Klaus frowned as he entered the room, and shook his head. "You can't go."

Caroline smiled, and shook her head, as she slipped on her over coat. "Nik, I can't rearrange it." She stated, turning to face him.

He groaned, and stepped towards her, pulling her hair from her collar, and watched it fall over her shoulders. "Caroline…"

She smiled, and placed her hand over his mouth. "I know. I hate it too." She remarked, her eyes searching his.

He reached up, and grasped her wrist. "Call me if there is anything…" He began, and she nodded.

"It's just a check-up, Klaus." She stated, placing her free hand on her stomach.

"You're finding out the gender, Caroline. It's more than just a check-up." He returned, his voice nearly choking on emotion.

She smiled, and leaned forward to kiss his lips, softly. "I'll be alright." She whispered, though her voice held her concern. Since losing the baby little over a year ago, Caroline had been cautious, so was Klaus.

Today was no different. Since Bonnie had been attacked, Klaus had kept an extra eye on his wife and son, and now, she was going for her doctor's appointment, alone.

He didn't like it, but Kol had called at the last minute, and wanted to come over. Klaus had found it strange, for the simple reason that Kol hadn't left Bonnie's side for over a week, since she was poisoned.

Klaus swallowed, and lowered his eyes to his wife's expected stomach. He hadn't missed an appointment with her, and today, he was going to. He hated it.

"I know you hate it, Nik, but since we lost… since I…" She began her voice breaking.

Klaus grasped her face in his hands, and leaned forward to gaze into her eyes. "It wasn't your fault, Caroline, and yes, I do hate not going with you, and it's not because I'm protective." He began, watching her closely. "It's because I want to be with you every step of the way."

She smiled, her tears building in her eyes. "I know, Nik. I want you there too." She returned, reaching up to grasp his wrists in a soft fashion. "I think about him all the time." She whispered, hearing him inhale sharply. "I think about how he would have turned two in a few months." She continued, as he rubbed his thumbs over her face.

"We'll always remember him, love." Klaus replied, stroking her face.

She smiled, and moved to become enveloped in his embrace. It was crazy to feel like this, but she never forgot their first child, and she knew he never did either. They loved the child they never knew, but the memory of what could have been was enough for them to carry on, and create the life growing inside her now.

"I better go." She whispered, nuzzling her face against his shoulder.

He sighed, and she felt his body tense a fraction. She moved to head to kiss his shoulder through his shirt, and finally lifted her head. She searched his eyes, and brushed her lips over his cheek, loving the feel of his scruff against her lips.

Klaus' eyes closed, and he sighed once more. "I don't like it, Caroline." He began, opening his eyes to find hers filled with concern. "Promise you will be careful." He stated, watching her nod, and the doorbell rang.

She turned her head, and he frowned, thinking it was Kol, but soon the door opened, and Katherine stepped through the threshold. He groaned, and Caroline nodded.

Caroline turned her head, and smiled, as she cupped his face with her hand. "I called her, so you wouldn't worry so much." She explained, watching Klaus relax. "Katherine will watch over me." She added, watching her husband carefully. "I love you, Niklaus." She whispered, stroking his face.

He grasped her hand, and kissed her palm. "I love you, Caroline." He returned, lifting his eyes to the woman who was avoiding the scene with disgust on her face. "Watch her, Katherine." He remarked, as Katherine turned her head to look at him.

"Always do." She returned, moving towards the door.

Klaus nodded, and his gaze softened as he looked at his wife. "I'll be here when you get back." He spoke to her softly.

She smiled, and brushed her lips over his. "Can't wait," She returned, gently, stepping back to move to her friend.

Klaus sighed, and watched with a heavy heart as she walked out the door with her friend, and gazed out of the front window as they drove away. Never in his life had he imagined this would happen. Him: Niklaus Mikaelson, the Hybrid, married, a father, an ally of Katherine Pierce. That last one seemed more plausible every day, especially since they had a common denominator: Caroline.

They loved Caroline, and would do anything to make sure she was safe, even though she had informed them time and again that she could take care of herself.

He smiled at the arguments that had ensued because of that simple statement. She had eventually relented to his protective stance, especially after she had reached her fourth month of pregnancy.

"Nik,"

Klaus broke out of his thoughts, turned, and he nodded. "Kol…"

Caroline sighed as she gazed out the window of the doctor's office. Her heart was heavy with missing him.

"If you don't snap out of your mood, I'm going to leave you here." Katherine stated, snapping Caroline out of her thoughts.

Caroline smiled, and turned her head to look at her friend. "I'm sorry. I just…" She began, placing her hand on her stomach.

Katherine followed her movements, and her features softened. "I know you want Klaus here, Care." She whispered, in a tone that only Caroline could hear.

Caroline nodded, and sighed. "He's never missed an appointment, and today was important." She remarked, bowing her head. "Kol wanted to meet with Nik." She returned, being careful no one was listening.

Katherine nodded, and kept her eyes focused in front of them. "Do you know why?" She asked, watching the other patients in the room.

"No, but Nik didn't like it." Caroline answered, lowering her eyes. "He thinks Kol may go after her." She whispered, in a sad tone.

