Chapter seven: Fear
Chase's P.O.V
I stare wide eyes at the masked man who kidnapped me two months ago. I place a protective hand on my tummy afraid of what he'll do to us. I clutch at Adam's shirt as tears roll down my face.
"W-What do you want?" I ask scared.
"You," he smirks and takes a step forward.
I take one step back after getting up from Adam's side. My heart pounds out of control as my back presses against the tree bark. I'm cornered.
The man smiles and attempts to grab me. But unlike last time I run. I run into a small forest that's in the mansion's property. I don't know where I'm going but I don't stop either. The further away I go the harder it is. My body can't take being so far away from Adam for so long. Even though he came back, with the baby, it's hard to leave his side.
I look back breathlessly and notice that I lost the creepy bad guy. I stop and hide behind a tree trying to keep my tears at bay. I start coughing and wheezing. My tummy is hurting really bad.
"Chasey," someone calls.
I look from behind the tree with blurry filled eyes to see the man wandering around looking for me.
"Adam, where are you?" I sniffle.
I curl up in the fetal position and cry quietly from fear and pain. I'm absolutely terrified and everything hurts. I can feel myself losing consciousness little by little. The footsteps draw near to where I am and I close my eyes. I feel weak and I know I can't run anymore, much less fight.
I open my tightly shut eyes. I scream at the sight of the scarred face of the man that chased me. He smiles wickedly and grabs me by my shirt.
"Please no," I beg.
He only smirks, "disgusting freak."
And throws me on the ground. I fall with a grunt and try to pull myself up but the sudden flare of pain in my tummy stops me. I scream again in agony as he makes to kick my stomach.
"Hope you lose that disgusting thing..such a monstrosity shouldn't live."
I can see a blurry Adam pulling the man from the collar of his shirt away from me. He punches him square on the jaw and kicks him. The man reciprocates until their both out of breath fighting each other. Adam gives him a final glock and the man stumbles backwards, hitting his head on a rock in the process. I give a whimper as the pain in my stomach increases and intensifies. That grabs Adam's attention and he rushes to my side.
"Ssh it's okay Chasey," he soothes.
"Hurts," I sniffle.
He places a shaky hand on my stomach and his eyes grow wide in panic.
"A-Adam?"
"Fuck..you're bleeding," he whispers under his breath.
I start crying uncontrollably after hearing those words. I can't lose my baby. I can't.
Adam carefully picks me up trying not to jostle me too much.
"Please...I can't lose my baby...Adam please," I plead.
"Calm down," Adam whispers in my ear.
He hurries back to the house and Bree's eyes widen.
"Adam! Chase!" Bree yells.
Her eyes stare in horror at the sight. I hold onto Adam's shirt tighter.
"Call Owen," Adam orders.
She nods and hastily digs for her phone.
"Adam," I call breathless.
"It's okay baby. Hold on, please Chasey," he straps me in the car.
I place my hand on my tummy as tears trail down.
"It's going to be okay," he soothes.
"Hurts so much," I groan.
"I know baby," he sighs regrettably.
I close my eyes and try to take deep breathes and stay calm as I feel blood drip down my thighs.
Adam's P.O.V
I watch Chase as he sleeps on the too big white bed, lifeless. As soon as I had brought him to the hospital they took him away from me. Drops of blood on the white tiled floors. I watched as they wheeled him into a room and I couldn't follow anymore. Bree arrived moments after and I broke down in her arms.
"They found him but he got away," she whispers.
"This is my fault," I sob.
"No Adam, you didn't know. It's a miracle you woke up to save Chase. Let Owen take a look at you," she insists.
"I'm fine but Chase-"
"You're no use in this state," Trent says.
He comes over and gives me a quick hug.
"Let my brother check you over. There's a cut on your head and you're beat up. What if you have a concussion?" The young boy questions.
Reluctantly, I agree and let them both lead me to an empty room. Owen walks in with a sad smile.
