-I need you to run point for today. - Hailey told Jay while she approached his desk. The bullpen was empty except for the two of them.
They had been working non stop for almost a week since the last shooting against the police had happened, but the trace had gone cold and they had only managed to get a few more names, nothing solid on the whereabouts of the main suspect.
-We'll be fine. I'll call you if anything comes up. -Jay told her.- Why don't you take two days off? The Chief will understand Hailey. -
-We'll see. Please call me if anything comes up. But I trust you. - she told him with a slight smile on her face. If anyone understood it was him.
She put on her jacket and headed back outside, to drive to Chicago Med.
The last few days had been tiring, and to add the stress that Olivia had gone through when she had found out that her father had been shot. It had taken a lot of promises that Hailey would make sure Adam was ok and safe, and even a little scolding from mother to daughter to assure that Olivia stayed in Paris and finished her trip without any problems. Father and daughter had been facetiming almost three times a day to keep the teenager calm, but Adam was perfectly happy with it.
Hailey parked her car in front of the hospital, and shook her head at already seeing Adam sat on a wheelchair at the entrance.
-He insisted. - Will told her smiling.
-I'm sure. - she said turning her eyes towards Adam. - A little eager to get out of here, aren't we? - Hailey told him.
Adam nodded, standing up from the chair. - Ready. Been ready for a week. - he said smiling at her.
Hailey took Adam's bag from Will and looked back at him. - Thank you for everything. -
-I'd be happy not to do this again. Follow the instructions Rhodes gave you, Ruz. -Will told them before heading back inside.
Ruzek nodded, turning back towards Hailey. - Do I get a good morning kiss? -he joked.
-I already saw you this morning. - she told him while they walked towards the car.
-Yeah, but this would be like a proper good morning kiss, not like the one you gave me before leaving. -
She opened the passengers door for him and helped him get in, standing next to him. - Hi. - she said looking at him. - I'm really glad you get to home today. -
-I'm going home to you. Literally. - he said smiling even more than her, as if that was possible. They had agreed that while he recovered he would stay with Hailey. She had already considered the idea, but Olivia had insisted on it.
Hailey got closer to him to give him a peck on the lips. -We'll go slow ok? -
He nodded. - Yes, to everything you want. - he told her, grabbing her hand with his own. He knew they had a long way to go, and getting shot wasn't in his plans, but he would take advantage of every moment with Hailey.
She let a breath out, smiling. - Let's go home. -
Hailey got in the driver's seat and started the car. - Did Dr. Rhodes add anything to the list he gave us this morning? -
Adam shook his head. - Just told me to take easy. I have to be back here in a week, and he thinks I can get back to work in three.-
-He said six right? -she asked looking back at him.
-Who's counting? -Adam joked shrugging his shoulders, which earned him another glare from Hailey.
-I am. -she told him. - He told us that you needed help for a week, so I'll stay today and tomorrow. And then Kate offered to stay with us while I work. -
-Doesn't she have to work? -
-She can work from home. -Hailey explained him.
-And two more weeks and Liv is back. -
-Yeah. -
-She told me I can crash in her room while she's not there. -
-We have a perfect guest room downstairs where you don't have to walk a set of stairs. -
-I didn't know that. -
-I did a renovation on the house last year. -
Adam nodded, but other than that he stayed quiet, until Hailey pulled the car up on her driveway.
She helped him get out of the car and later on, she grabbed his bag from the backseat to follow him into the house. The blonde opened the front door, and led him to the bedroom that was near the living room.
-Do you like it? - she asked him turning on the lights.
Adam nodded, walking up to bed and sitting there. - It's really good, Hales. Thanks.-
She noticed the tiredness in his face, and put his bag on a chair. -Do you want something to eat? -
-I had an early lunch at the hospital, I'm good. -he said trying to lay down smoothly on the bed. He rested his head on the pillow and looked back at her. - Would you lay down with me? -
Hailey let out a deep breath, and took of her jacket. Adam was wearing sweatpants and a hoodie, all very comfortable clothes. She was in jeans and t-shirt now.
She laid down on her side on the bed, facing him. - You ok? Any pain? -
-Not now. - he said, knowing he sounded cheesy but he couldn't help it. He had been waiting for times like these.
Hailey's phone started ringing and she took it out to see that it was Olivia facetiming her. She sat up on the bed, laying her back against the headboard.
-Hey, peanut. - she said, after touching the screen to answer her.
-Hey! Are you guys home already? -the teenager asked, looking at her parents on the screen.
-We are. - Hailey said, putting the phone on her hand so that Olivia could see both of her parents.
-Hey bug. -Adam told her, waving a hand.- Is Paris not exciting enough that you're calling your old parents all day? -he joked, and smiled at seeing Olivia shaking her head.
-We are in London actually. We're going to stay here for a couple of days.-
Both Hailey and Adam nodded. - That's good, Liv. Is the hotel ok? -
-It's actually the house of one of Aunt Lily's friends from college. She has a nice place. - Liv told them. - How are you feeling Dad? -
-I'm good. Your mother is keeping me on a straight line.-
Olivia smiled. - Good. Just two more weeks and I'll be there to help her. -
-We can't wait for that. - Hailey told her.
-Aunt Lily is back. We're heading out. -
-Have fun, Liv. We love you. - Hailey told her before hanging up.
-Bye Mom, bye Dad!-
-She looks like she's having fun. - Adam said looking back at Hailey.
She nodded, laying back on the bed, trying to hide a yawn.
It wasn't long before she fell asleep, feeling the safe and quiet next to Adam.
