When Rose woke up that Monday, Jannie was sitting in the back of her bed.
Rose opened her mouth to automatically send out but she was faster:
- Before you say anything, I know you have every right to be upset with me, I should have told you. - Rose began to get up. That conversation was giving her a bad mood. Jannie also got up standing right in front of her.
- Rose, seriously, I'm sorry! I should have told you and I apologize! But I really like him ...
- And I did too! I liked him too, but apparently that does not matter!
- No! It was why we were waiting for things to be cleaned up ... to be official! Do not want to hurt you!
- But you lied to me! There is no excuse for that.
Rose finished dressing and grabbed the bag of books. Jannie was standing in the middle of the room their eyes shone with tears.
- Rose ... Please forguive me… I'm really sorru. It will never happen again. But you are my best friend ... and I need you!
Her voice trembled and she looked very desperate. But Rose also was hurt. She shook her head and left the room.
Quickly going down the stairs of the dorm. In the common room Oliver looked at her as if wondering how the conversation had gone. In response Rose passed him without saying anything and hurried to the great hall with her red hair curls in a braid swinging in her back.
Albus was in the hall. His black eye had decreased its size thanks to miracle products in the infirmary. Beside him was the open book of transfiguration.
Rose sat in front of him and sighed throwing the bag in place by her side. The hall was fairly populated. She grabbed a piece of toast and began to eat it violently:
-Unbelievable! - She complained. - Do you know who I came to apologize today?
- Jannie - Al said without taking his eyes off the book. - She also tried last night to me ...
- And what did you tell her? - She asked filling her glass with pumpkin juice.
- Nothing. I didn't even speak. - Then he stopped paying attention to the book and began to eat his scrambled eggs. - She came to me with bullshit "Sorry Al! I didn't want to hurt you! I did not know you felt something more for me ... you are my best friend! Sorry ... bla bla bla "!
- Well, I suffered something similar ...
- Speaking of Jannie. Here she comes ...
Jannie entered the hall next to Oliver. Her eyes were red from crying. She sat with her boyfriend away from them.
- At least they had the decency to sit away from us. - Commented Rose. Grabbing an apple.
- Yah ... I think nowshe misses her little buddys. Well she should have thought of that before lying to us.
Rose nodded, stopping to look at Jannie who ate quietly toast. He looked around the room and saw Scorpius Malfoy in the Slytherin table.
She would eventually thank him for the help he gave to her ... But her pride was preventing it.
Albus and Rose received their letters from home and then moved up to transfiguration class.
At the end of class Albus stayed behind to talk with Professor McGonnagall about his performance in this class. Rose thought he did pretty well.
She found Malfoy sitting on a bench in the hallway reading a book.
It was the perfect opportunity to thank him.
Rose however felt strangely nervous. She was about to swallow her pride ... and she loved her pride ...
But she had to do. Moved up to Malfoy and cleared her throat. The boy did not stir once Rose so she had to repeat the process with more volume. Then Malfoy looked up at her and said:
- Yes, Weasley?
- Hmmm ... - Rose raised his voice so that it stayed clean. Her legs are trembling and she knew very well what to say. But she closed his eyes and said trying to look proud- I just came to thank you for the help you gave me the other day. In Hogsmede. It was ... hmmm ... nice of you. For a Malfoy I mean.
Malfoy let out a laugh of derision and said:
- You did well to thank me. I owed you nothing. And although you won't believe it, I can be a good person, "for a Malfoy, I mean." - He ended by quoting her.
Rose had her mouth open but quikly closed her and tried to look herself.
- Okay. Humm ... se you ...
- Tomorrow? - He finished for her. Rose looked at him trying to figure out what he meant. So Malfoy spoke as if it was the most obvious thing in the world - Tomorrow we have detention again, remember?
- Oh! Yes! Hum .. goodbye.
And rolled away from him. A strange conversation with Scorpius Malfoy ... Very strange.
- Hi I noticed you were talking to Malfoy, you get along now?
It was Jannie, again. Rose walked faster trying to get her to stay behind. But she keept up to Rose. The red-head made a face of contempt and said without even looking at her:
- Why would I tell you?
- Yeah ... Looked like he ...
Before she could say whatever. Rose stopped finally looking at her and said abruptly:
- Listen, Jannie. You lied to us. You betrayed us. And we do not have to put up with you. Your trust has been totally lost for more efforts that you make and even if it was just a mistake it will not work. Therefore, move on get over it. We will not go back to being friends, never.
Jannie stood looking at her. Her eyes glistened with tears. She nodded lowering her head and ran the another way.
That hit Rose on the heart. Maybe she had been too hard on her. No! She had lied to her. And Albus! She deserved it. Rose said to herself to trying to make herself feel better.
She shook her hair and turned her walk into Herbology. Jannie was not there, in fact Jannie did not show up the rest of the class.
When Rose arrived at the library Scorpius had not yet arrived and she was alone.
She looked at the stack of books that had now cataloging. She sat on a chair and looked at the first book: The most poisonous thorny plants and fungi moldy.
A book seemed extremely boring and useless. She leafed through it and found a picture of an ugly plant with thorns and enormous thick.
