Chapter 7—The Angel of Light
Casa Bartowski
Ellie and Devon had their mouths open in awe. But Devon was sure this might not be awesome. The Premier was studying Chuck. With a growing more and more serious look, the Premier was now muttering, "You. You…" The Costa Gravas guards were now taking an offensive stance and Casey's men were bringing their weapons to ready.
Casey stayed in the apartment and got one of the sniper rifles. He was positioning himself at one of the windows. Sarah was on the stairs reaching for her Sig. She was now heading for Chuck. Mary, Lea, Vera, Eldie and their teams were lining the balcony with their weapons out.
At about the same time Ellie tried to defuse the situation by saying, "That's my brother."
Chuck looked over everything and said the same again, "Whoa, whoa, wait a minute." He quickly shook him head, "Not now guys."
The Premier took it all in. He looked at Mary and the teams and Casey's men. He started to smile bigger than he had at Devon.
Chuck turned to the Premier as Casey's men and Mary and the teams stood down. The Premier saw it all. Chuck caught a look at Casey in the window and moved to position himself between him and the Premier. Sarah held her weapon waiting to see a reciprocal move from Premier Goya's men.
The Premier snapped to attention, "Saludamos al hombre más grande!" The Premier raised his hand in salute and held it.
Chuck was looking him in the eye and knew what he needed to do. He came to attention just like he'd seen Casey do. He raised his hand and gave a salute back.
The Premier walked quickly to Chuck. He held his arms wide open, "You must be the Angel of Light." His arms wrapped around Chuck.
Chuck saw Sarah coming even with him and tilted his head in wonder at Sarah. He could not imagine what was happening. Devon had saved the Premier, not him.
The Premier stepped back, "You are Charles Bartowski." He smiled when Chuck nodded. "You saved my niece, Olga Zenkas, and hundreds of our countrymen. We know what happened. My little Olie came home to us last week. We know it was through your intervention that she is not in the hands of those," with hatred, "animales asquerosos." He spat on the ground. "We'd heard reports from our countrymen that you were behind those that freed them and watched in amazement at the last arrests. Those were you."
Chuck tried to hold back but a small smile had already started. His involvement wasn't exactly a nightly news item. He knew he should not let on, but it escaped before he could stop it.
"It was you. See I know these things." He looked at Sarah and smiled, "But of course, a very lovely lady."
Chuck immediately introduced her, "This is my wife Sarah."
While Sarah discretely put her Sig away, the Premier went on, "Just like mine, a fighter for her country and her man." He moved to give her a light kiss on each cheek. He looked back at Ellie, "What a family. Of course your brother and his wife are invited to the gala tonight." Then looking at Chuck and Sarah, "But you were already going to be there. Correct?"
"Yes," Chuck replied. He wondered whether it was that obvious.
"Fantastic! Once again, an honor to meet you all, until tonight." He saluted, turned, "Vámonos!" and walked out of the courtyard with his men following.
Ellie looked over at Chuck, "I can't believe this is happening! What did you do?"
Sarah answered, "Well, you and Devon know most of it. You treated many of the people we rescued. But Chuck did intervene and set up protection for two girls that had been rescued. Olga Zenkas was one of them. She is from Argentina, daughter of a deputy Ambassador to Columbia, and was captured in Colombia. She apparently is the niece of the Premier."
Chuck distractedly noted, "Okay, have to concentrate a little more on family connections in the model." Then he made the mistake of the day, "So, what are we going to wear?"
There was a loud shriek from Ellie and the rest of the afternoon went downhill from there.
Costa Gravas Consulate
Chuck's head was still a whirl. He could not remember exactly how many stores they visited, the number of dresses was beyond count. Sarah finally saved the day when they went to one of the stores she had been using. They found dresses for her, Ellie, Mary and Carina. Carina and the head of the protection details, Major 'Stan' Stanley, were the other couple to attend the reception.
Chuck, Devon, Doc and Stan were decked out in black tuxedos. Shirts and ties were impeccable. They walked into the Consulate escorting the women. Sarah's hair was drawn back in a fashionable bun with large diamond earrings and a low strap silver dress. Ellie's hair was done in a tight braid to the back of her head. She actually wore a dress that was a little more revealing than Sarah's. It was a low cut with an asymmetric neckline going to a wider strap over her left shoulder. Mary had a stunning blue beaded evening gown and Carina was in a dark green gown that hardly covered anything.
