Alice and the Copycat Duelist

or

A duel between friends

"Professor Banner said you should take it easy." Alice scolded me with a lifted finger. "He and Greg will figure out a way to solve the problem with Gagagigo."

"It's not a problem, it's just…" I tried to explain, but Alice cut me off.

"Just what?" Her eyebrow was lifted. "We can't have you pass out every now and then."

"But…"

"No butts here." She said and giggled a little. Her giggling made me smile (I like it when she giggles).

"Hey sis." Greg entered my room. "How's Mime, eh?" I turned my head towards my best friend.

"Greg! What did you find out?" I asked.

"Y'know Mime, the professor and I came to the conclusion that…" He paused for a moment. "…you have to duel with your card to find out what it wants."

"What?" I did not understand. "I have to duel with Gagagigo?"

"Yes, to see if he'll talk to you or ignores you." Greg scratched his neck. "I'm not sure why, but Professor Banner said so."

"Well, then let's get going." I tried to get up from the bed, but Alice's hand pushed me down again.

"You better not end up in the hospital, understood?" She looked scary with her piercing, serious eyes.

We left my room and in the hallway we found two Ra Yellow students talking. One of them was Dimitri and the other was Bastion, a super-talented duelist. I saw how Alice raised her hand to say hi.

"Hi Dimitri, hi Bastion." Alice smiled to the two students (how does she know so many people from our dorm?).

"Hello." Bastion said.

"Hi Alice." Dimitri looked at Greg and I. "Hi."

"Bastion!" I remembered. "You were the one who defeated that strong duelist from Obelisk Blue! Chazz Princeton, right?"

"Well, yes." Bastion nodded.

"I was thinking, maybe we could duel?" I gladly stepped forward. "I'm Mime by the way."

"Interesting offer, but I must decline." Bastion shook my hand. "I have to prepare for a duel. But maybe some other time, yes?"

"Of course. Who's your opponent?" I was a bit disappointed, but my curiosity pushed the disappointment away.

"Jaden Yuki." Bastion straightened his jacket.

"No way, Jaden from Slifer Red?" My eyes widened. "I want to duel him too."

"Well, I hope to battle him as soon as I have calculated a superior strategy." Bastion seemed really determined. "Ever since I won against Chazz, I have been building a deck to outmatch Jaden's…" He paused. "Very well, I bid farewell. Have a good day." And with quick and calculated steps he walked towards the other end of the hallway. I turned around to Dimitri, but he had disappeared out of the door behind me as I was speaking with Bastion (so it seems like Greg and I are gonna duel).

Greg, Alice and I passed the card shop in Duel Academy on our way to the first class of the day.

"Is that Dimitri dueling?" Alice stopped and looked into the card shop. There was a bunch of students surrounding two duelists.

"That's Syrus, Jaden's friend!" I said when I saw Dimitri's opponent. "What are they dueling for?"

"They are dueling for the last ticket to the exhibition. What do we have here?" A girl in an Obelisk Blue uniform and a skull earring in her ear popped out from the group of students. "Hi Alice, your little boyfriend in there seems to be in trouble. And he's up against a Slifer Red."

Alice face turned red in matter of seconds.

"He's not my boyfriend!" She said and looked angrily at Megan, rival and former friend. There was a year between Megan and Alice; they had been in the same duelist prep school before Duel Academy. With their love and talent for dueling, the two of them used to duel a lot, but to Megan's disappointment Alice always seemed to be a little better at dueling. Every time Megan won a duel Alice won two.

But due to the age difference Megan graduated a year before Alice. She went to Duel Academy and somehow she did not want to be friend with Alice when she, Greg and I, enrolled (that's what Alice told me).

The two rivals starred each other down now.

"You two spent a lot of time together." Megan's skull earring dangled as she heatedly spoke. "He even helped you with your deck."

"He's a friend and he's good at spicing decks up. That's why I let him take a look at my deck." Alice was furious. The two girls started walking away from the card shop, still arguing with one another.

"Well, let's go outside again." I said to Greg. "I don't wanna be near those two at the moment."

"They at least talk now, eh." Greg changed the subject. "I guess you double duel 'date' went so well, that she now are talking to Megan again. Heck, they might even become friends again." He laughed as my cheeks turned red.

"Greg, it was not a date." I said embarrassed. "Besides she has Dimitri." I could not hide the disappointment in my voice.

