Love's Twin Tails

Chapter 7: What's that slime?

As the wind gently caressed Sonic's cheek it brought the vivid and light scents of fresh grass mixed with those of sprightly flowers growing in the fields. The blue hedgehog lay under a strong willow tree, its vine-like branches swayed gently with the breeze.

Sonic seemed to be in a calm slumber, breathing lightly with his eyes closed; he looked quite serene. He would often lie under a tree in such a way that most people thought he was sleeping or resting from running around so much but, the truth was, Sonic wasn't sleeping. He was thinking. The laid-back hedgehog would often ponder about a plethora of subjects while lounging around.

It's been a couple of hours, thought Sonic, I'm sure he's finished by now.

These days, his mind mostly ran thoughts about a certain two tailed fox. Sonic couldn't help but think about him, although, there was something that bothered him. The hedgehog would often wonder about their future together, such as, if they'll be accepted or if they'll last together as lovers and so on. Sometimes those thoughts would begin to crowd his mind but Sonic had a simple solution for that, he would begin to run. Running would always help to shed his mind from any thought, much like an eagle pushing away its old feathers to make room for new ones.

Maybe I should go check on him? Wondered Sonic, his patience was growing thinner by the minute as his desire to see Tails was getting too big for its cage. I want to show him the surprise now!

The hedgehog slowly opened his eyes and stared at the flowing willow branches. A few hours had passed since Marine came and hauled Tails away from him, on the clandestine lovers' first kissing spot.

What if he hasn't finished? Questioned Sonic, I don't want to interrupt him and he certainly doesn't need my help with engineering… hmm… Sonic felt like something was amiss.

Needing my help?

Suddenly, it came back to him.

Amy's house!

The hedgehog's heartbeat began to pace faster with a small flash of anxiety as he quickly stood up. He remembered how Amy's shrill furious cry pierced his ears from far away. Sonic also remembered the terrible state that Amy's house was in. His gaze drooped slowly downward as a blatant sigh escaped from his lips.

"I suppose I should take some responsibility," Sonic hesitated, as he convinced himself, "and help clean up…" His lungs filled to the brim with one last breath of fresh grassland air, and then, in a blink of an eye, he was making his way toward Amy's house.

Arriving at the house, Sonic could hear quite a bustle going on inside. He stood at the door for about a minute or two before deciding to place his fist on the painted wood to give a lurid knock.

Ponk!

Ponk!

Ponk!

Sonic waited for a minute, which seemed to last an eternity. His heart was pounding rapidly again and his hands were beginning to get clammy but, he tried to maintain a straight face. Sonic's ears picked up the sound of footsteps making their way towards the door. The gleaming brass doorknob began to wriggle and turn, soon after, the door creaked open.

"Hello?" a small voice beckoned, "A-Anyone there?" She was a small rabbit who stood confused at the entrance accompanied by a pale-cyan Chao flying above her. They both stepped outside, scrutinizing the terrain for anyone who might have knocked on the door.

"Chao chao?" mentioned the Chao, glancing down at Cream (the small rabbit girl).

"Maybe you're right, Cheese," Cream replied, making a slight frown yet looking a little dumbfounded. She placed a finger on her chin as she pondered a bit. "I guess I must've heard things…" she assumed, then shrugged it off. Cream's natural carefree smile sprung back on her face as she re-entered Amy's house. "Let's finish wiping down the ceiling!" she tittered.

Sonic, now, stood behind the house, leaning against the wall. He clutched his chest lightly and gave a sigh of relief. The hedgehog had jolted to the other side, without a second though, as soon as the gleaming brass doorknob began to wriggle.

"My mind was made up," he chuckled, quite sheepishly, "but I guess my legs weren't." The hedgehog made a subtle annoyed grunt as he mildly hit his legs with his fists, just above the knee. "C'mon guys," Sonic murmured, "it ain't that bad…" Soon, thoughts flooded his mind. He could see Amy's irritated face followed by that giant piko piko hammer. Sonic had felt Amy's wrath before and he certainly didn't want to go through it again.

The blue hedgehog gave a defeated sigh. He leaned back against the wall and slumped down. The wall provided a nice cooling shade for him and he felt somewhat comforted by it. Sonic closed his eyes and tried to relax once more. It seemed to be working but, there was a really faint propulsionary sound of rotors coming toward his direction. Sonic quickly recognized the familiar sound. He opened his eyes and sure enough, a certain two tailed fox was flying his way.

Something was not right though, Tails wasn't his usual color. The poor fox seemed to have an apprehensive look on his face; furthermore, his torso, chest, as well as parts of his face and head seemed to be covered in some sort of dark-mauve slime! Sonic quickly stood up, wide eyed and slightly appalled; he waited for the fox to reach him.