Chuck and Sarah were walking into the ballroom and Chuck looked over at Sarah, "I can't believe this is happening." They had time between getting the dresses and driving to the consulate to brief the Honorable John H. Wabash, the DNI. While he understood how the Premier could have gotten information about Chuck and their teams, he stressed the need for secrecy. Each of the invitees was to go armed but they were only to display their weapons if theirs or the Premier's life was in jeopardy. While the video feed went to the model processor for face recognition, Chuck was to perform the same function for anyone who came near the Premier. Chuck and his team were authorized to take extreme measures to neutralize the threat. The warning passed through the DNI, was to prevent any rebellion from starting on U.S. soil. Casey's already extensive protection details were doubled. Chuck was positive that they would be able to repulse a small army. Sarah had the Teams positioned in the front, back and overhead. Vera was covering the skies. She coordinated getting a protective zone around the consulate and was ensuring no news or photo hungry helicopter got close.
"Don't worry I am sure we can protect…" Just as Sarah was about to finished that thought, the Premier came up.
"Thank you so much for coming. It is an honor seeing you here." The Premier slightly bowed. Noticing the slight break in Chuck's jacket he smiled, "And thank you for that, but I think we have it well covered tonight. You may rest at ease."
As Chuck nodded, the Premier went past them to shake Devon's hand and admire Ellie.
"Wow, he never stops." Chuck watched the Premier go to Devon and Ellie and then the next couple. He just kept going welcoming everyone to the gala.
"Yes, and we must start looking around for potential threats," Sarah pointed at the chefs.
Chuck nodded and pointed to a table that looked big enough for their contingent. Sarah smiled agreeing with the position of the table with a clear view of the entire ballroom. She took her seat as Chuck assisted her. Chuck looked around at the Chefs and saw the knives and ice pick and caught the positions of the armed guards. He activated his ear phone, "Casey, do you have the guards?"
Casey was in a van outside the consulate. He wouldn't agree to stay back at the apartments or Castle. He pointed out that they were too far away for a quick response time. While Chuck agreed with the distance, he wondered at the reasoning. They had more than enough people on the protective details to cover it, but he relented and agreed. Casey looked at the console in the van, "Yeah, we got them at the doors with the metal detectors. Steven ran them through the model and nothing came up. The door in the back is uncovered with no guards."
Lea spoke into the net, "We got the back covered. No one has entered there for the past half hour and before that they were getting checked."
Sarah added, "I'll go check on the Premier." Sarah turned to look over the crowd.
Casey reminded, "Chuck, you're looking for potential assassins."
"Right Casey, that's the point." He walked around and caught up with Devon.
Devon seemed to be pumped for this and asked, "So, what's the plan? You take him out as soon as something starts?"
"No one is taking anyone out, " Chuck shook his head. "Remember, that's why we are here. So your mission is still keeping my sister, your wife, out of danger. You think you can handle that double O seven?"
Devon looked over at Ellie, "Hum, Chuck?"
The Premier had Ellie's hand and had just kissed it. He continued, "I can't take my eyes off of you. You must dance with me and stand next to me all night long."
Devon's eyes got very wide. "My wife is talking to the target of an assassination plot. We got to get her out of there. I'm going in."
"Awesome calm down. Let the professional handle this," Chuck pointed with his chin.
Sarah went over the Premier and Ellie, "I hope I am not interrupting?" She smiled at the Premier while she put a comforting hand on Ellie's back.
Ellie was happy getting out of the Premier's grip, "Sarah. No. No." She leaned into Sarah's hand.
The Premier smiled, "Ah ah, my doctor told me to avoid this stimulation." He pointed to Ellie and then his heart, "but then again my doctor is your husband."
Sarah still smiling and trying to get out of the ensnarement said, "But I am so sorry. I must borrow her for just a second, girl talk." The Premier smiled at them and went to another guest.
Devon still standing with Chuck said, "She's good."
"The best," was Chuck's response.
Ellie and Sarah went over to their table. Sitting together Ellie looked at Sarah, "Thank you for rescuing me. His cologne is almost WMD…. So, what did you want to talk to me about?"
Sarah just laughed looking over the crowd.
"I'm sorry. You want to talk about it?"
Sarah looked at Ellie, "What?"
"You know, you and Chuck…hum trying?"
A/N Okay as I mentioned last time there will be some new activities and maybe some twists. Hope you enjoy.
