~Ice Upon Ice~

Chapter 7

Jack Frost x Elsa

It had been a week.

Elsa had been trying to convince herself that she did not care. She had always been lonely, she just did not think the absence of Jack Frost would intensify that so much. Her powers felt as if they were spinning out of control, and Anna's constant pestering was not helping.

Their parents had left for their voyage three days ago, and since then Anna had been very determined to get Elsa out of her room.

"C'mon!" she said, knocking on Elsa's door in what was possibly the most obnoxious way anyone had ever knocked on another person's door in all of history "I'm so bored, Elsa!"

For all of her flaws, Elsa had to hand it to Anna when it came to determination. She had been avoiding her since they were tiny children, and still all she wanted to do was spend time with her sister. It was heartbreaking.

"Why did you leave the party before?" Anna called through the door. It was probably the twentieth time this week she had asked, "What are you so afraid of? It's not like mom and dad were gonna arrange your marriage or anything!"

Anna sighed heavily, and just as she was about to go talk to the paintings that hung on the wall (which were occasionally more responsive than her sister, unfortunately), the door swung open.

"Why would you say that?" Elsa demanded. She looked so perplexed and almost angry, but Anna hardly noticed. The door had opened. It was the rarest occurrence in the world.

Elsa turned around suddenly.

"Wait, no! Don't close the door again, please!"

She actually laughed. Anna hadn't heard her sister laugh in years.

"I'm only getting something," Elsa explained, picking up her gloves from the nightstand. She was so possessive with those gloves.

"God it's cold in your room! Can we go somewhere else? Not that there's anything wrong with me standing in your doorway. I mean, I can stay here if you want. I just-"

"Let's go somewhere else." Elsa said, cutting her off. Lord, that girl could ramble. It was a nervous habit, and Anna was nervous far too often.

It was surprising that Elsa actually was willing to spend this tiny fraction of time with Anna. It was dangerous, and she knew that. It was just that she could not spend another second sitting alone I her room, waiting for Jack to suddenly appear. That was looking like it was never going to happen, and she wanted company. That was odd. She never wanted company.

Anna made herself a cup of tea and sat down at the dining room table. She was very anti-servants. She never asked anyone to do anything for her. Elsa sat three chairs away from her, and to Anna that did not even feel like distance.

"So," Anna said, "Are you going to tell me why you left the party now? It was for you, you should have stayed!"

Elsa sighed. "You're the only one who noticed I was gone."

"That's not true!"

"Then how come no one came looking for me?"

"Because they know you don't want them to!"

Elsa looked away. She hated that Anna was right. She had, in fact, shut everyone out, but it was for their own good. No one understood her.

Well, someone did, but as it appeared, that someone either never existed to begin with or was never coming back.

"Why did you say that thing about marriage, Anna?" she asked. In the back of her mind, the question worried her. The thought of marrying anyone worried her. After all, she was developing feelings for an invisible, possibly imaginary snow-person.

"I don't know. Why did it bug you so much? I was just kidding. Our parents know that you're not going to get married. I mean, yeah, they invited suitors, but it didn't mean anything. They know you."

Elsa was taken aback. Did her parents really think she was so cold? Besides the ice thing. She could love someone. She loved them, and Anna. It was their idea for her not to show it.

"Maybe I will. Someday." She sounded defensive.

"Is that was this is about?" Anna asked. She sounded excited, like she was about to scream with joy. "Did you meet someone? Is that why you're so worried about an arranged marriage that's not happening?!"

Elsa blushed scarlet. She felt herself do it, and tried so hard to cover it up. "Absolutely not. I've had no contact with anyone. You know that."

"I don't, actually!" Anna said, like it was the biggest realization of her entire life, "You're always in your room. . .but maybe you're not! And I saw, that one night. . .oh my gosh, Elsa, you have to tell me about him!"

Elsa stood up. "There's no him! And it doesn't matter. Like you said, I'm not getting married!"

"Wait, don't leave! Elsa!" She was already halfway out of the dining room.

"We can't just do this, Anna!" Elsa told her, "we can't just sit around and drink tea and at all perfect and sisterly. And we can't just discuss potential suitors that may or may not exist!"

"Why not!? Why can't we be sisterly? I'm your sister!" She could hear the despair in her sister's voice. She was not going to stick around for the tears. She had already hurt Anna enough.

"It's complicated! Just. . .just tell me when mother and father return. Please."

Anna pouted, but it was drowned out by the sound of Elsa's door slamming. She was so miserable about things life this. It was like nothing Anna did was enough, jut because they were different. Elsa was more princess-like. More professional. Far more sensitive.

Behind the closed door, Elsa sat on her windowsill, muttering to herself.

"You can't do that. You can't just sit and talk with her. You have to protect her. You're not safe for people. You can't be around them."

She rested her head against the window and felt it ice over under her touch.

"Jack," she murmured, "Jack, I miss you."