A couple of hours later, she opened her eyes, to find that she had curled up next to Adam, and he had an arm around her waist, hiding his face on her hair.
She looked up at him and his brown eyes were focused on her. -Did you sleep too? -
-A little. - he replied in a raspy voice.
-Sorry, I didn't realize I was so tired.-
-Well, that's because you don't get enough rest, do you? -Adam said giving her a kiss on the forehead.
Hailey smiled at him.- I'm going to make lunch, and you can have a bite, ok? -
He nodded, letting her go.
Around half an hour later, they were snuggled in the couch eating chinese food from the containers. - I thought you said you were going to cook.-
-I only cook when Liv is around. You know I hate it. -she told him cleaning her face with a napkin.
Adam shook his head, pushing at her leg with his foot.-Yeah, that's mainly my thing.-
-Yeah, I never hear enough about Dad's amazing roast beef, or his famous grilled sandwiches.-she said joking after hearing him.
Adam laughed at listening to her. -Well, a kid can only eat so much pizza at Mom's right? -
-Well, when Mom has a full time job and Dad is always away undercover…-
-Hey hey.. I know. You did an amazing job with her. -Adam assured her, and Hailey focused her look on his eyes. She still had some healing to do regarding the past.
-Where is he? -Olivia asked Hailey after meeting her mother outside the school.
The ten year old girl kept her eyes on her mother, and Hailey finally shook her head. - He must be stuck on assignment, peanut. Come on. -
-I want to call him. -Olivia said.
-We have to go back Liv, I have to get to work. -Hailey had barely been able to run from the office, and she was only there because her partner was covering her.
Olivia shook her head. -If you're going to work, where am I going? -
-I have to finish up on a case and then we'll go home. You can sit on my desk in the meantime. -
The little girl finally nodded, taking of the jacket that she had worn on the school play she had just finished. - Can I call Dad from your office? -
Hailey nodded, getting her daughter on the car. - Sure.-
They rushed to the Homicides bullpen, and though Hailey didn't like bringing her daughter there, sometimes she didn't have much choice.
-Stay here. Maggie will keep an eye on you. - she said to her daughter. The police officer named Maggie smiled at the little girl, while Hailey headed to finish an interrogation.
-Hey Olivia. Nice to meet you. -
-Hello. - Olivia told her, sitting down on her mother's chair.- My mom said I could call my Dad from here. Can I use this phone? -
-Sure. Do you know his number? -
Olivia shook her head. - He works in Intelligence. -
-Oh.. ok. Can you tell me his name? We can try their office. -Maggie offered.
-Adam. Adam Ruzek. -
-Ok. - Maggie dialing the number of the Intelligence offices. - Hello, this is officer Margaret Becks from Robbery and Homicide. May I speak with Detective Adam Ruzek? -she waited for an answer. She was afraid he wouldn't be there, but smiled at hearing the answer. - They are transferring me to him, here you go. -Maggie told her passing the phone to Olivia.
-This is Detective Ruzek. -Adam said on the other side of the line.
-So you're just at the office? You're not undercover or on any assignment? - Olivia asked over the phone. She was well aware of her parent's jobs and she knew what they did everyday.
-Olivia? Where are you? -he asked surprised.
-Mom said you were probably too busy, but I guess you just didn't remember. -she said before hanging up.
-Olivia, are you ok? - Maggie asked her, feeling sorry for the little girl.
Before she could answer, Hailey came back to the office. - Liv, let's go. - she said grabbing her bag from the desk. -Is everything ok? - she asked looking between her and Maggie. -
-Yeah. It was nice to meet you Maggie. - she said standing up to walk towards the exit.
Almost an hour later, Hailey was standing in front of her door looking at her daughter's father.-I'm sorry Adam, she doesn't want to see you. And I'm not forcing her. -she said seeing that Kim was sitting on the passengers side on Adam's car which was parked across the street.
-I'm her father. -Adam warned her.
-And she's a 10 year old person who you disappointed again today. I'm not putting your needs over hers. -Hailey said, not moving an inch from her place.
-Let me in. -Adam told her.
-No. Call us tomorrow. Maybe she'll want to see you then. Don't forget that temper is all Ruzek . - she said before closing the door on him.
-I know. - Hailey told him, letting the memories get away from her. - We'll be fine. - she told him, trying to enjoy the quietness of the day she had with him.
Adam moved slightly towards her, and surrounded her shoulders with one of his arms, squeezing her against him.
Hailey placed her chin on his shoulders and looked at him. - I promise you, we'll be fine.-
-Would it be too much to ask? -he inquired in a whisper.
-What is? -
-A lifetime of this. You, me and the kid. - he said, regretting not realizing sooner what Olivia and Hailey meant to him. All the good times he had missed or all the time he had wasted not being there.
-No, it's not. - she assured him with a smile on her face.
-I missed you. I feel like I've been missing you for a long time. - he told her.
Hailey sat a little straighter, facing him, and got closer until their faces were inches apart.
She kissed him, trying to pour into it all of the feelings she had for him. Adam held her by her waist with one of his arms and Hailey's hands found the way to his neck.
He let out a pleased hum and Hailey abruptly ended the kiss.
-Woah woah, what's wrong? -he asked without letting go of her.
-Remember Rhodes instructions? No physical activity. -
-I think kissing is quite alright. -he said in between kisses he gave her on the neck.
-Adam…-she whispered, and she looked at him. - You have to get better. And I think this time would be good. -
He let a breath out, releasing her at last. - Fine, whatever you want babe. -
She smiled at him, giving him back his food container. - Lunch? -
-Lunch. - he repeated smiling at her.
