Chapter 7
Kat rolled over in the early morning hours and opened her eyes to see an empty bed across from her where Hilary should have been.
"I wonder where she went." Kat mused out loud.
"She spent the night with Tyson." A voice replied from behind her.
Kat squealed and sat upright, looking over her shoulder to see Kai smirking, looking very amused by her reaction. He was leaning up against the headboard, his hair a mess, but still looking every bit as handsome as she remembered from their first time meeting each other.
"Kai?!"
"Kat…"
"Wh-What are you doing here?" Kat asked, quickly looking down at herself to find that she was still in her clothes from yesterday.
"Well, I slept here last night." Kai shrugged getting up and going around the bed, holding a hand out towards her, not loosing his smirk. "Coffee?"
"Ummmmmm, sure?" Kat answered timidly. She placed her hand in his and he pulled her up so quickly that she had to put her other hand on his chest to steady herself. He leaned down, brushing his lips against her ear.
"No more crying yourself to sleep ok?" He requested simply, but it made Kat freeze in place right then and there, leaning against him so that she wouldn't fall.
"W-What?"
"Ray was worried so he handed you over to me last night." Kai explained. "Don't scare us like that again, ok?"
Kat nodded. "O-Ok." Her emotions were running wild and she was hoping that Kai would just punch her in the gut or something so that she could start breathing normally again. And guess what….
"Ouch…." Kat moaned as she doubled over in pain, with Kai's fist still firmly secured in her gut.
Kai's eyes got really wide and he was in shock. What the hell did he just do.
"I guess is asked for that." Kat groaned as she started crumbling. Kai quickly grabbed her in his arms and placed her on the bed.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I did not mean that at all." Kai fretted. Why the hell did he just do that!?
"I-It was-sn't you." Kat coughed. "I think I pushed a thought again."
"Really?" Kai asked.
Kat nodded. "I- um….I kinda wanted you to punch me cause I was started to hyperventilate."
Kai tipped his head to the side ever so slightly, before he pushed aside his slight panic, and figured it out. He smirked and placed his hands on either side of Kat's hips, leaning over her as she leaned back away from him, putting her hands behind her to steady herself. "Mmmm really now?" He purred like a cat. He thought about something and decided to act on it. He pressed his forehead up against hers and thought about something. "Try controlling your ability, tell me what I'm thinking."
Kat hesitated. "Are you sure?"
Kai smiled. "I'm sure." He reassured, closing his eyes.
Kat took a deep breath and let it go, deciding to take a chance and placed her hands on his cheeks to strengthen her connection. She tried to picture what she wanted to find out, what she was trying to do. She thought of Kai and she thought of her skin-to-skin connection, trying to picture what he was thinking about.
It was very hard to try and call up her power as she had been avoiding using them by not touching anyone, but it was kinda hard not to touch Kai when he was so close and made it so difficult. Kat's face scrunched up in concentration and Kai felt her hands stiffen in frustration on his face.
"Relax Kit-Kat." Kai said soothingly and Kat's eyes popped open in shock. "Your power is within you, just trust it."
Kat smiled. "Ok Kai." She closed her eyes and relaxed once again.
This time, with Kai's calm direction, she felt her power come to her much easier this time around.
"I….." Kat paused as she saw the thought float in the air in the blackness behind her eyes. "I talk in my sleep?" Kat opened her eyes, pulled back her hands and leaned back to look at Kai in the eyes. "I really talk in my sleep?"
Kai chuckled. "Yup, well it's more like mumbling and random complete sentences, but yes." He nodded as he took a step back and stood up. "Come on, coffee time now."
Hilary was busy in the kitchen, making everyone a good breakfast when Kai and Kat finally walked out of the room. She shot a quick glance and saw that Kat was feeling a little more at ease with Kai ever since their almost kiss. She was curious as to what they were just doing because Tyson had mentioned to her that he felt Kat use her ability.
"Eggs?" She asked the phoenix pair.
