't like me, and I wanted to see how easily I could get them to fall in love with me." Mordecai waved the note in front of Rigby. "So I wrote this note and had it sent their way. By the next day, I noticed each of them blush whenever they looked at me. One of them eventually asked for my number."
"Okay. One, how did I not know about this and two, what's on this magic note on yours?"
"Well…" Mordecai blushed and put his hand behind his head in embarrassment. "That was around the time when I started to really like you. So I always got them off my back whenever you were around. And the note… I'll show you one day. Now's not the time."
Rigby blushed a bit. "That's really sweet of you, Mordecai. I've never had someone push aside girls for me ever." He hugged Mordecai and said, "You do what you have to do."
Mordecai nodded. He and Rigby walked up to the cash register and smiled at Margaret.
"Hey guys," Margaret started. "Would you like the usual?"
Mordecai shook his head. "We decided against coffee today. But, on our way in here, this one guy asked us to hand something over to Eileen." He handed Margaret the note. "I guess he was too shy to give it to her himself."
"Oh," Margaret said as she grabbed the folded note. "Do you know what it says?"
Mordecai shook his head again. "No, not at all. But the guy, Henry, made it seem really important that Eileen gets it." Mordecai looked down to Rigby and whispered, "Why don't you give Henry some company for a second?"
Rigby nodded and scurried off to talk to Henry. He sat across from him and said, "Hey, dude."
Henry looked up from the table and said, "Oh, hi Rigby. I heard that you don't work here anymore. Did something happen?"
Rigby shook his head. "No, nothing happened. It's pretty complicated, but I'm happy with how things turned out."
"That's good, Rigby. You've been nice to me, so it's nice to see that you're happy too." Henry took another sip of his coffee before eventually saying, "I hate to ask, but do you have any news for me about Eileen? You've given me a little bit of hope."
"I think things are going to be in your favor, Henry. Something tells me that Eileen got some kind of notice from you, and she's going to be falling in your arms."
"What the heck does that mean?" Henry asked.
"Just roll with it," Rigby replied. "I suggest that yo-…" Rigby was cut off by an unexpected voice.
"Hey Rigby. Hey Henry."
Henry quickly looked up to see Eileen. She hadn't called him by his name since they broke up. "H-hey E-Eileen."
Eileen smiled a little at Henry. "Uh Rigby, I know you just got here, but do you think that you can give me and Henry a minute alone."
Rigby smiled. "Sure thing, Eileen. I was just on my way out, anyways." Rigby got up from the table and pointed at Henry. "Henry, like I said. Just roll with it." He walked away and went outside where Mordecai was already looking through a window.
"Dude, you should've seen Eileen when she read the note. I didn't know that people could turn that red."
Rigby chuckled. "I must admit that you performed some kind of magic. She came over to us pretty quickly."
"Oh, dude, dude. They're both smiling!"
Rigby stood next to Mordecai and stared through the window as well. They were talking happily until something amazing happened. Eileen leaned forward and kissed Henry.
Rigby looked over at Mordecai and said, "Dude…we just brought love to other people's lives."
Mordecai smiled. "They're not the only ones, Rigby."
Rigby lowered his legs and pounced onto Mordecai's stomach. He embraced him in a warm, tight hug. Mordecai did the same.
Mordecai then lifted Rigby up and they eventually locked lips. This kiss, however, wasn't like the first ones. They had somehow made a special connection that day, and this in turn made them feel closer. That's why Mordecai and Rigby were so "magical" together. And they continued to be magical together.
Epilogue
Things turned out for the best in the end. Mordecai and Rigby continued to work at the park for several years, not because they couldn't find another job, but because they didn't want another job. They worked hard when they were together, which was always, and this made Benson proud to be their boss. This doesn't mean that they didn't stop their crazy shenanigans, though most of the included making out behind a tree or a bush.
After three years of dating, Mordecai went down on one knee and proposed to Rigby. Rigby was aghast, not knowing if he would ever get married in his lifetime. Though, he knew that things were definitely working for him when he was with Mordecai. He said yes, and they planned their wedding to be held six months from Mordecai's proposal.
Mordecai made Benson his best man and Rigby made Henry his best man. Since this wasn't a traditional wedding, Mordecai and Rigby also had Margaret and Eileen as maids-of-honor.
In the following years, Mordecai and Rigby didn't change at all. The wedding was just a way to make their relationship official. They both agreed that working at the park was the best thing that they could do, since they wanted to work together. They even took ownership of the park when Benson needed to pass it on.
They didn't have any kids of their own, but they were Uncle Mordecai and Uncle Rigby when Margaret and Eileen had kids with their husbands. Mordecai and Rigby in their older years figured that their lives would've been better with kids, but they were still very much happy with each other. And they only continued to get happier with each other as the years went on.
