Secret
…
Head aching, she shut the car door with unnecessary force and angrily walked into the tower, not even bothering a glance at her concerned teammates. She stumbled up to her room and threw herself onto the bed. Her breath stuck in her throat, and she placed her hand over her mouth and closed her eyes. She wept, the salt of her life soaking the pillow below, hot torrents of grief coursing out her eyes like the breaking of a dam, mingling with the uncomfortable softness of the sheets, her racking sobs shaking her thoroughly with the knowledge that she had just found out—nothing would ever be the same. Gasping for air, she turned her head and sobbed some more.
A small knock was heard before a familiar someone came into the empath's room. "Raven?" the voice asked.
"Robin," her voice was soft, barely audible. She quickly put her hand over her eyes, wiping away the last strand of her tears. "Please, don't come in here…" Ignoring her warning, the Boy Wonder slowly walked further into the room, silently closing the door behind him. "Robin, please…"
Sitting beside her, he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Raven, what's wrong?" The young girl was shaking underneath him, almost as if she was scared. "Why are you crying?" His concerned tone made Raven turn her face towards him, allowing him to finally see her saddened face.
"It's nothing, Robin, just forget it," she spoke quickly, trying to get him out of the room.
He sensed the lie, but did not question her. Instead, he pulled her up and wrapped his arms around her waist. He was slightly relieved once she returned the hug, wrapping her own arms around his neck. "The rest of the team is worried about you, Raven…I'm worried about you." She placed her head on his shoulder and heavily sighed against his neck. "Is it something you wanna talk about?" She shook her head as best as she could in the situation she was in. "Well…I'm really concerned and you being sad is making me, well, sad too."
She rolled her eyes at his play on play words. Pushing away from him, she sat back in her bed, pulling her knees up against her chest and wrapping her arms around them. "It's nothing, Robin."
He cocked his head to the side, but sat next to her on her bed and sighed. "It's got to be something, Rae. It takes a lot for you to shed a tear. I cannot even remember the last time you cried, well—" his voice trailed off, once he did not feel the empath's mood lighten from the slight joke. "Raven, you're making me anxious."
"Well don't be," she said icily.
Robin sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. He was getting nowhere with her at the moment. He sighed again, "Do you want me to get you a cup of tea?" She hesitated, but nodded her head. "Alright, I'll bring one back." Robin kissed her on top of her forehead and got up off of the bed. With one last look, he opened the door and went into the kitchen.
Raven stared at the edge of her bed, deep in thought about the situation she was currently in. She wished she could somehow pinch herself, somehow make herself wake up from this distressing dream, somehow make this all go away. She laid her back on her bed, this time having her attention to the medium sized portrait of her teammates that sat on her dresser. Cyborg had on his Kiss the Cook hat, while Beastboy and Starfire played volleyball in the sand. Her eyes traveled past her own self and to the Boy Wonder that was kissing on her cheek, holding up a glass of some concoction Starfire had probably made.
She rolled her eyes and groaned, looking away from the portrait, remembering everything that happened on that night…the night that got her in the predicament she was in now. She closed her eyes, feeling the sensation that she had felt earlier: the tightness in her throat, the tingling of her eyes… If only she could reverse time to go back to that unforgotten night.
"Raven," Robin said, opening the empath's door again, but this time holding two mugs of steaming tea. Hurriedly closing the door, he placed the two mugs down and walked towards her. "You're crying again."
Raven, surprised, looked up at him and placed a hand over her cheek. Feeling the familiar wetness, she cried even harder, deciding that she did not want to hide anymore. She felt the familiar touch of the Boy Wonders arms wrap around her, but this time she pushed him away. "Stop, just stop."
"Raven, I was just trying to—" he started, slightly surprised by the empath's actions.
"Don't you see what you've already done to me," she whimpered out. "You've made me like this, Robin."
"B…but I don't even know what I did," he stated lamely, trying to understand what was going through her head. "What did I do, Raven? Please, tell me, allow me to understand, please," he begged. She turned away from him, tears still strolling down her own cheeks. He placed a warm hand on hers, making her turn back to look at him. He was deeply concerned. "Please, Raven."
She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing would come out. It was as if her whole body was holding her back from saying anything. She took a deep breath and exhaled loudly, trying to gain enough strength to talk. "Robin," she finally spoke, her voice was still shaky, but she continued, "Robin…I'm…I'm pregnant." She stared into his unmasked eyes, and she could tell that she had scared him. All of the color drained out of his face as he pulled away from her, stumbling off the bed and falling onto the floor with a soft thud.
He shook his head at her, not believing the story she had just told him. "You…" His voice cracked, and she could tell that the news was very disturbing to him. "I…by who?"
The corner of Raven's eyebrow slightly twitched as the two words came out of the Boy Wonder's mouth. She frowned. "Who else, Robin? It was you," her voice came out venomously. "You're the only one that I've…" she could not even say the words. Instead, she shook her head and angrily looked up at him. "Don't act like you don't remember, Robin," she warned.
"I'm not," he said sternly. "I just didn't think you would get…" The words were hard for him to form. He was still wrapping up the fact that his girl—Raven was pregnant. He bit the inside of his jaw and groaned. "Shit! What are you going to do?"
Raven narrowed her eyes at him. "Me? You were a part of the process, too, Robin. Do you think I did this by myself?!"
"I never said that," he said, trying to calm her down.
"Are you two alright?" Cyborg asked from outside the room.
"We're fine," the duo said simultaneously. They waited until they heard the half-human walk away before they continued talking. Raven sighed, suddenly feeling her emotions start to rise. "Look, Robin, I don't know what to do, ok, I'm…scared."
"Well, I am too," he agreed quietly. Neither hero spoke after that for there was nothing else to discuss between the two. Robin stared at the empath. He could feel the emotions she was holding in; scared, disappointment, anger, sadness…regret. He wished he could just take it all back, go back to the day and…He slowly shook his head at the memory and looked up at the girl, first at her covered stomach then at her reddened purplish eyes. This was not the time to feel regret.
Getting up off the floor, he grabbed at her hands and kissed them both then intertwining his fingers with hers. "We will get through this…" he told her, but also telling himself. "I promise we will get through this, Raven...together." He leaned in and sweetly kissed at her neck then on her jawline, to her cheek then lastly kissing her lips.
"Don't tell anyone about this, please, Robin," she begged softly, leaning her head on his shoulder.
"I won't," he reassured her. "It'll be our little secret."
