'May I take your order?'
Biting his nail Deidara looked over at Itachi across the table. A strange nervous habit he had suddenly picked up on, because why the hell not. Normally someone wouldn't make him behave like this. On edge and frustrated with this entire thing, but Itachi had been staring at him the entire evening already like some lovesick puppy and the guy had no right to. They hardly knew each other and Deidara had not been that friendly towards the guy either.
Perhaps agreeing to go on this date and then actually going as well did not give the right signal, but Deidara didn't want to chicken out. Show Itachi that he was a coward, because he was not. Deidara could handle this and then firmly deny Itachi a second date. There wouldn't one. He needed to make sure that Itachi understood that, because ever since he agreed to this date, he could practically feel His gaze piercing through his mind, trying to find signs of what was going on and if Deidara was going to slip up. Maybe it was still a test.
'We'll have the chef's menu and give us the wine menu to go with it, please,' Itachi murmured, his eyes still strained on Deidara.
The waiter nodded at that and simply left, never writing anything down on a notepad. Showed clearly how fancy this place was. First already the privacy of their table, stalled against the wall at least two meters away from the next table. Then the soft classical music playing in the background to accompany the style this place was decorated in. The way Itachi was dressed in a perfect black suit didn't help either and Deidara was clearly underdressed, but that was something he cared little about. It was not his choice to go here. The fact that Itachi chose a menu with seven courses was not something he appreciated either. Food didn't mean much to him anyway, so this was all a waste.
A hand slithered over the table, reaching for Deidara's, but he would have none of that. No romantic gestures, no holding hands. So he folded his own arms together, hiding his hands away against his body and out of reach of Itachi's eager hands.
It reminded Deidara of the ride here. Itachi had actually come with a chauffeur, meaning Itachi came from certain wealth. And Itachi had taken seat in the back with Deidara, placing his hand right in the middle seat as if to expect Deidara would reach out and hold it the rest of the ride. But Deidara had learned from the previous encounter, remembered how it had made him feel to touch Itachi before. He could still not explain what had happened and Deidara didn't really want to go through that again. It had not been a pleasant experience. And this one wasn't turning into one either.
The hand slid back over the table and ended right in front of Itachi, placing his fingers against each other. 'Ever been here before?' he then asked, trying to get a conversation going.
'No,' Deidara immediately replied, because why would he have been here before? This was not a place he was comfortable being in. All too neat and reserved. Deidara wasn't extremely loud, but didn't appreciate being held back by silly etiquette. He knew how it would all go, but his interest did not lie here, nor did he have a reason to behave well. For him there were no business meetings or impressing the father in law. The food might be nice, but why would he care?
The waiter came rushing back and placed all the utensils they would need on the table, together with new wine glasses, before filling them with a nice clear white wine that would fit perfectly with the first course they would be having. Deidara just chugged it down, wishing for once that he would actually get drunk and get through this evening with a pleasant feeling. Chances were slim.
Right as they were left alone again Itachi turned back to Deidara, clearly displeased with the rude interruption of their conversation, as if they really had been having one. 'My parents used to take me here when I was younger to introduce me to this type of life. Now I rarely come here, unless I have a business meeting of some kind,' he explained as if Deidara would actually care about this type of thing.
Yet Deidara replied to it, asked a question as if he was interested. 'What kind of business meetings?' Deidara swirled the wine in his glass and took another long gulp, it already half drained of its contents. The wine tasted nice for as long as it lasted and somehow it did make Deidara curious for the first course.
'Nothing too interesting,' Itachi said, wearing an easy smile on his lips as if Deidara was the most endearing creature in the world and it pissed Deidara off. What had he done that deserved such a look? Nothing. No person had ever looked at him like that. Admiration perhaps, because of his beautiful appearance, but not endearing. Such a look was not meant for him and frankly he found it insulting.
'Oh,' Deidara replied, chugging the wine glass now, just to avoid having this conversation and avoid looking into Itachi's dark gaze that reminded Deidara so much of the past. Of all those lives Itachi had lived already and had lost right after. Such short lives humans had. Before he knew it, Itachi would be losing this one as well and left this all behind him. Deidara did not want to be part of it.
The first few courses then passed by and Deidara was amazed by how small they could make their portions and how much wine they served with it. But what amazed him most was how unaffected Itachi was by all the wine they had been drinking, seeming to be as sober as Deidara still was. They did not share many words as the evening progressed, here and there commenting on how everything tasted and at times Itachi would mention things about his life. Deidara tried to ignore most of it, not wanting to know too much. Not wanting to get involved at all. This life was short. It would fly by and then Deidara was all alone. It's not like Deidara could stick around anyway. The fact he didn't age was noticeable obviously. He would only last a few more years here and then he had to leave.
By the time the sixth course had been taken away Itachi's phone suddenly rang. It caught Deidara as odd that the guy actually stood up from the table and excused himself. With the way Itachi had been looking at Deidara you wouldn't think that there was anything more important than spending time with him, but apparently this was. He didn't mind it, but it was just strange. The way he hurried away and disappeared into the hallway towards the bathroom. It must be really important then.
