A week past since that night, and luckily for Rachel, she didn't have that horrid dream again. In the past week she continued her lessons with Hank McCoy. This is something she quickly learned to look forward to. She enjoyed working and talking with someone as intelligent as Dr. McCoy.
She also continued her testing with Professor Xavier. This she didn't look forward to. She wanted to learn more about her mutant ability, but she felt that the tests were a bit too long and tedious.
Also in the past week, Rachel spoke more with some of the students and got to know them a bit better. One particular student she's taken a liking to is Kitty Pryde. They both have genius level IQs. That may be why they get along so well. Rachel thought it was splendid to be able to have an intelligent conversation with someone as young as Kitty.
Rachel sat at a table in Hank McCoy's office, reading a chapter of a book he asked her to read. Hank had gone downstairs to get something to drink, so he wasn't with her at the moment. She was having trouble concentrating on what she was reading, so she decided to give her eyes a break from the words on the page in front of her, and looked out the window to her right. It was a beautiful day outside. The sky was clear with a deep shade of blue. Rachel was entranced by the scenery of blue sky mixed with green treetops. She began humming a song she heard on the radio as she drifted into a daydream.
Hank returned a moment later, and as he walked through the door he stopped and stared wide-eyed. For he saw musical notes dancing mellifluously around Rachel. It was another one of her illusions.
"Rachel?" Hank said, trying to get her attention. It didn't work, she just kept on humming. "Rachel," he said a bit louder.
The illusion disappeared as Rachel sat up from her slouched over position. She turned in the direction where Hank was standing, and anxiously said, "I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. What were you saying?"
"Rachel, that was beautiful," Hank said.
"Oh, no, Sir. My singing is terribly off key," said Rachel.
"No, not that. The illusion."
Rachel looked around the room and said, "Uh, what illusion?"
"The one that was just there."
"But I thought I could only do that in my sleep."
Hank thought for a moment, then said, "You're able to cast your dreams into illusions while you sleep. Could it be possible that you can cast your daydreams into illusions as well?"
"Was it that obvious that I was daydreaming?" asked Rachel.
"As obvious as the hair on my face," Hank retorted.
Later the two met with Professor Xavier and explained what had happened. The professor told them that their theory is possible. Then they began testing as usual. This time they tested their daydream theory. The theory was successfully confirmed.
After the testing was done for the day, Rachel went down to the kitchen to get something to eat. She heated up some spaghetti, then sat down at the table. She opened one of the books Hank had given her and read as she ate.
To her left Kitty had phased her head through the wall. When she saw Rachel she exclaimed, "Hey!"
Rachel looked over at Kitty then jumped in her seat. She placed a hand over her heart, and said, "Kitty, you have to stop popping out of nowhere like that. You startled me!"
"Sorry, I didn't mean to. But really, if you think about it, I didn't really pop out of nowhere. I just walked through that wall. So technically I popped out of somewhere," Kitty said jokingly.
"All right. You don't have to be so logical about it," Rachel laughed.
"So what are you reading there?" Kitty asked as she took a seat next to Rachel.
"It's a book about dream analysis. Hank gave it to me. He told me when he found it he thought of me," said Rachel.
"How sweet," said Kitty.
The two continued chatting for a while. And as Rachel stood to put her empty dish in the sink, Kitty said, "There's something I've been meaning to ask you."
"What is it?" asked Rachel.
"Do you have a boyfriend?" asked Kitty.
"No," Rachel answered simply.
"Then is there a guy here that you like?" asked Kitty.
"Oh, wouldn't you like to know?"
Kitty's question reminded Rachel of her friend and erstwhile roommate, Stephanie. If Stephanie were here she'd probably ask the same thing, thought Rachel.
"Come on, Rachel. You can tell me, I'm good at keeping secrets," Kitty said, attempting to persuade her friend.
"Like I would tell you," Rachel said teasingly.
"So there is a guy that you like?" Kitty asked.
"Maybe, Maybe not."
"Oh, come on! Tell me!" Kitty begged.
"Oh, all right," Rachel said, finally giving in. "Maybe there is a guy that I like."
As Rachel said this Logan was approaching the kitchen door, but stopped when he heard her say it. He stood at the side of the door so he could listen.
"So who is it?" Kitty asked.
"Promise to keep it a secret?" Rachel asked. She was beginning to feel like a teenager again.
"Cross my heart," Kitty said, drawing an imaginary X over her heart with her index finger.
"It's Scott," Rachel confessed.
"Scott? Scott Summers?" asked Kitty.
"Yeah."
It figures, Logan thought as he grumbled softly to himself.
"Hasn't anyone told you? Scott's engaged to Jean," said Kitty.
"Really? Sucks for me, then." Though she sounds indifferent about the situation, she's actually disappointed.
"Well, you know what? I think Logan likes you," said Kitty.
Logan tensed up at this.
"Really? Why do you think that?" asked Rachel.
"I'm pretty sure I've been sensing an I-like-Rachel vibe from him."
"Oh, really? Is that another one of your mutant abilities?"
"Hey! Logan's a nice guy, you know. You two would make a great couple."
Maybe if I'm lucky, half-pint here can win her over for me, thought Logan.
"I know he's a nice guy. And I do like him. It's just that I'm not in like with him. You know?"
I guess I'm not so lucky.
"Oh well. Who knows? Maybe you'll warm up to him over time," said Kitty.
"Yeah, maybe," said Rachel.
Here's hoping that she does, thought Logan. Having heard all that he wanted to hear, he walked away from the door, leaving the two girls to their conversation.
"So what about you Kitty? Is there a certain someone that you fancy? I've seen the way you look at that Piotr kid," said Rachel.
"Oh, would you look at the time. Gotta go!" Kitty said before phasing right through the floor.
