Going Home.
Amelia arrived home later that evening with a pizza take out for her and Sam's dinner. She had picked up Sam from school, and he was now sitting happily in the passenger seat with the pizza box on his lap. "Nice pizza, mum," he told her, and Amelia smiled back. "Wait till dinner time to eat that now, won't you Sam?" she asked him. "I don't want you to spoil your appetite now, do we?" she asked. Sam nodded with a sigh as he drooled over the pizza. "I know mum, but I can't help it. We did long division in math today and I had to concentrate really hard," he told her. Amelia grinned. "So your teacher Mrs Barnaby is still happy with your grades?" she asked as she drove. Sam was a gifted math child. He was getting A grades in all his math homework, and Amelia was very pleased with him.
Sam nodded. "Yeah. She says I'm a natural," he replied. Amelia smiled and patted him on the shoulder proudly. "That's my boy," she said happily before driving up to their drive way. But as soon as she pulled in, Amelia knew something was wrong. She parked the car in their driveway, and told Sam to stay in the car while she sorted the matter out.
Next to her driveway, Amelia saw a police car parked outside her house, lights flashing, and two police officers standing firmly by the car. "Ms Vannick?" the male police officer asked. Amelia approached them and as she did so, she recognized the female officer as the same officer who came previously, and lost her partner because of the Babadook. "Yes, that's me," she said nervously. "How can I help you, officers?" she asked them. The female officer rolled her eyes. "You know why we're here. We're here because that thing or whatever it is in your basement, had somehow killed my partner," she said. Amelia gulped. "I'm very sorry to hear that, officer," she said.
"Yeah, right. We have a warrant to search the premises, then we'll be taking your 'pet' before placing you under the arrest," the male officer said sternly, glaring at Amelia. The female officer showed her the warrant before she and her new partner barged their way past her and entered her house. "Wait, no, you can't. It's not safe," she tried to tell them. She followed them in panic through the house, and down to the basement. "You don't know how to catch it!" Amelia protested. The male officer just grinned. "I'm sure we'll find a way, Ms Vinnick," he replied, taking out his gun. "That's not gonna work," Amelia said.
"Please, stand aside, Ma'am," the female officer said rather sarcastically as she carried on going and followed her new partner into the basement. All Amelia could do was shout, "Please!" one more time. But it was in vein as the police didn't listen. The male officer kicked her basement door down and walked down the stairs slowly, with his gun and torch shining in front of him. The female officer followed suit, and all Amelia could do was stand at the top of the stairs and watch in horror. She had no idea what the Babadook could do when it was threatened. Sure, it killed a police officer, but Amelia knew it had more terrifying capabilities than that.
Sure enough, as soon as the officers were in the basement, Amelia could hear a low growl. She bit her lip as she heard the officers move around the basement, searching for the Babadook. "You can't get rid of the Babadook," a voice behind her said simply. She jumped and turned round, only to see Sam standing behind her with a worried frown on his face.
"Sam, don't do that," Amelia said irritably. "You made me jump," she said. "Sorry, mum," Sam replied. "What are you doing here, anyway? I thought I told you to wait in the car," Amelia told him. Before Sam could reply, the room started to shake, and Amelia was terrified it was an earthquake. As she and Sam held on to the banister, she realized the noise was coming from the Babadook. It roared, and in reply, she heard the two gun shots being fired. Then the female officer screamed. A minute later, the male officer ran out of the basement. "Ms Vinnick," he said in a panicked voice. "What happened?" Amelia shouted. "My partner disappeared, she was taken by whoever made that noise," the officer said. Amelia was appalled to see that instead of apologizing to her for not listening to her advice, he instead took out a pair of handcuffs. "Ms Vinnick, I'm arresting you on suspicion in making a plan to kill a female officer. You may not say anything...," he started to say. But Amelia and Sam shared a desperate look. Amelia knew what she had to do.
Without saying a word, she kicked the officer in the groin. He then doubled over with a groan and lay on the floor, gasping. "I'm sorry," Amelia said. "But I'll fix it," she added, before grabbing Sam and running out of the house.
They got in the car again and slammed the doors shut before speeding out of the driveway, narrowly missing a pedestrian as they left. "Where are we going, Mummy?" Sam asked worriedly as he held the pizza on his lap again. "We're going away," Amelia answered him simply. "We're going to take the Babadook back to where it came from."