"Y'think, eh?" Greg said. "Well, I'll be frank with you. They are just friends. So I dare say: You can ask her out on a date."

"Really? I mean…shut up." I gave him a slap on the shoulder.

"But you have to duel me first." He said with a gleam in his eye. "We have to find out what's going on with your Gagagigo card. Remember?" He laughed again as I looked at him with a confused expression on my face (I thought he meant I had to win a duel against him in order to ask his sister out!).

"All right!" I started. "I'll play A Legendary Ocean and Mother Grizzly in attack mode." We were outside. The weather was fine and we had our own little space near the woods, perfect spot for outside dueling. The huge grizzly bear appeared in front of me with 1600 attack points, thanks to my field spell card.

"So it's me, eh." Greg drew a card, looked at it and continued. "Remember we need to get the reptile in play. And I'll have to try destroying it, while you protect it. That way it might be willing to talk to you."

"Got it." I nodded. "Now continue."

"Okay." Greg sat a monster. "By the way do you have a ticket for the exhibition?" He placed a face-down and ended his turn.

"Uhmm?" I drew a card. "What was that exhibition again?" I scratched my neck. "I'll attack your monster with my grizzly."

"Attack, eh?" Greg flipped his card up. "It's Legendary Jujitsu Master with 1800 defense points. You lose 200 life points and your bear goes back to your hand." As my life points dropped my Mother Grizzly returned to my hand.

"Aw, come on Greg." I lowered my head. "I'll summon Mother Grizzly again in attack and play a face-down. End turn."

"Y'know that exhibition…it'll have Yugi Muto's deck in a display case." Greg smiled. "So I hope you've got a ticket. Watch this." He switched his Legendary Jujitsu Master to attack and played Shield & Sword which switched the attack and defense of all monsters on the field for a turn.

"Oh no, it means that my grizzly's points also switches!" I looked at my Mother Grizzly and saw its attack change to a total of 1200 points (my A Legendary Ocean still gives a 200 point boost). "Plus I don't have a ticket." I made a sad face. "I would love to see Yugi Muto's deck though; I mean he's like one of the biggest role-models for duelists."

"Yeah, maybe you should go find a ticket after this duel. Attack, now!" Greg's monster attacked my bear with a crushing blow. "And there goes another 600 of your life points. Sorry, Mime." Greg sent me a friendly smile.

"No hard feelings." I said with smirk. "When you destroyed my Mother Grizzly you activated its effect. Now I can special summon a water monster from my deck with 1500 attack or lower." I searched my deck. "And I'll summon Cure Mermaid."

"Since you summoned her, I'll activate Trap Hole!" Greg flipped his card face-up to reveal it. "Now your monster goes to the grave, eh."

"And I bring it right back with my trap card: Call of the Haunted." I resurrected my mermaid back onto my field.

"Since it is my turn now, my mermaid will heal 800 of my life points." I said as I drew a card. "And now I'll attack your jujitsu master." Thanks to my field spell the mermaid had 1700 attack points. The Legendary Jujitsu Master only had 1300 (the Shield & Sword spell card only worked for one turn). "And she will destroy your martial artist. You lose 400 life points and I'll set two cards." I ended my turn.

"Nice move, eh." Greg drew a card and I saw a spark ignite in his eyes. He was about to make a good move. "I'll summon Monk Fighter but he won't stick around." Greg used his monster as a tribute. "Here comes the Master Monk."

"And now I use my trap card." I revealed my trap. "Torrential Tribute, destroys every monster on the field when a monster a summoned." The trap card destroyed the Master Monk and my own mermaid and sent them to the graveyard.

"Well played, Mime." Greg sat ended his turn.

I drew a card but before I looked at it a barely audible whisper caught my attention.

"Greg did you hear that?" I said.

"What? No I heard nothing." Greg scratched his neck. "What is it?"

"I think he's talking to me!" When I looked at the card I felt the whisper again. "I summon Gagagigo!" I placed the card down in face-up attack position and right in front of me the reptile appeared. This was the first time in years I had used Gagagigo and the sight of him was kind of frightening. I listened to the whisper

"Long…time…" The reptile turned around towards me. "…too long."

"I…uhm, Greg can you hear it?" I hoped he could. But Greg was shaking his head. "What do you want from me?" I said to Gagagigo. "We're friends right? Like me and Greg are."