Kat nodded and made her way quickly over to Hilary's side to get away from the awkwardness of her and Kai's moment. "Thanks Hilary."
Kai smirked as Kat looked over her shoulder, trying to be subtle, but quickly blushed and looked away as she saw him looking at her. He took a seat next to Ray on the couch as Max was practicing healing an old scar on Ray's forearm while Tyson was practicing on a book, trying to make it invisible and then reappear.
"She seems better this morning." Ray whispered out of the side of his mouth.
Kai nodded as Max fully healed Ray's scar.
"All right!" Max cheered. "I did it!"
"Awesome Maxie!" Tyson smiled, but then it turned into a frown as he still held an invisible book. "Wish my ability was going better."
"I hear that Tyson." Kat sighed as she sat down next to him as Hilary sat on her other side. "I- um…I accidentally had Kai punch me in the gut this morning."
"WHAT?!" The boys, plus Hilary chorused.
Kat smiled, ashamed. "Yea….didn't feel so good."
"I'll say!" Tyson laughed. "It hurts like hell when Kai punches." Then a lightbulb turned on in his head. "Hey, try this. Make me make this book visible again. Here." He took one of her hands in his as he held the book in the other.
"What?" Kat asked, very confused.
"Hey, it might work." Max shrugged. "Theoretically, you could make him tap into his ability using yours."
"Yea, try it, it could help you both try to figure out your power." Ray nodded.
Kat glanced at Kai and saw him staring at her and Tyson's hands, jealousy in his amethyst eyes. She winced at the hostility but was distracted when Tyson squeezed her hand.
"Please?" The world champ asked.
Kat sighed and nodded. "Ok, lets try." Due to Kai's help before, she found it easier to access her ability this time around. She concentrated on her physical connection to Tyson, then thought of his ability and what it was capable of. She thought of the book in his hand and making it appear.
'Tyson, make the book appear in your hand.' Kat thought in her mind. But she was so into her own world that she didn't feel Tyson react to the sentence, as he heard her voice in his own head. But then he felt his own ability manifest itself and he had the presence of mind to remember the feeling for future references.
In the next second, the book appeared in Tyson's hand and Max cheered.
"Very nice you two." Ray nodded.
"Ummmmmm, Kat?" Tyson asked weakly.
Kat opened her eyes and let go of his hand. "Yea?"
"Ummm, is it suppose to be normal for me to hear your voice in my mind when you didn't say anything?" Tyson asked weakly.
There was a silence as everyone took that in.
Kenny thought about it. "Did you say something to yourself when you were using your ability Kat?"
"Ummm, yea. To help myself concentrate is said, 'Tyson, make the book appear in your head.'"
"Thats exactly what I heard!" Tyson exclaimed. "And it wasn't the same as when you told me to calm down with Tala. With Tala, it was more of a ringing, this was just words."
"So not only can you push thoughts into others, but you can talk to people in their minds too." Ray mussed.
"And I can kind of hear thoughts too." Kat admitted. "But it does take a bit of concentration to do that."
"Woah." Max whistled. "You might just be the most powerful of us all, if you can do all of that."
Kat squirmed in her seat as the guys started talking about it all.
Kai looked over, thankful that she was no longer holding Tyson's hand anymore, but a bit worried for her and how her powers would continue to develop.
'Mariah?'
Golden eyes widened in disbelief.
"Oh my god, I really heard you in my head. That's surreal." Mariah said in disbelief.
"You're telling me." Kat sighed as she held her head, taking her hand away from Mariah's shoulder.
"Are you ok Kat?" Hilary asked as she supported her friend when Kat went weak at the knees.
"I'm ok. It's just harder to talk to others in their head. It takes a lot out of me." Kat said softly.
"Here, sit down."
Hilary and Mariah helped Kat to the couch so that she could take a moment.
"It seems easier with the guys, then with anyone else." Kat explained.
"Must be because you guys are connected." Hilary theorized.