- Thats disgust ... - She murmured.
- Come on Weasley, I just took a shower, It can't be that bad! - Said Scorpius Malfoy sitting in front of her with his hair barely dry and smelled good. No he was not bad at all, until he was well enough. And smiling! Very strange.
- Hmmm ... oh. I was just talking about the plant on that book ...
- I know you were not talking about me Weasley, I'm not stupid. I was making a joke. But suppose you do not you have any sense of humor ... - He said.
- Oh Yeah I was focused ... sorr ... - Pause!
She was about to apologize to Scorpius Malfoy. In a minimally civilized conversation. She was very red and Malfoy looked away with an arched eyebrow and turned to books.
The was a very awkward silence. And Rose felt very uncomfortable and strangely nervous.
- So ... - Malfoy began - you and that girl, Jannie or whatever it is ... now back to being friends?
That question gave her a stab in heart and that feeling of being uncomfortable was replaced by anger:
- You have nothing to do with it. - She said defensively.
- Well, no. But I could not help to see her all alone through the hallways all depressed ... and it seems to me that ...
- I said you didn't have anything to do with it! And why do you want to know anyway? You need entertainment because your life sucks?
Malfoy's face changed completely. He returned to his usual expression of anger and disgust.
- No. I just think that is ridiculous, Weasley. And making people suffer for your shitty little pride and your usual thought that you are always right.
Rose laughed sarcastically.
- MY pride? Look who's talking. You think you're so good that you don't put aside your foolish Malfoy pride and make real friends! And Jannie was not my real friend! She traded us! She lied! Friends before boys!
- I'm not just a Malfoy! When will you get it into your stubborn head! Your friend made a mistake. She lied! Yes, it is wrong! But if friend comes before boys, you shuld put he first insteed of her stupid boyfrind who althougt doesn't like you stole your best friend. If she said she was sorry, let your pride go, dammit!
- Shut up! TENS NOT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! Do not know anything about friendship or friends! And why are you defending her?! She is not a saint!
- No it is not. People make mistakes. She deserves a second chance. And I'm a decent person, weasley. Although you do not believe it. I do not care if you believe or not! But it's who I am!
Rose looked at him angrily. She picked up the books and took them to the table far away as possible, back to him.
Was it possible? The things he said about Jannie? Of course not, he's a Malfoy, he just wanted to disturb it ...
But he was a good person? Of course not! It was irritating and a Malfoy! And always treated her badly ... However this did not make him a bad person, she was also mean to him and she was a good person ... Maybe he just didn't like her.
And Jannie ... Yes, she had made a mistake, people make mistakes ... maybe I should forgive. I mean she had missed her. Yes, she deserved a second chance ... friends before boys, so she would have to overcome every situation of Oliver.
Rose quickly finished the rest of the rest of the books cataloged. He looked backward to tell that Malfoy had finished and was going to talk to Jannie, but his desk was empty.
At the beginning she was angry but then thought it was going to be friends with Jannie, and could talk to her again and be together! Rose delivered the books on the desk of Miss Prince with a smile and ran through the corridors finding Jannie and Oliver sitting on a couch in the common room.
Deep breath and turned to them. Both Jannie and Oliver looked at her in shock:
- Hmm ... Can I talk to you alone? - Rose asked looking at Jannie.
She closed her mouth and nodded throwing one last glance at her boyfriend folowing Rose in to their dormitory. Before Rose could say whatever she want Jannie started talking:
- Sorry that I followed you before, I know you want me to leave you alone, and if that's what you want is what I'll do and ...
- No! - Rose stopped and Jannie looked at Rose with confusion- Jannie, you did something very serious. You lied to me and it hurt me a lot and my trust for you is by a thread at the moment.
Jannie made a sad face and looked down embarrassed prepared to whisper an apology when Rose continued:
- However, you are also my best friend. - Jannie looked at her with shining eyes - and I think you admitted your mistake ... The truth is that sometimes, people deserve second chances. And we're friends for years, and I told you everything, that's why it was so hard to see you betray my trust.
- Sorry ...
- Yes, I know. Friends before boys. And if so I'm not going to let a guy ruin our friendship. Whoever he is. So ... I think I'm ready for this and give you the opportunity to prove that this lie was just an accident and not a habit.
- So ... we're fine?
- More or less. We'll be fine ... soon - she replied.
Jannie's face lit up and she smiled grabbing Rose by the neck in a big hug. Rose also smiled and hugged her back feeling much better ...
When Albus found that Rose had forgiven Jannie, he shook his head and said, that though all she had done made sense, he was not ready to forgive Jannie.
At breakfast, Jannie sat with Rose and Albus with its partners Quidditch.
Rose was much happier this way. With his friends back. Jannie told him the whole story with Oliver making Rose laugh. Rose had moved on from Oliver, and let her friend told her the story. It was the least she could do after all that she had hide for months.
When Scorpius Malfoy entered the hall and sat alone in the Slytherin table exchanged glances with Rose and saw her talking happly with Jannie. And, for the very first time he smiled at her. A smile that was not fun nor mean, a smile with pride and affection.
Rose instantly blushed but smiled back.