"…used to be…evil. I thank you for…saving me…from evil. Now I ask…for a favor…" The whisper faded out and was followed by a few moments of silence. "…maybe you…can help the others… For now duel…friend." Then Gagagigo was gone. The card was on the ground. It might have dropped from the duel disk. I fell to my knees and Greg quickly came over to grab my arm.

"Hey Mime are you okay?" He looked worried.

"I'm fine." I said short of breath. "Let's continue the duel."

"Are you sure?" Greg seemed doubtful about continuing.

"Yeah, Gaga…he told me to continue." I said in a low voice.

"Okay. Wait you call him Gaga?" Greg helped me back on my feet.

"Uhmm, that's sort of his nickname." I explained.

"Well, let's get going with the duel, shall we?" Greg walked back to where he was standing beforehand. "Still your move."

"Allright!" I heard the whisper again, but I already knew what to do. "Gagagigo is back in play and ready to attack!" I placed the card back in the duel disk and the reptile attacked as soon as it appeared. The boost from A Legendary Ocean gave it a total of 2050 attack points.

"Now it's me, eh." Greg drew and played a card. "A special summon! I play Gigantes in attack by removing one earth monster in my graveyard." An enormous troll-looking creature rose in front of Greg. It had 1900 attack points, but it was not enough to kill Gagagigo.

"And now I play a field spell: Canyon." Greg placed down a card in the field spell slot on the duel disk. "Now yours are gone."

I saw how my A Legendary Ocean crumbled and the virtual water around us got drained.

"Now my Gigantes can take down your Gagagigo." Greg sent his monster towards mine.

"Shoo, no good." But I was smiling. "I'll use my trap Compulsory Evacuation Device to return your monster to your hand."

"Interesting match, eh?" Greg sat a card and ended his turn.

"Allright!" I did not waste any time. "Gagagigo attack directly!" But Greg flipped his set card face-up.

"Trap activate! Draining Shield!" His eyes were ignited with a spark of joy. "Now your attack is negate and I gain life points equal to your monsters attack." His points went up by 1850.

"I play a defense monster and end my turn" I said.

"Doesn't matter." Greg quickly drew a card. "I play Monster Reborn to resurrect my Monk Fighter from the graveyard and tributes him to special summon a new Master Monk." His eyes were victorious. "And I'll remove a monster in my graveyard to special summon Gigantes again." His Master Monk took out both my monsters (Gagagigo in attack and Fire Kraken in defense) since its effect made it able to attack twice and Gigantes attacked me directly.

"Wauw, when did you get that Draining Shield card?" I asked. "It seems pretty good."

"Hm, got it a while back, but never got a chance to use it." Greg answered happily. "It's neat, eh?"

"Nice. But now it's my turn." I drew a card and smiled when I saw it. That was the card I needed. "I'll remove two water monsters and one fire monster in my graveyard to summon Frost and Flame Dragon!" I placed down the monstrous dragon and it felt like the ground was shaking beneath us as it appeared. "I discard one card from my hand to use my dragon's effect and destroy your Master Monk." A small sphere of water surrounded by flames surrounded the monk and destroyed him in a flash of blue and orange. "And now my Frost and Flame Dragon attacks your Gigantes." The troll-looking creature was destroyed and with it Greg's field spell too. I sat a card and ended my turn.

"You knew my Gigantes would destroy spell and traps when he got destroyed?" Greg looked surprised.

"I once had a Gigantes myself." I said with a smirk.

"Ah, I see." Greg drew a card. "I play Pot of Greed, which let's draw another two cards." He looked at his cards for a second and then sat a monster in defense.

"Sorry Greg." I said as I drew a card. "I summon Star Boy to raise my Frost and Flame Dragon with 500 attack points and then activate my dragon's effect to destroy your defense monster. Then they can both attack directly" And they did. The duel was over. I won.

"Nice duel, guys." Alice walked over.

"Hey Alice." I said and smiled to her. "How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to see my dear brother get beaten." She said and put her tongue out.

"Very funny, sis." Greg shook his head.

"I was thinking…" She turned to me. "…do you have a ticket for the exhibition tomorrow?"

"Actually…I don't." I said and looked down.

"Good, here's one. Then we can go." She looked embarrassed for a second. "I mean the three of us. See you tomorrow." And she walked away with haste.

"Yeah sure." I said. But by then she was long gone.

Greg laughed and put a hand on my shoulder.

"And they lived happily ever after." He said and laughed again.

"Shut up!" I smacked his shoulder and we went inside our dorm.
