Chapter 6: Need to be strong.
It was late, too late to be outside. The moon was full; you could see it even though it was raining. A certain child was watching it through the window of an apartment. Raindrops hit the glass of the window repeatedly, but the child ignored them, his eyes longed for someone and meanwhile he had his head resting on the window sill. Minutes later, the little one went to the kitchen to pour some more coffee to continue his vigil.
"Nee-san ... is now over midnight and you're still not here ... come soon, I don't want anything to happen to you," the black-haired boy lay in bed looking out the window, coffee mug in hand, thinking that perhaps his sister would come around anytime now or maybe appear out of nowhere as she often did.
While Sasuke waited for his sister to come home, she was busy doing her work
She cornered her target enemy, he may not be in any hurry to die, but Akua was running late.
'I wonder if Sasuke already ate... I didn't think it would take so long to deal with these people,' she thought as she had just murdered her target with her Jigen-Tou (dimensional sword). Akua had finally finished for the day, but as she went home, she thought of her most recent tasks and concluded that she was definitely out of shape. She analyzed the possible cause and found her answer soon.
"Sasuke ... I've been taking care of you for so long that I have strayed from my work, the only thing I'm good at and with what I give you to eat. Lately I have been given many orders which leave us without time to spend with each other…" Akua saw it was raining, so she put on her hood so the water wouldn't hurt her.
Akua finally entered the house and saw that Sasuke was asleep with his head still looking out the window and uncovered.
"He was definitely waiting… I hope this will not have to happen again," Akua picked up Sasuke gently and left him on the bed. She pulled a blanket over his body and was about to leave the room, but...
"Nee-san ..." Akua turned to see that Sasuke was now awake. "Why did you come back so late, nee-san?"
"I had a lot of work today," Akua smiled at his little brother. "But I promise this is the last time, tomorrow will spend the whole day together, okay?"
"Okay, Nee-san," Sasuke hugged Akua; she just smiled and returned the hug from his brother. After that hug, the two went to sleep, well, just Sasuke, as Akua kept thinking about the recent events of the last days; at work she always thought of Sasuke, so it was increasingly hard to concentrate. They had been living together for a whole month already so it was natural to assume that the two had become a lot closer and had grown accustomed to this new experience of living in company.
Akua sighed. "I didn't finish all the work today. Again."
The next day.
The sunlight coming through the window of the young siblings fully illuminated the room, causing its inhabitants to wakes up.
"Good morning, Nee-san," Sasuke said, getting out of bed, putting on his clothes: the same black shirt with that strange symbol, the white shorts and that was it.
Akua followed her little brother example and did her morning routine as well, but in a much more sedated pace. "Good morning, Sasuke. Listen…"
"What is it?"
"I'm going to buy breakfast, there is nothing left to eat, so it's going to take me a while," Akua finished putting on her shoes and headed for the door. "If you dare to go out I will have to punish you!"
"Understood!" The little boy answered with a smile and Akua left Sasuke in the apartment, alone.
To avoid boredom, Sasuke began reading a book but 10 minutes later got bored of it. While he was mulling over what to do to next to kill his boredom he heard someone knocking on the door. Thinking it was his sister, he ran excited to the front door.
"Nee-san! You came ba-" Sasuke opened the door, but instead of his sister he came face to face with a man in a black suit and wielding a katana with his right hand.
"So this is why The Black Devil has not been done her job well. Guess I'll have to eliminate this nuisance."
Meanwhile, a few blocks away from the sibling's apartment…
"I hope that Sasuke likes fish," Akua had just exited a store with a bag full of fresh fish and was now on her way home.
"GYAAA!"
With her honed senses, Akua heard a scream and she immediately recognized whose voice it was.
She gasped, "Sasuke!" And ran as fast as she could back to her apartment hoping she would be there in time.
"Please, I don't want to die! Why are you doing this, mister?!" For the first time since he could remember Sasuke felt fear. Fear of this strange man that hadn't hesitated in the least before severing one of his arms and watched as his blood stained the floor.
Crying from pain and fear, Sasuke tried crawling away from the man using his remaining arm. With each centimeter he crawled he felt his heart slamming against his chest, urging the body to move faster, to escape from this threat, but the precious distance he gained through blood and pain was easily lost with a couple steps from the man.
A harsh yank later and Sasuke was on his back, the dangerous sword pointing at his face.