Mariah nodded. "Makes sense. You guys all have the sacred bit-beasts, and you all have these abilities. You said so yourself that you feel when the others are blading and using their other abilities. It would make sense that it comes easier to you to use your abilities on each other, then on a random person."
"But what we've also noticed is that it's easier to do things to Kenny then to Hilary." Kat informed Mariah. "We think that's because Kenny has Dizzi, while Hilary doesn't have a bit-beast. Same thing with you Mariah. While it took a lot for me to contact you, it was easier to contact you then Hilary, because you have Galux."
Mariah agreed. "Well since your abilities come from Dominique it would make sense that it would be easier for you to contact others with bit-beasts, then those without."
"Are you ok now Kat?" Hilary asked as she saw Kat re-stabilizing her breathing. She took the phoenix mistress's wrist and felt for her pulse, feeling it return to normal.
"Yup. I'm ok now. I just need to practice more." Kat nodded. "My ability feels like a rubber band. The more I stretch my ability the easier it is to use."
Hilary nodded as the door to the suite opened, revealing Ray and Kai. "Oh, hey boys."
Ray smiled as Kai just grunted. "Hey ladies." Ray replied. "Having fun Kat? Getting any easier?"
Kat shrugged as Kai made his way to stand behind her. "Somewhat, what about you two?" She asked, looking up at Kai.
Ray snorted. "Kai's still having trouble and it's bothering him because he's always good at stuff."
Kat heard Kai growl and Ray shut up, but wasn't doing a very good job at keeping his giggles silent. "Well, what about you Ray?" She asked the tiger master.
Ray smirked and suddenly he was behind Mariah, causing her to squeak and jump in the air. "I'm doing pretty well. I have my own teleportation down, but teleporting other things is going to take some time."
Kat heard Kai grumbling again from behind her and she saw Ray smirk in amusement.
"Come here." Kai suddenly said and he grabbed her hand, dragging her to his and Ray's room.
"Wait, what?!" Kat squealed as she quickly left the room, to which Hilary, Mariah and Ray laughed at and didn't help her as Kai closed the door behind them. "What was that for?" She asked the phoenix master.
"I need your help." Kai confessed rather quietly. Kat heard him, but she couldn't believe it. THE Kai Hiwatari was asking for help? What was the world coming to? "Ever since you helped Tyson with his ability, he has been getting better and better every day and I'm only getting worse."
"So you want me to help you like I helped Tyson?" Kat wanted to confirm.
Kai nodded and walked up to Kat as she walked back away from him, until she hit the wall and was trapped there by his body with his hands on either side of her head. "Only you have to promise me that you will never hold his hands ever again. I'm very protective about the things I see as mine."
Kat blushed fire engine red as she saw clear as day what he was implying. She knew that he had a bit of a rivalry with the dragon master and that he was very particular about people touching his things, but she never knew that he would get so jealous over her holding hands with Tyson, nor implying that she was his.
Kai smirked as he saw her turn bright red and look down at her feet. Due to the fact that they were already really close to each other, when she bent her head down to look at her feet, her forehead was near his mouth and he didn't let the opportunity slip as he placed a chaste kiss on her forehead near the hairline.
Kat froze in place as she felt his lips on her skin. It was the first time that he actually kissed her. All the other times, they had gotten interrupted and even though it wasn't a real kiss it was still a step in that direction and she had no idea what to do.
Kai pulled back and brought his finger under her chin so that he could look into her eyes. "You're mine. You got that?"
Kat was conflicted. On the one hand she wasn't sure if she liked being owned by someone, but on the other hand, Kai had shown her nothing but kindness and had even protected her from a gang. He might be stoic and cold on the outside, but in moments like this, she saw the hidden warmth and vulnerability and she liked it. She didn't mind if she was his. She kind of liked that she knew she was protected and safe in his arms.
Unbeknownst to her, since her emotions were haywire and Kai was holding her chin, all of her thoughts were being transferred to Kai and he loved everything that he was hearing, although it took him a moment to figure out that they were her thoughts.
