I'm from America

Sirius Black loved the McKinnon Household. After spending a week there for the summer, he'd gotten to know her family wonderfully. He felt like they were his second family – the Potters were his first – and he would do anything for them.

It helped that they were hilarious. He absolutely adored Mrs McKinnon, who had spent a lot of her time chatting to him and making him her famous hot cocoa when he'd been there. She'd even asked for his help to prank her husband's office.

The two were still laughing for hours after Mr McKinnon walked out of his office covered in purple goo and pink, sparkly feathers. The man was quick to blame his wife, and he took it all in good humour. Sirius thought it was fantastic that the Pureblood house of McKinnon were like this.

Then he looked away when Mr McKinnon pushed Mrs McKinnon against the counter and kissed her, getting some of the goo and feathers on her. It was awkward, until his saviour turned up in the form of Marlene McKinnon.

He loved the McKinnon house and the family. He loved her brothers and her parents. He loved her Grandfather who told him old stories and her Grandmother who baked magnificently. But most of all, he would admit hanging out with Marlene was the highlight.

And being invited back there for a weekend during Christmas break was uplifting. Not only was it Marlene and Sirius, they had their friends there too. Mary McDonald, Lily Evans, James Potter, Remus Lupin, Dorcas Meadowes, Emmeline Vance, Benji Fenwick and Peter Pettingrew were all invited.

However, due to it being the Christmas holidays, most of them had to stay behind with their families for the whole festive holiday, which left it being Marlene, Sirius, James, Lily, Remus, Mary and Dorcas. Apparently everyone had been at the McKinnon house before except for Dorcas, and Sirius was secretly eager to see how she took it all. They were very different.

On the train back to Kings Cross station with everyone everyone - except for Lily and Dorcas who were off on another trip for the food trolley - Sirius found out that the little trick Mrs Missy McKinnon had played on him had been done before. Except, with different accents.

James had grown up knowing the McKinnons, so he'd never experienced it himself. Remus says Missy had a French accent when he'd met her. Mary shared that she'd gotten a Scottish accent and had thought it was real for the whole day before they'd given it up. Peter told them that Mrs McKinnon had been Mexican when he'd met her and James said that Mrs Mckinnon had been Italian when Lily had met her.

Mrs Missy McKinnon was really something else.

So the lot of them had bets on what accent she'd do when Dorcas, the only one who hadn't met her yet, turned up at the McKinnon house for the weekend.

Sirius got there early, two hours before James was even out of bed and into the shower. Of course he was welcomed in with warm arms. He and Marlene had stood in the warm, friendly kitchen of the house as they chatted to Mickey her younger brother and Missy, one of Sirius arms around Marlene as they leaned back against a counter.

It wasn't long until everyone began showing, and Dorcas was the last one to show up. After introducing her to the McKinnons, Marlene led her to the kitchen for the big moment. The others gathered around closely behind them, obviously Lily had been included on the bet, because her attention was focused on Mrs Mckinnon.

"Mum," Marlene began, clearing her throat to get her mother's attention from where she was feeding Mickey some of the spaghetti sauce she was preparing for the meal that night, she was feeding her own five kids plus the six her daughter was having over. It was a challenge, but like her daughter, Missy never backed down. "This is Dorcas, we call her Doe. Or Cassie."

Missy broke into a grin, and almost everyone held their breaths was they awaited the reveal. "So you're Cassie? It's delightful to meet you, dear. Marlene had told me so much about you."

The kitchen was sill and no one breathed. The others skilfully hid their smiles at the accent and at the look of confusion and surprise spreading on Dorcas' face.

"You're American?" She asked in surprise before quickly back tracking. "Oh, um, I mean – It's lovely to meet you, Mrs McKinnon."

"Yes, I'm from America. Now, none of that 'Mrs' nonsense," She said with a wink and such a thick, posh American accent that she pulled off perfectly, "I'm Missy."

"Your mum is amazing," Sirius murmured against Marlene's ear, leaning close so no one else heard. His hand even moved forward to tangle his fingers with hers for a second. Marlene shot him a smile and squeezed his hand before letting do.

Dorcas left that weekend still believing Mrs Missy McKinnon was American and Remus left about twenty gallons richer.

End.

Authors note:

I got really carried away with this one. Oops. It's longer than most, but I had fun. Enjoy.