"Now you will die ... because you're a burden," The man said, readying his sword to kill the child.
"Leave my brother alone!"
Before the man could react, Akua, with eyes like a crescent moon, pierced the man's heart from behind and then threw him through the window to his dead as he fell from the third floor.
With that done, Akua went to where Sasuke was and touched his cheek to calm him down as he was totally terrified.
"Quiet, Sasuke. Did he hurt you?" Asked Akua deeply worried.
Sasuke was still trembling, but he managed to stutter out a response. "My... my arm..."
It was then that Akua noticed all the blood flowing out from the place of where her little brother's arm once was. Anger flowed into Akua and she closed her fists with enough strength to pierce skin.
"How dare him? This will not stay that way!" Akua's eyes shone with a hate that Sasuke had never seen before and he would later realize that it was his first time seeing his sister's murderous mode.
"Nee-san?" She didn't answer, but she calmed down enough to think rationally and get her priorities straight. She left Sasuke just for a moment to search for bandages and anything else she could use to heal him.
She cleaned, disinfected and bandaged the wound to the best of her abilities she had gained after so many years working in the underworld.
"Sasuke ..."
"Yes?" He said, now calmer.
"Don't open the door for anyone. I will return quickly." Sasuke could not see the eyes of Akua, and maybe it was for the best as they were eyes that people only see once before meeting their demise.
"Akua-nee-san..."
Akua went to the residence of the Miu family, the group that she worked and killed. She entered the residence with a rather fearsome aura, and no one dared stop her as they were sure she wouldn't hesitate to kill any who got in her way. She went to where the boss was and once there she used the computer that was the only way to talk to him, since he never was there personally.
"Why did you send a fucking assassin to my apartment!?"
"Lately, your performance has dropped and our suspicions were true. You are keeping a child."
Akua frowned.
"It's none of your business what I do with my life, besides I've killed anyone you asked me!"
"True, but you've hesitated; it had no sense to have a murderer that doubts."
Akua's eyes glowed.
"If you do something, anything, to that child ... I'll end you!"
"Calm down, remember who gave you your "house" and feeds you. We will not send anyone else; just make sure to keep working like you have always done." The voice said firmly and then stopped.
Akua returned to the apartment, the body of the man she had killed was nowhere to be found not there. She opened the door, there was no blood, Sasuke had cleaned.
"Sasuke?" Akua searched for him everywhere but she couldn't find, then, she heard a noise and she followed it until she got to the rooftop of the building.
There she found Sasuke, sitting there, watching the sky. Akua didn't know what to do or what to say, all she could do was sit next to him. It was dead silent, no one wanted to talk. It had been a very bad experience for Sasuke and Akua could only wish that it had never happened.
"I..." Sasuke said. "I remembered something," that surprised Akua.
"And that is?"
"It was... our... mother". Sasuke's eyes had lost a bit of their luster. "But I remembered her dead, why? Why you didn't you tell me?! Why you didn't you tell me that she had been murdered?!" He shouted with tears in his eyes.
"So that's your story..." Akua lowered her head. "I now understand why your memories are sealed..."
"Why!? Answer me!"
"Because... I knew exactly how you would react, but you have every right to know, I wanted to tell you when you grew up but... now you know. I don't know who did it but they caught you and it took ages until someone found you. I don't know what has happened to you in the past… "
Sasuke remained in silence as he took in his sister's words, his sobbing had mostly stopped.
"Sasuke I found this when I saved you." Akua pulled out a roll and gave it to him. "I do not know why it says seal but I do know that it is for you."
Sasuke took it in his hands and he opened the scroll.
"What's this, Nee-san?"
Akua observed it… It was a manual of tactics of some sort. It spoke of the control of Youki (demon or monster energy), hand possessions, invocation, Genjutsu, Taijutsu and Ninjutsu, among other things. The only odd thing was that the roll had more but it was blank.
"Nee-san," Sasuke stood up, closing the roll and with serious look and determination, he said. "I want to get stronger, you don't have time to take care of me, so I want you to teach me to defend myself and then, one day I also want protect you as you do it with me!" Sasuke turned to look at Akua with a smile.
Akua watched Sasuke for a moment and then smiled, she knew he was human but he was different. Something had changed in Sasuke, he looked motivated.
He had matured.