"Got it." Kat finally answered as Kai could feel her body relax against his and she let her head fall onto his shoulder.
Kai smiled and held her head there with a hand on the back of her head. "Good. You're safe here Kit-Kat. In my arms, you're always safe."
Kat smiled softly into his shoulder and brought her hands up behind Kai and held onto his shoulders tightly. She didn't say anything as she just silently cried, letting her fear and worry wash away while Kai wrapped his arms around her securely.
After a minute, Kat pulled back and Kai let her, knowing that she wasn't running this time. Kai wiped away her remaining drying tears as Kat leaned her head back against the wall behind her.
"So, do you want me to help you or not?" Kat asked, looking him in the eye. "Or do you want to just keep telling me that I'm no longer a free women."
Kai chuckled. "Damn right you're not. And yes. I do need your help."
"Ok, lets see what I can do. What do you want to influence?" Kat asked, now perfectly content to being trapped between the wall and Kai. She even started to play with his scarf as Kai looked around the room.
His amethyst gaze locked on something and he smiled, turning back to see Kat still playing with his white scarf. "How about Dranzer? He's over there on my nightstand."
Kat looked up and stood on her tiptoes to see over Kai's shoulder to where Dranzer lay next to Kai's bed. "Alright. Hands?"
Kai complied and brought his hands up between them. He took one of her hands in his as she placed her right hand on top, closing her eyes. Kai followed her lead and closed his eyes as well, waiting to feel his power manipulated so that he could copy the feeling.
'Kai, bring Dranzer over to us.'
Kai heard her in his head as clear as he heard her thoughts earlier. Then he felt his ability manifesting and growing inside of him. He felt himself tap into it and picture Dranzer making his way over to them.
"Kai." He heard Kat speak out loud and slowly opened his eyes to see Dranzer hovering in the air above their hands. Kat let go of his hands so that he could catch Dranzer.
"Wow. I felt it. My ability manifesting, how I accessed it, everything." Kai chuckled as he placed Dranzer in his case on his belt.
Kat smiled. "Good, I'm glad. Would you like to try it on your own?"
Kai nodded as he stepped back from Kat, looking around the room.
Strangely, Kat felt empty as Kai stepped away, so she stepped off the wall and to his side, actually bumping into his arm in her haste. Kai smiled, surprisingly delighted in her haste to be at his side now. "I got it." Kai's eyes had zoomed in on a bottle of soap sitting in the attached bathroom on the tub.
Kat followed his gaze and nodded. "Try it."
Kai closed his eyes and held out his hand, palm facing the bottle. He tried to remember the feeling he got when Kat made him do it and he held on to that feeling, letting it fill him up and guide him. He envisioned the bottle floating over to him and when he opened his eyes he saw the bottle doing just that.
Kat's ocean blues lit up as she saw the bottle make it's way over to Kai's palm. It faltered halfway across the room and started dropping to the floor, but Kai stepped forward and concentrated harder and the bottle continued it's path across the room and into his hand.
"Wow, that'll take a while to control." Kai snorted, as he set the bottle down.
Kat giggled and reached a hand up to his cheek, closing her eyes.
'We will get better with practice'
Kai chuckled and turned so that he kissed her palm. "That we will."
Kat blushed as he 'kissed' her for the second time. She dropped her hand and started fiddling with her fingers, walking away. "We should go back, I think I feel Tyson using his ability and we should show everyone how you've progressed."
Kai smirked as he saw her shrink away from his gaze now that they were about to join everyone. He walked up behind her and leaned down whispering in her ear. "Just remember, you are mine and you are safe, ok?" He reached down and squeezed her hand, then walked away.
As Kai walked out of the room, Kat smiled as she brought her hand up in front of her, revealing a kit-kat bar that Kai had pressed into her hand.
Awwwww! :D
You know I try so hard to keep Kai in character as much as possible, but...sigh...oh well.