"How is he?" I ask anxiously.
"Right now, let's check you over," he ignores my question.
He tells me to lie back on the bed and I obey without a fight. He starts probing and poking me. Occasionally I hiss in pain when he presses on my ribs.
"Well it seems like you sprained your wrist and have bruises everywhere. You also have a cut lip and a gash on your head which caused a small concussion," he cleans my cuts and bandages them.
"What else?" I raise an expectant eyebrow.
"I forbid you from leaving Chase's side for at least a month," he says taking off his gloves.
"W-What about...the b-baby?" I stammer.
"They're fine...but not safe. There's still a high chance he can miscarry...I'm sorry Adam," Owen answers.
My throat tightens as the words sink in. Oh God. He can lose our baby. Our...baby...
"Can I..?"
"Yes, go," he dismisses.
I get off the bed and run to where Chase is sleeping. I stop in my tracks when I see his small body on the big bed with different machines connected to him. His hand is on his stomach and his chest rises and falls as he sleeps. I pull a chair next to his bed and run my hand through his long chestnut hair.
"'dam?" He moans.
"Hey baby boy," I smile slightly.
His eyes flutter open and he groans as the bright light hits his hazel eyes.
"Our baby?" He asks tiredly.
"Baby's fine," I assure.
"Really?" He coughs.
I get up and bring a glass of water. I help him sit and watch as he drinks the cool liquid.
"You're on bed rest and I get to stay home and take care of both of you," I smile genuinely.
"No...Adam no, you have to work and-"
"And you're more important than money," I interrupt.
He smiles weakly and sighs.
"He got away...I couldn't keep you safe and I'm so sorry," I wrap my arms around his frame.
He goes stiff as I mention the bastard that hurt him and our baby.
"A-Adam," he whimpers.
"I'll protect you," I promise.
"He...he was the bad guy that kidnapped me...when I was brought to the scary place...and then I met you," he cries softly.
Oh god...they're back. They want to take him away from me.
"I won't let them take you away. I won't let them hurt you," I soothe.
"I'm scared," he admits.
"I know Chasey," I kiss his chapped lips.
Our foreheads touch and we stare into each other's eyes.
"You need to rest. I won't leave your side. Ever," I vow.
He carefully moves over and pats the empty space. I smiles and take off my shoes before lying on the bed next to him. I spoon him from behind and my hands are on his protruding stomach. He snuggles closer and falls back asleep.
"How I wish I could keep our baby safe," I sigh.
He moves in my arms until he's facing me. His stomach pressed against mine as we cuddle.
"Adam," a light knock on the door.
I look up and see Trent with Bree.
"Hey," I smiles.
"Are they okay?" They ask curiously.
"For now. I think Owen is keeping him for at least a week to monitor them," I reply.
"Thank goodness," Bree sighs in relief.
"I need you to call Officer Ethan," I say.
"Why?" Both question.
"The man that attacked us...he's the one who kidnapped him and sold him," I respond.
"What?" Trent stares mortified.
"Adam bought him from an auction that sells hermaphrodites as slaves," Bree explains quietly.
"Do they all...end up in good homes like you?"
"Sadly...no," I answer.
"I'm lucky to have my brother," Trent says with his gaze downcast.
"You really are," I smile.
"Wait...he was kidnapped, what about his parents?"
"They were killed by those bad men," Chase mumbles in his sleep.
He's half conscious.
"Oh.." He breathes.
"Please don't mention it. He's fragile right now," Owen enters the room.
"Sorry bro," Trent apologizes.
"Don't worry about it," he smiles.
"Adam," he turns to me, " we'll do an ultrasound in an hour."
"Okay," I nod.
"You guys. Let's go," Owen leads them out.
He turns off the light on his way out. I smile gratefully and look at Chase's small face. He's pouting and his brows are furrowed in concentration. He looks so adorable but he's not safe yet. Both of them are still in danger. And I'm scared to lose them. The fear is suffocating.