Katherine jerked her head to the look at her friend, and her eyes widened. "Is he crazy?!" She nearly shouted, causing several people to look at them with curious expressions.

Caroline sent her friend a glare, and Katherine rolled her eyes, expressing to her friend that she didn't care at the moment.

"Kol can't face that bitch alone." Katherine stated, lowly this time. "If he does, then it would draw attention to our location, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let him put a target on my family." She growled out, her brown eyes flashing.

Caroline reached over and grasped her friend's hand. "Nik will talk him out of it, Kat." She remarked, when her cover name was called by the nurse. "That's me." She added, standing up, and smiled at her friend. "I'll be back in few."

Katherine nodded, and watched her pregnant friend waddle towards the nurse. Taking out her phone, she quickly sent a text to her contact, and waited.

Nobody was going to destroy this family.

"You do realize what you're asking, Kol." Klaus stated, turning to hand his brother a bottle of beer.

Kol nodded. "She came after the woman I love, Nik. She called war." He returned, setting the bottle on the counter with his head down. "She could have killed her, Nik. I could have lost Bonnie."

Klaus swallowed, and lowered his eyes. "If you do this then our family will be a target again."

"Nik, we're always a target!" Kol shouted, slamming his hands on the counter. "We're always running or planning a battle or God knows what else." He stated, his eyes holding so much pain and anguish. "If this had been Bill and he had come after Caroline, what would you do?" He asked, watching his brother's face darken.

"He did, Kol, and you know what I did." Klaus remarked, coldly.

Kol nodded, and leaned forward. "Then don't I deserve the same." He returned, holding his brother's eyes.

Klaus wanted to argue, but his brother was being logical. Too logical.

It was true. When Bill came after his wife, Klaus retaliated. He would do anything to protect his family. He knew Kol would do the same and it hurt him to see that.

"Okay," He whispered, turning from the kitchen counter. "Follow me."

"Well, Carol, are you ready?" Doctor Collins, a kind-hearted, red-haired, green eyed, doctor asked.

Caroline smiled, and nodded. "Ready as I'll ever be." She answered, happily, though she missed her husband by her side.

"Okay then, let's get started." Doctor Collins returned with a smile, and grabbed the jelly from the machine, and squirted some on Caroline's growing belly. "Where's Nick today? I don't think I've seen a more loving and attentive husband in here than yours." She asked, politely as she picked up the sonogram device.

Caroline smiled, though her eyes faded with small sadness. "He had a meeting he couldn't get out of." She answered, softly.

Doctor Collins smiled, in understanding. "Sometimes that happens. I bet he hates missing this. If you want, we can schedule for another time, when he can be here." She offered, gently.

Caroline shook her head. "No, he said to go ahead." She declined, with a soft smile.

Doctor Collins nodded, and placed the device on Caroline's stomach, and began to move it around. "Well, this is interesting."

Kol sighed as Klaus entered the small office in his home, and pulled open the top drawer.

"Tyler sent this by fax this morning. I thought you should see it." Klaus remarked, handing his brother the file.

Kol swallowed, and opened the file. "Son of a bitch," He muttered, lifting his eyes to his brother. "Is it true?"

Klaus nodded, and leaned against his desk with his feet crossing at the ankles and his arms over his chest. "He double checked, and it matches."

Kol's eyes flashed. "That bitch is Enzo's sister!"

Caroline bit her lip, and watched as the doctor moved the device over her stomach. "What is it? Is the baby…?"

"The baby is fine, Carol. In fact, they are both fine." Doctor Collins remarked happily.

Caroline's eyes widened. "Both?" She whispered, as the Doctor nodded to the nurse, who began to turn the screen around.

"Congratulations, Mrs. Swan." She repeated, carefully.

Caroline's eyes filled with tears as she gazed at the screen. "I knew it." She whispered, lifting her eyes to the ceiling. "I knew it."

"I want her dead, Nik!"

Klaus nodded and held out the gun to his baby brother. "If you want it done, you'll have to do it." He remarked, firmly, as Kol took the gun. "But before you do, think about Bonnie. What would she do?"

Kol lowered his head, and closed his eyes. Klaus was right. Bonnie would never forgive him if he committed murder in her name. "I don't want to end up like you, Nik." Kol remarked, lifting his head to find his brother's eyes narrowing. "I don't want to have that much blood on my hands, but Bonnie is my Caroline, brother." He stated, watching his brother swallow. "She is the only reason I have stayed on the right path for so long, and fought the demons that tried to pull me back." He continued, his eyes filling with tears.

Klaus bowed his head, and nodded. "Caroline is mine." He whispered, turning his head away.

Kol nodded, and stepped forward. "You've stayed strong for so long, Nik, but you were weak, like I was, until they came along." He remarked, gently, yet firmly. "With Caroline and Bonnie, we are stronger, but someone is trying to make us weak again." He continued, his eyes flashing. "I won't allow them to take away the only thing that has made my life complete."

Klaus sighed, and turned his eyes to his brother. "Do what you need to do, Kol, but…" He trailed off, when Kol shook his head.

"I'll think on it." He stated, backing up. "I have to get back to my wife." He added, turning and leaving Klaus in the room.

