I could feel Erin getting worked up beside me. I needed to get rid of Becky quick. This isn't good for Erin, especially while she is changing, and Becky was really starting to annoy me. I glanced over to Erin for just a second to see if she was okay. I was about to whisper to her to reassure her but Becky's squeal got my attention. The book she was holding burst into flames. She dropped it and backed up. I clicked my fingers quickly, pushing a shocked Erin behind me. Becky just looked at me with panic and confusion as the flames went out, leaving a blackened book on the table top. I mind-wiped her quickly and after she left I turned to Erin, looking more panicked then Becky had been. "Are you okay Erin?" I asked stepping towards her. She backed into the corner of the shelves, shaking slightly. "Erin..." I repeated cautiously. Books began to fly off the shelves and Erin became more distraught. One of the overhead lights blew out, shattering glass everywhere, and the windows were rattling by the force of the wind that had picked up inside the library. By now everyone had left the library. I crouched down in front of Erin who was now rocking back and forth trying to control whatever was happening. "Erin? Erin look at me," I whispered soothingly. She looked up and things started to calm down. "Come on, lets get out of here." I helped her stand up, grabbed both out bags then sped up to the throne room.
We sat in silence for a few minutes by the fire. As vampires we didn't feel the cold but the flicker of the flames was a good distraction. I held her tightly to me, my arm wrapped around her shoulder and her head resting gently against me.
"What happened?" she asked, her voice barely more then a whisper.
'I don't know," I replied softly "Maybe we should ask dad, or Betrand." I felt her nod slowly.
"Ask us what?" came dad's voice from behind us, I stood up and looked to see Betrand and Dad standing by the table"I thought you two were in... School," dad sneered that last part but I had no time to argue with him over school. I retold the story of what had happened in the library and was met with stunned silence. Erin kept quiet beside me, her fingers laced through mine.
"How can a Half-Fang possess that much power?" Dad asked Betrand, "You created her!" Betrand looked just as confused for a moment before replying, "I may have bit her but I didn't give her that power." More silence. Betrand looked as thought he was in deep thought before he rushed out of the room. He reappeared a minute later with a battered old book.
"What is that?" I asked, not really having the patience to deal with more reading assignments.
"There was a prophecy," Betrand began as he flicked throught the pages of the book.
"There's a surpirse," mumbled Erin, traces of her old snile im her eyes. I smirked back, but Betrand didn't seem to notice, or he was just too absorbed in finding this 'prophecy' to care.
"Here it is," He contiuned as if uninterupted, "The prophecy of the Chosen One." "We know that one, but how is it suppose to help Erin?" I asked, confused as to why he was bringing up my prophecy again.
"But it goes on to talk about..." Betrand trailed off as he scanned the page, "The one with the power to match the Chosen One. The prophecy speaks of an equal, a partner that doesn't fear the Chosen One. It was told there would be another vampire with powers like the Chosen One who is to rule the vampire world by his side. It was always believed that when the Chosen One was revealed, his equal will also be revealed." "Why didn't you tell me this before?" I asked.
"Well when I came here and nobody else with your kind of power showed up, I assumed that part of the prophecy was false. False prophecies happen more then you think. So either the prophecy was wrong or the vampire didn't have the power yet. Why do you think you haven't been pushed into a marriage yet. Vampires of power are usually married or at least betrothed by your age. I..." I stopped Betrand there. This was too much information for me to take in, let alone Erin. Her grip on my hand was now vice-like.
"So we couldn't have known because she wasn't a vampire when Vladdy got his powers?" Dad said excitedly, as if he just figured it out on his own.
"I said enough!" I yelled, the room shaking slightly as I spoke. Erin had slipped from my grasp, she backed away slowly. I could see in her eyes that she was trying to figure this out justvas I was. The prophecy couldn't mean her could it? She was never meant to be a vampire, she wasn't born as one. I could hear Malik (who had come to see the 'drama') sniggering from the corner of the room, I ignored him and focussed on Erin. "Erin are you okay?" I asked gently.
"Of course I am. Why wouldn't I be, I've just been handed my fate to me on a silver platter!" she snapped. Her eyes were black and a flash of lightening zapped past the window. She shook her head, her eyes returning to their usual softness. "Sorry," she mumbled. I hugged her close.
"It's okay, we'll figure this out together, like we always do," I said, quoting her from earlier. I felt her smirk against my shoulder.
"Well one thing is for certain," Dad said, interupting the peaceful quiet, "She will have to start training right away."