Fifteen minutes had passed by already and Itachi still hadn't returned and now it did bother Deidara. The last course had even been brought over and was standing on their table, untouched. Something sweet and chocolaty and it was melting away, waiting until finally someone took the first bite. For a moment Deidara considered just going for it and start eating, but it would be rude and he didn't want to be that asshole that couldn't wait on his date to return. But this was bullshit. Who would be on the phone for that long while on a date with someone? Deidara wanted to get out of here already! This date could've been over by now.
After another five minutes passed by Deidara got up out of his seat and stomped towards the bathrooms. There in the hallway was Itachi, leaning against the wall while humming in reply to what was being said on the other side of the line. As soon as Deidara stepped forward, arms crossed in front of his chest and eyebrows raised to show off his annoyance, Itachi glanced up at him, dark eyes boring into his bright blue ones and it only annoyed Deidara further. Itachi was not reacting to his presence at all. He was merely looking back, still listening to the other.
'I'm working on it,' Itachi suddenly said, speaking into his cell phone. 'It's not as easy as you expected it to be, but I am making progress.' He fell silent again and the other one on the line now grumbled rather loudly about something, but Deidara could not make out the words. Someone was not pleased though. 'I'm not in a rush and you are not either as far as I know. I'll take my time, so I am sure this will have the right outcome. Now I need to get back to my date before he punches me in the gut.' And then Itachi hang up without waiting for a reply. Deidara had no idea who Itachi had been talking to, but that was not a friendly way to part.
Raising his chin Deidara studied Itachi and actually thought about punching him in the gut, just because. 'The dessert has pretty much melted down and doesn't look very appealing anymore, so we might as well leave and consider this date finished.' Because Deidara wanted it to be finished and just leave already.
'Alright, I'll go pay and then I'll drive you home,' Itachi murmured, letting a slight smile grace his lips as he moved forward. And then without warning an arm slipped around Deidara's waist, pulling him a little closer to Itachi's body. The heat instantly settled deeply under Deidara's skin and instantly he pushed Itachi away. Again he could feel his mind getting cloudy and the want to actually give in was so very present that it was scary.
Not wanting to lay any more pressure on this moment Deidara just turned around and walked away, hating the heat that had risen to his cheeks. Why did this damn guy have such an influence on him? It was not fair. There shouldn't be some strange test like this. Why would someone go through such lengths to see if Deidara would give in? It didn't make sense, but this was not normal. A human should not have such effect on him. There had been no warning of this.
Grabbing his coat from the coatrack somewhere in the back Deidara hurried towards the exit, wanting to feel the fresh air on his skin and seep into his lungs. The door flung open and hit the side pillar harshly, but Deidara didn't care. He just wanted to be outside and calm his racing heart down. And that was exactly what the cold air did.
The street lantern lit up the street around him together with the light coming from the restaurant, not bringing Deidara the comfort he needed. Longingly he sent his gaze up at the sky, watching the stars share their bits of light. He would take flight tonight, letting his wings unfurl and rush through the evening sky without even looking back on this evening. Maybe he should walk home instead and not wait for Itachi to bring him home. Deidara could just fly home then and let this rush of feeling wash away in the evening air.
'Ready to go?' Itachi spoke up, startling Deidara slightly. He was only a few inches away, hovering over Deidara's shoulder to look at him and it was slightly discomforting. Couldn't he keep his distance, especially after what just happened?
Taking a step to the side Deidara turned his body to face Itachi and create a bigger gap between them as well. 'I think I'll get myself home if you don't mind. I'd like to get a smoke and I don't live too far away from here.'
The dark eyes shimmered a little as he caught Deidara's gaze and stared for a while. There was no real emotion present and Deidara had no clue what exactly Itachi was thinking about all this. 'Okay,' he replied softly and Deidara smiled softly, happy he didn't make a big fuss about needing to take Deidara home. He was a big boy and could take care of himself. Far better than Itachi actually could. 'Then we'll say goodbye here.' And without warning Itachi then stepped forward, grabbed Deidara's hands and pulled him forward.
In his surprise Deidara didn't react at all and then there was a light brush of lips against his, sending an instant shiver down Deidara's spine.
The kiss lasted a few seconds, only a slight movement coming from Itachi's side. Deidara hung practically limp in Itachi's arms, his mind completely empty and his body felt as jelly. No, he did not want this. Did not want to be kissed by this man. Did not want to react. This was dangerous. Far too dangerous. The heavy gaze of Him was back on him and he would hear of this soon. This was a mistake.
Pushing himself firmly out of Itachi's hold Deidara instantly tumbled to the floor. Breathing heavily he tried to get his heart to calm down, to get his body to react properly, to just feel like himself again. Scrambling up Deidara ran, ran until he had reached his apartment building, ran until he had taken all the steps up to finally reach the safety of his home.
Itachi simply watched him go.