The gun was still on the coffee table.

Klaus sipped on the whiskey in his glass, and frowned as he thought of his brother's words. He would do anything to protect Caroline. He had done it before, and he would do it again. She was his light, his reason to get up in the morning. That he understood with his brother. He understood so much, and yet, he didn't want his brother to end up like him. He lifted his free hand to eye level, and frowned. So much blood had been spilt by these hands. So much. How was he going to be a father with that much guilt? How could Caroline love him and want him in her life with it?

The sound of the door closing in the front caused him to close his eyes.

"Nik!"

He smiled as he heard her voice, and placed the cup on the desk behind him. Lifting his eyes he watched as she entered the room with a glow that not only came from the pregnancy, but the woman herself.

Caroline stopped a foot from her husband, and read the sadness in his eyes, and her smile dimmed. "What happened?" She asked, searching his eyes.

He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. She always could read him. "He needed to vent." He answered, turning to pick up the glass on the desk, and finished off the whiskey.

She tilted her head to the side. "No, he wanted to go after her, didn't he?" She asked, as Klaus walked to the window, and stared out. "Klaus,"

"He said he didn't want to lose her. He couldn't." He began, letting his eyes become unfocused as he stared at nothing but the memory in his mind.

Caroline slowly approached her husband, and placed her hand on his back. "There's something else, what is it?" She asked, gently.

He sighed, and felt her reassurance in her touch. "He said he didn't want to end up like me. Too much blood on my hands," He finally answered, his eyes focusing, as he turned to face his wife.

Caroline's tender gaze made him relax, and he realized the truth behind his sadness. "I have too much blood on my hands, how can you love me?" He asked, lifting his right hand to her face.

She smiled, and lifted her hand to grasp his wrist. "Because of this," She answered, lowly, indicating his tender touch. "Because you are a loving, giving, protective man, who loves his family, and will protect them no matter what." She continued, holding his eyes. "You took a woman who was abused, and who wouldn't allow any man near her, and made her a strong woman who can't spend a day without your touch." She added, watching him smile. "Bloody hands or no, you will always be the man I love."

He smiled, and stroked her face, tenderly, before leaning forward and capturing her lips with his. He felt her melt against his body, as best as she could with their growing child between them. He had never felt so loved and comforted in his whole life, and it was because of this angel in his arms.

"You were already strong, my love." He whispered, against her lips, feeling her smile against his. "I just broke through your walls, as you broke through mine." He added, kissing her between words.

She laughed, lowly, and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I love you, Niklaus Mikaelson." She remarked, feeling his body relax completely in her embrace.

"As I love you, Caroline Mikaelson." He returned, feeling her shiver in his embrace at her name. He loved hearing those two words from his tongue, and he knew she did too.

She laid her head on his shoulder, and she smiled. They were content at that moment, and it made her love him even more, if that was possible.

"So, tell me do I need to paint the room blue or pink." He remarked, after a few moments of peace had settled over them.

She smiled, and slowly pulled back to hold his eyes. "Why not both?" She asked, watching his eyes narrow in confusion. She smiled even brighter, and pulled out the snapshot from the sonogram out of her back pocket, and held it up to him.

Klaus lowered his eyes, and they widened. "Is that…? Are we…?" He stuttered, slowly taking the picture from his wife's hand.

Caroline nodded. "We're having twins. A boy and a girl." She answered, as his eyes became transfixed on the image, and then slowly made it up to her eyes. She smiled as his expression was one of joy and tenderness.

"Oh, my Caroline," He remarked, finally, scooping her into his arms, and held her close. "We're having twins." He whispered into her hair.

She nodded, and held him close. "We're having twins." She whispered, loving his reaction, thinking it was better than she ever dreamed.

Bonnie shook her head, as her eyes opened, and found his usual chair empty. She smiled as she realized he must have gotten up to get some rest. He needed it.

Turning her head, she froze as she saw a figure in the doorway of the room, and she frowned. The figure stepped further into the room, and her eyes widened. "April?"

April frowned, and shook her head. "I won't pretend you don't know who I really am, Bonnie."

Bonnie frowned, and started to shake her head. "I don't." She whispered, her voice low and catching.

April shook her head. "Doesn't matter, you have something I want, and to get it, well, let's just say, it won't be pleasant for you." She remarked, holding up a syringe.

Bonnie's eyes widened. "No…"

Please be kind!

Sneak Peak into the Next Chapter:

Kol answered his phone, and his blood ran cold. "Mr. Swan, you need to return to the hospital. It's your wife."

Klaus stared at the picture. Reality sinking in. Twins. Caroline was carrying twins. It was too much.

"Dad?"

Klaus lifted his eyes to his son. "Joey, we have great news.

Rebekah froze in the parking lot outside of the grocery story. Her body shook as she recognized the driver. "No..."

Bill frowned as he lowered the phone. "Damn it." He stated, shaking his head, and turning to the photo on his desk. "He won't get away this time, Lizzy. I promise."

Hope you like it! I'll have it up next week. I have a giant paper due this weekend, so that's the only writing I can focus on at the moment!

Until Next Time...
